Solving The Information Security & Privacy Crisis By Expanding The Scope Of Top Management Personal Liability, Charles Cresson Wood
Solving The Information Security & Privacy Crisis By Expanding The Scope Of Top Management Personal Liability, Charles Cresson Wood
Journal of Legislation
While information security and privacy losses are now spiraling out of control, and have been demonstrably shown to threaten national sovereignty, military superiority, industrial infrastructure order, national economic competitiveness, the solvency of major businesses, faith and trust in the Internet as a platform for modern commerce, as well as political stability, the U.S. Congress has nonetheless to date refused to seriously address the root cause of these threats. The root cause is a legally reinforced incentive system that encourages, and further entrenches, top management decisions that provide inadequate resources for, and inadequate top management attention to, information security and privacy …
Where Was Canada? The Canadian Military Contribution To The British Commonwealth Second World War Campaign In North Africa, Andrew Stewart
Where Was Canada? The Canadian Military Contribution To The British Commonwealth Second World War Campaign In North Africa, Andrew Stewart
Canadian Military History
The campaign fought by predominantly British Commonwealth forces in North Africa during the Second World War, in many respects, represented a final example of imperial solidarity and unity. Whilst the United States participated during the final stages prior to the surrender of Axis forces in May 1943, it was Britain and its Empire that provided most of the resources and manpower and contested most of the battles. Canada, however, played only a relatively minor part and this paper seeks to examine the associated decision-making process that took place in London and Ottawa and discuss the tensions that arose.

From Sacred To Profane: European Materials Integration Into Mississippian Cosmology, Campbell Walker
From Sacred To Profane: European Materials Integration Into Mississippian Cosmology, Campbell Walker
Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses
Interpreting the significance of materials used by southeastern Native Americans to express their cosmological beliefs reveals certain trends that reflect changes in culture over time. We recognize that, for many hundreds of years within the Mississippian period, artifacts fashioned from specific materials reflected the relationship between these materials and their place in native cosmology. In the post-Mississippian period, nontraditional materials became available that were used to fashion these same traditional artifact forms. I present research on how Native Americans integrated these new materials into their cosmology by drawing analogies and distinctions between uses of traditional and nontraditional materials in relation …

More Sieve Than Shield: The U.S. Army And Cords In The Pacification Of Phu Yen Province, Republic Of Vietnam, 1965-1972, Robert John Thompson Iii
Dissertations
This dissertation addresses the meaning and execution of pacification during the Vietnam War in the Republic of Vietnam’s Phu Yen Province. Vietnam War scholarship never defined the term, an unsurprising fact given those that directed the war itself never agreed on a lasting interpretation. Void of an analysis of the word, pacification is erroneously discussed as a separate facet, rather than the foundation, of the war. When discussed, pacification is often seen solely as the developmental aspect of the war and one far removed from the battles waged by conventional armies. On the contrary, two dissimilar and tangentially related wars …
Bearing The Double Burden: Combat Chaplains And The Vietnam War, John Donellan Fitzmorris Iii
Bearing The Double Burden: Combat Chaplains And The Vietnam War, John Donellan Fitzmorris Iii
Dissertations
Throughout the period of the Vietnam War, soldiers and Marines of the United States Military were accompanied into the combat zones by members of the clergy who were also part of the military. These chaplains attempted to bring God to the men in the field by providing spiritual and moral support through worship services and certain counseling duties. A number of chaplains, however, believed so strongly in their ministry that they refused to simply stay “on base” and instead shouldered their packs and journeyed with their troops into the most perilous combat zones. In so doing , these combat chaplains …
Cheating In Online Courses For Financial Aid Fraud In The U.S., Robert S. Owen
Cheating In Online Courses For Financial Aid Fraud In The U.S., Robert S. Owen
Administrative Issues Journal
This manuscript reviews issues that differentiate traditional academic cheating from course misconduct that is motivated by a desire to defraud financial aid services in the U.S. Past research on college student cheating has assumed that cheaters are driven by an incentive to obtain undeserved grades in college in order to ultimately obtain a degree. However, researchers on academic dishonesty, professors, and college administrators might not realize that online class members can include virtual "straw" students who are puppets of a financial aid fraud ring leader. Cheating behaviors of straw students differ from cheating behaviors of actual, legitimate students. This has …
Three-Dimensional Analysis Of The Development Of Upper Arm Musculoskeletal Stress Markers In Late Adolescents And Young Adults Of Archaic And Mississippian Populations Of Tennessee, Heather Marie Guzik
Three-Dimensional Analysis Of The Development Of Upper Arm Musculoskeletal Stress Markers In Late Adolescents And Young Adults Of Archaic And Mississippian Populations Of Tennessee, Heather Marie Guzik
Master's Theses
This study compares three methods for the evaluation of morphology of musculoskeletal attachment sites. Two methods were macroscopic and the third was microscopic, utilizing three-dimensional laser scanning and fractal analysis The morphology of 19 upper limb attachment sites was observed in 33 males aged 15 and 30+ years, dating to the Archaic and Mississippian periods from the southeastern U.S. It was hypothesized that 1) the microscopic method would identify subtler differences than the macroscopic methods; 2) enthesis development would be greater in the Mississippian population due to the increased subsistence workload, even among younger individuals; and 3) late adolescents would …

Combat Psychology: Learning To Kill In The U.S. Military, 1947-2012, Patrick Mckinnie
Graduate Theses
In his 1947 work Men Against Fire: The Problem of Battle Command, historian S. L. A. Marshall convinced the U.S. government and military of the critical need for improved techniques in combat psychology. However, his more fundamental assertion that soldiers needed to be trained to overcome an innate psychological resistance to killing would prompt some in the military as well as scholars and medical experts to examine the heart and mind of the soldier in combat. As a result, an emergent science called killology became a critical component in the U.S. military’s quest to better train soldiers for the …

Hito Steyerl's "Duty-Free Art" As Politics And Pedagogy, Rachel Carina Sigismondi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
How does contemporary art engage the contemporary, exactly? Artist Hito Steyerl actively engages this question in her recent works. One might notice upon visiting a Hito Steyerl exhibition that her video works often include recordings of lectures she has given to live audiences in art spaces. Because Steyerl is engaged in this pedagogical practice as an artist, can it be considered contemporary art? Steyerl’s written, lectured, and visual works engage the contemporary moment prodigiously, and cannot be eschewed in an analysis of the perpetually evolving nature of contemporary art. With the use of critical, theoretical and formal analytical tools, this …

The Tarascan (Purépecha) Empire, Anna S. Cohen, Christopher T. Fisher
Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Faculty Publications
At the time of European contact, western Mexico was dominated by the Tarascos, who spoke a language called Purépecha. Never defeated by the bordering Aztec Empire, the Purépecha Empire instituted a bureaucratic system that was designed to extract tribute from subjects and to control political, economic, and social life throughout their territory. Archaeological research shows that existing societies in west Mexico were quickly co-opted by Purépecha tribute-based and ideological systems. This chapter reviews the traditional model of Purépecha development by incorporating archaeological research from both the Pátzcuaro Basin imperial core region and elsewhere in the empire. Recent work indicates that …

Linchpin: A Yaml Template Based Cross Cloud Resource Provisioning Tool, Samvaran Kashyap Rallabandi
Computer Science and Engineering Theses - Archive
A cloud application developed, will have a specific requirement of particular cloud resources and software stack to be deployed to make it run. Resource templates enable the environment design and deployment required for an application. A template describes the infrastructure of the cloud application in a text file which includes servers, floating/public IP, storage volumes, etc. This approach is termed “Infrastructure as a code.” In Amazon public cloud, OpenStack private cloud, Google cloud these templates are called as cloud formation templates, HOT (Heat orchestration templates), Google cloud templates respectively. Though the existing template systems give a flexibility for the end …

Don’T Look Now: The Child In Horror Cinema And Media | Don’T Look Now: The Child In Horror Cinema And Media, Hans Staats
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation examines the definition of the monstrous child in horror cinema and media. Spanning from 1955 to 2009 and beyond, the question of what counts as a monstrous child illuminates a perennial cinematic preoccupation with monstrosity and the relation between the normal and the pathological. Films like The Night of the Hunter (Charles Laughton, 1955), The Bad Seed (Mervyn LeRoy, 1956), Village of the Damned (Wolf Rilla, 1960), The Innocents (Jack Clayton, 1961), Don’t Look Now (Nicolas Roeg, 1973), Profondo rosso/Deep Red (Dario Argento, 1975), Carrie (Brian De Palma, 1976), Halloween (John Carpenter, 1978), Child’s Play (Tom Holland, 1988), …

Urbanization And The Formation Of Modern Nation-States In The Turko-Persian World, Can Ersoy
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Formation of modern states has been studied by numerous scholars over the last four decades however, the particular role of urbanization in this process have received considerably less attention. The few existing works that do focus on this issue exclusively examine the European experience and explain the interaction between cities and emerging states within that historical framework. This dissertation examines socio-political dynamics of urbanization and urbanism in the Turko-Persian geography during the establishment of modern nation-states in order to identify the ways, in which the dynamics affected the ensuing state-society relations. For this purpose I conducted a comparative historical analysis …

Sovereign Invulnerability: Sexual Politics And The Ontology Of Rape, Jane Clare Jones
Sovereign Invulnerability: Sexual Politics And The Ontology Of Rape, Jane Clare Jones
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
As Rebecca Whisnant has noted, notions of “national…and…bodily (especially sexual) sovereignty are routinely merged in rhetoric and metaphor.†(2008:155) Departing from this observation, this project explores the ‘existential infrastructure’ of the ‘logic of sovereign integrity’ in which personhood is thought as analogous to jurisdiction over a bounded territorial enclosure. It traces the philosophical history of this logic, and unfolds the post-Heideggerian French critique of sovereignty as an analysis of how sovereign imperatives are animated by a drive to deny the vulnerabilities of constitutive ontological relation, and are thus implicated in violent cycles of disavowal and appropriation. It then applies this …

Black Americans And The South African Anti-Apartheid Campaign In Portland, Oregon, Ethan Johnson
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper argues that in order to understand the anti-Apartheid campaign in Portland, Oregon it must be located within the particular socio-historical context of race and racism in the city and state. Thus, Black people living in Portland had good reason to compare the Apartheid system in South Africa to their own experience. Therefore, the confluence of national and local issues that move the local anti-Apartheid campaign forward is examined; the paper documents the rise and development of critical organizations in the anti-Apartheid campaign in Portland; the paper focus on the closure of the Honorary South Africa Consulate in downtown …

A West Indian Jubilee In America: British Emancipation And The American Abolition Movement, Dexter Joey Gabriel
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation, “A West Indian Jubilee in America: British Emancipation and the American Abolition Movement,†charts the impact of British Emancipation on American abolitionism and free African-American communities from the 1830s through the 1860s. On August 1,1834 the British Abolition Act freed by proclamation 800,000 slaves in the West Indies. In the coming decades, in print and in public rituals, the success of the former slaves in the British West Indies became a crucial focal point in the debate on American slavery. This debate took place in the flourishing American print culture that emerged in the 1830s: antislavery newspapers, tracts, …

Organizational Structure And Class: Examining Resilience In The Maoist Movement In India, Juhi Tyagi
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
What causes armed movements to last? I address this question by taking up the case of the Maoist movement in India. Through an ethnographic analysis and interviews of 127 current cadre, surrendered militants and non-movement village members in 77 villages, over a period of twelve months in 2013-2014 in three districts in Telangana, India, as well creating and analyzing a database on Maoist incidents (2000-2012), I find that non-violent armed group organizing best predicted movement resilience. Although state and political economy variables formed a base for armed rebellion, organizational structures in the villages determined the presence and sustenance of armed …

The tawny crazy ant, Nylanderia fulva (Mayr) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), has invaded states of the U.S. including Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. Native to South America, N. fulva is considered a pest in the U.S. capable of annoying homeowners and farmers, as well as displacing native ant species. As it continues to expand its range, there is a growing need to develop novel management techniques to control the pest and prevent further spread. Current management efforts rely heavily on chemical control, but these methods have not been successful. A review …

Behind The Curtain: Fetishism And The Production Of Virtual Reality Treatment For Ptsd, Janice Haaken, Mariel Stadick
Psychology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Virtual Iraq/Afghanistan, a virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy designed for the treatment of combat-related PTSD, has generated wide public interest in the wake of growing concerns over mental health problems among service members. Enlisting concepts from the fields of cultural studies and psychoanalytic film criticism, the paper interprets the VR therapy program as a form of technology fetishism within the expanding apparatus of military mental health operations. Even as the program seeks to expose the “invisible wounds of war,” the stories produced through this use of visual culture conform closely to hegemonic military accounts of the psychological effects of combat.

Informal Security Groups As Social Non-Movement In Indonesia: Case Of Buru Jejak In Central Lombok, Yogi Setya Permana
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
This essay discusses vigilante groups in relation to access for rights to security, particularly in Central Lombok District, West Nusa Tenggara Province. Vigilante groups are defined as 'informal security groups' to distinguish them from formal security entities owned by the state such as the police and military. I propose an alternative interpretation toward the existence of informal security groups that is different from mainstream explanation. Most of the literatures have a strong tendency to categorize informal security groups merely as antagonist actors and a predatory element in the process of democratization in Indonesia. By referencing Asef Bayat’s notion of social …

The Crisis At Fort Sumter: The Symbolic Monument That Transformed Northern And Southern Opinions During The Start Of The Civil War, Olivia C. Cabanban
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Understanding the complexity of the Battle at Fort Sumter and the changing opinions of Northerners and Southerners acts as means of delving into the deeper roots of slavery, secession, and national discourse that laced our nation’s undeniable history. The first firings at Fort Sumter were the flashpoint of the entirety of the Civil War, triggering the four years of battle, death, destruction, and competing nationalisms that ensued between the North and South. Because the histories of the war—more specifically the battle of Fort Sumter—are biased because they are written from points of views laced with Confederate and Unionist undertones, comprehending …
