Whether Puerto Rico’S Exclusion From Chapter 9 Is Non-Uniform Within The Meaning Of The Bankruptcy Clause Of The United States Constitution, Matthew T. Repetto Jan 2016

Whether Puerto Rico’S Exclusion From Chapter 9 Is Non-Uniform Within The Meaning Of The Bankruptcy Clause Of The United States Constitution, Matthew T. Repetto

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Amid the most serious fiscal crisis in its history, Puerto Rico’s public utilities are currently insolvent or at risk of becoming insolvent. In 2013, several distressed Puerto Rican public corporations had a combined deficit that totaled $800 million, and a combined debt reaching $20 billion. One avenue for Puerto Rico’s public utilities to restructure their debt, and perhaps the only avenue, is municipal bankruptcy relief. Unlike States, Puerto Rico “may not authorize its municipalities to seek Chapter 9 municipal bankruptcy relief” under title 11 of the United States Code (the “Bankruptcy Code”). An amendment to the Bankruptcy Code in …

Life Adversity, Social Support, Resilience, And College Student Mental Health, Joshua Mello

All Master's Theses

This study investigated how adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), current college student hassles, and perceived social support relate to college student resilience. This study also explored how ACEs, current college student hassles, perceived social support, and resilience relate to college student mental health. A sample of 507 students from a public university in Washington State completed an online study which consisted of surveys operationalizing each variable. Interpersonal Approach To Dementia: An Ipad-Based Program For Caregiver Education And Decreasing Problem Behaviors In Older Adults With Cognitive Impairments, Anna Olexsovich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Overall Problem

More than 10 million family members care for an older adult with dementia in the community. Due to the progressive nature of dementia, a high burden of care is placed on caregivers. Adult day centers offer respite, but while providing families temporary relief from caregiving responsibilities, they do not emphasize interventions for individuals with dementia. Agitation, a symptom of dementia, can affect both the older adult and others around them negatively. When the caregivers of older adults with dementia receive proper education about interacting with and caring for someone with this progressive disease, the quality of life of …

Disabling Psychology: A Crip Analysis Of Deaf And Blind Psychotherapists In Practice, Kathryn Irene Wagner Jan 2016

Disabling Psychology: A Crip Analysis Of Deaf And Blind Psychotherapists In Practice, Kathryn Irene Wagner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the phenomenological experience of d/Deaf or blind psychotherapists who work with nondisabled clients, seeking to understand the perceived impact of disability on the therapeutic relationship. There is an abundance of research on nondisabled therapists treating disabled clients but only a handful of studies qualitatively considering the disabled therapist’s understanding of practicing in a largely ableist world. Six deaf and eight blind therapists were interviewed for this dissertation. Results were qualitatively analyzed using interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA). Results were also interpreted through a critical disability studies framework with an eye toward challenging the ableism embedded within traditional research …

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Bromeliads are used by many frog species because of their capacity to accumulate rainwater. The bromeligenous frog, Phyllodytes luteolus (Yellow Heart-Tongued Frog), uses bromeliads for its entire life cycle including shelter, foraging, and reproduction. We evaluated the effect of plant morphometrics and the properties of water accumulated in bromeliads on the selection of these plants by P. luteolus. We sampled 103 bromeliads of which 41 were unoccupied and 62 were occupied by P. luteolus. Results suggest that bromeliad occupation by P. luteolus is nonrandom. We found that occupied plants were shorter in height, had a greater number of leaves, and …

Smoke & Mirrors: Bankruptcy Relief Remains Elusive For Marijuana Businesses And Their Creditors, Todd Plummer Jan 2016

Smoke & Mirrors: Bankruptcy Relief Remains Elusive For Marijuana Businesses And Their Creditors, Todd Plummer

Bankruptcy Research Library

(Excerpt)

Today, twenty-three states and the District of Columbia allow marijuana for medical purposes, and four of those states and the District of Columbia have legalized the drug’s recreational use. Despite this tidal shift in state laws and public opinion, marijuana remains a Schedule I substance under the Controlled Substances Act (“CSA”), meaning the federal government does not recognize its use in medical treatment, classifies the drug as having a high potential for abuse, and that no prescriptions may be written for it. Moreover, the CSA specifically makes it illegal to “rent, lease, profit from or make available for use” …

Creative Connections: Engaging Students And Faculty Through A Library Artist In Residence, Alexandra Chappell Jan 2016

Creative Connections: Engaging Students And Faculty Through A Library Artist In Residence, Alexandra Chappell

Library Staff Publications and Research

It can be challenging to forge connections between an academic library and undergraduate art students, who are often heavily engaged in beginning studio practice and may only associate the library with the more traditional research done by other disciplines. One way to overcome this challenge is to change their perceptions of the library through programming that demonstrates that the library can be a site for exploration, inspiration, research, and innovation by artists. At the Claremont Colleges Library, we partnered with a member of the art faculty to create a Library Artist in Residence (LAIR) program, which has the twin goals …

Developing A Primary Source Lab Series: A Collaboration Between Special Collections And Subject Collections Librarians, Adam Rosenkranz, Gale Burrow, Lisa L. Crane

Library Staff Publications and Research

In 2014 librarians at the Claremont Colleges Library piloted a 2-part workshop series that gave graduate students the opportunity to closely read a primary source as artifact, explore related digital primary sources, identify interesting research questions, and find secondary scholarship that spoke to those questions. This Primary Source Workshop series was developed collaboratively by special collections librarians, subject liaison librarians, and graduate faculty. The series has since been adapted for a variety of graduate and undergraduate classes. As a sequence, the workshops emphasize the continuity from paper sources to digital sources and the interrelationships of primary and secondary sources in …

The Effect Of Victim Religion On Juror Perceptions Of Hate Crimes, Casey Magyarics Jan 2016

The Effect Of Victim Religion On Juror Perceptions Of Hate Crimes, Casey Magyarics

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

The present study investigated mock juror perceptions of hate crimes in the courtroom, specifically whether a victim’s religion (Atheist, Christian, Jewish, or Muslim) influenced the likelihood that a mock juror would render a hate crime verdict. I employed a mock juror methodology where participants read an assault trial summary, rendered a verdict, and answered a series of rating questions about the victim and defendant. Two theoretical explanations were proposed to explain the main effect of victim religion on participant verdict decisions; that participants would be most likely to render a guilty verdict when the victim is considered an in-group member …

Pulling The Trigger On Disarming Domestic Violence Abusers: Implementing Gun Confiscation Policy In Urban And Appalachian Kentucky, Kellie R. Lynch

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

The present study investigated why communities differing in culture and resources are willing and able to implement gun confiscation as part of a protective order. Specifically, this study explored whether the perceived risk of intimate partner homicide and gun violence, benefits to engaging in gun confiscation, barriers to gun confiscation, community norms about guns, and community readiness to implement gun confiscation: (a) differ in urban and rural communities, (b) are perceived differently by victim service and justice system key professionals within urban and rural communities, and (c) are related to if a community is able and willing to consistently implement …
