The Cultural Significance Of Buddha Representations From Bangkok In A Japanese Buddhist Historic Site: A Case Study Of Nittaiji Temple Of Japan, Vannaporn Phongpheng Jan 2016

The Cultural Significance Of Buddha Representations From Bangkok In A Japanese Buddhist Historic Site: A Case Study Of Nittaiji Temple Of Japan, Vannaporn Phongpheng

Asian Review

The image of Bangkok as a "Buddhist City" in Asian countries was propagated through the cultural diplomacy of King Chulalongkorn. In the case of Japan, Nittaiji Temple in Nagoya is the representative of a Thai-Japanese relationship developed from such a Buddhist idea. Much iconic Buddhist art was created to symbolically present Thai-Japanese Buddhist relations. Today, this temple is an iconic Buddhist attraction in Nagoya City because of the enshrinement of a Buddha image and Buddha relics given by the state of Thailand as well as because of the good management by Thailand and Japan to develop this relationship. This study …

The Sufficiency Economy Philosophy Beyond Thailand: Sustainable Development Challenges In A Neo-Liberal World, Justin John Shone

Asian Review

The transition from socialism to state capitalism in the Lao PDR's socio-economic development has not as yet entirely resulted in the abandonment of the Suffi ciency Economy Philosophy (SEP)-like "ethically-based" development policies but today these policies struggle to gain traction alongside the confl icting conventional development polices of the very infl uential Lao PDR development partners. This research determined the positioning of the SEP and its application beyond Thailand in Lao PDR and involved a qualitative research methodology, included extensive literature reviews, direct observations, visits to SEP training centers and more than 70 semi-structured interviews. The research confirmed the international …

A Hybrid Law Model For The Management Of Waste Electrical And Electronic Equipment: A Case Of The New Draft Law In Thailand, Panate Manomaivibool, Sujitra Vassanadumrongdee

Applied Environmental Research

Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has been high on the environmental policy agenda of many countries due to its rapidly increasing volume and concerns over its toxicity and the critical metals it holds. To date, 59 countries have passed laws for WEEE management (ex-cluding State level legislation in the USA and Canada). Most of these laws are based on the principle of extended producer responsibility (EPR) but their treatment of allocation of respon-sibility and system operation differ considerably. This study reviews the implementation models of EPR which are classified into two broad groups: producer compliance schemes and governmental funds. …

The Econometric Model Of Ship-Generated Operational Waste: The Underlying Tool For Waste Management In Container Port, Chalermpong Senarak

Applied Environmental Research

Marine pollution prevention through adequate provision of garbage reception facility (GRF) is a legal obligation of every port. According to MARPOL 73/78, each port authority should explore ways to increase its ability to prevent marine pollution from ship-generated waste. The paper supports this legal requirement by developing an econometric model for estimating the amount of operational waste delivered at GRF. The multiple regression with ordinary least squares technique was used to analyze the relationship between the amount of operational waste per month and two explanatory variables - size of ship and travelling distance from the last port of discharge. Data …

Structural Basis For Lipid-And Calmodulin-Mediated Akt Activation In Breast Cancer Cells, Constance Agamasu Jan 2016

Structural Basis For Lipid-And Calmodulin-Mediated Akt Activation In Breast Cancer Cells, Constance Agamasu

All ETDs from UAB

Growth and survival signals initiated at the cell surface by receptor-ligand interactions often involve a downstream activation of Akt, a serine/threonine kinase critical in regulating cell survival, apoptosis and oncogenesis. Hyper-activation of Akt is a common tumorigenic event, thereby making the Akt activation pathway a prime target for cancer therapy. The translocation of Akt to the plasma membrane (PM) for phosphorylation is a critical step in the Akt activation pathway. It has been established that membrane binding of Akt is mediated by direct interactions between its pleckstrin homology domain (PHD) and membrane lipid phosphatidylinositol 3,4,5-trisphosphate [PI(3,4,5)P3]. There is now emerging …

Mechanisms Of Innate And Adaptive Immune Function In Parkinson Disease, Heather Elizabeth Allen Jan 2016

Mechanisms Of Innate And Adaptive Immune Function In Parkinson Disease, Heather Elizabeth Allen

All ETDs from UAB

Parkinson disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative movement disorder characterized pathologically by loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra and aggregation of alpha-synuclein (α-syn) into large inclusions. The association of mutations and gene multiplications in SNCA, the gene encoding α-syn, with rare familial forms of PD led to the discovery that α-syn plays a key role in the pathogenesis of PD. The mechanism by which α-syn mediates its toxicity remains uncertain. A leading hypothesis states that the toxic effects of α-syn are mediated by activation of both the innate and adaptive immune systems within the central nervous system. Supporting …

All ETDs from UAB

Membrane proteins imperative for cell signal transduction, G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) are critical for drug discovery. Unfortunately, sufficient amounts of quantifiable protein cannot be produced using existing expression systems. Nature has an ideal solution—rhodopsin; the GPCR rhodopsin is efficiently and abundantly expressed in rod outer segments (ROS) of photoreceptor cells. As part of this study, human embryonic stem cells (hESC) were cultured on extracellular matrix (ECM) derived substrates and differentiated towards a photoreceptor lineage using conventional basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and novel NM23 growth factor methods. NM23 is the natural ligand of MUC1*, which is surface accessible on stem …

“Yellow Crowfoot In The Pond,/Not Lotus, Not Lily”: Mapping The River, Mapping Voices, Pamela J. Rader Jan 2016

“Yellow Crowfoot In The Pond,/Not Lotus, Not Lily”: Mapping The River, Mapping Voices, Pamela J. Rader

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This paper examines the prosody of Chin’s eponymous poem, "The Phoenix Gone, The Terrace Empty," through an eco-critical lens. While it does not dismiss the hybrid cultural influences of the poem, it focuses on the ways the non-human agents, or the figures in the poem’s landscape, “speak.” Poetry, like the poem’s terraced gardens, traces tension between the controlling human forces experienced by the narrating female I personas and the natural world’s affective inclinations.

Domestic Violence In Lac Su’S I Love Yous Are For White People: A Sociological Criticism Approach, Quan-Manh Ha Jan 2016

Domestic Violence In Lac Su’S I Love Yous Are For White People: A Sociological Criticism Approach, Quan-Manh Ha

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This article employs sociological criticism to examine domestic violence, parenting, and communication behavior in Lac Su’s Vietnamese American memoir. The book debunks the seemingly positive myth of Asian Americans as a model minority, substantiates certain negative stereotypes of Asian men, and challenges some of the classic Asian values that apparently have shaped the Asian American identity. I argue that Su’s memoir is a critique of structural inequalities, urban poverty, unemployment, inaccessibility to a support network, and the intersection between class, gender, and race in the contexts of war and its aftermath.

The Trouble With White Feminism: Whiteness, Digital Feminism And The Intersectional Internet, Jessie Daniels Jan 2016

The Trouble With White Feminism: Whiteness, Digital Feminism And The Intersectional Internet, Jessie Daniels

Publications and Research

In August, 2013 Mikki Kendall, writer and pop culture analyst, started the hashtag #SolidarityisforWhiteWomen as a form of cyberfeminist activism directed at the predominantly white feminist activists and bloggers at sites like Feministing, Jezebel and Pandagon who failed to acknowledge the racist, sexist behavior of one their frequent contributors. Kendall’s hashtag activism quickly began trending and reignited a discussion about the trouble with white feminism. A number of journalists have excoriated Kendall specifically, and women of color more generally, for contributing to a “toxic” form of feminism. Yet what remains unquestioned in these journalistic accounts and in the scholarship to …

Police Bias In The Enforcement Of Drug Crimes: Evidence From Low Priority Laws, Gregory Deangelo, R. Kaj Gittings, Amanda Ross, Anne Walker Jan 2016

Police Bias In The Enforcement Of Drug Crimes: Evidence From Low Priority Laws, Gregory Deangelo, R. Kaj Gittings, Amanda Ross, Anne Walker

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We consider the impact of adoption of a low priority initiative in some jurisdictions within Los Angeles County on police behavior. Low priority initiatives instruct police to make the enforcement of low level marijuana possession offenses their “lowest priority.” Using detailed data from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and a difference-indifferences strategy, we show that the mandate resulted in a lower arrest rate for misdemeanor marijuana possession in adopting areas. However, the lower relative arrest rate is driven by a spike in the arrest rate in areas not affected by the mandate rather than a reduction in adopting areas.

Does The Presence Of Professional Football Cause Crime In A City? Evidence From Pontiac, Michigan, Hyunwoong Pyun, Joshua C. Hall Jan 2016

Does The Presence Of Professional Football Cause Crime In A City? Evidence From Pontiac, Michigan, Hyunwoong Pyun, Joshua C. Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

We empirically explore the relationship between the National Football League (NFL) and crime using daily panel data from Detroit. We exploit the natural experiment of the Detroit Lions movement from Pontiac MI to downtown Detroit in 2002 to examine the impact of NFL games on crime in a jurisdiction. Pontiac is used as a treatment city and other suburban cities are used as a comparison group. Employing a triple difference-in-difference approach, we find little to no change in crime on a home game day in Pontiac compared to other suburban cities. There is no difference in crime between the football …

Designing Policies To Spur Economic Growth: How Regional Scientists Can Contribute To Future Policy Development And Evaluation, Carlianne Patrick, Amanda Ross, Heather Stephens Jan 2016

Designing Policies To Spur Economic Growth: How Regional Scientists Can Contribute To Future Policy Development And Evaluation, Carlianne Patrick, Amanda Ross, Heather Stephens

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

Policymakers at all levels of government try to design policies to promote economic growth. Many of these policies have a goal of attracting new businesses to an area, as new businesses are considered a key driver of local economic growth. An emerging literature suggests that such policies have heterogeneous effects on economic growth, both in terms of how the effect of the same policy may vary across locations as well as how different policies spur different types of growth. In this chapter, we discuss the insights provided by the existing literature on the effect of government policy on local economic …

Tax Expenditures: A Review And Analysis, Joshua C. Hall

Economics Faculty Working Papers Series

This paper originally appeared as a policy report for the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress. While these publications are in the public domain, they often disappear when the chair of the committee changes and this report is no exception. As this publication is no longer available in print or electronic form, I have provided this version for those interested in obtaining a copy of the paper. At the time of publication I was a policy analyst for the Joint Economic Committee working for the Vice Chairman Jim Saxton.
