Ireland's Alternative Press: Writing From The Margins, Lance Pettit Nov 2016

Ireland's Alternative Press: Writing From The Margins, Lance Pettit

Irish Communication Review

Given the relative scarcity of published sources on the press in Ireland, it is perhaps not surprising that there is little writing on alternative publications. An Phoblacht/Republican News (AP) Gay Community News (GCN) and The Big Issues (BI) might appear to exemplify O'Sullivan's definition of 'alternative media'. This article provides an examination of the term using examples that are specific to the social and political context of Ireland in the 1990s.

On Gendered Knowledge In Communication: Women In The Film Industry, Michele Martin

Irish Communication Review

Studies in communication have shown that, in the fllm industry. women as directors obtain less financial support than men. They find themselves in a peculiar situation: the discrimination they suffer obliges them to innovate. and hence they often find themselves at the 'avant garde' of cinematographic production. This is specifically true in the area of documentary film-making. To use Carle's words, In film 'the revolution passes through women'.

The Parameters Of The Permissible: How Scrap Saturday Got Away With It, Helena Sheenan Nov 2016

The Parameters Of The Permissible: How Scrap Saturday Got Away With It, Helena Sheenan

Irish Communication Review

From October 1990 to December 1991, weekends had to be organized carefully. If you were not listening to RTE Radio l on Saturday morning, did not catch the repeat on Sunday or make arrangements for it to be recorded for you, you were at a loss during the next week. The word spread like wild fire and Scrap Saturday became central to the public discourse. Talk of audience fragmentation was forgotten. Here was a society talking to Itself, coming to terms with Itself, laughing at itself. We were connected to each other In a particular way through It. There is …

The Anchor: 2016

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Aspects Of The Los Angelesation Of Ireland, Kevin Rockett Nov 2016

Aspects Of The Los Angelesation Of Ireland, Kevin Rockett

Irish Communication Review

Within a short time of beginning his seventeen year reign as Ireland's flrst Film Censor In 1924 James Montgomery (1) declared that the greatest danger to Ireland came not from the AngliciZation of Ireland but from the Los Angelesation of Ireland. This was a surprising admission given that Montgomery himself was closely allied With the conseiVative cultural and political leadership of the country which took power In 1922. During the previous four decades, especially since the foundation of the Gaelic Athletic Association In 1884 and the Gaelic League Jn 1893, enormous efforts had been expended in trying to establish a …

Other resources

IMPACT16 is an encounter with HOOD, RYBN.ORG und FORMATIONS, three expert collectives whose diversified forms of cooperation and flexible working practices transcend disciplinary boundaries.

How and where do alternative realities come about both in and between different fields of knowledge? How can we productively uncover contradictory ›rift zones‹ in today’s world? What kind of frameworks for action can we cultivate?

Informed by multiple perspectives and practices in the arts, politics, technology, sociology, economics and science, the contributing collectives’ inquiries and strategies circumvent disciplinary limits and constraints and open up new spaces for thought and action.

Screwing The Assembly Line: Queerness, Art-Making And Mandela's Mercedes-Benz, Elliot James Nov 2016

Screwing The Assembly Line: Queerness, Art-Making And Mandela's Mercedes-Benz, Elliot James

History Publications

This article analyses the bed installation in Simon Gush’s Red exhibit to draw attention to the ‘sleep-in’ aspect of the 1990 East London Mercedes-Benz strike. It shows how the strike narrative’s emphasis on the shop workers and Nelson Mandela’s flawless red Mercedes-Benz automatically insulates the strike’s central sleep-in component from the topic of queer desire. By revealing Red’s beds and the acts thereon as the strike narrative’s ‘queer limit’, the article uses Gush and Emma Sulkowicz’s techniques to reinvent the sleep-in as a complex space of homosociality and queer self-discovery. Doing so builds on Gush’s installations and uses performance to …

Interest And Irritation: Brown V. Maryland And The Making Of A National Economy, Henry P. Callegary Nov 2016

Interest And Irritation: Brown V. Maryland And The Making Of A National Economy, Henry P. Callegary

Legal History Publications

This paper examines the United States Supreme Court case Brown v. Maryland, 25 U.S. (12 Wheat.) 419 (1827), which struck down Maryland’s licensing fee on wholesalers of imported goods. In doing so, the Court reaffirmed its commitment to a national economic policy, instead of a state-centric system. This paper explores the context of the decision, including profiles of the parties involved, the attorneys for both sides, the lower court decisions, and the majority opinion and dissent from the United States Supreme Court. Additionally, this paper follows the lineage of the case through to the present day, examining its doctrinal impact …

The First Amendment Walks Into A Bar: Trademark Registration And Free Speech, Rebecca Tushnet Nov 2016

The First Amendment Walks Into A Bar: Trademark Registration And Free Speech, Rebecca Tushnet

Notre Dame Law Review

This Article analyzes the First Amendment arguments against section

2(a)’s disparagement bar with reference to the consequences of any

invalidation on the rest of the trademark statute. My fundamental conclusions

are that In re Tam is wrongly reasoned even given the Supreme Court’s

increased scrutiny of commercial speech regulations, and that to hold otherwise

and preserve the rest of trademark law would require unprincipled distinctions

within trademark law. More generally, the Supreme Court’s First

Amendment jurisprudence has become so expansive as to threaten basic

aspects of the regulatory state; the result of subjecting economic regulations

such as trademark registration to …
