Unpacking 'Give Back Box:' A Social Enterprise At The Intersection Of Leadership, Innovation, And Sustainability, Eduardo Barrientos, Anne H. Reilly
Unpacking 'Give Back Box:' A Social Enterprise At The Intersection Of Leadership, Innovation, And Sustainability, Eduardo Barrientos, Anne H. Reilly
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Once the domain of government agencies and non-profit organizations, a social enterprise integrates social benefits such as employment and sustainability into a for-profit firm's mission. The social enterprise (SE) bottom line includes both economic and social value, reflecting an intersection of the Jesuit leadership tradition with commercial business enterprise. This case study describes the start-up of Give Back Box (GBB), a Chicago-based social enterprise that supports recycling and repurposing. GBB's business model involves providing a convenient, no-cost opportunity to follow up an online purchase by recycling the shipping box to forward unneeded items to charities. GBB was founded in 2012 …
Lessons Jesuit Business Programs Can Learn From Chinese Mba Programs, Mary Bernice Mcgrath
Lessons Jesuit Business Programs Can Learn From Chinese Mba Programs, Mary Bernice Mcgrath
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
North American Schools of Business have been “going global” by transplanting pedagogy and content to Asia and Africa for several centuries. From a teaching perspective, our western schools look to these regions as contexts to provide richness to our students’ educational experience, to prepare Americans for dealings in the global business marketplace, and often to increase our own enrollments and revenues. To date we have served as “exporters” of our own Western brand of MBA education.
Using an ethnographic approach of participant observation gained through two years of teaching and living in China supplemented with interviews with Chinese students studying …

Beyond ‘Innocents Abroad’: Reflecting On Sustainability Issues During International Study Trips, Anne H. Reilly, Mary Ann Pauline Mcgrath, Kristine Reilly
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
With ecosystems and populations in many regions threatened by rapid development, sustainability is a critical component for businesses in mature markets and emerging economies alike. The International Association of Jesuit Business Schools notes that global sustainability involves a broad set of interconnected issues ranging from environmental preservation to social justice to desirable production and consumption patterns. Jesuit business schools are uniquely positioned to address sustainability issues with their focus on teaching managerial content in tandem with corporate social responsibility. Further, the Ignatian Pedagogy Paradigm of experience, reflection, and action would suggest that business students may benefit from reflective observation in …

Exploring Patient-Provider Relationships In Preference-Based Health Care Choices, Linda Tuncay Zayer, Cele C. Otnes, Eileen M. Fischer
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Patient-physician relationship models previously identified in research do not always capture the full range of consumers’ experiences as they engage in difficult, preference-based decisions. Examining the context of individuals seeking infertility treatment, we identify a new Peripheral Model of patient-physician relationship, whereby the physician’s role is perceived as rather inconsequential.

Analysis Of Large Mega Millions Rollovers, Suk H. Lee, Ki C. Han, David Y. Suk, Hyun Mo Sung
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
From May 17, 2002 to December 30, 2014, there were 1,318 Mega Millions drawings and 153 were winning drawings. In 148 out of 153 winning drawings, there was no winner(s) in the first drawing and the jackpot prize was rolled over and added to the next drawing. Since the Mega Millions does not have a rollover limit, this process continues until there is an eventual winning ticket. As the jackpot prize approaches $100 million, significantly larger additional cash flows into the lottery. Based on the analysis of 29 large Mega Millions winning drawings (jackpot prize ≥ $100 million), we report …
Ecological Factors Promoting Academic Resilience Of Latina Students, Rebecca Testa-Ryan
Ecological Factors Promoting Academic Resilience Of Latina Students, Rebecca Testa-Ryan
Dissertations
To enhance the academic success of Latina students, researchers and educators must move away from focusing on deficits and risks and concentrate more on student potential and environmental support, which have been found to successfully open pathways to academic achievement. By shifting the focus, stakeholders can gain an understanding of the educational experiences of Latina students considered on a pathway of educational failure and the processes that can contribute instead to their academic resilience. In this qualitative study, I investigate the ecological factors that influence and impact the academic resiliency of Latina students. Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Ecological System Theory of Human …
Land-Use And Algal Species Influence Bacterial Community Composition And Activity In Streams, Miguel Rojas
Land-Use And Algal Species Influence Bacterial Community Composition And Activity In Streams, Miguel Rojas
Master's Theses
Microbial biofilms can be found on virtually all submerged surfaces in aquatic habitats, including rivers and streams. Biofilms are complex, taxonomically diverse communities of microorganisms (including algae and bacteria) that colonize solid surfaces and support a wide range of metabolic activities. Biofilms are critical components of river and stream ecosystems because they are key drivers of nutrient cycling processes (including nitrogen cycling) and because they serve as an important food source for higher trophic levels. Biofilms in urban streams are subject to a number of anthropogenic stressors, but research on the ecology of urban biofilms and their response to stressors …
The Impact Of Social Class Connectedness, School Belongingness, And Family Cohesion On Lower Class-Identified College Students, Kristen Eileen Adams
The Impact Of Social Class Connectedness, School Belongingness, And Family Cohesion On Lower Class-Identified College Students, Kristen Eileen Adams
Dissertations
This study is one of the first to examine acculturative and enculturative factors as they relate to social class. Much of the extant literature surrounding acculturation and enculturation looks primarily at cultural factors such as race/ethnicity and/or immigration status. Due to the fact that social class is such a salient cultural identity in most individuals' lives and has a bearing on how one views and evaluates themselves in relation to others of differing social classes (Fouad & Brown, 2000), the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of social class connectedness on subjective wellbeing (including positive and negative …
Self-Esteem And Critical Consciousness In The Relation Between Subjective Social Class And Subjective Well-Being Among College Students: Mediation And Moderated Mediation Models, Fatma Aydin
Dissertations
Subjective social class (SSC) and subjective well-being (SWB) are important indicators of mental health, and the scientific literature has indicated significant relationships between these variables. The purpose of this study is to examine the complex mechanisms by which SSC is related to SWB, using a sample of 275 college students. This study first explored whether SSC was indirectly related to SWB through the mediating effect of self-esteem. Three elements of SSC (economic resources, social power, and social prestige) and three elements of SWB (satisfaction with life, negative affect, and positive affect) were investigated. Using process analysis, the results showed that …

Quality Of Math Instruction Matters: Examining Validity And Reliability Of High Impact Strategies In Early Mathematics (His-Em), Bilge Cerezci
Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to introduce a measure of early mathematics teaching practices, the High Impact Strategies in Early Mathematics (HIS-EM) and its framework, and to examine its criterion-related, predictive validity of High Impact Strategies in Early Mathematics (HIS-EM) and describe the types of early math teaching the HIS-EM detects among a sample of Pre-kindergarten to 3rd grade teachers working with high need students in an urban public schools system. The findings indicate that the HIS-EM produced reliable scores, and meaningful and predictable associations were found between HIS-EM and CLASS. The results also suggested that high quality mathematics …
Understanding The Role Of Leadership Motivation In College Student Leadership Development, Benjamin Paul Correia-Harker
Understanding The Role Of Leadership Motivation In College Student Leadership Development, Benjamin Paul Correia-Harker
Dissertations
Current scholarship situates leadership capacity, leadership self-efficacy, and motivation as core factors in predicting leadership action (Chan & Drasgow, 2001; Dugan, 2017). With relationships between leadership capacity and self-efficacy clearly established in college student leadership development literature (Dugan & Komives, 2007, 2010), this research endeavors to better understand motivation’s role in the student leadership development process. Using Dugan (2017) and Chan and Drasgow’s (2001) theoretical models as guides, this research will examine several models that test various relationships between leadership capacity, self-efficacy, and motivation. Because scholars have emphasized the importance of disaggregating data based on social identities (Kodama & Dugan, …
A Fire That Could Not Be Extinguished: Sovereignty And Identity In The Pokagon Band Of Potawatomi Indians, 1634-1994, Melisa Cushing-Davis
A Fire That Could Not Be Extinguished: Sovereignty And Identity In The Pokagon Band Of Potawatomi Indians, 1634-1994, Melisa Cushing-Davis
Dissertations
American Indian sovereignty and identity, the rights of political and economic self-determination and self-definition, have suffered numerous blows since the time of First Contact. Under the policies of various European nations, and finally the United States, indigenous residents of North America have struggled to maintain political independence, as well as cultural and social integrity, while adapting to changing conditions over which they found themselves, most often, to have little direct control. Such is the history of the Potawatomi people. This dissertation examines the historic responses to these continuing challenges of one band of Potawatomi, the Pokagon of southwestern Michigan. It …
Cooking, Cooking Pots, And Cultural Transformation In Imperial And Late Antique Italy, Andrew Donnelly
Cooking, Cooking Pots, And Cultural Transformation In Imperial And Late Antique Italy, Andrew Donnelly
Dissertations
An examination of archaeological and textual evidence for cooking—specifically, cooking pots—in Italy reveals a significant amount of information about transforming status, culture, and identity under the later Empire and Late Antiquity. There was never was one “Roman” diet or form of cooking, even under the early Empire. The diet of the poor was often in flux, and depended on local resources, traditions, and economic conditions. Elite cooking, meanwhile, is easily identifiable both archaeologically and textually, and marked by the use of multiple vessels in conjunction to prepare elaborate, sauce-rich meals.
By the fifth century there was a winnowing of ceramic …
Defect Or Defend? Explaining Military Responses During The Arab Uprisings, Timothy Hazen
Defect Or Defend? Explaining Military Responses During The Arab Uprisings, Timothy Hazen
Dissertations
The Arab uprisings demonstrated that a military's response to the domestic unrest had a significant impact on whether the protests were successful and triggered regime change. In Egypt and Tunisia, the militaries defected from the incumbent regimes, and as a result the ruling leaders were removed, whereas in Bahrain, the military defended the regime and used violence against protesters, which led to the continuation of the government's rule. Scholars identify numerous factors to explain Middle East and North African (MENA) military behavior during the Arab uprising but overall these arguments tend to overemphasize individual case studies and fail to provide …
Simulation Learning And Transfer To The Clinical Environment In Undergraduate Nursing Students, David A. Miles
Simulation Learning And Transfer To The Clinical Environment In Undergraduate Nursing Students, David A. Miles
Dissertations
Simulation learning is an integral component of many undergraduate nursing programs throughout the country. Experiential learning through simulation allows students to improve their cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills. Some clinical experiences lack significant practice of clinical skills for students; including the inability to assume the role of the nurse. A recent literature review revealed a need to advance the understanding of simulation learning and transfer; with many questions still remaining unanswered. The aim of this study was to conceptualize the process by which simulation learning transfers to the clinical environment in undergraduate nursing students. Twenty-five, fourth-year traditional nursing students, who …
Individual Criminal Accountability After Civil Wars: Enforced Disappearances In Algeria And Turkey, Jessica Mecellem
Individual Criminal Accountability After Civil Wars: Enforced Disappearances In Algeria And Turkey, Jessica Mecellem
Dissertations
Increasingly, around the world, individuals are being held criminally accountable for human rights violations (Olsen, Payne and Reiter 2010; Sikkink 2011; Kim & Sikkink 2010, 2012; Kim 2010, 2012; Sriram 2005; Lutz & Reiger 2009). Katherine Sikkink
(2011) characterized this change as a normative shift toward individual criminal accountability, which has resulted in a “justice cascade”, or a “revolution in accountability” (Sriram 2005). Much of the justice cascade literature has focused on the role of trials in democratizing countries. In contrast, this dissertation examines the impact of the norm of individual criminal accountability in two non-democratizing post-conflict contexts: Algeria and …
Exploring Conditions For The Enhancement Of Acene Semiconductors Through The Use Of The Diels-Alder Reaction, Brittni Qualizza Qualizza
Exploring Conditions For The Enhancement Of Acene Semiconductors Through The Use Of The Diels-Alder Reaction, Brittni Qualizza Qualizza
Dissertations
This dissertation demonstrates the application of SAMs to the surface of acene crystals, specifically of tetracene and rubrene, using the Diels-Alder reaction. The second chapter details preliminary reaction results and two analytical methods which were employed to confirm adsorption of the dienophile on the surface of single crystals, tetracene and rubrene. These were mass spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Mass spectrometry experiments distinguish the chemical identity of adduct on the crystals and also it discerned chemi- and physisorbed molecules from one another. XPS was used to prove face selectivity of the reaction by the detection of dichloromaleic anhydride. From …
Badr Al-Dīn Ibn JamāʿAh And The Highest Good Of Islamic Education, Omar Qureshi
Badr Al-Dīn Ibn JamāʿAh And The Highest Good Of Islamic Education, Omar Qureshi
Dissertations
The secularization of the academy thesis refers to the phenomenon of Protestant colleges and universities starting out as identifiable religious institutions of education now being places hostile, not only to Christianity, but religion in general. This has raised much discussion among leaders, faculty members, and students of religious educational institutions as to what is and what constitutes the identity of their respective institutions. It is in this context that we witness the rise in the establishment of Islamic schools in the North America. This context has generated many questions from the various stakeholders on the question of what the term …

Examining The Effects Of Anti-Nogo A Immunotherapy On Post-Stroke Neurogenesis In The Adult Rat, Daniel Shepherd
Examining The Effects Of Anti-Nogo A Immunotherapy On Post-Stroke Neurogenesis In The Adult Rat, Daniel Shepherd
Dissertations
Stroke is a leading cause of adult disability with no pharmacological treatments to restore lost function. Our laboratory has shown that treatment with neutralizing antibodies against the neurite growth-inhibitory protein Nogo-A improves sensorimotor and cognitive recovery after stroke in adult and aged rats. This recovery is paralleled by increased dendritic and axonal plasticity in anti-Nogo-A-treated rats. Neurogenesis, an alternate form of plasticity involving the de novo production of new neurons, may contribute to post-stroke neural repair. While previous studies have found roles for Nogo-A in adult neurogenesis, neurogenesis has not been investigated after stroke and anti-Nogo-A treatment. The goal of …

Critical Role Of C-Jun N-Terminal Kinase Signaling In Binge Alcohol-Driven Atrial Arrhythmic Remodeling, Jiajie Yan Yan
Dissertations
Holiday Heart Syndrome (HHS) is cardiac arrhythmia induced by binge alcohol consumption, a drinking pattern affects 38 million adults in our society. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequently diagnosed arrhythmia in HHS and causes significant morbidity and mortality. Despite the intensive prevention effort nationwide, the binge drinking population keeps rising. However, no effective treatment strategies are available for binge drinking induced AF due to the unknown underlying mechanisms. In this thesis, I aim to elucidate the mechanisms of binge alcohol-promoted atrial arrhythmogenicity by using a mouse model of repeated binge alcohol exposure established in the Ai Lab.

In Search Of Environmental Sustainability At The Base Of The Pyramid, Mark Heuer, Nancy E. Landrum
In Search Of Environmental Sustainability At The Base Of The Pyramid, Mark Heuer, Nancy E. Landrum
School of Environmental Sustainability: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This paper proposes a revision to Hart and Sharma’s 2004 model for corporate engagement with the base of the pyramid (BoP) by making the BoP community and the natural environment, not the firm, the central focus for engagement. The revised model proposes that core stakeholders must include the BoP community, the poor, weak, and illiterate, as they can benefit most from the community collective action model presented herein to address sustainability in the natural environment. These are the core stakeholders rather than fringe stakeholders, as indicated in the Hart and Sharma model. Our model recognizes the legitimacy of the firm …

Nuancing Human Rights Discourse And Practice: Perspectives From Myanmar, Amy Marie Argenal
Doctoral Dissertations
Through a participatory action research project with human rights activists in Myanmar, this study builds on discourse around inherent power imbalances in international human rights work by highlighting voices often left out of the human rights discourse. Using postcolonial and third world feminist frameworks, this research offers analysis of ten research participants’ narratives on their relationship with human rights discourse and a discussion of their practice. By looking at questions of how community activists from Myanmar engaged in a human rights discourse, the study offers nuanced understandings and critical analysis of how and why certain activists will embrace or reject …

Jeremiad Or Weapon Of Words?: The Power Of Emotive Language In Supreme Court Dissents, Amanda C. Bryan, Eve M. Ringsmuth
Political Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Unable to directly control the policy articulated by the Supreme Court, dissenting justices are faced with the challenge of finding alternative ways to pursue their policy goals. We argue that one strategy available to them is to use their power over the language of a dissenting opinion to increase the media attention paid to a case. Our results show that cases with negative dissents attract more media coverage, which creates a variety of mechanisms through which a dissenter’s policy preferences could be realized, such as inducing Congress to take action, influencing public debate on the issue, and provoking further litigation. …
