Color-Mediated Foraging By Pollinators: A Comparative Study Of Two Passionflower Butterflies At Lantana Camara, Gyanpriya Maharaj Dec 2016

Color-Mediated Foraging By Pollinators: A Comparative Study Of Two Passionflower Butterflies At Lantana Camara, Gyanpriya Maharaj

Dissertations

Colorful floral signaling and resulting insect foraging behaviors have only been extensively examined in hymenopteran pollinators, especially bees, in comparison to flies, beetles, and butterflies regardless of their ecological importance. Therefore, my study provides novel information by focusing on foraging behaviors of adult passionflower butterflies, Heliconius melpomene and Dryas iulia, to the color changing flowers of Lantana camara. My dissertation which is divided into four chapters, aims to explore various aspects of color mediate foraging in passionflower butterflies by combining observations in the wild with controlled field and laboratory experiments. In the first chapter I reviewed flower color development and …

Does The Sport Industry Change The Game For Job Satisfaction?: A Case Of Triple-A Ticket Office Employees, Kaylah R. Quilty

Sport Management Undergraduate

Business success continues to be influenced by employee job satisfaction because satisfied employees are more likely to produce quality work, stay motivated, and continue with the organization for a longer period of time. The research into job satisfaction has only gone as far as the business industry but has not yet reached the sport industry. Using the sport of baseball, interviews with ten Triple-A, International League ticket office employees uncovered there are many commonalities between the sport and business industries in terms of factors that influence job satisfaction. Therefore, sport organizations can likely utilize existing research in this area to …

Transition Towards A Green Economy In Europe: Innovation And Knowledge Integration In The Renewable Energy Sector, Chiara Conti, Maria Luisa Mancusi, Francesca Sanna-Randaccio, Roberta Sestini, Elena Verdolini

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

A major concern regarding innovation in clean technologies in the EU is that the fragmentation of its innovation system may hinder knowledge flows and, consequently, spillovers across member countries. A low intensity of knowledge flows across EU states can negatively impact their technological base, suppressing opportunities for further innovations and hindering the movement towards the technological frontier. This paper evaluates the fragmentation of the EU innovation system in the field of renewable energy sources (RES) by examining the intensity and direction of knowledge spillovers over the years 1985-2010. We modify the original double exponential knowledge diffusion model to provide information …

Junior Farmer Field Schools, Agricultural Knowledge And Spillover Effects: Quasi-Experimental Evidence From Northern Uganda, Jacopo Bonan, Laura Pagani

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We analyse the impact of a junior farmer field school project in Northern Uganda on students’ agricultural knowledge and practices. We also test for the presence of intergenerational learning spillover within households. We use differences-in-differences estimators with ex-ante matching. We find that the program had positive effects on students’ agricultural knowledge and adoption of good practices and that it produced some spillover effects in terms of improvements of household agricultural knowledge and food security. Overall, our results point to the importance of adapting the basic principles of farmer field schools to children.

Economic Impacts Of El Niño Southern Oscillation: Evidence From The Colombian Coffee Market, Andrea Bastianin, Alessandro Lanza, Matteo Manera Dec 2016

Economic Impacts Of El Niño Southern Oscillation: Evidence From The Colombian Coffee Market, Andrea Bastianin, Alessandro Lanza, Matteo Manera

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We develop a structural econometric model to study the impacts of El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on Colombian coffee production, exports and price. Our empirical specification is consistent with an economic model of the coffee market that, in the short-run, is characterized by a downward-sloping demand curve and by a vertical supply curve. This allows the study of the effects of unpredictable innovations to ENSO on the Colombian coffee price, while controlling for shocks arising from both the supply and the demand-side of the market. We show that El Niño events (i.e. positive shocks to ENSO) might be beneficial for …

Can Hypothetical Time Discounting Rates Predict Actual Behaviour: Evidence From A Randomized Experiment, Jacopo Bonan, Philippe Lemay-Boucher, Douglas Scott Dec 2016

Can Hypothetical Time Discounting Rates Predict Actual Behaviour: Evidence From A Randomized Experiment, Jacopo Bonan, Philippe Lemay-Boucher, Douglas Scott

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper estimates time preference parameters using commonly-applied methodologies, with the aim of investigating the link between these measures and actual economic behaviour. An experiment was conducted in the city of Thies, in Senegal, using the unique reference numbers of banknotes as a means of determining an individual’s willingness to save money. The findings of this experiment provide an innovative comparison between real choices, and choices made in the presence of hypothetical rewards. Our research indicates that individuals display a far greater degree of patience, when the possibility of genuine financial gain is made available to them. Our results show …

Decarbonization Pathways In Southeast Asia: New Results For Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand And Viet Nam, Francesco Bosello, Carlo Orecchia, David A. Raitzer Dec 2016

Decarbonization Pathways In Southeast Asia: New Results For Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand And Viet Nam, Francesco Bosello, Carlo Orecchia, David A. Raitzer

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Southeast Asia is one of the most vulnerable regions of the world to the impacts of climate change. At the same time, the region is also following a trajectory that could make it a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the future. Understanding the economic implications of policy options for low carbon growth is essential to formulate instruments that achieve the greatest emissions reductions at lowest cost. This study focuses on five developing countries of Southeast Asia that collectively account for 90% of regional emissions in recent years—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Viet Nam. The analyses are based …

Regulation Of Recreational Marijuana In Small Cities And Counties In Colorado, Katherine Nesse, Colin Victory Dec 2016

Regulation Of Recreational Marijuana In Small Cities And Counties In Colorado, Katherine Nesse, Colin Victory

SPU Works

In November 2016 the number of states where recreational marijuana sales are legal increased to eight. Thousands of cities and counties are now on the front lines of regulating these new land uses. Local governments in Colorado, the first state to implement recreational marijuana legalization, are models for jurisdictions in other states. We study counties and municipalities in the eight micropolitan statistical areas in Colorado to learn how they regulate recreational marijuana businesses. We reviewed codes, ordinances, and other documents of 43 local governments and interviewed planners in a third of these jurisdictions. These places were purposefully selected and reflect …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Silicon nitride fabricated by low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD) to be silicon-rich (SiNx), is a ubiquitous insulating thin film in the microelectronics industry, and an exceptional structural material for nanofabrication. Free-standingcompelling, particularly when used to deliver forefront molecular sensing capabilities in nanofluidic devices. We developed an accessible, gentle, and solution-based photo-directed surface metallization approach well-suited to forming patterned metal films as integral structural and functional features in thin-membrane-based SiNx devices—for use as electrodes or surface chemical functionalization platforms, for example—augmenting existing device capabilities and properties for a wide range of applications.

Implementation Of Sleep Assessment Questionnaire In College Health And Counseling Visits: A Quality Improvement Pilot, Sarah Ruth Jackson Dec 2016

Implementation Of Sleep Assessment Questionnaire In College Health And Counseling Visits: A Quality Improvement Pilot, Sarah Ruth Jackson

Dissertations

Sleep deprivation or sub-optimal sleep hygiene in college students has profound implications. Decreased cognitive performance, increased depression or mood concerns, higher rates of usage of alcohol or marijuana to compensate for poor sleep are all interconnected. The American College Health Survey (2011) results indicated that students do not receive support or education on the importance of sleep habits from their schools or medical providers. This DNP project explored two areas of interest. The first was a change in patient interview protocol as a quality improvement project in UMSL University Health, Wellness, Counseling & Disability Access Services (UHWC&DAS). The second area …

Sexual Orientation Microaggressions In High Schools, Marti Lee Baricevic Dec 2016

Sexual Orientation Microaggressions In High Schools, Marti Lee Baricevic

Dissertations

Sexual orientation-based discrimination in schools has evolved from primarily blatant, overt forms to include subtler and ambiguous forms. Recent research has found that same-gender-attracted youth are more resilient in managing school-based discrimination than previously reported. Within the framework of Symbolic Interactionism, this dissertation used a basic qualitative approach, influenced by Grounded Theory methods, to investigate sexual orientation microaggressions in high schools, strategies employed by same-gender-attracted students in managing sexual orientation microaggressions, and the relationship between microaggressive experiences and sexual identity. Fourteen adolescents, ranging from ages 16 to 19, from seven separate schools, who self-identified as lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer, …
