Cast aluminum alloys are common in automotive and aerospace applications due to their high strength-to-density ratio. Fracture data for cast aluminum alloys, such as fatigue life, tensile strength and elongation, are heavily affected by the structural defects, such as pores and bifilms. There have been numerous studies in which either fatigue performance or tensile deformation were characterized and linked to casting defects. However, a comprehensive study that correlates tensile and fatigue properties has not been reported. The present study is motivated to fill this gap. The Continuing Battle Over Economically Targeted Investments: An Analysis Of The Department Of Labor's Interpretative Bulletin 2015-01, Edward A. Zelinsky

In Interpretive Bulletin 2015-01 (IB 2015-01), the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) renewed the now two-decades old battle over “economically targeted investments” (ETIs). As a matter of statutory interpretation, IB 2015-01, like its predecessors, is unpersuasive. The Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA) requires plan trustees to invest “solely” to provide participants’ retirement benefits. A trustee who invests in ETIs violates this statutory obligation by pursuing collateral economic benefits for persons other than plan participants. As a matter of policy, the social investing which ETIs exemplify is unsound. At best, such social investing in practice merely shuffles investment …

This study examined and compared the frequencies and functions of common lexical hedges used by non-native (Thai) and native writers in the discussion sections of medical research articles in the area of oncology. A corpus of sixty research articles written in English by both groups were selected and analyzed through descriptive statistics in terms of frequency and a standardized size of 1000 words was employed to provide a basis for comparison. This paper aims to investigate the factors which influence prosodic phrasing in Thai. The data comprise 107 utterances consist of simple, compound, and complex sentences. The complex sentences are structurally different among thîi or wâa verb-complement clause constructions, thîi noun-complement clause constructions, thîi or sɨ̂ŋ relative clause constructions, hâi or thamhâi causative constructions, and clauses preceded by sɨ̂ŋ or dooj discourse markers. To find prosodic constituent boundaries in each utterance, an online experimental test was conducted. 37 informants were asked to phrase the utterance by assigning a pause or pauses in certain positions in the utterances. In previous studies, there have been disagreements over the analyses on kaanthii- and khwaamthii- constructions which are analyzed as 5 different types of constructions. This article aims to examine these two constructions on two unsettled major issues. The first is whether kaan/khwaam and thii are two separated units as [kaan/khwaam][thii-], i.e., the head nouns kaan/khwaam modified by the thii- noun-modifying clause, or are counted as a single grammatical morpheme as [kaanthii-] and [khwaamthii-]. In the current study, I investigated whether changes occurred in the acceptance of evolution for students majoring in elementary education during their first semester of college and if so, what factors influenced the change. Thirty participants in their first semester of college completed pre-and post-tests that included the Inventory of Student Evolution Acceptance to measure changes in student acceptance of evolution over the course of one academic semester. Ten of those participants completed interviews to elaborate on those factors that may have affected their acceptance in evolution. Genuine dialogues reflect the way that language is initially developed by providing opportunities to hear and practice language. Participants within dialogues are found to speak in similar ways through the priming effect, giving language learners continued opportunities to hear and practice a greater variety of syntactic structures. The purpose of this study was to determine if genuine dialogue, and the priming that occurs, could aid in the use and expansion of syntactic structures.

The purpose of this study was to determine what differences exist between several kinematic variables between failed and successful attempts in the snatch lift. Six female Weightlifters at the 2015 American open were measured for kinematic variables via videotape during competition. The results show that differences existed in the angle of the shoulder at peak barbell height and the catch height, along with the amount of separation between the lifter and barbell at peak height. Significant differences were also found at the angle between the barbell and lifter center of mass. This study was a first step toward understanding the …

In 2004, Wright State University developed an innovative mathematics course for first-year engineering undergraduates in order to increase student retention, motivation and academic success. To date, the Wright State model has had a positive impact on student retention, motivation and academic success by increasing graduation rates and GPAs among participants. During the fall of 2014 and 2015, one large public university in the Midwest with more selective admission criteria decided to pilot a course based on the Wright State Model for Engineering Mathematics Education.
