The Mars Desert Research Station (MDRS) is a research program which is owned and operated by the Mars Society. The MDRS is located in Hanksville, Utah which hosts simulations that are typically two weeks long for professional scientists and engineers as well as college students of all levels, in training for human operations specifically on Mars. This space analog facility is in isolation, allowing for rigorous field studies regarding research that represents a true mission as if the crew members are conducting a real expedition on Mars. In collaboration with Embry-Riddle Future Space Explorers and Developers Society (ERFSEDS), we came up with the idea to build a quad-copter/sensor system that could be deployed from a rocket. The goal is to build a new chassis for the quad-copters electronic components that will allow the quad-copters arms to fold inwards to meet the required space constraints of a rocket. In addition to the critical components of the quad-copter, our design will integrate a number of other data collecting sub-systems currently being used in a weather balloon designed by Society 4 S.P.A.C.E. club members. The Embry-Riddle EcoCAR 3 team is developing a prototype hybrid Chevrolet Camaro utilizing a customized vehicle powertrain controller. This controller is serving to ensure system safety, vehicle operation, and consumer drivability while also incorporating advanced driving aids to achieve both the desired performance levels one expects from a Camaro as well as vehicle efficiency. This vehicle must reach the team set vehicle technical specifications of a 4.9 second 0 to 60 time while maintaining a 53 miles per gallon gasoline equivalence rating.

The Deepwater Horizon (DWH) blowout of 2010 exposed many coastal and marine ecosystems in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) to the acute and chronic effects of crude oil. To date, no studies have investigated the toxicity of DWH oil on shallow reef-building corals despite the relative proximity of some reef sites to the DWH (Flower Garden Banks, TX) and the potential for downstream oil transport to other more distant sites (Pulley Ridge and Florida Keys, FL). Rice husks (RHs) have recently attracted high attention due to their potential for many applications, including construction materials, composite materials, adsorption materials, chemical production, and power generation. RHs are an appealing alternative because of their low cost and high silica content. So far, most researchers mainly focus on the utilization of one component (such as silica) while ignoring others. Comprehensive utilization of RH biomass and diversified products are the key goals for this research field.

In the field of sport management, internships have been shown to be an important factor in the initial placement in the sport industry. Previous work has cited both design elements and the experience itself as being critical to internship success or failure. As the SJFC program requires two distinct required experiences, the purpose of this study was to explore the impact of these experiences on recent graduate’s confidence levels. Through survey data it was uncovered that participants who indicated a higher satisfaction with their final internship were more likely to end up in a career similar that of their last …

A leveraged buyout is the acquisition of a company funded primarily through debt, typically 60% to 70% of the price, while a financial sponsor provides the remaining amount of funding. A public company is acquired, then made private, and finally sold after a period of time for a profit. During the time that the company is held private, cash flows of the firm are used to repay the debt taken on to acquire it and actions are taken to improve the business and performance of the firm (Rosenbaum 161-162).

In group sequential designs, adjusting for baseline variables and short-term outcomes can lead to increased power and reduced sample size. We derive formulas for the precision gain from such variable adjustment using semiparametric estimators for the average treatment effect, and give new results on what conditions lead to substantial power gains and sample size reductions. The formulas reveal how the impact of prognostic variables on the precision gain is modified by the number of pipeline participants, analysis timing, enrollment rate, and treatment effect heterogeneity, when the semiparametric estimator uses correctly specified models. The Androscoggin Valley Soil and Water Conservation District (AVSWCD) expressed a need for the research and development of a semi-quantitative metric that can be used to determine priority stream barriers (eg. culverts; dams) to remove in Androscoggin and Sagadahoc Counties in Maine. In conjunction with a representative from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, Alex Abbott, the AVSWCD provided data about various stream sites within these two counties that had been recently surveyed. This included information about the aquatic ecological features of various stream habitats containing barriers and information about the physical characteristics of the barriers themselves.

This paper aims to outline the most profitable means of installing a large scale photovoltaic solar electricity array for use by the energy and sustainability departments of Bates College and ultimately for the benefit of college as a whole. In recognizing the college’s goal of global stewardship, we believe that decreasing emissions should be a top priority. Photovoltaic solar panels have the ability to transform sunlight into readily available electricity that can be utilized by the college, resulting in the potential for both decreased demand from the grid and decreased carbon emissions from the burning of fossil fuels. This report provides an analysis of the current water use at Whiting Farm in Auburn, ME, and provides suggestions for implementing systems that will reduce water use, make Whiting Farm independent in water acquisition, and provide ways to try to ensure water security going into the future. Currently, Whiting Farm suffers from unreliable and unsustainable water use exacerbated by the drought that occurred in the past few months.
