Hydrogeochemical Modeling Of Emerging Micro-Pollutants From Drinking Water Systems In South Africa, Elijah Wanda, Titus Msagati, Bhekie Mamba, Edward Nxumalo, Sabelo Mhlanga
Open Water Journal
Although emerging micro-pollutants are ubiquitous in drinking water systems, they remain unregulated and unknown in terms of occurrence and distribution in time and space. The problem is compounded by their persistency, very small size and/or polarity which make it difficult for them to be removed by conventional treatment methods. This study was aimed at characterising emerging micro-pollutants (i.e. Bisphenol A (BPA), technical 4-nonylphenol (NP), caffeine (CAF), galaxolide(HHCB), tonalide (AHTN) and carbamazepine (CBZ)), modeling their occurrence and distribution, and synthesising N-CNTs/PES nanocomposite membranes for effective removal of emerging micropollutants in water systems in Mpumalanga, and Northwest provinces in South Africa. Despite its wide use, the Soil Conservation Service runoff Curve Number (SCS-CN) equation is not trusted by many hydrologists due to its fitness gap to different areas. In the process of finding a simple method for estimating runoff contributing area within a watershed and assessing the runoff mechanisms, we have used the original concept of SCS-CN approach in a 113.4ha Anjeni Watershed in the headwaters of the Blue Nile Basin, Northern Ethiopian highland. Analysis was done at event, daily and weekly base on 10 years of hydrological data (1988-97) by classifying the rainfall seasons in to six based on the …

Effects Of Increased Land Use Changes On Runoff And Sediment Yield In The Upper River Nzoia Catchment, Maloba Joseck Joab
Open Water Journal
Managing a watershed is vital to the protection of drinking water, recreational opportunities, and river ecosystem health. However, the effect of land use changes and management practices on rivers is often difficult and unmeasured. With increased anthropogenic activities, land cover has continuously altered. The above scenario has resulted to increased quantity of physical parameters in river water among them, suspended sediments, higher turbidity, colour among others especially during rainy season. This study looks at the current state of the upper river Nzoia catchment in Kenya in terms of sediments and run runoff, compares with past cases, simulates future scenarios and …

The Aba’ala spate irrigation systems, traditional and modern, have experienced different set of floodwater and sediment management problems. Despite the dire need of alternative spate irrigation system layout, operational strategy and locally maintainable structures, efforts made to manage floodwater and control sedimentation had been structural. Hence, the study was conducted to evaluate the existing flood and sediment management practices and identify alternative options for optimum management of floods and sediments in Aba’ala plain. Primary data including discharge, sediments and river cross-sections were collected through direct field measurement. Interviews and focal group discussions were also employed to understand the operational and …

Several countries have recently completed national inventories of water points to generate comprehensive statistics on access to water and to support better resource allocation, long-term planning, and improve maintenance at the local level. However, most of these efforts have resulted in static databases that tend to be housed in proprietary systems and formats that are not comparable between countries or regions. Furthermore, the updating of water points is difficult, both due to the lack of technologies that facilitate collaboration and the lack of resources for monitoring and software maintenance. In this presentation, we describe a free and open-access water point …

Springs are the places where ground water is discharged at specific locations. They vary dramatically as to the type of water they discharge. Hot springs are having the temperature of the water lies significantly above the mean of annual air temperature of that region. Temperature is one of the most important factors that govern species abundance and distribution. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between biological parameters (macroinvertebrate diversity) with physicochemical water and habitat quality of hot springs in Easter Amhara Region. A cross-sectional study of physical, chemical and biological components of the hot springs were …

This study evaluates the impact of land use/cover change and climate variability on water balance in Usangu catchment in the southern highland of Tanzania. Usangu catchment is approximately 20,000 km2 in area and is the source of about 30% of all the rice produced in Tanzania. It is a part of Rufiji basin and falls within the Southern Agriculture Corridor of Tanzania (SAGCOT) where agriculture intensification programs are planned for the near future. The area is already water stressed. This research uses SWAT model to study the impact of climate variability and land use/cover changes on the water balance …

The current severity of gully erosion is a major cause of increased sediment loads in rivers, but gully rehabilitation has proven to be challenging, with limited success. This paper describes gully rehabilitation efforts in the Ene-Chilala in the Blue Nile basin begun in early 2013, where low-cost gully rehabilitation has been effective with community participation. Initially farmers were reluctant to participate for religious reasons but with the aid of local priests and respected elders, community discussions and a visit to a rehabilitated gully, a consensus was reached to rehabilitate a 0.71-ha upland gully. The gully cut the foot path of …

The DSS is considered to comprise (i) a knowledge base, and (ii) modeling tools. These two elements are to have in-built internal interfaces, and the DSS as a whole, through input and output systems, is to have strong linkages with the separately developed BIS and WIS and The Authority is carrying out a study using the Nile Basin Decision Support System (NB-DSS) to providing the inputs needed for a water resources management and development plan for the Tana Sub-Basin.
