Efficient Iterative And Multigrid Solvers With Applications, Cao Lu Dec 2016

Efficient Iterative And Multigrid Solvers With Applications, Cao Lu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Iterative methods are some of the most important techniques in solving large scale linear systems. Compared to direct methods, iterative solvers have the advantage of lower storage cost and better scalability as the problem size increases. Among the methods, multigrid solvers and multigrid preconditioners are often the optimal choices for solving systems that arise from partial differential equations (PDEs). In this dissertation, we introduce several efficient algorithms for various scientific applications. Our first algorithm is a specialized geometric multigrid solver for ill-conditioned systems from Helmholtz equations. Such equations appear in climate models with pure Neumann boundary condition and small wave …

An Exploratory Study On Process Representations, Chetan Naik Dec 2016

An Exploratory Study On Process Representations, Chetan Naik

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Knowledge about processes is essential for AI systems to understand and reason about the real world events. And, the systems need some form of semantic representation to perform reasoning. At the simplest level, even knowing which class of entities play key roles can be helpful in recognizing and reasoning about events. For instance, given a description ``a puddle drying in the sun", one can recognize this as an instance of the evaporation process using simple role knowledge which asserts (among other things) that the undergoer is a kind of liquid (the puddle), and the enabler is a heat source (the …

Selection On Stability In Food Webs, Jonathan Joseph Borrelli Dec 2016

Selection On Stability In Food Webs, Jonathan Joseph Borrelli

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Whereas much of ecological research has been focused on enumerating the differences among ecological communities, it is equally important to understand their similarities. Food webs exhibit remarkably conserved patterns regardless of the type of environment in which they are found. Evolutionary and ecological processes are able to generate a variety of community configurations, but some of these will have a higher chance of being stable. Selection on these configurations based on their stability properties should lead towards an increased representation of stable structures. Moreover this selective process will operate the same across different environmental contexts. The goal of this dissertation …

Plant Community Composition, Species Coexistence, And Community Assembly In The Riparian Zones Of Small Streams In New York State, Emily Joyce Rollinson Dec 2016

Plant Community Composition, Species Coexistence, And Community Assembly In The Riparian Zones Of Small Streams In New York State, Emily Joyce Rollinson

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Many mechanisms may contribute to the diversity and composition of an ecological community. In riparian habitats, which are often described as both very diverse and very susceptible to biological invasions, flood disturbances may be a predominant structuring mechanism. In this dissertation I use several approaches to describe the mechanisms governing the diversity and composition of riparian plant communities along small streams. I performed a systematic literature review of the role of disturbances in facilitating plant invasions in general and in riparian plant communities in particular. General trends in the effects of disturbance on plant communities may be difficult to detect …

Anticipation Effects Of Capital Gains And Dividend Tax Changes Under A Realization-Based Or An Accrual-Based Tax System, Selin Gonen Dec 2016

Anticipation Effects Of Capital Gains And Dividend Tax Changes Under A Realization-Based Or An Accrual-Based Tax System, Selin Gonen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001 (EGTRRA) and the Jobs and Growth Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2003 (JGTRRA), introduced a reduction in capital gains and dividend tax rates, generating interest in understanding the macroeconomic effects of capital gains and dividend taxation. My dissertation focuses on the impact of the capital gains and dividend tax changes in a realization-based capital gains tax system, motivated by the fact that capital gains taxes are paid upon realization in the United States. I find that modelling the capital gains tax system as realization-based is crucial for the following reasons: …

Essays On Internal Migration In Developing Countries, Tamara Gurevich Dec 2016

Essays On Internal Migration In Developing Countries, Tamara Gurevich

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis investigates the determinants and implications of migration decisions made by individuals in households, using Indonesia as a case study. The thesis consists of two chapters. In each chapter I study respectively the effects of local recent flood events on individuals' and households' decision to leave their origin community, and the effects such migration decisions may have on subsequent health of migrant household members. In chapter 2 of this dissertation, I quantify the effect of migration on subsequent health of migrants using a potential outcomes framework design that exploits exogenous impacts of floods on migration to reduce concerns regarding …

Essays On The Impact Of Health Information Technology On Patient Outcomes, Ryan Michael Mckenna

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation consists of three chapters surrounding the impacts of health information technology systems (HIT) on hospital inpatient outcomes. In an effort to eliminate inefficiencies in the US health care sector, policymakers have made a concerted effort to encourage hospitals and physicians to adopt health information technology systems. In Chapter 2, I construct a unique dataset on health information technology adoption and health outcomes in New York State to conduct a hospital level analysis identifying the impact of adopting HIT on inpatient outcomes (rates of adverse drug events and severity-adjusted mortality). Unlike previous studies, the patient population is not restricted …

Education Dynamics In A Developing Country: Evidence From Indonesia, Elif Deniz Sumengen Dec 2016

Education Dynamics In A Developing Country: Evidence From Indonesia, Elif Deniz Sumengen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

There is an urgent need for upper secondary-level and above educated people in Indonesia. According to a recent report, Indonesian companies cannot fill 50% of their entry level positions. To increase the educational attainment, government has been implementing various polices, such as school construction program, compulsory education and allocating 20% of its budget to education, but inadequate enrollment at upper secondary and tertiary levels and the quality of education still remain as big problems. To shed a light on these urgent and recent problems, I ask four questions: a) What is the effect of school quality on tertiary attainment? b) …

Detecting Fraud In Public Procurement, Yajun Wang Dec 2016

Detecting Fraud In Public Procurement, Yajun Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Fraud in public procurement is a big problem in public sector all over the world, and is very difficult to detect in empirical studies. Common fraud schemes include corruption, collusive bidding, failure to provide the required quality, and false statements, etc. In this paper, I employed game theory, machine learning, and statistical methods to detect fraud risk in Federal Procurement Contract Data, and studied the relationship of fraud, competition and contract types. In the first section, I studied a procurement game and found that if the firms' types are close enough to each other, their strategies regarding whether or not …

Sequential And Non-Sequential Licensing Of Innovation With Potential Entrants, Chang Zhao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation consists of two essays that study the economic impact of innovations when the buyers are not symmetric. Namely, when potential licensees involves both entrants and incumbent firms. In Chapter 2, a non-sequential licensing approach is analyzed. Licenses in this chapter are sold simultaneously by auction aiming to maximize the revenue of the innovator. The post innovation market structure, the diffusion of the innovation and the incentive to innovate are analyzed and compared with the case where licenses are sold only to incumbent firms and not to entrants. In Chapter 3, a sequential licensing approach is analyzed in a …

Mesh Refinement And High-Order Reconstruction For Finite Element Methods On Unstructured Meshes, Xinglin Zhao Dec 2016

Mesh Refinement And High-Order Reconstruction For Finite Element Methods On Unstructured Meshes, Xinglin Zhao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In large scale simulations of complex partial differential equations (PDE’s) using finite element methods (FEM), mesh generation, remeshing and linear solver are the most vital steps to obtain accurate solutions. All these areas have been explored quite extensively. We seek to develop an integrated framework for these steps. During simulation it is often desirable to start with a relatively coarse mesh and then refine the mesh accordingly (since in most cases the criteria for mesh resolution is not known a priori). The mesh hierarchy generated from mesh refinement could be utilized by efficient linear solvers like geometric multigrid methods (GMG), …

Sdn-Based Wsn Routing Protocol, Divith Aruni Babu Dec 2016

Sdn-Based Wsn Routing Protocol, Divith Aruni Babu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis aims to find out whether a centralized routing protocol with a dynamic routing table could perform as well as a decentralized routing protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). Towards this goal, a Software-defined Networking (SDN) based protocol is proposed and its performance is measured against a popular decentralized routing protocol, Control Tree Protocol (CTP). The goal is to investigate whether an implementation of SDN in a sensor network would offer WSN applications an advantage by compromising on autonomy to possibly increase efficiency and application diversity. This thesis shows that, although the performance of the SDN-based protocol is inferior …

The infrared molecular absorption spectra of certain gases are used for the spectroscopic detection of the presence or concentration of gas. Various and unique techniques utilizing this spectrum have been employed to improve detection, each with its own merits. CIPS (Correlated interference polarization spectroscopy) is unique in how it provides high sensitivity along with high selectivity. The work presented builds on the achievements of CIPS as it was developed by BAH Holdings and its members. This Dissertation reports on modelling of CIPS and its constituents such as the electro-optical modulator. The development of the generator used in this system was …

Analog Circuit Design Knowledge Mining And Circuit Causal Information Modeling, Fanshu Jiao Dec 2016

Analog Circuit Design Knowledge Mining And Circuit Causal Information Modeling, Fanshu Jiao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis proposes novel approaches for analog circuit design knowledge mining and circuit causal information modeling. In particular, knowledge mining discovers and decomposes analog circuit design knowledge into three components: (1) a conceptual hierarchy for a group of circuit topologies, (2) circuits' performance capabilities (including trade-offs and bottlenecks), and (3) circuits' design causal reasoning strategies. Causal reasoning strategies lead to the development of reasoning-based topology synthesis and design verification, thus bring new perspective to existing approaches. Extended from performance capabilities, the thesis proposes circuit causal information modeling, which models relations of parameters deciding circuit performance attributes and coupling with other …

Part 1. A Study On Delay Tolerant Network Algorithm For Vanet Part 2. An Efficient Mu-Mimo Precoding Operation With Zf And Mmse, Taek Keun Lyu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Part 1. In this paper, we learn how to select the Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) routing protocols according to dynamic network environment in wireless ad hoc network. Basically, providing access to the Internet or other network services with low mobile density is quite difficult for disconnection and long delay. One of the solutions in this problem is using Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANET) with DTN. There are a variety of DTNs, relying on the different network environment. We categorize the DTNs routing protocols. Also, we use simulations to compare that DTN routing protocols lead to reduce end-to-end delay and higher message …

Investigating The Tolerance Of Wirelessly Powered Charge-Recycling Logic To Power-Clock Phase Difference Deviations, Sushil Panda Dec 2016

Investigating The Tolerance Of Wirelessly Powered Charge-Recycling Logic To Power-Clock Phase Difference Deviations, Sushil Panda

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Internet-of-things (IoT) has emerged as an exciting application domain for semiconductor electronics. Recently, a new circuit design framework has been developed where charge-recycling circuits were leveraged to wirelessly power IoT based devices. Most of the existing charge-recycling circuits require multiple AC signals (referred to as power-clock signals) with certain phase difference to operate. The primary objective of this thesis is to investigate the tolerance of wirelessly powered charge-recycling circuits to non-ideal phase differences among power-clock signals. The operation principle of the most common charge-recycling (also referred to as adiabatic) circuits is described. The power consumed by efficient charge recovery logic …

Fully Integrated Hybrid Voltage Regulator For Low Voltage Applications, Yongwan Park Dec 2016

Fully Integrated Hybrid Voltage Regulator For Low Voltage Applications, Yongwan Park

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A novel hybrid regulator topology is proposed to alleviate the weaknesses of existing hybrid topologies. Contrary to the dominant existing practice, a switched-capacitor converter and a resistorless LDO operate in a parallel fashion to supply current and regulate the output voltage. The proposed topology targets a fully integrated regulator without using any inductors and resistors. The primary emphasis is on maximizing power efficiency while maintaining sufficient regulation capability (with ripple voltage less than 10% of the output voltage) and power density. The first implementation of the proposed topology operates in a single frequency mode. Simulation results in 45 nm technology …

Investigations Of Electronic And Optical Sources In The Mid Infrared And Terahertz Regions, Thakur Siddharth Singh

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Fundamental sources of mid-infrared and terahertz radiation are of the utmost importance for applications such as chemical sensing, molecular spec- troscopy, imaging and telecommunications to name a few. Practical realiza- tions of room temperature fundamental sources in the terahertz region are often hampered by low power and poor temperature performance and this is referred to as the Terahertz gap. This work presents investigations of Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCL) as optical sources of mid-infrared radiation and the proposal of a novel electronic oscillator in the extremely important terahertz region based on a single layer of a suspended graphene sheet. Monte Carlo …

Form And Function Of The Anthropoid Forefoot, Pedro J. Fernandez Dec 2016

Form And Function Of The Anthropoid Forefoot, Pedro J. Fernandez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The transition to our uniquely human gait—terrestrial bipedalism—is the hallmark of our lineage. Abundant fossil evidence confirms that it was the adoption of a terrestrial bipedal gait that first set hominins apart from other apes. Therefore, a thorough understanding of postcranial functional morphology is necessary in order to gain as much insight as possible from the current known fossil material. When compared to our closest relatives, the living apes, it is clear that a suite of morphological changes have occurred in the human postcranial skeleton broadly, including modifications at the vertebral column, shoulder, wrist, hand, pelvis, ankle and foot. The …

Enhancing Power And Signal Integrity In Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits, Hailang Wang Dec 2016

Enhancing Power And Signal Integrity In Three-Dimensional Integrated Circuits, Hailang Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Three-dimensional (3D) integration has emerged as an enabling technology for integrated circuits (ICs) in the interconnect-centric design era, where the interconnects have become a bottleneck for the overall system performance. With 3D integration technology, multiple planar dies are stacked vertically while the communication among different dies is achieved by low impedance vertical connections such as through silicon vias (TSVs) or monolithic inter-tier vias (MIVs). Due to the unique characteristics of 3D ICs, various challenges exist in the fabrication, design and testing of 3D integrated systems. The research work proposed in this dissertation is focused on 3D design methodologies with emphasis …

Shrouded In The Womb Of A Savage, Cradled In The Arms Of An Ape: Gothic Scenes Of Racial Recapitulation In The Making Of The American Übermensch | Shrouded In The Womb Of A Savage, Cradled In The Arms Of An Ape: Gothic Scenes Of Racial Recapitulation In The Making Of The American Übermensch, Ian Anthony Bacchus

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Slavery is often put forward as the crucial horror that haunts the nation, and is touted, as Leslie Fiedler noted, as “the proper subject for American Gothic†. This thesis does not dispute a historical location for the American Gothic, but it argues for a different starting place for the self-consciously Gothic impulse in the literature of the nation. It is not the original sin of slavery that underpins the American Gothic, but the original anxiety experienced by an infant nation as it first distances itself from its ancestral country, and then asserts its independence and superiority. It is an …

Retellings And Counterfactual Narratives: The Possibilities Of Twentieth- And Twenty-First-Century British Literature, Emma Brinkmeyer Dec 2016

Retellings And Counterfactual Narratives: The Possibilities Of Twentieth- And Twenty-First-Century British Literature, Emma Brinkmeyer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation examines the counterfactual – the consideration of “what might have been†– as a key political, ethical, and aesthetic tool of the literature of modernism. As an imagining of other possibilities than what came to pass, the counterfactual unveils alternative spaces and times that lie outside of traditional narrative structure. I establish that counterfactual time is an empowering political and ethical space. Beginning with an extended discussion of James Joyce’s Ulysses, I show how counterfactual thinking challenges the discursive power of historical narrative and thus enables the expression of marginalized or silenced histories and experiences. In doing so, …

Othering The Mother: Traumatic Effects Of Motherhood On The Formation Of Identity In Toni Morrison’S Beloved | Othering The Mother: Traumatic Effects Of Motherhood On The Formation Of Identity In Toni Morrison’S Beloved, Gabriella Elizabeth Greco

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

As a text based heavily on tropes from both American Gothic literature and the slave narrative genre, Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved serves as a complex and delicate commentary on racial ambiguities and the psychologically haunting effects of African American trauma. These ambiguities simultaneously serve as reasons for and consequences of the various traumas that strain the interpersonal relationships between the female characters. Aside from the most blatant and gruesome trauma of the novel—the infanticide that Sethe commits as an act of mercy for her unnamed child—many of the recurring traumatic memories evoke the challenges of motherhood during slavery. | As …

Elaine's "Priceless" Pearls And Enid's Faded Dress: The Self And The Thing In "Lancelot And Elaine" And "The Marriage Of Geraint", Jordan Elizabeth Plavnicky Dec 2016

Elaine's "Priceless" Pearls And Enid's Faded Dress: The Self And The Thing In "Lancelot And Elaine" And "The Marriage Of Geraint", Jordan Elizabeth Plavnicky

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis takes an object-oriented approach to Tennyson’s Idylls of the King through an analysis of Elaine’s pearled sleeve in “Lancelot and Elaine†and Enid’s faded dress in “The Marriage of Geraint.†It considers the pearl as a thing; a thing that can be exchanged, a thing against which one can orient and identify the self, and finally a thing that exists already within English cultural history. It considers Enid’s dress as a material garment upon which numerous meanings can be inscribed. The thesis argues that Elaine and Enid each demonstrate the unique role women have in relation to their …

From Text To Screen: John Green And The Rise Of Digital Literacy, Jessica Pond

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Social media is rapidly becoming more prevalent in modern society. Businesses, politicians, and educators are using social media as an increasingly important tool of communication and information. In my thesis, I examine the implications of the growing importance of social media on young adult authors and the way that literacy is perceived. While social media is often seen as existing purely for entertainment, many educational professionals are bringing aspects of social media into classrooms as instructive and informational tools. Through close examination of the works of John Green and his activities on social media, this thesis addresses the ways in …

Digitizing The Novel, 1987-2010, Bradley Reina Dec 2016

Digitizing The Novel, 1987-2010, Bradley Reina

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The novel is digital, it was digital, and it will be digital. Most authors have written on word processors and most publishers have made books with some form of desktop publishing software since the early 1990s. The first novels for digital display were written and published in the late 1980s. From a literary perspective, the question is whether such digital-born literature translates into palpable changes in the novel form, why, and how. Previous theories of the meeting of digital technology and literature have all too often presented a predetermined fate for this pairing—an essentialist vision of literature, technology, or both. …

The Human To Come: Representations Of Human In Literary Modernity’S Testimonial "I" | The Human To Come: Representations Of Human In Literary Modernity’S Testimonial "I", Kerry Suzanne Spooner

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

With the concern for human rights always present to this project, I explore in the initial chapters the precariousness of the first-person singular subjective “I†in both testimonial and fictional texts and its bearing on human rights. In practice, first-person narratives, whether as life-writing or fictional, are textual spaces in which writers’ concerns that deal with human conditions are frequently articulated. By examining the first-person narrative function in selected texts of Gertrude Stein, Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, and Samuel Beckett, this dissertation shows how conceptual imaginings of the concept of the human and human embodiment are unsettled. These exemplar modernist …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

A large amount of American literature is based on themes of identity construction. Several authors make the argument that a true American identity is one that is self-created as opposed to ones made based on societal stereotypes. Yet often, the issue that arise from this central theme is that it takes traumatic episodes to come to this realization. In A Gathering of Old Men by Ernest Gains, the old black men of the town are subjugated and have their identity placed upon them by society, with the label in this case being “them black folk.†Similarly, in Invisible Man, Ralph …

Jane Austen From Page To Screen: How Current Society And " Pride And Prejudice" Have Shaped " Northanger Abbey," " Persuasion," And " Mansfield Park" On Film, Stephanie Ann Reese

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

While Jane Austen’s novels were published over two hundred years ago, her stories continue to captivate audiences through print and the screen. There seems to be a growing tradition of adapting certain novels, such as Pride and Prejudice, over other ones like, Northanger Abbey, Persuasion, and Mansfield Park. In this paper I explore how the former three novels differ from Pride and Prejudice from their heroines and heroes to the romantic relationships between the two protagonists. Then I take into consideration the large impact of Colin Firth’s Mr. Darcy in influencing Austen’s other heroes such as Captain Wentworth, Henry Tilney …
