A Complete Clarinet Recital, Sara N. Dedona Jan 2016

A Complete Clarinet Recital, Sara N. Dedona

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

A senior recital performance was given as a culmination of my musical studies through my undergraduate program. Many of the research hours arc in the form of practice hours dedicated to the performance. This written portion of the thesis documents research about selected literature and performance implications.

The methodology includes extensive research about the music that is included in the clarinet recital, as well as discussion about repertoire selection and interpretation. The historical aspects of the pieces and composers are other important factors that define the practice and performance of the pieces.

Crowd Crush: How The Law Leaves American Crowds Unprotected, Tracy Hresko Pearl Jan 2016

Crowd Crush: How The Law Leaves American Crowds Unprotected, Tracy Hresko Pearl

Faculty Articles

Crowd-related injuries and deaths are startlingly common both in the United States and worldwide. They occur in a wide range of situations and at a vast array of venues: at music concerts, sporting events, and retail holiday sales, and in and around airports, subway platforms, and parking lots, among other locations. These “crowd crush” incidents, however, are extremely underreported and rarely litigated, masking the seriousness of this issue and making it difficult for the few victims who pursue legal recourse to recover damages. Given that there is virtually no statutory law in the United States pertaining to crowd management and …

Developing School Heads As Instructional Leaders In School–Based Assessment: Challenges And Next Steps, Govinda Ishwar Lingam, Narsamma Lingam

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The aim of this paper is to present the findings of a study on school-based assessment in a Pacific nation – namely, the Solomon Islands. A questionnaire was designed consisting of both open-ended and closed-type questions to elicit the views of school heads on the challenges they faced in school-based assessment. The findings indicated that they faced difficulties in effectively carrying out school-based assessment due to the limited knowledge and skills they possessed. They highlighted that the initial teacher training programme did not include much on assessment and this adversely impacted their work as instructional leaders on assessment for learning …

Career Motivations, Role Expectations And Curriculum Knowledge Of Prospective Secondary English Teachers In Western Australia, Brian Moon, Barbara Harris Jan 2016

Career Motivations, Role Expectations And Curriculum Knowledge Of Prospective Secondary English Teachers In Western Australia, Brian Moon, Barbara Harris

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Teacher quality, teaching standards, and entry criteria for teacher education courses are currently subjects of intense national debate and policy development in Australia. As tertiary institutions respond to calls for a review of standards, there is a need for more data on the characteristics of entrants to teacher education and the factors that are likely to influence their performance as teachers. This survey-based study investigated the entry characteristics of four cohorts of secondary English majors at one institution. Prior studies have focussed on graduate-level students in one-year preparation courses, and addressed fewer factors. This study surveyed undergraduate students embarking on …

Parental Advisory, Explicit Content: Music Censorship And The American Culture Wars, Gavin M. Ratcliffe Jan 2016

Parental Advisory, Explicit Content: Music Censorship And The American Culture Wars, Gavin M. Ratcliffe

Honors Papers

In the 1980s the use of vulgar lyrics in music became connected with social issues surrounding youth and the perceived breakdown of the American family. While the historiography of the debate over music content and regulation, from 1985-1992, is frequently displayed as a partisan issue I argue that loose alliances formed across the political and cultural spectrum in calls for tighter regulation. Despite being a national debate, successful application of pressure for tighter regulation only came about through local efforts which had far reaching consequences for the RIAA’s national retail structure. This paper explores the way censorship efforts took place …

Augmented Reality: A Technology And Policy Primer, Ryan Calo, Tamara Denning, Batya Friedman, Tadayoshi Kohno, Lassana Magassa, Emily Mcreynolds, Bryce Clayton Newell, Jesse Woo

Tech Policy Lab

The vision for AR dates back at least until the 1960s with the work of Ivan Sutherland. In a way, AR represents a natural evolution of information communication technology. Our phones, cars, and other devices are increasingly reactive to the world around us. But AR also represents a serious departure from the way people have perceived data for most of human history: a Neolithic cave painting or book operates like a laptop insofar as each presents information to the user in a way that is external to her and separate from her present reality. By contrast, AR begins to collapse …

Never Look Away: Changing Societal Norms To Eradicate Domestic Violence In Tamil Nadu, India, Adrienne P. Johnson Jan 2016

Never Look Away: Changing Societal Norms To Eradicate Domestic Violence In Tamil Nadu, India, Adrienne P. Johnson

CMC Senior Theses

The objective of this thesis is to explore causes of domestic violence in Tamil Nadu, India. Despite Tamil Nadu's economic development and relatively high levels of female empowerment, it ranks 28th out of 29 states in India for physical domestic violence. Clearly other important factors affect the prevalence of domestic violence rates in Tamil Nadu. This thesis explores already developed theories about domestic violence, the history of Tamil Nadu, as well as the data published from the National Family Health Survey-3 to solve the paradox of Tamil Nadu. Slowly evolving societal norms and the lack of a widespread stigma against …

The Performance Of Melancholy: Understanding The Humours Through Burton, Jonson, And Shakespeare, Lindsey N. Betts Jan 2016

The Performance Of Melancholy: Understanding The Humours Through Burton, Jonson, And Shakespeare, Lindsey N. Betts

CMC Senior Theses

This thesis aims to explore the relationships between dramatic texts and the Elizabethan topic of the humours. It covers Burton's Anatomy of Melancholy, Jonson's plays Every Man Out of His Humour and Every Man in His Humour, and Shakespeare's plays Hamlet and As You Like It. Each of these works provides a glimpse into society and its opinions specifically on melancholy, from its most basic and complex definitions to how it is perceived and addressed.

Whimsical Pornography: Albert Dubout's Illustrations For Sade's Justine, Olivier M. Delers Jan 2016

Whimsical Pornography: Albert Dubout's Illustrations For Sade's Justine, Olivier M. Delers

Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Faculty Publications

In Dangereux supplement: I 'illustration du roman en France au dixhuitieme siecle, Christophe Martin explains that images were generally considered to be dangerous additions to a text, because they could not be limited to their intended primary purpose: to provide a visual translation for characters and events depicted in works of fiction.1 For even as they illustrate, images also offer a reading that necessarily shapes the reader's perception of a novel. In the process, the images themselves become texts with their own complex system of signification. As such "supplements" go, illustrations of Donatien Alphonse Francois de Sade's novels …

Patrice Mersault, L’Incarnation D’Une Philosophie, Alexandra Burgers Jan 2016

Patrice Mersault, L’Incarnation D’Une Philosophie, Alexandra Burgers

CMC Senior Theses
