Design Of A Solar Cooling System For Iraq Climate, Shahen Mohammed Fakhraldin
Design Of A Solar Cooling System For Iraq Climate, Shahen Mohammed Fakhraldin
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
With the objectives of designing a solar cooling system with cold storage unit for the Iraqi climate, solar energy resources were assessed and methods were proposed to enhance harvesting the solar energy in the Iraqi climate. Where the results showed that adopting monthly average optimal tilt angles led to an increase in the amount of useful solar energy gained nearly 9%. A methodology of multi objective optimisation of solar absorption cooling system was then developed and demonstrated by applying it in a domestic application in Baghdad. Maximising the system performance in exergy, economic and environment were the objectives of the …
A Retro-Projected Robotic Head For Social Human-Robot Interaction, Frédéric C. Delaunay
A Retro-Projected Robotic Head For Social Human-Robot Interaction, Frédéric C. Delaunay
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
As people respond strongly to faces and facial features, both consciously and subconsciously, faces are an essential aspect of social robots. Robotic faces and heads until recently belonged to one of the following categories: virtual, mechatronic or animatronic. As an original contribution to the field of human-robot interaction, I present the R-PAF technology (Retro-Projected Animated Faces): a novel robotic head displaying a real-time, computer-rendered face, retro-projected from within the head volume onto a mask, as well as its driving soft-ware designed with openness and portability to other hybrid robotic platforms in mind. The work constitutes the first implementation of a non-planar …
A Framework To Support Developers In The Integration And Application Of Linked And Open Data, Timm Heuss
A Framework To Support Developers In The Integration And Application Of Linked And Open Data, Timm Heuss
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
In the last years, the number of freely available Linked and Open Data datasets has multiplied into tens of thousands. The numbers of applications taking advantage of it, however, have not. Thus, large portions of potentially valuable data remain unexploited and are inaccessible for lay users. Therefore the upfront investment in releasing data in the first place is hard to justify. The lack of applications needs to be addressed in order not to undermine efforts put into Linked and Open Data. In existing research, strong indicators can be found that the dearth of applications is due to a lack of …
Evaluating The Impacts Of Integrating Fisheries And Conservation Management, Sarah Gall
Evaluating The Impacts Of Integrating Fisheries And Conservation Management, Sarah Gall
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
Historically, the governance streams of fisheries and conservation management have run separately to one another, with little attempt at integration despite their similar goals. Efforts to integrate the two have increased as a result of their similarities and the potential benefits that may arise, but a requirement for additional research was identified to determine the effectiveness of this approach. This thesis therefore took an interdisciplinary approach, seeking to combine knowledge and methods from ecological, social and economic disciplines to provide a holistic evaluation of the potential for success. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) were chosen as a management tool to evaluate …
Effects Of Marine Environment Exposure On The Static And Fatigue Mechanical Properties Of Carbon Fibre-Epoxy Composite, Maozhou Meng
Effects Of Marine Environment Exposure On The Static And Fatigue Mechanical Properties Of Carbon Fibre-Epoxy Composite, Maozhou Meng
Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses
This thesis studies the static and fatigue failure of carbon fibre-epoxy composite for marine use. The primary objective is to investigate the effects of sea water ingress on the static and cyclic performance of laminated composites, by using the combination of experimental, numerical and analytical approaches. Experiments were carried out to collect evidence, including data and images, for further analysis. Samples were made from autoclave-cured carbon fibre-epoxy pre-preg for the static, moisture diffusion and fatigue tests. Three chambers were used in the diffusion test, containing fresh water (tap water), sea water and sea water at 70 bar hydrostatic pressure respectively. …
Critical Firm-Based Enablers-Mediators-Outcomes (Cfemos): A New Integrated Model For Product Innovation Performance Drivers In The Context Of U.S. Restaurants, Mohamed Farouk Shehata Ali
Critical Firm-Based Enablers-Mediators-Outcomes (Cfemos): A New Integrated Model For Product Innovation Performance Drivers In The Context Of U.S. Restaurants, Mohamed Farouk Shehata Ali
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This study develops an original theoretical model of critical managerially controllable factors that have high potential for achieving significant improvements in the (intermediate and ultimate) outcome(s) of product innovation efforts. To this end, the author draws on the relevant empirical literature and integrates four complementary theoretical perspectives, namely; the critical success factors (CSFs) approach, the resource-based view (RBV), the input-process-output (IPO) model, and the system(s) approach. The model (hereafter CFEMOs) aims to explicate the simultaneous direct and indirect/mediated interrelationships among the product innovation’s critical firm-based enablers (new-product fit-to-firm’s skills and resources, internal cross-functional integration, and top-management support), process execution proficiency, …
Tommy Atkins, War Office Reform And The Social And Cultural Presence Of The Late-Victorian Army In Britain, C.1868-1899, Edward Peter Joshua Gosling
Tommy Atkins, War Office Reform And The Social And Cultural Presence Of The Late-Victorian Army In Britain, C.1868-1899, Edward Peter Joshua Gosling
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis examines the development of the soldier in late-Victorian Britain in light of the movement to rehabilitate the public image of the ordinary ranks initiated by the Cardwell-Childers Reforms. Venerated in popular culture, Tommy Atkins became a symbol of British imperial strength and heroism. Socially, however, attitudes to the rank-and-file were defined by a pragmatic realism purged of such sentiments, the likes of which would characterise the British public’s relationship with their army for over thirty years. Scholars of both imperial culture and the Victorian military have identified this dual persona of Tommy Atkins, however, a dedicated study into …
Immigration Policy And The Role Of Political Discourses In The Relationship Between Foreign Nationals And Crime In England And Wales, Khamael Hasan Naji Al-Faris
Immigration Policy And The Role Of Political Discourses In The Relationship Between Foreign Nationals And Crime In England And Wales, Khamael Hasan Naji Al-Faris
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Significant criminological attention has been given to the relationship between immigration and crime. However, this relationship has not been researched in the UK to any great extent, and consequently the information on the UK context is limited. This research investigates how the criminality of foreign nationals have been constructed by examining the nature of immigration policy, foreign criminality discourses, and the media in the UK to understand how crime in particular has been used to define, refine, and inform control of immigrants. This study refers to the legislative, policy, and political factors that underpin this process, and particularly explains how …
Doing Community Safety By Locality Working: Regime Theory And Micro-Climates Of Crime And Disorder Co-Governance, Neil Chappell
Doing Community Safety By Locality Working: Regime Theory And Micro-Climates Of Crime And Disorder Co-Governance, Neil Chappell
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The co-governance of crime and disorder and the involvement of the public within quasi-deliberative consultations of participatory forums to this end has been the subject of significant bodies of research (Clarke et al, 2007, Barnes, Newman and Sullivan: 2007). Such forums were applied to the micro-level of the neighbourhood during New Labour’s tenure in office in an attempt to reduce crime and disorder and to improve the responsiveness of service delivery. This has created situations whereby the governance of communities has been shifted to the micro-level of the neighbourhood (Stoker: 2004). Hughes and Edwards (2005) have proposed examining these micro-climates …

Visual Narrative: A Theory And Model For Image-Driven Digital Historiography Based On A Case Study Of China’S Boxer Uprising (C. 1900), Ellen Irene Sebring
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Digitization that has enabled instant access to vast numbers of archival, historical images, demands a new paradigm for the use of visual imagery in historical research. This thesis proposes a new form of historiography in the digital medium, an image-based narrative mode for authoring and reading history. I propose a digital model for conveying history through the visual record, as an alternative to the printed book. Unlike the quantitative “big data” approach to digital humanities, this research explores visuality itself. In a practice-led approach, the research addresses both aspects of historiography: (1) a method of historical representation; and (2) original …
Theōria: The Veneration Of Icons Via The Technoetic Process, Ekaterini Karoussos
Theōria: The Veneration Of Icons Via The Technoetic Process, Ekaterini Karoussos
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
The Second Council of Nicaea, in 787 AD, marked the end of iconoclasm, while in 843 the Treaty of Verdun laid the foundations of Europe. With these agreements, a sustained period of imageless iconolatry was initiated. However, the veneration of icons was based on the absolute worship of matter and form, which replaced the prime spiritual concept of ‘image and likeness’. Millennia of research and thought resulted in imageless representations of natural phenomena. Pushing aside the topology of the image and its sign, the intelligent man, from the Age of Reason and onward, considered himself as an auto-authorised and teleological-free …
Thermography Approaches For Building Defect Detection, Matthew Fox
Thermography Approaches For Building Defect Detection, Matthew Fox
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Thermography is one technology, which can be used to detect thermally significant defects in buildings and is traditionally performed using a walk-through methodology. Yet because of limitations such as transient climatic changes, there is a key performance gap between image capture and interpretation. There are however new methodologies currently available, which actively address some of these limitations. By better understanding alternative methodologies, the performance gap can be reduced. This thesis contrasts three thermography methodologies (Walk-through, time-lapse and pass-by) to learn how they deal with limitations and address specific building defects and thermal performance issues. For each approach, practical methodologies were …

Duchamp Meets Turing: Art, Modernism, Posthuman, Gabriela Galati
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
In her book How We Became Posthuman (1999), Katherine Hayles analysed the process through which the conception of the liberal humanist subject led the way to the posthuman subject, a subject who lives in complete entwinement with the digital. This process, however, was not innocuous: it made the (fallacious) perception that information could do without material instantiation pervasive within many fields of knowledge, a process that Hayles contends originates in the Macy Conferences and the evolution of cybernetic theory. This research identifies an analogous process within the artistic realm: when Clement Greenberg delineated the concepts of opticality and colour field …

Performing Lgbt Pride In Plymouth 1950 - 2012, Alan Butler
Performing Lgbt Pride In Plymouth 1950 - 2012, Alan Butler
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis considers how the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered communities of Plymouth have performed and signified their own culture and identities during the period 1950 to 2012. Its source materials were largely generated by conducting oral history interviews with members of Plymouth’s LGB and T communities. This resulted in the creation of an archive which included thirty-seven interviews conducted with twenty-four individuals. These interviews, in conjunction with other uncovered archival memorabilia, now form a specific LGBT collection with Plymouth and West Devon Record Office. This PhD thesis interrogates this newly created community archive accession, using theories of performance as …
Social Exclusion, Resort Decline And The English Seaside, Steven Jakes
Social Exclusion, Resort Decline And The English Seaside, Steven Jakes
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
Traditionally seaside resorts have been one of the least understood of Britain’s ‘problem areas’. This thesis breaks new ground by reporting on an exploratory data analysis to probe the influence of resort decline on social exclusion in England’s seaside resorts. Drawing on a wide range of socio-economic datasets and quantitative methods of data analysis and GIS software, the study investigates the scale, nature and extent of multiple deprivation in English seaside resorts, differences in socio-economic structure between deprived and non-deprived resorts and the factors that may explain these differences, and the nature and incidence of localised problem complexes. A combination …

Labyrinth Psychotica - Simulating Psychotic Phenomena, Jennifer Kanary Nikolov(A)
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis forms a valuable tool of analysis, as well as an important reference guide to anyone interested in communicating, expressing, representing, simulating and or imagining what it is like to experience psychotic phenomena. Understanding what it is like to experience psychotic phenomena is difficult. Those who have experience with it find it hard to describe, and those who do not have that experience find it hard to envision. Yet, the ability to understand is crucial to the interaction with a person struggling with psychotic experiences, and for this help is needed. In recent years, the psychosis simulation projects Mindstorm, …
Towards A Cinema Of Imperfection: Participatory Film As Research, Allister Gall
Towards A Cinema Of Imperfection: Participatory Film As Research, Allister Gall
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This PhD is a practice as research interrogation of the emancipatory potential of the idea of imperfection. It is framed around the key leading question: ‘How can the generation of imperfect praxis – cultural production in and through social dialogues challenging notions of technical expertise – affirm emancipatory value in a film practice? The thesis documents the development of a participatory film practice, operating in-between d.i.y subcultural activity and practice as research. The film component of the submission engages with the problems involved in representing and authenticating the collective dimension of participatory filmmaking. The emancipatory potential of imperfection has been …
Reciprocal Technologies: Enabling The Reciprocal Exchange Of Voice In Small-Scale Farming Communities Through The Transformation Of Information And Communications Technologies, Eugenio Tisselli
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This dissertation claims that the reciprocal exchange of voice—an element for constructing community and strengthening political recognition—may be fostered in small-scale farming communities by (1) the appropriation and transformation of information and communications technologies, (2) artistic intervention, and (3) cross-community research. This study contributes to participatory research methodologies, particularly those that seek to tackle the diverse challenges faced by small-scale farmers from a broad, complex perspective. The main issue identified in this dissertation is as follows: The hegemony of economic behaviors, which stands as a cornerstone of neoliberal capitalism, constitutes the latest stage of a historical process in which the …
Development Of Recognition Memory: Process Dissociation Of Recollection And Familiarity In Children, Laura Koenig
Development Of Recognition Memory: Process Dissociation Of Recollection And Familiarity In Children, Laura Koenig
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
There is an extensive debate in the adult literature on whether recognition memory can better be explained by a single- or a dual-process account. Single-process accounts assume that a single memory strength signal underlies recognition. Dual-process accounts propose two independent processes, namely recollection (slow and associated with contextual details) and familiarity (fast and automatic). The aim of this dissertation was to advance this debate using a cognitive developmental approach. By investigating age-related changes of recognition memory across childhood as a function of theoretically motivated experimental manipulations, predictions drawn from single- and dual-process models of recognition memory were tested. We adapted …
Flow. Interactive Sonic Art: The Creation And Use Of Responsive Strategies To Re-Imagine The Performer/Spectator Relationship And Create Visitor Inclusive Sonic Environments., Peter Shepherd

Literal And Figurative Meanings Of Spanish Spatial Prepositions In Chinese Students’ Acquisition Of Spanish As A Third Language, Pablo Encinas Arquero
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
This thesis investigates the acquisition of the spatial and figurative meanings of five Spanish spatial particles, namely sobre, encima, debajo, bajo and en, by a group of Chinese university students of Spanish as a foreign language at intermediate and upper-intermediate language levels. More specifically, this study aims to answer two questions. The first question considers the order of acquisition of prepositional meanings, that is, whether this is similar to a native language, with literal and more primary meanings acquired first and figurative ones later or, conversely, whether the pattern of acquisition is different to that found in a first language …
That Dark Remembered Day - A Novel, And Critical Self-Reflection On Composition And The Editorial Process, Tom Vowler
That Dark Remembered Day - A Novel, And Critical Self-Reflection On Composition And The Editorial Process, Tom Vowler
Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses
My aim for That Dark Remembered Day was to create a work of fiction with a strong sense of the literary, one whose themes of violence, landscape and survivor guilt shone a light on the human condition, specifically the effects of post-war trauma on one family. The novel’s structure would be crucial in achieving its emotional heft, as each of the central characters is allocated at least one section, the reader experiencing events from disparate and increasingly illuminating perspectives. Fragmenting the book’s chronology (both throughout, but particularly in Part 3) by employing a technique of temporal blurring, helped to recreate …
Mass-Participation Architecture: Social Media And The Decentralisation Of Architectural Agency As A Commercial Imperative, Alexander Lorimer
Mass-Participation Architecture: Social Media And The Decentralisation Of Architectural Agency As A Commercial Imperative, Alexander Lorimer
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
A key problem in the field of architecture and urban planning since the 1960s has been the marginal role played by the general public in directly shaping significant aspects of the built environment. This thesis draws on theories around participatory planning, and in particular, the seminal 1969 publication ‘Non-plan: An Experiment in Freedom’. Non-plan suggested the potential of digital technology to facilitate self-organising public participation in architectural design and urban planning, while also taking inspiration from consumer- responsive activities across commercial disciplines. Now, half a century later, advancing web-technologies are beginning to facilitate mass-participatory design as a commercial imperative, and …

This study examined the impact of providing progress feedback to individuals with disabilities receiving services at a state vocational rehabilitation (VR) agency. Thirty individuals were randomly assigned to receive either group therapy (treatment-as-usual, TAU) or group therapy plus feedback (treatment, Fb) during a 10-week counseling program at one of five agency offices. Each week, participants attended a 90-minute session and completed a measure of mental health (Outcome Questionnaire-45). Longitudinal multilevel models were used to evaluate the hypothesis that participation in the Fb group would lead to improved mental health. The effect of the intervention was conditional on receipt of public …

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications
The specialization of life care planning continues to evolve through empirical research and periodic standards of practice symposiums. Within this evolution, the need exists towards advancing the profession through the creation of a universal and standardized approach among all who operate within the field of life care planning regarding when/when not to include secondary complication costs into a life care plan. Opposing life care planners (LCPs) are sometimes millions of dollars apart in projected costs, often generally attributed to the inclusion of such costs which may be possible (51%) from a life care planning certainty threshold. The current study surveyed …

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications
Spinal cord injury (SCI) and secondary complications (SCs) that occur as a direct result of the injury can be a contributing factor for increased hospitalization and need for specialized healthcare. For instance, level of injury, time since injury, gender, age, and personal health care have shown to increase and/or decrease the incidence rate of specific SCs. The authors conducted a comprehensive literature review for 12 SCs to examine the relative prevalence of each for people with SCI. The data utilized was to determine the probability (>50%) versus the possibility (
