The Role Of Amino Acids In The Nitrogen Cycle Of Peatlands, Tia Scarpelli Jan 2016

The Role Of Amino Acids In The Nitrogen Cycle Of Peatlands, Tia Scarpelli

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Future release of carbon from peatlands in response to climate change may be impacted by nitrogen limitation. The current study considers the role of amino acids as a nitrogen source in peatlands. The total free amino acid (TFAA) concentration for peats ranged from 0-2.3 µM, and leucine was the primary contributor. The dominance of sedge or ericaceous shrub plant types did not significantly impact the TFAA pool. Ammonium concentrations were much greater than TFAA and nitrate concentrations. TFAA concentrations were greatest in spring and least in fall. The springtime maxima and summer decrease in concentrations were simulated in a modeling …

East-West Cultural Differences In Visual Attention Tasks: Identifying Multiple Mechanisms And Developing A Predictive Model, Yin Yin Tan Jan 2016

East-West Cultural Differences In Visual Attention Tasks: Identifying Multiple Mechanisms And Developing A Predictive Model, Yin Yin Tan

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Past research has identified East-West differences in visual attention associated with holistic versus analytic perception and reasoning strategies (Nisbett et al., 2001; Boduroglu et al., 2009). These cross-cultural differences might stem from several different mechanisms, which may include: interference suppression, response inhibition, attention to detail vs. object configuration, stimulus centrality vs. eccentricity, number of visual distractors (e.g., display set size or clutter), and others.

Although research has shown East-West differences, the results sometimes appear inconsistent with each other, or they lack clear predictions from underlying theories. For example, evidence of a preference for cluttered displays (Wang et al., 2012), evidence …

A Machine Learning Classifier For Corporate Opportunity Waivers, Gabriel V. Rauterberg, Eric L. Talley Jan 2016

A Machine Learning Classifier For Corporate Opportunity Waivers, Gabriel V. Rauterberg, Eric L. Talley

Faculty Scholarship

Rauterberg & Talley (2017) develop a data set of “corporate opportunity waivers” (COWs) – significant contractual modifications of fiduciary duties – sampled from SEC filings. Part of their analysis utilizes a machine learning (ML) classifier to extend their data set beyond the hand-coded sample. Because the ML approach is likely unfamiliar to some readers, and in the light of its great potential across other areas of law and finance research, this note explains the basic components using a simple example, and it demonstrates strategies for calibrating and evaluating the classifier.

Incarcerated Mother, Invisible Child, Rebecca Covington Jan 2016

Incarcerated Mother, Invisible Child, Rebecca Covington

Emory International Law Review

The significant increase in the American prison population over the last three decades generated nationwide discussion about the need for criminal justice reform. This discussion has largely ignored the impact on the children of incarcerated individuals, especially incarcerated mothers. This Comment argues that the United States should make supporting incarcerated mothers and their children a primary focus in its criminal justice system. In doing so, the United States should look to international standards'in particular the Bangkok Rules and the Convention on the Rights of the Child'as well as the criminal justice reform to support incarcerated mothers and their children in …

Labeling Of Religious Non-Believers: The Effect Of The "Atheist" Title On Moral Judgments About Non-Theists, Brock C. Rozich Jan 2016

Labeling Of Religious Non-Believers: The Effect Of The "Atheist" Title On Moral Judgments About Non-Theists, Brock C. Rozich

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Prior research indicates that how concepts are described impacts our beliefs about the subject itself. For example, when the term “welfare” (instead of “help for the poor”) is used to ask people whether assistance should be increased in times of economic hardship, support is lower (Smith, 1987). My research question centers on whether or not this effect would carry over to the area of religion and the use of the terms “atheist” or “those with no religious beliefs.” Participants in the current studies were presented with a vignette about a student who was labeled as an atheist, as having no …

The Effects Of Control Threat On Women's Acceptance Of Benevolent Sexism And Traditional Gender Roles, Zheng Li Jan 2016

The Effects Of Control Threat On Women's Acceptance Of Benevolent Sexism And Traditional Gender Roles, Zheng Li

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

System Justification Theory (SJT; Jost & Banaji, 1994) predicts that people tend to accept and endorse the current socioeconomic and political arrangement when they feel threatened. Based on SJT, women should support traditional gender roles and benevolent sexism when they feel threatened because these system-justifying beliefs can mitigate anxiety and distress elicited by existential threats. In the current study, female participants’ responses to a control threat were measured by an author-generated scale on attitudes toward traditional gender roles for women and Benevolent Sexism Scale (Glick & Fiske, 1996). In a community sample (but not in a student sample), participants whose …
