Escape From Boxland, Barret Schloerke, Hadley Wickham, Dianne Cook, Heike Hofmann
The R Journal
A library of common geometric shapes can be used to train our brains for understanding data structure in high-dimensional Euclidean space. This article describes the methods for producing cubes, spheres, simplexes, and tori in multiple dimensions. It also describes new ways to define and generate high-dimensional tori. The algorithms are described, critical code chunks are given, and a large collection of generated data are provided. These are available in the R package geozoo, and selected movies and images, are available on the GeoZoo web site (http://schloerke.github.io/geozoo/)

An Introduction To Principal Surrogate Evaluation With The Pseval Package, Michael C. Sachs, Erin E. Gabriel
The R Journal
We describe a new package called pseval that implements the core methods for the evaluation of principal surrogates in a single clinical trial. It provides a flexible interface for defining models for the risk given treatment and the surrogate, the models for integration over the missing counterfactual surrogate responses, and the estimation methods. Estimated maximum likelihood and pseudo-score can be used for estimation, and the bootstrap for inference. A variety of post-estimation methods are provided, including print, summary, plot, and testing. We summarize the main statistical methods that are implemented in the package and illustrate its use from the perspective …

Variants Of Simple Correspondence Analysis, Rosaria Lombardo, Eric J. Beh
The R Journal
This paper presents the R package CAvariants (Lombardo and Beh, 2017). The package performs six variants of correspondence analysis on a two-way contingency table. The main function that shares the same name as the package– CAvariants– allows the user to choose (via a series of input parameters) from six different correspondence analysis procedures. These include the classical approach to (symmetrical) correspondence analysis, singly ordered correspondence analysis, doubly ordered correspondence analysis, non symmetrical correspondence analysis, singly ordered non symmetrical correspondence analysis and doubly ordered non symmetrical correspondence analysis. The code provides the flexibility for constructing either a classical correspondence plot or …

Models of cancer progression provide insights on the order of accumulation of genetic alterations during cancer development. Algorithms to infer such models from the currently available mutational profiles collected from different cancer patients (cross-sectional data) have been defined in the literature since late the 90s. These algorithms differ in the way they extract a graphical model of the events modelling the progression, e.g., somatic mutations or copy-number alterations.
TRONCO is an R package for TRanslational ONcology which provides a series of functions to assist the user in the analysis of cross-sectional genomic data and, in particular, it implements …
Multiplencc: Inverse Probability Weighting Of Nested Case-Control Data, Nathalie C. Støer, Sven Ove Samuelsen
Multiplencc: Inverse Probability Weighting Of Nested Case-Control Data, Nathalie C. Støer, Sven Ove Samuelsen
The R Journal
Reuse of controls from nested case-control designs can increase efficiency in many situations, for instance with competing risks or in other multiple endpoints situations. The matching between cases and controls must be broken when controls are to be used for other endpoints. A weighted analysis can then be performed to take care of the biased sampling from the cohort. We present the R package multipleNCC for reuse of controls in nested case-control studies by inverse probability weighting of the partial likelihood. The package handles right-censored, left-truncated and additionally matched data, and varying numbers of sampled controls and the whole analysis …

Mechanism Of Resistance, Gene Flow, And Integrated Management Of Ragweeds (Ambrosia) In Nebraska, Zahoor Ahmad Ganie
Mechanism Of Resistance, Gene Flow, And Integrated Management Of Ragweeds (Ambrosia) In Nebraska, Zahoor Ahmad Ganie
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) and giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida L.) are native annual broadleaf weeds in the United States found in diverse agroecosystems, roadsides, and wastelands. They are economically important weed species in the Midwest and sources of pollen allergies. Confirmation of glyphosate-resistant (GR) common and giant ragweed in Nebraska justified the need to determine the mechanism of resistance, dispersal of resistance genes via pollen, and to develop an integrated management program. The objectives of this research were to: 1) determine the mechanism of glyphosate resistance in a common ragweed biotype from Nebraska; 2) evaluate the effect …
A Generic Benchmark For A Mini-Split Heat Pump System, Yuchen Wang
A Generic Benchmark For A Mini-Split Heat Pump System, Yuchen Wang
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) accounts for half of the building energy consumption in the U.S where Mini-Split Heat Pumps (MSHPs) are an emerging type of HVAC system. Their utilization has greatly increased by 34% from 2009 to 2013 and high potential EER is recognized for MSHPs. However, there is limited research involving MSHPs systems, and there is no generic benchmark for system testing and modeling. The available simulation tools such as VapCyc, GreatLab, and CYCLE_D are either too complicated, difficult to access, or not freely available. Therefore, an accurate and public share generic benchmark is essential and will …
Appraisal Of The Sustainability Of Compressed Stabilized Earthen Masonry, Elena Claire Hoff
Appraisal Of The Sustainability Of Compressed Stabilized Earthen Masonry, Elena Claire Hoff
Durham School of Architectural Engineering and Construction: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Compressed stabilized earthen block (CSEB) masonry presents an environmentally and economically sustainable alternative to conventional residential construction materials such as clay brick masonry or concrete masonry (CMU). Earthen masonry is locally sourced and manufactured on site, thus minimizing costs associated with raw material extraction and transportation. Furthermore, CSEB requires very little use of electricity and water during both the manufacture and construction processes and it has excellent thermal resistivity while in use, allowing for additional cost and energy savings during most phases of its life cycle. Analyzing the life cycle trade-offs in a comparative study between CSEB and clay brick …

Review Of Estimation Of Parameters For Animal Populations: A Primer For The Rest Of Us By Larkin A. Powell And George A. Gale, Max Post Van Der Burg
The Prairie Naturalist
“Me? A modeler? Never!” This is the opening challenge of the book, Estimation of Parameters for Animal Populations: A Primer for the Rest of Us, by Larkin Powell and George Gale. I say “challenge” because I think this book attempts to challenge the misconception that quantitative methods are out of reach for most biologists and wildlife scientists. When many of us attend college or graduate school to study wildlife science there’s a sense that, at some point, there will be math. But it appears that the attitude of many students toward this reality is to simply suffer through the …

Technology Adoption By California Central Coast Contractors, Nicholas A. English
Technology Adoption By California Central Coast Contractors, Nicholas A. English
Construction Management
Technology is trending in Construction, but it is unclear if smaller contractors have kept up with these trends like larger national companies have. This survey of San Luis Obispo County specialty and general contractors queried technology adoption, specific software use, estimator age, and opinions of various estimating attributes. It found that the majority of contractors use traditional estimating and quantity takeoff methods, the majority of contractors are 31 years old or older, and that local estimators value experience and knowledge as opposed to computer expertise. Local contractors recognize the value technology can provide, but have not adopted it in a …
Construction Of A Chicken Coop For Use By An Early Education Facility, Luke Cypress
Construction Of A Chicken Coop For Use By An Early Education Facility, Luke Cypress
Construction Management
There is a demand in the early education field for methods of exposing early learners to where our food comes from and how it’s produced. An excellent source of this exposure is commonly utilized in an onsite chicken-coop. These coops are in essence working farms, producing eggs and in some cases meat. While coops are not prohibitively expensive they often fall outside the scope of normal operating or educational budgets and can be difficult to fund. The purpose of this project was to identify a school that could use and benefit from a coop at no cost to the school. …

Fall Field Report, August–November 2016, W. Ross Silcock
Fall Field Report, August–November 2016, W. Ross Silcock
Nebraska Bird Review
As usual, there was quite a bit to chew over in the Fall Seasonal Report, although it was generally a pretty uneventful season, especially among waterfowl and shorebirds. The mild fall allowed some good counts to occur, such as the 20+ Surf Scoters, 465 meadowlarks in Garfield Co, and at least 11 White-winged Doves.
First State Records are hard to come by; amazing was an Anna's Hummingbird that showed up in the Manning Family's central Omaha yard. How many pass through the yards of non-birders undetected? Always a mind-boggling thought. A 3rd state record Costa's Hummingbird came to light from …

Our records indicate Betty became a member in 1991. Her talents and qualifications (CPA and Nebraska's first female Certified Management Accountant) were soon recognized. She became NOU Treasurer in 1994, a position held until her death, except for a 3-year hiatus when her employment with Enron took her to Houston, Texas. NOU has benefited in a number of other ways from Betty's organizational skills and attention to …
Edible Insects As A Source Of Food Allergens, Lee Palmer
Edible Insects As A Source Of Food Allergens, Lee Palmer
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Increasing global population increasingly limited by resources has spurred interest in novel food sources. Insects may be an alternative food source in the near future, but consideration of insects as a food requires scrutiny due to risk of allergens. Currently, the insect Dactylopius coccus, known as cochineal, is used to produce carmine, a natural red pigment used in food, which has caused allergic reactions. This study investigated allergens of cochineal focusing on purification from the pigment. Mass spectrometry identified a previously described major allergen of cochineal and a tropomyosin, although further work is required.
Tropomyosin is a major cross-reactive allergen …

Models For Decanting Gaseous Fuel Tanks: Simulations With Gfssp Thermal Model, Kailash Kumar Jain Munoth
Models For Decanting Gaseous Fuel Tanks: Simulations With Gfssp Thermal Model, Kailash Kumar Jain Munoth
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Transport of fuel from distillation/storage plant to different parts of the world has always been challenging task for Engineers. Different methods have been proposed over the time for transporting fuel efficiently and at low cost which include Marine vessels, Pipelines, Rail Cars and Trucks. In order to transport useful amount of fuel in a reasonably sized tank, we have to liquefy it. While few fuels are easy to liquefy there are great number of fuels which liquefy only under extreme pressure/temperature conditions. Methane has a boiling point of -161.7°C at atmospheric pressure which means it has to be cooled to …
Modeling The Effects Of Tile Drain Placement On The Hydrologic Function Of Farmed Prairie Wetlands1, Brett Werner, John Tracy, W. Carter Johnson, Richard A. Voldseth, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, Bruce Millett
Modeling The Effects Of Tile Drain Placement On The Hydrologic Function Of Farmed Prairie Wetlands1, Brett Werner, John Tracy, W. Carter Johnson, Richard A. Voldseth, Glenn R. Guntenspergen, Bruce Millett
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
The early 2000s saw large increases in agricultural tile drainage in the eastern Dakotas of North America. Agricultural practices that drain wetlands directly are sometimes limited by wetland protection programs. Little is known about the impacts of tile drainage beyond the delineated boundaries of wetlands in upland catchments that may be in agricultural production. A series of experiments were conducted using the well-published model WETLANDSCAPE that revealed the potential for wetlands to have significantly shortened surface water inundation periods and lower mean depths when tile is placed in certain locations beyond the wetland boundary. Under the soil conditions found in …
The Artists Journey- Strolling The Edges Of The Universe, Mary P. Williams
The Artists Journey- Strolling The Edges Of The Universe, Mary P. Williams
Theses and Dissertations
Space exploration has always fascinated me, and so has the idea ( so far fictional) that humankind may someday encounter extraterrestrial life. My series of paintings and prints are a visual expression of the awe and wonder I feel as I follow our species’s unending drive to expand the boundaries of its known world.
But the unknown is not just out there in interstellar space. And there are other lifeforms to encounter right here on our own planet. Another series of my paintings documents Earth’s flora. Our ties to the microorganisms, animals, and plants on our planet, and the life …

Numerical Simulations Of Shock Waves Reflection And Interaction, Ligang Sun
Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this dissertation is to detect and study the phenomena of reflection of one shock wave and interaction of two shock waves using numerical methods. In theory, solutions of non-linear Euler equations of compressive inviscid gas dynamics in two dimensions can display various features including shock waves and rarefaction waves. To capture the shock waves properly, highly accurate numerical schemes are designed according to second order Lax-Wendroff method. In this thesis, three numerical experiments were designed to show the reflection and interaction phenomena. Firstly, one shock was formed due to the encounter of two high speed gas …
