Forecasting For Control And Environmental Impacts Of Wave Energy Converters, Kieran Monk

This work is divided in to two distinct parts. In the first part a model is developed to assess the redistribution of wave energy about an offshore array of overtopping type wave energy converters. The model is based on a classical analytical solution for diffraction about a breakwater which is modified to consider an array of dissipating, reflecting and transmitting breakwater segments, which are used to approximate an overtopping type WEC array. The model is computationally efficient and phase resolving which allows the effect of wave scattering to be investigated for large domains with high resolution irregular wave distributions. It …

The Effects Of Selected Bio-Active Feed Additives On Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus) Production And Health, Ayodeji Adeoye

Three investigations were conducted to assess the effects of selected bio-active feed additives on tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) growth performance, feed utilisation, haemato-immunological status, intestinal morphology and microbiology. The first experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of feeding tilapia semi-practical diets supplemented with exogenous enzymes (phytase, protease or carbohydrase). After six weeks of the dietary supplementation, tilapia fed diets supplemented with exogenous enzymes (phytase and carbohydrase) showed enhanced growth performance and higher microvilli density when compared to the control group. Additionally, the intestinal bacterial community profile of tilapia fed the carbohydrase supplemented diet was significantly altered in contrast to those …

Humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) songs are a striking example of cultural transmission in non-humans (Garland et al., 2011). During the migration and mating season of this species, males produce complex, stereotyped sound sequences defined as ‘songs’(Payne & McVay, 1971). Within a population, males conform to a common yet slowly evolving song. Change can also occur more rapidly when a completely new song is adopted by the entire population in a relatively short time (termed ‘revolution’) (Noad, Cato, Bryden, Jenner, & Jenner, 2000). Members of the genus Rubus L., including the Brambles and Raspberries, are known as aggressive weeds and also as plants with beneficial traits. Several wild Bramble species have been improved or crossed to produce marketable varieties and some species are considered to be particularly valuable for their nutritional and medicinal properties. However, for the great majority of botanists they remain a taxonomic enigma. Traditionally batologists (Bramble specialists) have separated taxa mainly by morphological descriptions. Background

Excessive sun exposure and sunburn increase individuals’ risk of skin cancer. It is especially important to prevent sunburn in childhood due to the higher relative risk of skin cancer across the life span compared to risk associated with sunburn episodes experienced later in life. This study examined demographic and attitudinal factors associated with engagement in a range of sun protection behaviours (wearing a hat, wearing protective clothing, staying in the shade, and staying indoors during the middle of the day) and the frequency of sunburn among Western Australian adolescents to provide insights of relevance for future sun protection campaigns. …

Meningiomas are known to be more common in females than males. They are also known in rare cases to grow in size during pregnancy, which can complicate its management. We describe a 31-year-old Caucasian woman who presented with blurring of her vision and diplopia during the third trimester of her pregnancy. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a small left cavernous sinus meningioma. The patient was treated conservatively until her uncomplicated delivery. A postpartum MRI scan showed complete regression of the suspected meningioma. Currently the patient is contemplating a further pregnancy.

On average, more than 1,000 individuals will acquire a mosquito-borne disease in Western Australia (WA) each year. Knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in relation to mosquitoes and mosquito-borne disease have not yet been investigated within Australia. A randomized telephone survey of 2,500 households across 12 regions in WA was undertaken between February and May 2014. The aim of the survey was to obtain baseline KAP data surrounding mosquitoes and mosquito-borne diseases in different regions of WA, across a range of age groups and between males and females. A potential environmental impact associated with horizontal directional drilling is the inadvertent return of bentonite-based drilling fluid to the surface via naturally occurring fractures or fissures. This study investigated a range of flocculants consisting of water-soluble linear polyacrylamides (PAMs) differing in charge (anionic, neutral, and cationic), biopolymer (chitosan) and gypsum for treating the bentonite suspension that might release with runoff or into stream water. Laboratory jar test were conducted with a 0.4 % (w/v) bentonite suspension having an average initial turbidity of 1,217 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU). This body of research explores the dietary application of a bioactive, solid-state fermentation (SSF) product in contemporary and lupin-containing diets of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niltoticus) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Consequently, the work provides holistic assessment of the influences of SSF products on animal health and performance; depending upon rearing temperature, nutritional physiologies, feed formulations and extrusion conditions; alongside information on the performance of lupins in aquafeeds. The SSF product (at 0.1 % inclusion) improved growth performance of Nile tilapia fed diets containing lupins. Phosphorous retention appeared higher when the SSF product was included in a yellow lupin (Lupinus luteus) …

There is an increasing consumer demand for dairy products which are safe and free from additives. Microbial starter strains, in combination with other factors, were studied for their contribution to the control of unwanted microbes, and maintaining the quality of soft cheese. The technological and functional characteristics of the starter culture strains Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis and Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris, and probiotic bacterial strains Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis BB12, Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5 and Lactobacillus casei Shirota were investigated.
