Is Accounting For Stock Options Manipulated Before And After An Initial Public Offering?, Natalie Marie Flood Jan 2016

Is Accounting For Stock Options Manipulated Before And After An Initial Public Offering?, Natalie Marie Flood

Honors Theses

Stock option accounting is an area in financial statements that requires substantial estimates and management discretion. Previous research in the area of stock option accounting has found that valuations of options and subsequent accounting methods have been incorrectly stated to aid a company to look financially stronger. Companies that are about to undergo an initial public offering have the most incentive to incorrectly state the value of their options. However, all of these studies have used financial data from financial statements dated before 2004. This is significant because FASB Standard 123(R) (2004) and the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (2000) have both been …

Nonlinear Optical Observation Of Coherent Acoustic Dirac Plasmons In Thin-Film Topological Insulators, Yuri D. Glinka, Sercan Babakiray, Trent A. Johnson, Mikel B. Holcomb, David Lederman Jan 2016

Nonlinear Optical Observation Of Coherent Acoustic Dirac Plasmons In Thin-Film Topological Insulators, Yuri D. Glinka, Sercan Babakiray, Trent A. Johnson, Mikel B. Holcomb, David Lederman

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Low-energy collective electronic excitations exhibiting sound-like linear dispersion have been intensively studied both experimentally and theoretically for a long time. However, coherent acoustic plasmon modes appearing in time-domain measurements are rarely observed due to Landau damping by the single-particle continua. Here we report on the observation of coherent acoustic Dirac plasmon (CADP) modes excited in indirectly (electrostatically) opposite-surface coupled films of the topological insulator Bi2Se3. Using transient secondharmonic generation, a technique capable of independently monitoring the in-plane and out-of-plane electron dynamics in the films, the GHz-range oscillations were observed without corresponding oscillations in the transient reflectivity. These oscillations were assigned …

Check The Head: Emergency Ultrasound Diagnosis Of Fetal Anencephaly, John W. Hall Iv, Ba, Nicolas Denne Md, Joseph J. Minardi Md, Debra Williams Ms, Bj Balcik Md

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Background Early pregnancy complaints in emergency medicine are common. Emergency physicians (EP) increasingly employ ultrasound (US) in the evaluation of these complaints. As a result, it is likely that rare and important diagnoses will be encountered. We report a case of fetal anencephaly diagnosed by bedside emergency US in a patient presenting with first-trimester vaginal bleeding.

Case Report A 33-year-old patient at 10 weeks gestation presented with vaginal bleeding. After initial history and physical examination, a bedside US was performed. The EP noted the abnormal appearance of the fetal cranium and anencephaly was suspected. This finding was confirmed by a …

Subject-Specific Biomechanics Of Trunk: Musculoskeletal Scaling, Internal Loads And Intradiscal Pressure Estimation, F. Ghezelbash, A. Shirazi-Adl, N. Arjmand, Z. El-Ouaaid, A. Plamondon

Études primaires

Development of a subject-specific computational musculoskeletal trunk model (accounting for age, sex, body weight and body height), estimation of muscle forces and internal loads as well as subsequent validation by comparison with measured intradiscal pressure in various lifting tasks are novel, important and challenging. The objective of the present study is twofold. First, it aims to update and personalize the passive and active structures in an existing musculoskeletal kinematics-driven finite element model. The scaling scheme used an existing imaging database and biomechanical principles to adjust muscle geometries/cross-sectional-areas and passive joint geometry/properties in accordance with subjects’ sex, age, body weight and …

An Analysis Of Accuracy Using Logistic Regression And Time Series, Edwin Baidoo, Jennifer L. Priestley Jan 2016

An Analysis Of Accuracy Using Logistic Regression And Time Series, Edwin Baidoo, Jennifer L. Priestley

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

This paper analyzes the accuracy rates for logistic regression and time series models. It also examines a relatively new performance index that takes into consideration the business assumptions of credit markets. Although prior research has focused on evaluation metrics, such as AUC and Gini index, this new measure has a more intuitive interpretation for various managers and decision makers and can be applied to both Logistic and Time Series models.

A Comparison Of Machine Learning Techniques And Logistic Regression Method For The Prediction Of Past-Due Amount, Jie Hao, Jennifer L. Priestley Jan 2016

A Comparison Of Machine Learning Techniques And Logistic Regression Method For The Prediction Of Past-Due Amount, Jie Hao, Jennifer L. Priestley

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

The aim of this paper to predict a past-due amount using traditional and machine learning techniques: Logistic Analysis, k-Nearest Neighbor and Random Forest. The dataset to be analyzed is provided by Equifax, which contains 305 categories of financial information from more than 11,787,287 unique businesses from 2006 to 2014. The big challenge is how to handle with the big and noisy real world datasets. Among the three techniques, the results show that Logistic Regression Method is the best in terms of predictive accuracy and type I errors.

Application Of Isotonic Regression In Predicting Business Risk Scores, Linh T. Le, Jennifer L. Priestley Jan 2016

Application Of Isotonic Regression In Predicting Business Risk Scores, Linh T. Le, Jennifer L. Priestley

Published and Grey Literature from PhD Candidates

An isotonic regression model fits an isotonic function of the explanatory variables to estimate the expectation of the response variable. In other words, as the function increases, the estimated expectation of the response must be non-decreasing. With this characteristic, isotonic regression could be a suitable option to analyze and predict business risk scores. A current challenge of isotonic regression is the decrease of performance when the model is fitted in a large data set e.g. more than four or five dimensions. This paper attempts to apply isotonic regression models into prediction of business risk scores using a large data set …

Some Results On Injectivity And Multistationarity In Chemical Reaction Networks, Murad Banaji, Casian Pantea Jan 2016

Some Results On Injectivity And Multistationarity In Chemical Reaction Networks, Murad Banaji, Casian Pantea

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The goal of this paper is to gather and develop some necessary and sufficient criteria for injectivity and multistationarity in vector fields associated with a chemical reaction network under a variety of more or less general assumptions on the nature of the network and the reaction rates. The results are primarily linear algebraic or matrix-theoretic, with some graph-theoretic results also mentioned. Several results appear in, or are close to, results in the literature. Here, we emphasise the connections between the results, and where possible, present elementary proofs which rely solely on basic linear algebra and calculus. A number of examples …

A Continuous Tale On Continuous And Separately Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski Jan 2016

A Continuous Tale On Continuous And Separately Continuous Functions, Krzysztof Ciesielski

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Assume that you have developed a good set of tools allowing you to decide which real functions of one real variable, f : R → R, are continuous. (Q): How can such a tool-box be utilized to decide on the continuity of the functions g : R n → R of n real variables? This is one of the questions which must be faced by any student taking multivariable calculus. Of course, such a student is following the footsteps of many generations of mathematicians, which were, and still are, struggling with the same general question. The aim of this article …

Mapping Forest Health Using Spectral And Textural Information Extracted From Spot-5 Satellite Images, Jinghui Meng, Shiming Li, Wei Wang, Qingwang Liu, Shiqin Xie, Wu Ma

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Forest health is an important variable that we need to monitor for forest management decision making. However, forest health is difficult to assess and monitor based merely on forest field surveys. In the present study, we first derived a comprehensive forest health indicator using 15 forest stand attributes extracted from forest inventory plots. Second, Pearson’s correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between the forest health indicator and the spectral and textural measures extracted from SPOT-5 images. Third, all-subsets regression was performed to build the predictive model by including the statistically significant image-derived measures as independent variables. Finally, the …

Nucleophile Promoted Gold Redox Catalysis With Diazonium: C-Br, C-S And C-P Bond Formation Through Catalytic Sandmeyer Coupling, Haihui Peng, Rong Cai, Chang Xu, Hao Chen, Xiaodong Shi

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Gold-catalyzed C-heteroatom (C–X) coupling reactions are evaluated without using sacrificial oxidants. Vital to the success of this methodology is the nucleophile-assisted activation of aryldiazonium salts, which could be an effective oxidant for converting Au(I) to Au(III) even without the addition of an assisting ligand or photocatalyst. By accelerating the reaction kinetics to outcompete C–C homo-coupling or diazonium dediazoniation, gold-catalyzed Sandmeyer reactions were achieved with different nucleophiles, forming C–Br, C–S and C–P bonds in high yields and selectivities.

Recent Afforestation In The Iowa River And Vorskla River Basins: A Comparative Trends Analysis, Yury Chendev, Jason Hubbart, Edgar Terekhin, Anthony Lupo, Tom Sauer, C. Burras

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Afforestation trends were compared between two continentally-distinct, yet similar ecoregions to characterize similarities or differences in forest advancement due to natural and anthropogenic forcings. Temporal changes in forest cover were analyzed using high resolution aerial and satellite photographs for Southeast Iowa, USA, and satellite photographs for the western Belgorod Oblast, Russia. An increase in forested area was shown to occur over a 44-year period from 1970–2014 in Iowa where afforestation was reflected by the aggregation of smaller forest units. In the Belgorod region the opposite occurred in that there was an increase in the number of smaller forested units. The …

Automated Classification Of Vowel Category And Speaker Type In The High-Frequency Spectrum, Jeremy J. Donai, Saeid Motiian, Gianfranco Doretto

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The high-frequency region of vowel signals (above the third formant or F3) has received little research attention. Recent evidence, however, has documented the perceptual utility of high-frequency information in the speech signal above the traditional frequency bandwidth known to contain important cues for speech and speaker recognition. The purpose of this study was to determine if high-pass filtered vowels could be separated by vowel category and speaker type in a supervised learning framework. Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs) were extracted from productions of six vowel categories produced by two male, two female, and two child speakers. Results revealed that the …

Microtubule Modification Influences Cellular Response To Amyloid-Β Exposure, Nicole Shamitko-Klingensmith, Jonathan W. Boyd, Justin Legleiter Jan 2016

Microtubule Modification Influences Cellular Response To Amyloid-Β Exposure, Nicole Shamitko-Klingensmith, Jonathan W. Boyd, Justin Legleiter

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

During the normal aging process, cytoskeletal changes such as a reduction in density or disruption of cytoskeletal components occur that can affect neuronal function. As aging is the biggest risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), this study sought to determine how microtubule (MT) modification influences cellular response upon exposure to β-amyloid1-42 (Aβ1-42), which is implicated in AD. The MT networks of hypothalamic GT1-7 neurons were modified by common disrupting or stabilizing drugs, and then the physical and mechanical properties of the modified neurons were determined. The MT modified neurons were then exposed to Aβ1-42 and the ability of the neurons …

Northern Long-Eared Bat Day-Roosting And Prescribed Fire In The Central Appalachians, Usa, W. Mark Ford, Alexander Silvis, Joshua B. Johnson, John W. Edwards, Milu Karp

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The northern long-eared bat (Myotis septentrionalis Trovessart) is a cavity-roosting species that forages in cluttered upland and riparian forests throughout the oak-dominated Appalachian and Central Hardwoods regions. Common prior to white-nose syndrome, the population of this bat species has declined to functional extirpation in some regions in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, including portions of the central Appalachians. Our long-term research in the central Appalachians has shown that maternity colonies of this species form non-random assorting networks in patches of suitable trees that result from longand short-term forest disturbance processes, and that roost loss can occur with these disturbances. Following two …

"What Made Me Continue Was Stubbornness": Perspectives Of Swedish Women At The Beginning Of Their Academic Career In Geography, Martina Angela Caretta, Natasha Alexander Webster

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The rise of neoliberalism is creating inequalities for women as they balance their private lives and career trajectories. Geography as a middle sized discipline bridging the social and physical sciences offers insights into the ways neoliberal policies are felt by early career women (ECW). Using a life course model, this study presents the results of a workshop which sought to explore the ways in which women geographers, in Sweden, perceive and experience obstacles in their career advancement and which coping strategies they put in place to overcome those. The results show the blurring of the ECW ́s work and private …

Effect Of Spatial Inhomogeneities On The Membrane Surface On Receptor Dimerization And Signal Initiation, Romica Kerketta, Adam M. Halasz, Mara P. Steinkamp, Bridget S. Wilson, Jeremy S. Edwards Jan 2016

Effect Of Spatial Inhomogeneities On The Membrane Surface On Receptor Dimerization And Signal Initiation, Romica Kerketta, Adam M. Halasz, Mara P. Steinkamp, Bridget S. Wilson, Jeremy S. Edwards

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Important signal transduction pathways originate on the plasma membrane, where microdomains may transiently entrap diffusing receptors. This results in a non-random distribution of receptors even in the resting state, which can be visualized as “clusters” by high resolution imaging methods. Here, we explore how spatial in-homogeneities in the plasma membrane might influence the dimerization and phosphorylation status of ErbB2 and ErbB3, two receptor tyrosine kinases that preferentially heterodimerize and are often co-expressed in cancer. This theoretical study is based upon spatial stochastic simulations of the two-dimensional membrane landscape, where variables include differential distributions and overlap of transient confinement zones (“domains”) …

Career Expectancy Of Physicians Active In Patient Care: Evidence From Mississippi, Jamie Boydstun, Jeralynn S. Cossman Jan 2016

Career Expectancy Of Physicians Active In Patient Care: Evidence From Mississippi, Jamie Boydstun, Jeralynn S. Cossman

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Introduction: Physician shortages in the USA, an issue that has been particularly challenging in Mississippi, have been a concern among health scholars and policy makers for several decades. Physician shortages hinder residents from easily obtaining routine care, potentially magnifying health disparities. This study examines physician career life expectancy, or how long physicians typically practice, in Mississippi. Methods: Data on Mississippi’s physician population actively involved between 2007 and 2011 were obtained from the Mississippi State Board of Medical Licensure. Abridged career life tables were constructed for all Mississippi physicians and population subgroups based on practice specialty, gender, race, urban–rural practice, and …

Convergence Of Exterior Solutions To Radial Cauchy Solutions For ∂ 2 T U − C 2∆U = 0, Helge Kristian Jenssen, Charis Tsikkou Jan 2016

Convergence Of Exterior Solutions To Radial Cauchy Solutions For ∂ 2 T U − C 2∆U = 0, Helge Kristian Jenssen, Charis Tsikkou

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Consider the Cauchy problem for the 3-D linear wave equation ∂ 2 t U − c 2∆U = 0 with radial initial data U(0, x) = Φ(x) = ϕ(|x|), Ut(0, x) = Ψ(x) = ψ(|x|). A standard result states that U belongs to C([0, T]; Hs (R3 )) whenever (Φ, Ψ) ∈ Hs × Hs−1 (R3 ). In this article we are interested in the question of how U can be realized as a limit of solutions to initial-boundary value problems on the exterior of vanishing balls Bε about the origin. We note that, as the solutions we compare are …

A Search For Rotating Radio Transients And Fast Radio Bursts In The Parkes High-Latitude Pulsar Survey, A. Rane, D. R. Lorimer, S. D. Bates, N. Mcmann, M. A. Mclaughlin, K. Rajwade

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Discoveries of rotating radio transients and fast radio bursts (FRBs) in pulsar surveys suggest that further transient sources await discovery in archival data sets. Here we report on a single-pulse search for dispersed radio bursts over a wide range of Galactic latitudes ($|b| < 60^{\circ}$) in data previously searched for periodic sources by Burgay et al. We detected 20 of the 42 pulsars reported by Burgay et al. and one radio transient. No FRBs were discovered in this survey. Taking into account this null result, along with other recent surveys at Parkes, and correcting for detection sensitivity based on the search algorithms used in the analyses, we find that the all-sky FRB event rate for sources with peak fluxes $> 0.1$ Jy to be ${\cal R} = 3.3^{+5.0}_{-2.5} \times 10^3$ FRBs day$^{-1}$ sky$^{-1}$, where the uncertainties represent a $99\%$ confidence interval. While this rate is several times lower than inferred from previous studies, it is consistent with all systematic FRB searches at Parkes to date and does not require the need to postulate a dearth of FRBs …

Comparing Tree-Ring And Permanent Plot Estimates Of Aboveground Net Primary Production In Three Eastern U.S. Forests, Alex Dye, Audrey Barker Plotkin, Daniel Bishop, Neil Pederson, Benjamin Poulter, Amy Hessl

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Forests account for a large portion of sequestered carbon, much of which is stored as wood in trees. The rate of carbon accumulation in aboveground plant material, or aboveground net primary productivity (aNPP), quantifies annual to decadal variations in forest carbon sequestration. Permanent plots are often used to estimate aNPP but are usually not annually resolved and take many years to develop a long data set. Tree rings are a unique and infrequently used source for measuring aNPP, and benefit from fine spatial (individual trees) and temporal (annual) resolution. Because of this precision, tree rings are complementary to permanent plots …

Synergistic Effects Of Climate Change And Grazing On Net Primary Production Of Mongolian Grasslands, Shree R. S. Dangal, Hanqin Tian, Chaoqun Lu, Shufen Pan, Neil Pederson, Amy Hessl

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In arid and semi-arid regions, grassland degradation has become a major environmental and economic problem, but little information is available on the response of grassland productivity to both climate change and grazing intensity. By developing a grazing module in a process-based ecosystem model, the dynamic land ecosystem model (DLEM), we explore the roles of climate change, elevated CO2, and varying grazing intensities in affecting aboveground net primary productivity (ANPP) across different grassland sites in Mongolia. Our results show that both growing season precipitation totals and average temperature exert important controls on annual ANPP across six sites over a precipitation gradient, …
