Reactions Of Sandhill Cranes Approaching A Marked Transmission Power Line, Robert K. Murphy, James F. Dwyer, Elizabeth K. Mojica, Michelle M. Mcpherron, Richard E. Harness
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
Sandhill cranes Antigone canadensis, formerly Grus canadensis, are of widespread management focus, particularly where collisions with power lines are an important cause of mortality. Collision mitigation focuses on marking power lines to increase visibility, but collisions persist, perhaps because power line markers are not sufficiently visible in all conditions. Our objective was to compare reaction distances and reaction behaviors during daylight when power lines are presumably more visible, and during darkness when power lines are less visible. The power line we studied was fitted with glow-in-the-dark power line markers intended to increase nocturnal visibility. We found that during daylight, flocks …
Reduction Of A Nilpotent Intuitionistic Fuzzy Matrix Using Implication Operator, Riyaz A. Padder, P. Murugadas
Reduction Of A Nilpotent Intuitionistic Fuzzy Matrix Using Implication Operator, Riyaz A. Padder, P. Murugadas
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
A problem of reducing intuitionistic fuzzy matrices is examined and some useful properties are obtained with respect to nilpotent intutionistic fuzzy matrices. First, reduction of irreflexive and transitive intuitionistic fuzzy matrices are considered, and then the properties are applied to nilpotent intutionistic fuzzy matrices. Nilpotent intuitionistic fuzzy matrices are intuitionistic fuzzy matrices which signify acyclic graphs, and the graphs are used to characterize consistent systems. The properties are handy for generalization of various systems with intuitionistic fuzzy transitivity.
Hydromagnetic Peristaltic Transportation With Porous Medium Through An Asymmetric Vertical Tapered Channel And Joule Heating, S. R. Kumar
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
The present paper deals with a theoretical investigation of the hydromagnetic peristaltic transportation with porous medium through coaxial asymmetric vertical tapered channel and joule heating which has been studied under the assumption of long wavelength approximations. Exact analytical expressions of axial velocity, volume flow rate, pressure gradient, temperature and heat transfer coefficient at both walls were calculated. The effects of various emerging parameters, Hartmann number, Non-uniform parameter, Prandtl number, Heat generator parameter, Brinkman number, Porous parameter are discussed through the use of graphs. We notice from the figures that the temperature of the fluid increases in the entire vertical tapered …
Solution Of A Cauchy Singular Fractional Integro-Differential Equation In Bernstein Polynomial Basis, Avipsita Chatterjee, Uma Basu, B. N. Mandal
Solution Of A Cauchy Singular Fractional Integro-Differential Equation In Bernstein Polynomial Basis, Avipsita Chatterjee, Uma Basu, B. N. Mandal
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
This article proposes a simple method to obtain approximate numerical solution of a singular fractional order integro-differential equation with Cauchy kernel by using Bernstein polynomials as basis. The fractional derivative is described in Caputo sense. The properties of Bernstein polynomials are used to reduce the fractional order integro-differential equation to the solution of algebraic equations. The numerical results obtained by the present method compares favorably with those obtained earlier for the first order integro-differential equation. Also the convergence of the method is established rigorously.
Non-Inflationary Bianchi Type Vi0 Model In Rosen’S Bimetric Gravity, M. S. Borkar, N. P. Gaikwad
Non-Inflationary Bianchi Type Vi0 Model In Rosen’S Bimetric Gravity, M. S. Borkar, N. P. Gaikwad
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
In this paper, we have present the solution of Bianchi type VI0 space-time by solving the Rosen’s field equations with massless scalar field φ and with constant scalar potential V(φ) for flat region. It is observed that the scalar field φ is an increasing function of time and affects the physical parameters of the model and leads to non-inflationary type solution of model, which contradicts the inflationary scenario. Other geometrical and physical properties of the model in relation to this non-inflationary model are also studied.
Density-Dependent Leslie Matrix Modeling For Logistic Populations With Steady-State Distribution Control, Bruce Kessler, Andrew Davis
Density-Dependent Leslie Matrix Modeling For Logistic Populations With Steady-State Distribution Control, Bruce Kessler, Andrew Davis
Mathematics Faculty Publications
The Leslie matrix model allows for the discrete modeling of population age-groups whose total population grows exponentially. Many attempts have been made to adapt this model to a logistic model with a carrying capacity (see [1], [2], [4], [5], and [6]), with mixed results. In this paper we provide a new model for logistic populations that tracks age-group populations with repeated multiplication of a density-dependent matrix constructed from an original Leslie matrix, the chosen carrying capacity of the model, and the desired steady-state age-group distribution. The total populations from the model converge to a discrete logistic model with the same …
R. L. Stevenson’S Samoan Gothic: Representing Late Nineteenth-Century Plantations, Carla Manfredi
R. L. Stevenson’S Samoan Gothic: Representing Late Nineteenth-Century Plantations, Carla Manfredi
Pacific Studies
Sāmoa’s plantation landscape haunts Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1892 text, A Footnote to History: Eight Years of Trouble in Samoa. Stevenson represents the German-run plantations as sites of gothic terror, which are haunted by the ghosts of indentured laborers. In this essay, I examine Stevenson’s accounts of German plantation culture alongside corollary narratives from Sāmoa’s three commercial newspapers: the Samoa Times and South Sea Gazette (1877–81) the Samoa Times and South Sea Advertiser (1888–96), and the Samoa Weekly Herald (1892–1900). By juxtaposing some of Stevenson’s primary texts and local newspaper coverage, I not only identify the divergent discourses that shaped …

Moderating “Cry Wolf” Events With Excess Mad In Benford's Law Research And Practice, Bradley J. Barney, Kurt S. Schulzke
Moderating “Cry Wolf” Events With Excess Mad In Benford's Law Research And Practice, Bradley J. Barney, Kurt S. Schulzke
Accountancy Faculty Publications
False positives or “Type I errors,” wherein test results indicate fraud where none actually exists, have been described as a costly “cry wolf problem” in auditing practice. Benford's Law, which is used as one tool among many in screening for financial statement manipulation, is especially prone to false positives when applied to small and moderately sized datasets. Relying in part on Monte Carlo simulations, we describe with greater precision than extant literature the mathematical correlation between N and Mean Absolute Deviation (MAD), a statistic increasingly used for assessing deviation from Benford's Law. We recommend replacing MAD with an alternative, Excess …

Misuse Of Company Time: How The Internet And Social Media Are Creating A New Time Theft, Ryan Hancock
Misuse Of Company Time: How The Internet And Social Media Are Creating A New Time Theft, Ryan Hancock
Supply Chain Management Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study examines how social media and online shopping are providing new forms of employee time theft for companies and considers the impact they have on productivity. Whether the trends are actually apparent was then connected to an individual’s perception of whether stealing company time is unethical. Data was obtained in this study through a survey. The survey was conducted through direct and behavioral questions of participants. The first half of the survey contained direct questions measuring the respondent’s own usage of social media, their online shopping habits, and whether they do these activities while working. The second half of …

Die Münzen Des Fortschritts: Eine Analyse Der Währungsunion 25 Jahre Später, Jaime Saengel
The Kennesaw Tower Undergraduate Foreign Language Research Journal
In this article, I challenge the notion that the Währungsunion, or currency union between East and West Germany, was unsuccessful. Through synthesizing sources from the 90s, research from the 25th anniversary year of German unity, and concepts from microeconomic theory, a more holistic view of the rushed Währungsunion arises, with respect to both its social costs and economic benefits. Despite the human costs of the Währungsunion, such as higher unemployment rates and social discontent, the argument I subsequently raise is that the rushed Währungsunion offered the best alternative for Germany in 1990, especially in consideration of the poor economic situation …

Stronger Together: The Reality Of Humanities Curriculum In A Stem Focused Era, Morgan Dalton
Stronger Together: The Reality Of Humanities Curriculum In A Stem Focused Era, Morgan Dalton
Honors Theses
The world of education is constantly changing. However, the way the pendulum is currently swinging has placed the Humanities, what has been seen as the framework since ancient times, under attack. Currently, that pendulum has become predominately focused on STEM education, and many budget cuts are being made to any part of the curriculum that does not fall under that category. This is not only seen in college and the job market, but in K-12 education. Pre-service teachers focusing on a STEM subject are often offered more incentives. Many college bound students are also shying away from the arts, especially …

© 2016. The Authors. Phase 1 of the CGILS large-eddy simulation (LES) intercomparison is extended to understand if subtropical marine boundary-layer clouds respond to idealized climate perturbations consistently in six LES models. Here the responses to quadrupled carbon dioxide (“fast adjustment”) and to a composite climate perturbation representative of CMIP3 multimodel mean 2×CO2 near-equilibrium conditions are analyzed. As in Phase 1, the LES is run to equilibrium using specified steady summertime forcings representative of three locations in the Northeast Pacific Ocean in shallow well-mixed stratocumulus, decoupled stratocumulus, and shallow cumulus cloud regimes. The results are generally consistent with a single-LES …

What Determines The Fate Of Rising Parcels In A Heterogeneous Environment?, Maren Brast, Roel A.J. Neggers, Thijs Heus
Physics Faculty Publications
© 2016. The Authors. We investigate the potential impact of the local environment on rising parcels in a convective boundary layer. To this end, we use data from an LES simulation of a shallow convective cloud field to feed a parcel model with a range of different local environments, representative of the heterogeneous environment inside a shallow cumulus cloud layer. With this method we can study the statistics of an ensemble of rising parcels, but also the behavior of individual parcels. Through the use of a heterogeneous environment, the interactions between different parcels are indirectly represented. The method, despite its …

A Heuristic Solution Of The Toll Optimal Problem With Congestion Affected Costs, Vyacheslav Kalashnikov, José Guadalupe Flores Muñiz, Nataliya Kalashnykova
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
An important problem concerning the toll roads is the setting of appropriate costs for driving along paid arcs of a transportation network. Our paper treats this problem as a bilevel programming model. At the upper level, decisions are made by a public regulator/private company that administers the toll roads endeavoring to elevate their benefits. At the lower level, several transportation companies/individual users appease the existing demand for transportation of goods or passengers while selecting the routes that would minimize their total travel costs. In contrast to the previous models, here the lower level problem assumes quadratic costs implied by the …

Maintaining Momentum Toward Graduation: Oer And The Course Throughput Rate, John Hilton Iii, Lane Fischer, David Wiley, Linda Williams
Entrepreneurship Faculty Research
Open Educational Resources (OER) have the potential to replace traditional textbooks in higher education. Previous studies indicate that use of OER results in high student and faculty satisfaction, lower costs, and similar or better educational outcomes. In this case study, we compared students using traditional textbooks with those using OER at Tidewater Community College to compare their performance on what we call course throughput rates, which is an aggregate of three variables – drop rates, withdrawal rates, and C or better rates. Two self-selecting cohorts were compared over four semesters, with statistically significant results. The study found that, subject to …

The African American Community In Ogden, Utah: Teaching Local History Within A National Framework, Michelle Braeden
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Historical Background:
Beginning in 1869, the newly built Union Station in Ogden Utah became a major terminal for the transcontinental railroad. Around that same time George Pullman began recruiting emancipated slaves as employees on his luxury railroad cars. As a result a sizeable number of African Americans began working on the railroad. Many African Americans found residence in Ogden since it was a major railroad hub. As a result a small African American neighborhood that was six blocks long and two blocks wide formed in the city.[1] Businesses and organizations formed to support the emerging African American community within …

On The Vulnerabilities Of Voronoi-Based Approaches To Mobile Sensor Deployment, Novella Bartolini, Stefano Ciavarella, Simone Silvestri, Thomas La Porta
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Mobile sensor networks are the most promising solution to cover an Area of Interest (AoI) in safety critical scenarios. Mobile devices can coordinate with each other according to a distributed deployment algorithm, without resorting to human supervision for device positioning and network configuration. In this paper, we focus on the vulnerabilities of the deployment algorithms based on Voronoi diagrams to coordinate mobile sensors and guide their movements. We give a geometric characterization of possible attack configurations, proving that a simple attack consisting of a barrier of few compromised sensors can severely reduce network coverage. On the basis of the above …

Cloud-Enhanced Robotic System For Smart City Crowd Control, Akhlaqur Rahman, Jiong Jin, Antonio Cricenti, Ashfaqur Rahman, Marimuthu Palaniswami, Tony Tie Luo
Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works
Cloud robotics in smart cities is an emerging paradigm that enables autonomous robotic agents to communicate and collaborate with a cloud computing infrastructure. It complements the Internet of Things (IoT) by creating an expanded network where robots offload data-intensive computation to the ubiquitous cloud to ensure quality of service (QoS). However, offloading for robots is significantly complex due to their unique characteristics of mobility, skill-learning, data collection, and decision-making capabilities. In this paper, a generic cloud robotics framework is proposed to realize smart city vision while taking into consideration its various complexities. Specifically, we present an integrated framework for a …
