Impacts Of Effluent And Stormwater Runoff Sources On Metal Lability And Bioavailability In Developed Streams, Hongwei Luan
Impacts Of Effluent And Stormwater Runoff Sources On Metal Lability And Bioavailability In Developed Streams, Hongwei Luan
Doctoral Dissertations
Urban streams receive Cu from both treated wastewater and stormwater runoff sources. Both sources have significant quantities of organic matter (OM), which is known to control Cu speciation and bioavailability. Individual and mixed water samples from wastewater treatment plant effluents, stormwater runoff, and streams from developed areas were characterized with respect to OM concentration and spectral properties and metal concentration and size distribution. In addition, asymmetric flow-field flow fractionation coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to measure concentration, size distribution and association of metals in the colloidal size range. Results reveal that Fe, Cu, Zn and Pb …

Does The Control Of The Board Of The Bank Encourage Its Stability? The Survey Of Corporate Governance Practices In Europe In The Years 2003–2014, Renata Karkowska
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Due to the importance of the function that banks fulfil in the economy, the attention paid to the application of the principles of corporate governance appears to be strongly justified. The mission of social utility requires banks to maintain stability, liquidity and solvency of the entire sector. However, the examples of fraud that took place during the recent financial crisis could propel the reflection and raise many questions about the effectiveness of the control of risk managers in the banking sector. The aim of the study is to verify the impact of changes in the rules of corporate governance, in …

Problem Of Branches Of Legal Norms On The Example Of Theoretical Criteria Distinguishing Administrative Law, Michał Możdżeń-Marcinkowski
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
The study contains a critical analysis of contemporary issues of branches of legal norms. In this article we can find clearly critical opinions concerning recent attempts in the Polish literature on the science of law to distinguish criteria of administrative law and thus its ontology. The article indicates, on the theoretical and practical basis, the need for future disputes about the validity of the abovementioned concepts and public procedures following them. The author of the article emphasizes that all these theoretical problems should be analyzed, in the first place, in the light of the functional value of the law such …

Gun control is not a new concept; however, due to the growing amount of supporting non profits and recent mass shootings, gun control is becoming a common topic both amongst researchers and the general public. Currently, gun control is a state issue and thus should be studied on a state by state basis. This study examines state gun control policies and firearm mortality rates to determine if there is a correlation between gun control policies and the firearm mortality rate. The years covered by this study were 2000-2014 and nine states were sampled. Two out of the nine states were …

“Keeping Down The Underground:” The Underrated Value Of Indie Music Scenes As Economic Development Tools For Small American Cities, Meghan Mckinney
Honors Theses
Indie music holds the largest share of the global music market and is a multibillion-dollar industry. On a more local scale, indie music can contribute significant revenue to small American cities through locally owned independent record stores, live venues, and festivals. Each of these elements, with the addition of the people involved in indie music in a variety of capacities, interacts within a centralized location known as an indie music scene. Collectively, these scenes can generate massive amounts of revenue through music sales, ticket sales, tourism, and various other business offerings. To the small cities in which these scenes operate, …

Suffering Sappho! Female Friendships In Superhero Comics, 1940s To 1960s And Today, Hannah R. Costelle
Honors Theses
Comic book superheroines are the goddesses of modern times; they are the ideal beautiful, powerful women of America’s collective imagination whom girls have looked up to and emulated for decades. But these iconic examples of womanhood usually lack one of the key elements of humanity that enrich real women’s lives, an element that has been proven to increase women’s autonomy and confidence: female friendships. Wonder Woman may have led armies of female friends in the 1940s when superheroines first appeared in the comics pages, but by the 1950s and ‘60s, female characters confiding in one another and working together in …

Application Of Neural Networks For Intelligent Video Game Character Artificial Intelligences, Simon D. Mikulcik
Honors Theses
Much of today’s gaming culture pushes for increased realism and believability. While these movements have led to much more realistic graphics, we also need to keep in mind the behavior of artificial intelligence characters also in the game. Neural Networks are complicated data structures that have shown potential to learn and interpret complex behavior. This research analyzes the application of neural network as primary controllers for video game characters’ artificial intelligence. The paper considers the existing artificial intelligence techniques, and the existing uses of neural networks. It then describes a project in which a video game was created to serve …

Health – risk factors and socio – economic conditions were also assessed to determine if they put KACP at a higher risk of the five most common causes of death in Kentucky. Estill County, a KACP, was also specifically examined for its mortality and health – risk factor rates. By examining the 2013 database provided by the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH) and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it was determined that …

Honors Theses
In today’s society, the word “Psychopath” gets thrown around very easily. But does society really know what it means to truly be a clinically diagnosed Psychopath? This thesis is all about uncovering the truth about what Psychopathy looks like, how Psychopathy is handled in the courtroom, and why people should not despise, but have empathy for Psychopaths. This was accomplished by writing a thrilling short story about a young clinical psychologist by the name of Dr. T Campbell who is assigned to interview a very charismatic man named Peter Vetrov for the court. Peter has been deemed guilty of 3 …

Implementation Of An Object-Oriented Life Cycle Assessment Framework Using Functional Analysis And Systems Engineering Principles, Shantanu Avinash Gadre
Theses
There has been a growing awareness about the environmental impacts of producing and consuming goods and services. Among the various tools that have been developed to better understand these impacts, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is one of the most commonly used tools to estimate the environmental effects of products and services. Given that a significant percentage of a product’s impacts are defined during the design and development, it is necessary to effectively integrate LCA into these early phases of the product lifecycle. However, the lack of standardized practices, complex modelling approaches, data and time requirements, special training requirements for designers, …

The Effect(S) Of Media On The National Football League, Christian J. Bunce
Theses
Exemplification theory states that the sample is applied to the whole. This paper specifically look into how the media’s coverage of certain high-profile National Football League (NFL) cases may have created a negative perception about the NFL. Specifically, this paper will compare exemplars and the effects they have. The media play a large role in how players, leagues, and teams are perceived. However, our results do not support this idea. Both groups were asked the same questions, the questions were designed to gauge subject’s opinions of the NFL. After analysis, there was not a significant statistical difference in the responses …

Religion is the denial of our instincts, the denial of our potential, and the inability to accept our cosmic solitude. I present the term Earthling as a totalitarian truth and religious surrogate that eliminates subdivisions and categorizations of all living things (race, gender, belief, sexuality, political view, age, species, etc.).
