"How It's Done": The Role Of Mentoring And Advice In Preparing The Next Generation Of Historically Black College And University Presidents, Felicia Commodore, Sydney Freeman Jr., Marybeth Gasman, Courtney M. Carter

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

The college and university presidency is one of the most coveted positions in academe. Due to the projected retirements of current Historically Black College and University (HBCU) presidents, the researchers interviewed 21 current presidents, institutional board members, and presidential search firm personnel to explore what current HBCU leadership identifies as important mentoring/mentee practices, mentoring/mentee opportunities, and professional advice for HBCU presidential aspirants to consider. The findings, based on the coding and analysis of semi-structured qualitative interviews, revealed that self-awareness, focusing on the essential aspects of the job and not merely the perks, openness to being mentored and willingness to shadow …

Gaining S-T-E-A-M: A General Athletic Department Social Media Strategy, Brendan O'Hallarn, Craig A. Morehead, Shana L. Pribesh

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

In the 10 years since the invention of Facebook, social media sites have become an indispensable part of the marketing and communications strategy employed by a broad spectrum of organizations, including university athletic departments. While social media is almost universally used, a review of academic literature suggests the study of deployment of social media resources, and analysis of their effectiveness, is still very much in preliminary stages. Professional literature on social media use is out in front of peer-reviewed research. Therefore, we use Funk’s framework for social media practices as a point of departure, offering a social media strategy specifically …

Perspectives Of Male American Indian Students In A Predominantly White Higher Education Institution, Patricia Ann Queen Jordheim Jan 2016

Perspectives Of Male American Indian Students In A Predominantly White Higher Education Institution, Patricia Ann Queen Jordheim

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the perceptions of male American Indian students and their strategies for staying enrolled in school and to determine what issues they were facing while attending a predominantly-White institution (PWI) of higher education in the Northern Plains. Participants consisted of seven male American Indian students attending school during the 2014-2015 academic school year. Resistance theory provided a framework for this research on male American Indian students and their perceptions of cultural dominance and their responses concerning assimilation and the campus cultural climate. The Hypothesis of Transculturation is a bridge to how male …

Creation Of A Conditional Reasoning Task For Hostile Sexism, Travis Daryl Clark Jan 2016

Creation Of A Conditional Reasoning Task For Hostile Sexism, Travis Daryl Clark

Theses and Dissertations

The Ambivalent Sexism Inventory (ASI) is a widely used measure of sexism. The current project describes the creation and administration of an alternative measurement of sexism that utilizes a conditional reasoning task (CRT) while supporting the theoretical underpinnings in Ambivalent Sexism Theory. Arguments in favor of creating a new scale are presented along with arguments for the specific use of a CRT. By creating a conditional reasoning task for hostile sexism (CRT-HS), the current project takes the first step toward creating a new indirect alternative for measuring sexism.

A Hydrometeorological And Geospatial Analysis Of Precipitation Within The Glacial Ridge Wildlife Refuge Using The R2ain-Gis Tool, William John Mokry Jan 2016

A Hydrometeorological And Geospatial Analysis Of Precipitation Within The Glacial Ridge Wildlife Refuge Using The R2ain-Gis Tool, William John Mokry

Theses and Dissertations

Weather radar (radio detection and ranging) is a specialized meteorological tool used to sample and track meteorological objects. This tool is critical for meteorologists and public decision-makers to inform and provide for their constituents in a timely manner, often with the protection of lives and property on the line. With the application of using meteorological and geospatial data in the realm of geographic information systems (G.I.S.), the task of blending the two sciences to inhibit further research and dissemination of information occurs.

This study focuses on the creation and implementation of a new geospatial tool, the Radar and Rainfall Analyzed …

Operating Profitability, Investment And Finding Alpha In Diverse Economic Conditions, Eric Parks Jan 2016

Operating Profitability, Investment And Finding Alpha In Diverse Economic Conditions, Eric Parks

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how a firm’s level of operating profitability and investment impact expected stock returns in diverse economic environments. Using time-series regressions in conjunction with dummy variables to represent different economic environments, the analysis measures the impact of specified market conditions on expected stock returns. The results confirm findings from existing literature that stock returns from profitable firms with lower levels of investment outperform those from less profitable firms with higher levels of investment. In an economic environment analysis, this thesis finds investment behaves as a traditional risk factor, but profitability can provide an investor a valuable hedge during …

From Apology To Utopia's Point Of Attack, Justin Deystone Jan 2016

From Apology To Utopia's Point Of Attack, Justin Deystone

Publications

This contribution to the Symposium celebrating the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of Martti Koskenniemi's From Apology to Utopia explores the relevance of the book for contemporary theorists of the international world. In doing so, the article puts Koskenniemi's classic in a contest with John Yoo's recent book, Point of Attack. The purpose in doing so is three-fold. First, it is to illustrate the contemporary use of Koskenniemi's structuralist method. Second, it is to show how the use of the method, with its attendant reliance on modes of legal thought, might give pause to international thinkers seeking to reinvigorate particular structures of …

In The Shadows Of Sunlight: The Effects Of Transparency On State Political Campaigns, Abby K. Wood, Douglas M. Spencer Jan 2016

In The Shadows Of Sunlight: The Effects Of Transparency On State Political Campaigns, Abby K. Wood, Douglas M. Spencer

Publications

In recent years, the courts have invalidated a variety of campaign finance laws while simultaneously upholding disclosure requirements. Courts view disclosure as a less-restrictive means to root out corruption while critics claim that disclosure chills speech and deters political participation. Using individual-level contribution data from state elections between 2000 and 2008, we find that the speech-chilling effects of disclosure are negligible. On average, less than one donor per candidate is likely to stop contributing when the public visibility of campaign contributions increases. Moreover, we do not observe heterogeneous effects for small donors or ideological outliers despite an assumption in First …

Defining A Medium: The Educational Aspirations For Early Radio, Amanda R. Keeler Jan 2016

Defining A Medium: The Educational Aspirations For Early Radio, Amanda R. Keeler

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This essay examines the attempts by many writers to steer the burgeoning U.S. radio industry towards educational uses and programming in the 1920s. At the same time that commercial radio began to take shape, several competing and seemingly incompatible visions of the airwaves emerged—one of which privileged the use of radio for educational purposes. Using discourse from trade journals, general interest magazines, and newspapers, this article explores the calls for educational programming amid the rapidly expanding and consolidating commercial radio industry.

Travel Distances By Wisconsin Medicaid Enrollees Who Visit Emergency Departments For Dental Care, Christopher Okunseri, Rabeea Vanevenhoven, Thomas Chelius, Kirsten M.M. Beyer, Elaye Okunseri, William K. Lobb, Aniko Szabo

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objectives: Prior studies document increased numbers of nontraumatic dental condition (NTDC) visits to U.S. emergency departments (EDs). However, the influence of travel distance on ED use for NTDCs, particularly for Medicaid enrollees has hitherto received little attention. The authors examined the effect of travel distance on Wisconsin Medicaid enrollees’ NTDC visits to EDs after adjustment for covariates.

Methods: NTDC-related visits claims data for Wisconsin Medicaid (2001-2009) was analyzed. For each enrollee, travel distance to the nearest of 130 EDs in Wisconsin was determined. The number of NTDC visits per person-year was aggregated by ZIP+4 of residence. Negative binomial regression adjusting …

Association Of Urinary Phthalates With Self-Reported Eye Affliction/Retinopathy In Individuals With Diabetes: National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, 2001-2010, Manju Mamtani, Joanne E. Curran, John Blangero, Hemant Kulkarni

School of Medicine Publications

Background. An epidemiological association between exposure to phthalates and type 2 diabetes (T2D) is known. However, the potential role of environmental phthalates in the complications of T2D is unknown. Methods. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2010, we studied the association of 12 urinary phthalate metabolites with self-reported eye affliction/retinopathy in 1,004 participants with diabetes. Data from retinal imaging was used to validate this outcome. Independence of the phthalates→T2D association was studied by adjusting for age, sex, race, marital status, educational attainment, poverty income ratio, physical activity, glycated hemoglobin levels, total serum cholesterol, serum high-density …

The Influence Of Guilt Cognitions On Taxpayers’ Voluntary Disclosures, Jonathan Farrar, Cass Hausserman, Paul Dunn Jan 2016

The Influence Of Guilt Cognitions On Taxpayers’ Voluntary Disclosures, Jonathan Farrar, Cass Hausserman, Paul Dunn

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Guilt is a powerful emotion that is known to influence ethical decision-making. Nevertheless, the role of guilt cognitions in influencing restorative behaviour following an unethical action is not well understood. Guilt cognitions are interrelated beliefs about an individual’s role in a negative event. We experimentally investigate the joint impact of three guilt cognitions – responsibility for a decision, justification for a decision, and foreseeability of consequences – on a taxpayer’s decision to make a tax amnesty disclosure. Tax amnesties encourage delinquent taxpayers to self-correct to avoid severe penalties that would result if their tax evasion were discovered. Our findings suggest …

Antecedents And Consequences Of Procedural Fairness Perceptions In Personnel Selection: A Three-Year Longitudinal Study, Udo Konradt, Yvonne Garbers, Martina Böge, Berrin Erdogan, Talya N. Bauer

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

Drawing on Gilliland’s (1993) selection fairness framework, we examined antecedents and behavioral effects of applicant procedural fairness perceptions before, during, and after a personnel selection procedure using a six-wave longitudinal research design. Results showed that both perceived post-test fairness and pre-feedback fairness perceptions are related to job offer acceptance and job performance after 18 months, but not to job performance after 36 months. Pre-test and post-test procedural fairness perceptions were mainly related to formal characteristics and interpersonal treatment, whereas pre-feedback fairness perceptions were related to formal characteristics and explanations. The impact of fairness attributes of formal characteristics and interpersonal treatment …

Graduate Student Peer Mentoring Programs: Benefitting Students, Faculty And Academic Programs, Beth Boehm, Amy J. Lueck

English

Peer mentoring—students mentoring other students—is an area of increasing interest for scholars and administrators of graduate education. The range of activities that constitute peer mentoring is vast, but includes providing insights into the departmental culture, guidance through major program milestones, psychosocial support, and friendship (Kram and Isabella 1985; Grant-Vallone and Ensher 2000). While most students are assigned a faculty advisor or mentor, the perspectives of peer mentors who may be only a year or two ahead of the mentee are valuable in different but powerful ways (Kram and Isabella 1985). While it is most common to talk about peer mentors …

Early Childhood Ipad Use And Effects On Visual Spatial Attention Span, Maya Espiritu Jan 2016

Early Childhood Ipad Use And Effects On Visual Spatial Attention Span, Maya Espiritu

Scripps Senior Theses

Despite the rising prevalence of mobile media in young children’s lives, little research exists that examines the effects of mobile media use on early childhood cognitive development. This study will explore how mobile media use, specifically iPad use, in early childhood affects development of visual spatial attention span. Researchers will recruit 160 participants, ages 3 to 6, and categorize them into three groups: TV viewers only, interactive iPad users, and passive iPad users. Children will complete a computer task to measure the length of their visual spatial attention span. Parents will report on the average daily amount of media use, …
