Parent Perceptions Of A Child Physical Activity Initiative In A Rural Community., Katie F. Leslie, Kristi M. King, Richard W. Wilson, Patricia Gagne, V. Faye Jones
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This study assessed the extent to which a community-based intervention developed for children impacted parent perceptions and behaviors toward physical activity in a rural community. Focus groups and individual interviews were conducted with parents of children who participated in physical activity programs. Analysis revealed an increased community awareness surrounding physical activity following program implementation. Parents and children encouraged each other to be physically active. Ecological barriers and enabling factors to adult physical activity were identified these findings indicate a bidirectional influence between parent and child physical activity and the need for community facilities where families can be active together.
Communicating Entrepreneurial Passion: Personal Passion Vs. Perceived Passion In Venture Pitches, Kristen Lucas, Sharon Kerrick, Jenna Haugen, Cole J. Crider
Communicating Entrepreneurial Passion: Personal Passion Vs. Perceived Passion In Venture Pitches, Kristen Lucas, Sharon Kerrick, Jenna Haugen, Cole J. Crider
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Research problem: Entrepreneurial passion has been shown to play an important role in venture success and therefore in investors’ funding decisions. However, it is unknown whether the passion entrepreneurs personally feel or experience can be accurately assessed by investors during a venture pitch. Research questions: (1) To what extent does entrepreneurs’ personal passion align with investors’ perceived passion? (2) To what cues do investors attend when assessing entrepreneurs’ passion? Literature review: Integrating theory and research in entrepreneurship communication and entrepreneurial passion within the context of venture pitching, we explain that during venture pitches, investors make judgments about entrepreneurs’ passion that …

Generational Growing Pains As Resistance To Feminine Gendering Of Organization? An Archival Analysis Of Human Resource Management Discourses, Kristen Lucas, Suzy D'Enbeau, Erica P. Heiden
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Guided by a feminist communicology of organization framework, we examine generational growing pains by analyzing discourses appearing in HR Magazine at three different points in time, which approximately mark the midpoint of Baby Boomers’, Gen Xers’, and Millennials’ initial entry into the workplace. We reconstruct historically situated gendered discourses that encapsulate key concerns expressed by human resource management professionals as they dealt with younger generations of workers: Personnel Man as Father Knows Best (1970), Human Resource Specialist as Loyalty Builder (1990), and Talent Manager as Nurturer (2010). We propose that frustrations expressed by older generations about Millennials may not be …

We present an approach to the bright soliton solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation from the standpoint of introducing a constant potential term in the equation. We discuss a “nongauge” bright soliton for which both the envelope and the phase depend only on the traveling variable. We also construct a family of generalized NLS equations with solitonic sechpsechp solutions in the traveling variable and find an exact equivalence with other nonlinear equations, such as the Korteveg–de Vries (KdV) and Benjamin–Bona–Mahony (BBM) equations when p=2.

Promoting Bullying Prevention And Intervention Through Forgiveness Education, Amy Gregory
Promoting Bullying Prevention And Intervention Through Forgiveness Education, Amy Gregory
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
There is growing recognition of the severe, adverse long-term effects that bullying behaviors have, on the victims or on bullies. Although there are many existing anti-bullying programs that are designed to counteract both the behaviors and their potential long-term negative effects, forgiveness education programs may also be used to help create a positive school climate in which bullies can take responsibility for their behaviors and begin to reintegrate into the social fabric of the school. The purpose of this research proposal is to examine the effects of the International Forgiveness Institute's (IFI) forgiveness education curriculum in comparison to an anti-bullying …

From Soprano To Barking Dog : John Cage, The Avant Garde, And The Counterculture, 1940-1975, Heather M. Mcalpine
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
John Cage’s compositions, representative of second generation avant-garde music, are an integral part of any discussion of the sixties, and his work complicates parts of the counterculture historiography. While the political ideology that drives Cage’s compositions fit many of the counterculture’s aims, it has not been included in the historiography in its own right. The evidence suggests instead that his ideas, and those of the new avant-garde of which he was a part, were actually a piece of a consistent tradition that extended into the counterculture. Historians and musicologists have not done justice to Cage’s long background of political ideas …
Sex And Political Participation On Facebook, Rachel Gregory
Sex And Political Participation On Facebook, Rachel Gregory
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Active political participation from the citizenry is essential for a healthy democracy. However, research finds a significant sex gap in political participation, limiting the influence of a substantial group from the political system and democratic representation. This division by sex is further marked by the types of political activities in which males and females engage. Candidates, elected officials, political organizations and voters alike now utilize Facebook as a means to spread political messages and engage the citizenry. Facebook is also a platform dominated by women. Due to women’s position on social media, it is hypothesized that women and men participate …
An Examination Of The Perceptions Of The Iep Process As A Team Plans For The Potential Reintegration Of A Student From An Alternative Setting To The Resident District, Sarah J. Knudsen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) of 1990 determined that students with disabilities are to learn in the least restrictive environment (LRE). The IEP team has the responsibility to determine placement that is as non-restrictive as possible and yet appropriate. For students with Emotional Disturbances (ED) the concept of LRE is contentious. The purpose of this research was to investigate the perceptions of IEP team members as to the factors on which decisions are made throughout the IEP process for students with ED as the team planned for reintegration from an alternative setting into the student’s home district. This …
Training For Bargaining, Jenny Roberts, Ronald F. Wright
Training For Bargaining, Jenny Roberts, Ronald F. Wright
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
While plea bargaining dominates the practice of criminal law, preparation for trial remains central to defense attorneys' training. Negotiation is still peripheral to that training. Defense lawyers enter practice with little exposure to negotiation techniques and strategies in the plea bargaining context, the most significant skills they will use every day.
Empirical research on plea negotiations has concentrated on outcomes of negotiations rather than the process itself. Our multiphase field study examines the negotiation techniques that attorneys use during plea bargaining as well as their preparation and training for negotiation. This Article explores the data on the training aspects of …
Conspiracy As Contract, Laurent Sacharoff
Conspiracy As Contract, Laurent Sacharoff
Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship
This article considers the central concept of criminal conspiracy – the agreement. It shows how both courts and scholars have almost entirely failed to define it. Even more surprisingly, neither discusses how "agreement" in criminal conspiracy compares with the agreement in contract law. Instead, courts have diluted the agreement requirement by substituting "mutual understanding" or "slight connection," leading to uncertainty, unfairness, and a profusion of conspiracy convictions for mere presence or association.
This article argues courts should define agreement, and do so as an exchange of promises between the conspirators to commit a crime. An exchange of promises meets the …
Press Clause And 3d Printing, Jasper L. Tran
Press Clause And 3d Printing, Jasper L. Tran
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
Judges and scholars have argued that the “freedom . . . of the press” not only protects the press as an industry, but also protects the use of the printing press and its modern equivalents as a technology. This paper argues that the Constitution’s Framers intentionally used the phrase “the press,” rather than “journalism” or “communication” in the Press Clause, to protect technologies unknown at the time, which necessarily include the 3D printer—the modern equivalent of the printing press.
3d Printing: Digital Infringement & Digital Regulation, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim
3d Printing: Digital Infringement & Digital Regulation, Tabrez Y. Ebrahim
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
3D printing is a rapidly-growing technology that enables creation of three-dimensional solid objects made from a digital Computer Aided Design (“CAD”) file. Patent law issues are particularly relevant and uncertain in the realm of 3D printing. Thus, analysis of the Patent Act is needed to better understand direct infringement (of either the use of a 3D printer, of a CAD file, or under the doctrine of equivalents), indirect infringement, and contributory infringement in the context of 3D printing. A key issue in this analysis is whether a CAD file should be viewed as making the object itself, since 3D printing …
Judicial Litigation Reforms Make Comprehensive Patent Legislation Unnecessary As Well As Counterproductive, Hon. Paul R. Michel
Judicial Litigation Reforms Make Comprehensive Patent Legislation Unnecessary As Well As Counterproductive, Hon. Paul R. Michel
Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property
The patent system provides the necessary incentives for continuing investments in invention, fostering economic growth, creating new jobs and increasing America's competitiveness in the global marketplace. In fact, innovation is now our only competitive advantage. Intellectual property, particularly patents, now constitutes nearly 80% of the value of most corporations. But the innovation eco-system is under heavy stress due to five converging hurricane-force winds, all intersecting in just the last two or so years: the impact of the new reviews authorized by the America Invents Act, invalidating most challenged patents; six landmark Supreme court decisions, particularly three casting doubt over the …

"I'M Too Stressed To 'Like' Your Post!": Exploring The Connections Among Facebook Relational Maintenance, Stress, And Closeness, Jamie E. Foster, Allison R. Thorson
Iowa Journal of Communication
This study examined the relationships among Facebook relational maintenance strategies, relationship closeness, and stress. Participants' (N = 127) responses were analyzed through a series of correlations, ANOVAs, and moderated regressions. Results indicated that there was a strong, positive correlation between closeness and Facebook relational maintenance strategies (i.e., social contact, response-seeking, and relational assurances). When subjected to a moderated regression analysis, however, the relationship between closeness and relational assurances was moderated by stress-such that, the more participants reported being stressed, the less they reported posting Facebook messages related to the assessment or progression of their relationship. Stress, however, did not significantly …

Dropping In On Dropouts: An Analysis Of Withdrawals From The University Of Northern Iowa, Lindsey Marie Pedersen
Honors Program Theses
A university needs to maintain enrollment to keep its budget relatively constant each year. Universities can maintain enrollment by either recruiting new students or retaining current students. Retaining current students requires fewer resources, making retention the more cost effective strategy. To increase retention a university must know the factors that lead to withdrawal. However, current withdrawal studies focus on aggregate enrollment. At the University of Northern Iowa (UNI), students who have decided to withdraw from classes during the semester complete a form that asks for their reason of withdrawal. The Enrollment Management Department at UNI could use the student responses …
Cultivating Trust In Gmo Science: Moving Past The Deficit Model To Productive And Participatory Science Education, Kate Crowley , '16
Cultivating Trust In Gmo Science: Moving Past The Deficit Model To Productive And Participatory Science Education, Kate Crowley , '16
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
Most scientists believe GMOs are safe for human consumption, but a majority of the American public remains unconvinced. I argue that this lack of trust stems from scientists' outdated approach to science communication, namely the deficit model. Instead of seeing the public as empty vessels waiting to be filled with scientific knowledge, the scientific community must recognize that many strongly held beliefs about science issues are socially situated. Only through genuine attempts at participatory, two-way conversations with the public can the scientific community come to understand how public values influence GMO acceptance. While these actions will necessitate a redefining of …

Swine influenza is a highly contagious respiratory viral infection in pigs that is responsible for significant financial losses to pig farmers annually. Current measures to protect herds from infection include: inactivated whole-virus vaccines, subunit vaccines, and alpha replicon-based vaccines. As is true for influenza vaccines for humans, these strategies do not provide broad protection against the diverse strains of influenza A virus (IAV) currently circulating in U.S. swine. Improved approaches to developing swine influenza vaccines are needed. Here, we used immunoinformatics tools to identify class I and II T cell epitopes highly conserved in seven representative strains of IAV in …

Kick'em Jenny is a frequently erupting, shallow submarine volcano located 7.5 km off the northern coast of Grenada in the Lesser Antilles subduction zone. Focused and diffuse hydrothermal venting is taking place mainly within a small (∼70 × 110 m) depression within the 300 m diameter crater of the volcano at depths of about 265 m. Much of the crater is blanketed with a layer of fine‐grained tephra that has undergone hydrothermal alteration. Clear fluids and gas are being discharged near the center of the depression from mound‐like vents at a maximum temperature of 180°C. The gas consists of 93–96% …

The Fishery And Ecology Of Cittarium Pica In The West Indies, Reuban James-Allen Macfarlan
Open Access Dissertations
Cittarium pica, the West Indian Top Shell or “whelk,” is an understudied but culturally and ecologically important intertidal gastropod in the Caribbean. The species faces overexploitation and possible extirpation in much of its range due to a confluence of factors including life-history traits, a diffuse artisanal fishery, and lack of basic scientific knowledge. The undocumented, unregulated, and unreported nature of artisanal and small-scale commercial harvesting of this species renders its study quite different from that of other more recognizable species such as conch or spiny lobster. Here I have compiled four manuscripts that address specific questions related to the …

Building Resilience: Marina Owners' Priorities, Matthew Frediani
Open Access Master's Theses
Increased storm intensity combined with rising sea levels and increased erosion will likely create new challenges for marina owners and policy makers. Climate change poses threats to infrastructure, navigability, and the general aesthetics of a marina. Observations show little action has been taken by Rhode Island marina owners towards increasing resilience to climate change, leaving the Rhode Island industry vulnerable.
This study investigates the perceptions and priorities of ten Rhode Island marina owners to gauge their priorities and perceptions towards increasing resilience at their facility to rising sea levels and future storms. Interviews were conducted with ten marina owners to …

Diet Of The Endangered Big-Headed Turtle Platysternon Megacephalum, Yik-Hei Sung, Billy C.H. Hau, Nancy E. Karraker
Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications
Populations of the big-headed turtle Platysternon megacephalum are declining at unprecedented rates across most of its distribution in Southeast Asia owing to unsustainable harvest for pet, food, and Chinese medicine markets. Research on Asian freshwater turtles becomes more challenging as populations decline and basic ecological information is needed to inform conservation efforts. We examined fecal samples collected from P. megacephalum in five streams in Hong Kong to quantify the diet, and we compared the germination success of ingested and uningested seeds. Fruits, primarily of Machilus spp., were most frequently consumed, followed by insects, plant matter, crabs and mollusks. The niche …
