Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Drosophila suzukii (Matsumara) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), the spotted wing drosophila, is a global pest of soft fruits now rearable on a standard D. melanogaster (Meigen) diet containing the fly's own natural food: soft-skinned berries. The techniques tested here can save 40% of cultures from microbial contamination that develops after combining artificial food sources (e.g., standard drosophila media) with unsterilized host plant material (berries). A suitable ratio for mixing dietary ingredients for a vial or test-tube rearing system includes, by weight, 1 part berry tissue for oviposition, 1.5 parts dry diet media for carbohydrate, 7 parts clean water for moisture, and ∼5 …

Interplanetary Mission Design With Applications To Guidance And Optimal Control Of Aero-Assisted Trajectories, Peter J. Edelman Dec 2016

Interplanetary Mission Design With Applications To Guidance And Optimal Control Of Aero-Assisted Trajectories, Peter J. Edelman

Open Access Dissertations

A method for finding optimal aerogravity-assist tours of the solar system is developed using indirect methods. Two cost functionals are used in the optimization; finding the minimum required maximum lift-to-drag ratio, with and without a convective heating-rate path constraint, and the path which provides the minimum total stagnation point convective heat load. It is found that using present or near-future thermal protection system materials will suffice for certain aerogravity assist trajectories at Mars. Minimum heat load optimal trajectories are found for aerocapture maneuvers at Uranus and Neptune. With a large radius, and short rotational periods, atmospheric rotation must be taken …

Statistical Modeling And Simulation Of Variability And Reliability Of Cmos Technology, Khaled Hassan Md Dec 2016

Statistical Modeling And Simulation Of Variability And Reliability Of Cmos Technology, Khaled Hassan Md

Open Access Dissertations

The introduction of High-κ Metal Gate transistors led to higher integration density, low leakage current, and faster switching speed. However, this transition in technology roadmap brought about new failure mechanisms such as Positive Bias Temperature Instability and Stress Induced Leakage Current. In addition, the relentless downscaling of devices to keep up with Moore's law has significantly increased the time-zero variability caused by Random Dopant Fluctuation, Mean Gate Length Deviation, and Line Edge Roughness. Because of their possible correlation with time dependent aging effects, the quantification of reliability has become more complex than ever. To that effect, we propose a framework …

Efficient Processing Of Similarity Queries With Applications, Mingjie Tang Dec 2016

Efficient Processing Of Similarity Queries With Applications, Mingjie Tang

Open Access Dissertations

Today, a myriad of data sources, from the Internet to business operations to scientific instruments, produce large and different types of data. Many application scenarios, e.g., marketing analysis, sensor networks, and medical and biological applications, call for identifying and processing similarities in "big" data. As a result, it is imperative to develop new similarity query processing approaches and systems that scale from low dimensional data to high dimensional data, from single machine to clusters of hundreds of machines, and from disk-based to memory-based processing. This dissertation introduces and studies several similarity-aware query operators, analyzes and optimizes their performance.

The first …

Billbug (Sphenophorus Spp.) Chemical Ecology And Seasonal Biology In Indiana Turfgrass, Alexandra G. Duffy Dec 2016

Billbug (Sphenophorus Spp.) Chemical Ecology And Seasonal Biology In Indiana Turfgrass, Alexandra G. Duffy

Open Access Theses

Billbugs (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea: Sphenophorus) are serious pests of managed turfgrass across North America. Damage symptoms are most visible during stressful periods of the growing season and are commonly confused with disease, drought, or nutrient deficiency. Billbugs are frequently a perennial problem and when misdiagnosed, damage often results in seriously degraded stands of turfgrass that are easily encroached by weeds. Presently, management of billbugs relies heavily on chemical insecticides. Even then, the nationwide assemblage of multiple sympatric billbug species and the cryptic nature of the damaging larval stage makes management of these insects challenging. A better understanding of billbug biology …

Early Bearing Fault Analysis Using High Frequency Enveloping Techniques, Ilya Shulkin Dec 2016

Early Bearing Fault Analysis Using High Frequency Enveloping Techniques, Ilya Shulkin

Open Access Theses

High frequency acceleration enveloping is one of many tools that vibration analysts have at their disposal for the diagnosis of bearing faults in rotating machinery. This technique is believed to facilitate very early detection of potential failures by detecting low amplitude repetitive impacts in frequency ranges above conventional condition monitoring. One traditional enveloping method uses a mathematical operation known as the Hilbert transform along with other signal processing procedures such as band-pass filtering and full-wave rectification. For comparison, another method uses a proprietary algorithm included in National Instruments’ LabVIEWTM add-on package: Sound and Measurement Suite. Enveloping’s inherent problem with noise …

The Swiss German Language And Identity: Stereotyping Between The Aargau And The Zurich Dialects, Jessica Rohr Dec 2016

The Swiss German Language And Identity: Stereotyping Between The Aargau And The Zurich Dialects, Jessica Rohr

Open Access Theses

Swiss German dialects contribute to the social identity of a speaker, especially on a local level (Christen, 1995). Many dialects of Switzerland are associated with a common stereotype which relates to the identity of the speakers (Rash, 2002). This research looks at these notions and investigates concepts of identity ascription and stereotyping that arise between and from the dialects of canton Aargau and canton Zürich, in Switzerland. The generation of a definition of identity for the project, drawing off existing identity theories in sociolinguistics, and stereotyping theories, allow for an investigation of how the Aargau and Zürich dialects fit into …

United States V. Klintock: Reconsideration Of United States V. Palmer As To General Piracy As Defined By The Law Of Nations Through The Applicable Standards Of Political Action Of Acknowledgement And Recognition And The Status Of Statelessness, Justin L. Sieffert

Legal History Publications

During the February 1820 Term, the Supreme Court of the United States decided four significant piracy cases, beginning with United States v. Klintock. Political, economic, and social pressures enhanced the problem of piracy affecting the interests of the United States. Responding to the criticism of his decision in United States v. Palmer and the passage of the Act of 1819 state Congressional intent for defining piracy by the “law of nations,” Marshall authored the decision in Klintock distinguishing Palmer and, upon reconsideration, interpreting the Act of 1790 to include general piracy as defined by the “law of nations.” With …

Random Variational-Like Inclusion And Random Proximal Operator Equation For Random Fuzzy Mappings In Banach Spaces, Rais Ahmad, Iqbal Ahmad, Mijanur Rahaman Dec 2016

Random Variational-Like Inclusion And Random Proximal Operator Equation For Random Fuzzy Mappings In Banach Spaces, Rais Ahmad, Iqbal Ahmad, Mijanur Rahaman

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we introduce and study a random variational-like inclusion and its corresponding random proximal operator equation for random fuzzy mappings. It is established that the random variational-like inclusion problem for random fuzzy mappings is equivalent to a random fixed point problem. We also establish a relationship between random variational-like inclusion and random proximal operator equation for random fuzzy mappings. This equivalence is used to define an iterative algorithm for solving random proximal operator equation for random fuzzy mappings. Through an example, we show that the random Wardrop equilibrium problem is a special case of the random variational-like inclusion …

On The Convergence Of Two-Dimensional Fuzzy Volterra-Fredholm Integral Equations By Using Picard Method, Ali Ebadian, Foroozan Farahrooz, Amirahmad Khajehnasiri

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper we prove convergence of the method of successive approximations used to approximate the solution of nonlinear two-dimensional Volterra-Fredholm integral equations and define the notion of numerical stability of the algorithm with respect to the choice of the first iteration. Also we present an iterative procedure to solve such equations. Finally, the method is illustrated by solving some examples.

Dispersion Characteristics Of Non-Newtonian Fluid During Transportation Of Nanoparticles In Permeable Capillary, Rekha Bali, Nivedita Gupta, Swati Mishra Dec 2016

Dispersion Characteristics Of Non-Newtonian Fluid During Transportation Of Nanoparticles In Permeable Capillary, Rekha Bali, Nivedita Gupta, Swati Mishra

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

The present analysis deals with the dispersion characteristics of blood described as Herschel- Bulkley fluid in capillary with permeable walls for fluid and impermeable for the nanoparticles. The contribution of molecular and convective diffusion is recalled from the Taylor and Aris coefficient of diffusion. The effective longitudinal diffusion depends on three parameters namely rheological parameter, pressure parameter, and the permeability parameter. We investigate the influence of the longitudinal transport of nanoparticles with permeable blood vessels on the effective dispersion. It shows that the effective diffusion of nanoparticles reduces with increase in radius of the plug region (i.e., the volume of …

Generalized I Of Strongly Lacunary Of X2 Over P-Metric Spaces Defined By Musielak Orlicz Function, Deepmala Deepmala, N. Subramanian, Lakshmi N. Mishra

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper, we introduce generalized difference sequence spaces via ideal convergence, lacunary of x2 sequence spaces over p-metric spaces defined by Musielak function, and examine the Musielak-Orlicz function which satisfies uniform Δ2 condition, and we also discuss some topological properties of the resulting spaces of x2 with respect to ideal structures which is solid and monotone. Hence, given an example of the space x2 this is not solid and not monotone. This theory is very useful for statistical convergence and also is applicable to rough convergence.

A Generalized Polynomial Identity Arising From Quantum Mechanics, Shashikant B. Mulay, John J. Quinn, Mark A. Shattuck Dec 2016

A Generalized Polynomial Identity Arising From Quantum Mechanics, Shashikant B. Mulay, John J. Quinn, Mark A. Shattuck

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

We establish a general identity that expresses a Pfaffian of a certain matrix as a quotient of homogeneous polynomials. This identity arises in the study of weakly interacting many-body systems and its proof provides another way of realizing the equivalence of two proposed types of trial wave functions used to describe such systems. In the proof of our identity, we make use of only elementary linear algebra and combinatorics and thereby avoid use of more advanced conformal field theory in establishing the aforementioned equivalence.

On Arresting The Complex Growth Rates In Rotatory Triply Diffusive Convection, Jyoti Prakash, Renu Bala, Kanu Vaid, Vinod Kumar Dec 2016

On Arresting The Complex Growth Rates In Rotatory Triply Diffusive Convection, Jyoti Prakash, Renu Bala, Kanu Vaid, Vinod Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

Linear stability of a triply diffusive fluid layer (one of the components may be heat) has been mathematically analyzed in the presence of uniform vertical rotation. Upper bounds for the complex growth rate of an arbitrary oscillatory perturbation of growing amplitude are derived which are important especially when at least one of the boundaries is rigid so that exact solutions in closed form are not obtainable. Further, it is proved that the results obtained herein are uniformly valid for any combination of dynamically free and rigid boundaries. It is also shown that the existing results of rotatory hydrodynamic Rayleigh Benard …

A Numerical Scheme For Generalized Fractional Optimal Control Problems, N. Singha, C. Nahak Dec 2016

A Numerical Scheme For Generalized Fractional Optimal Control Problems, N. Singha, C. Nahak

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

This paper introduces a generalization of the Fractional Optimal Control Problem (GFOCP). Proposed generalizations differ in terms of explaining the constraint involved in the dynamical system of the control problem. We assume the constraint as an arbitrary function of fractional derivatives and fractional integrals. By this assumption the restriction on constraint, to be of some prescribed function of fractional operators, is removed. Deduction of necessary optimality conditions followed by particular cases and examples has been provided. Additionally, we construct a solution scheme for the suggested class of (GFOCP)’s. The formulation of this scheme is done by implementing the Adomian decomposition …

On The Slow Growth And Approximation Of Entire Function Solutions Of Second-Order Elliptic Partial Differential Equations On Caratheodory Domains, Devendra Kumar Dec 2016

On The Slow Growth And Approximation Of Entire Function Solutions Of Second-Order Elliptic Partial Differential Equations On Caratheodory Domains, Devendra Kumar

Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)

In this paper we consider the regular, real-valued solutions of the second-order elliptic partial differential equation. The characterization of generalized growth parameters for entire function solutions for slow growth in terms of approximation errors on more generalized domains, i.e., Caratheodory domains, has been obtained. Moreover, we studied some inequalities concerning the growth parameters of entire function solutions of above equation for slow growth which have not been studied so far.

Concrete Reality: The Posthuman Landscapes Of J.G. Ballard, Mark Hausmann Dec 2016

Concrete Reality: The Posthuman Landscapes Of J.G. Ballard, Mark Hausmann

English (MA) Theses

While the fiction of J.G. Ballard has been primarily explored through postmodern criticism, his narratives and settings predict major issues concerning the contemporary discourse of posthumanism. His texts explore the escalating economic, social, and ecological crises converging within the material conditions of human urbanization and late capitalism. Nearly all of Ballard’s novels are as much about locations undergoing a crisis as they are about individuals or communities coming to embrace some extended period of human hysteria. His characters in The Drought, Concrete Island, and Super- Cannes, each progress through ecologically and socially alienating surroundings which invigorate them to act against …

Validation Of Evidence-Based Fall Prevention Programs For Adults With Intellectual And/Or Developmental Disorders: A Modified Otago Exercise Program, Mindy Oxman Renfro, Donna B. Bainbridge, Matthew Lee Smith

Health and Wellness

Introduction: Evidence-based fall prevention (EBFP) programs significantly decrease fall risk, falls, and fall-related injuries in community-dwelling older adults. To date, EBFP programs are only validated for use among people with normal cognition and, therefore, are not evidence-based for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disorders (IDD) such as Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias, cerebral vascular accident, or traumatic brain injury.

Background: Adults with IDD experience not only a higher rate of falls than their community-dwelling, cognitively intact peers but also higher rates and earlier onset of chronic diseases, also known to increase fall risk. Adults with IDD experience many barriers to …
