Did Orson Welles co-author the infamous War of the Worlds broadcast? The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has told us no, primarily because he only contributed the idea behind the broadcast, and ideas alone can’t be copyrighted. “An Idea of Authorship” challenges this premise—that ideas, no matter how significant, cannot qualify for joint authorship in collaborative works—and argues that we as a society should, under certain circumstances, recognize idea-contributors like Welles as joint authors. We should do so to further our society’s interest in encouraging future creations, as well as out of a sense of equity and fairness to idea-contributors, …

In this thesis, I plan to investigate the role of the landscape in Thomas Southerne's play Oroonoko. Most scholarship on Oroonoko focuses on the relationship between Southerthne's play and Aphra Behn's novella of the same name. In particular, the scholarly conversation has focused on the way that Southerne white-washed Aphra Behn's character Imoininda. While this distinction is notable, my research, instead, will focus on the way these bodies—both white and black, colonizer and colonized—are framed by 18th century gardening rhetoric. This rhetoric provided naturally conceived tools for nurturing these bodies. I plan to argue that the language of the natural …

This research paper studies the piano piece Three Minds composed by Narong Prangcharoen. The main focus is the analysis of its three movements: "Fierce," "Absent," and "Hesitant," of which only the first movement receives an in-depth analysis. In addition, the composer's biography, his musical style, a complete list of his composition, and historical background of Three Minds are included.;Prangcharoen, Thai native composer, became well known in the early 2000s. This disquisition provides a modern performance edition of four Brazilian compositions for trumpet and piano by Henrique Alves de Mesquita’ (1830–1906) Fantasia para Piston [Fantasy for trumpet, 1854], Heitor Villa-Lobos’s (1887–1959) Vocalise-Estudo [Vocalise-etude, 1929], Invocação e Ponto [Invocation and point] by Osvaldo Costa de Lacerda (1927-2011), and Edmundo Villani-Cortes’s (b. 1930) Concerto for Trumpet and Piano (2004). I include a biography of all of the composers, a descriptive analysis of the compositions, and tables of critical notes regarding the editions. Purpose -- The purpose of this study was to conduct a content analysis of humor styles used in an original British television show and its adapted U.S. version.;Methodology -- A total of 28 episodes from the UK and U.S. version of the television sitcom The Office were classified under the four humor styles described by Martin et al. (2003).;Findings -- Humor styles used in television sitcoms significantly differ between the two countries. The UK uses more aggressive and self-defeating humor than the U.S., while affiliative humor is the predominant humor style found in the U.S. and is used more frequently …

Industry has been a place maker, and an economic gauge for society since the invention of communities, and this project celebrates that idea. This paper explores the research, artwork and processes that culminated in the "Oversized Load" Master Of Fine Arts thesis exhibition. I am examining the similarities between fear and perception of fictionalized monsters and how we label each other as humans. The fundamental question being, at what point does someone become the "other"? I look at both otherness and the grotesque in the context of body image. Both ostracization and cultural stigma are initiated by social shame. I see monsters as the physical manifestation of that shame. These feelings are closely tied to socially constructed gender norms and standards of beauty. …

Using reception history as a historiographical lens, this study traces the development and maturation of critical language used to describe selected flute works from 1971 to present that include extended playing techniques in addition to theatrical elements specified by the composer. Only English-language documentation is examined, and the majority of these items are reviews. For this study, I sought to understand the demands women face in their everyday lives and how these demands may impact how differing genders perform their jobs in the service industry. I utilized qualitative research methods to analyze focus group transcripts and examine servers who worked in Fargo, ND. The next generation requires humble dwelling spaces within cities hosting problematic urban complexities. While the city attempts to establish order, issues of functionality, density, and economics, take precedent. Between October 2014 and February 2016, Kansas State University partnered with academic and local government and business organizations to host an exhibit displaying William Shakespeare’s First Folio. University and community organizations came together to provide twenty-four programs showcasing the works of William Shakespeare, and to host educational lectures for the community regarding Shakespeare and his contemporaries. The Libraries secured funding to obtain modern Shakespeare materials, filling in critical humanities collection gaps, along with illustrating modern adaptations of Shakespeare’s works to students. The exhibit was a resounding success, attracting more than 4,000 attendees and more than 2,100 participants in programs related …

This memoir-in-essays tells the story of four generations of a family living in one place, Pittsburgh, as they navigate the rise, peak, collapse, and disappearance of the steel industry. In terms of the manuscript’s “situation,” the family must navigate the complex economic, ethnic, environmental, and social struggles that are inherit when living in a place for over one hundred years. The manuscript argues that family and place are so intimately connected that the two entities cannot be separated. This project utilized a form of arts based educational research described as analog hypertext to develop interpretative material representing multiple critical, theoretical, and disciplinary perspectives on objects in a university art museum’s object study gallery. Drawing on scholars’ recommendations for postcolonial interpretation of non-Western art, the project created a web of information, which simultaneously revealed and critiqued the underlying ideologies and power structures shaping the museum’s display in an effort to change existing interpretive practice. Familial Betrayal And Trauma In Select Plays Of Shakespeare, Racine, And The Corneilles, Lynn Kramer

In this dissertation I will argue that familial betrayal is a central element in sixteenth-century British tragedy and seventeenth-century French tragedy. Family relationships help to define who the characters are and provide a point of identification between the audience and the play. This identification, as Aristotle argues, is necessary for the arousal of pity and fear and thus creates the possibility of catharsis. Fear is a key component of psychological trauma. This is the main link between Aristotle’s theories and modern trauma theory but there are other overlapping ideas that form a basis as to why old tragedies still resonate …

The modern First Amendment embodies the idea of freedom as a fundamental good of contemporary American society. The First Amendment protects and promotes everybody’s freedom of thought, belief, speech, and religious exercise as basic goods—as given ends of American political and moral life. It does not protect these freedoms for the sake of promoting any particular vision of the virtuous society. It is neutral on that score, setting limits only in those rare cases when the exercise of a First Amendment freedom exacts an intolerable social cost.

Nicolas Medtner was a composer born out of his time. He was a true Romantic in the Russian Silver Age and his creative ideology owes much to the Romantic poetry that he was devoted to all his life. This poetry put a decisive stamp on his music and influenced his career decisions. Medtner was exposed to the most renowned literature from an early age. Influenced by his father, and his oldest brother Emil, he developed a lifelong love for literature and especially poetry. Background: Breastfeeding is strongly associated with health benefits for children and their mothers. Despite this knowledge, breastfeeding rates in the United States have increased only slightly. Current research examines the relationship between nurse characteristics and patient outcomes in adult intensive care and acute care settings. To date there is very limited research examining nurse variables and outcomes in women and children, and very little knowledge regarding the characteristics of the nurse in relation to patient’s breastfeeding success.
