The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal

German author Martin Walser paints a thrilling story of human identity in his 1978 novel, Ein fliehendes Pferd (Runaway Horse). Nothing in the story is completely black or white, even in the personalities of the dichotomous characters Helmut Halm and Klaus Buch. But the novel does offer an implicit opportunity for both characters, should they risk the first step towards change in their lives. My analysis compares the similarities and differences between these two main characters’ “escape attempts,” investigates the meaning of the main theme (the runaway horse), and interprets the intentional ambiguity of the novel’s ending. As a result of the recent Citizens United decision and its “Super PAC” spawn, individuals, corporations, and unions are allowed to independently spend unlimited amounts to influence elections. The ramifications of the Citizens United ruling have seemingly had a grave impact on the 2016 Presidential Election. In addition to examining the laws—and their loopholes—of political campaign contributions, this Essay will also explore the economics of campaign contributions. The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) was created for the purpose of providing legal neutrality and certainty, and also for the purpose of avoiding choice of law issues in international sales of goods. However, the United States and China, the two largest trading nations in the world, made the Article 95 reservation at the time they ratified the CISG, therefore restricting CISG’s applicability in certain situations. In recent years, consumers in the United States have been confronted by no fewer than four competing fair-trade labels, each grounded in a separate certification system and widely differing standards. This fracturing is partly a response to the recent split by the U.S. certifier Fair Trade USA from the international fair trade system, but also illustrates longstanding divisions within the fair trade movement. The Moderating Effects Of Savoring Positive Life Experiences On The Relationship Between Combat Exposure And Mental Health Symptoms, Anton I. Sytine

Engaging in firefights or witnessing death and other types of combat experiencesare occupational hazards associated with combat exposure facing military personnel. Thepresent study examined whether savoring beliefs moderate the relationship betweencombat exposure and negative mental health symptoms among U.S. Army soldiersdeployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF).Soldiers (N = 885) deployed on at least one combat operation completed a measure ofcombat exposure, savoring beliefs, depression and PTSD at two time periods separatedby five months. Correlational and multiple regression analyses were conducted to assessthe relationship between variables and for the moderating effect of savoring. Savoringwas found to …

Since the formation of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949, China’s political leaders have given priority to securing the country’s sovereignty, national unification, and territorial integrity. This has involved pursuing foreign relations that contribute to an international environment that is conducive to the country’s peaceful development as a prosperous socialist society. In pursuing these strategic goals, the Chinese government and state-owned corporations seek to establish economic and political relations with the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries that are based on the principles and practices of South–South cooperation (SSC).
