The Fission And Fusion In International Use Of Force: Relating Unlawful Use Of Force And The War Crime Of Disproportionate Force Not Justified By Miitary Necessity, Mbori Otieno, Emmah Wabuke, Smith Otieno
Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law
Jus ad bellum and jus in bello are not disparate in operation. There are several points of intersection in the two concepts, commencing with the context in which they apply, and further, in their interpretation of the general principles of proportionality and necessity. Although proportionality connotes divergent theoretical notions depending on the backdrop against which it is set, in practice, these notions are often fused together. However, points of fission (divergence) still persist. The best example of which is in the context of 'The Crime of Disproportionate Use of Force' where the difference between the two notions of 'proportionality' can …

How Can A Child's Fluency Be Improved And Provide Support For Comprehension?, Sharon Marie Collins
Graduate Research Papers
This paper examines the literature that addresses ways to improve fluency and to provide support for fluency development and comprehension. The culmination of this literature review results in the creation of a project addressing the question, How can I encourage the families of my students to be more involved in their child's reading? This project uses the structure of a family literacy night to focus upon fluency development and literature engagement between children and their families.

El Silencio Pertenece Al Sonido, Carlota Frisón Fernández
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Cuernos O Matrimonios De Conveniencia O Cuando La Tragedia Es Risible, Rakhel Villamil-Acera
Teatro: Revista de Estudios Escénicos / A Journal of Theater Studies

Traversing The East Coast In A Pair Of Converse, Laura A. Stall
Traversing The East Coast In A Pair Of Converse, Laura A. Stall
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
They say the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. My journey began with a step in a pair of low-top pink Converse sneakers. In this creative nonfiction piece, I wrote about my journey through life through my shoes. In humorous and sometimes touching stories, I recount the people and events that I feel have shaped me to be who I am today, whether that is a good or bad thing. Every anecdote comes fresh with a pair of Converse sneakers. However, in the end, the story is not just about the shoes; it’s about the life …

Empowering Elementary Teachers To Explore Critical Literacy Through Drama-Based Instruction, Courtney J. Jensen
Graduate Research Papers
This research project comes in the form of a professional development project combining the theories of critical literacy for elementary students and drama as a form of arts integration in literacy instruction. The project consists of six workshop sessions intended for willing elementary school teachers looking to expand their thinking around literacy instruction. Participants experience introductions to drama as an instructional approach by learning three specific strategies, including tableau, character interviews, and writing-in-role. They also learn about the basic elements of critical literacy by engaging in self-exploration and reflection, along with participating in research-based learning exercises intended to extend individuals' …

Figure Of An Anartist: Keeping Local Francophone Literature Engaged With Mustapha Benfodil's Literature-Action, Alexandra Gueydan-Turek
Figure Of An Anartist: Keeping Local Francophone Literature Engaged With Mustapha Benfodil's Literature-Action, Alexandra Gueydan-Turek
French & Francophone Studies Faculty Works
At a time when the Algerian Francophone publishing market remains dominated by Paris and the readership of French is said to be dwindling in Algeria, the future of Algeria's Francophone literary culture appears bleak. Through the writings of Mustapha Benfodil, perhaps the most unavoidable author from the post-Civil War generation, this article analyzes the ways in which contemporary Algerian literature asserts its autonomy from the Parisian “center” and redefines the literary sphere as a cornerstone of social change in Algeria. Paying particular attention to the figure of the “anartiste” first described in Archéologie du chaos (amoureux) (Barzakh, 2007), and later …

The Pregnancy Penalty, Michele Goodwin
The Pregnancy Penalty, Michele Goodwin
Health Matrix: The Journal of Law-Medicine
Punishing pregnant women increasingly serves as a litmus test in political discourse, inviting more than a metaphor about state sanctioned violence targeted at women. In 2016, candidates for the United States presidency threatened to defund Planned Parenthood if elected and a leading candidate promised he would "punish" pregnant women who seek abortions. Other presidential candidates urged that even victims of rape and incest should be forced to carry their pregnancies to term, imposing yet another penalty or strike against sexually violated women and girls. Local legislatures and governors show equal contempt for and desire to penalize women in the United …

Understanding Fertility Regulation Strategies Among Educated Women In Accra, Cicely Marston, Alicia Renedo, Gertrude Nyaaba, Kazuyo Machiyama, Placide Tapsoba
Reproductive Health
In Ghana fertility is declining, especially among urban educated women, yet according to the Ghana DHS, use of modern family planning methods fell between 2003 and 2014 in Greater Accra, particularly among better-educated and urban women. Recent studies have shown strong resistance to hormonal methods, reportedly because of fear of side effects. This study aimed to understand fertility regulation strategies among educated women in Accra using a qualitative, exploratory approach. Use of different methods was bound up in women’s modern identities and their attempts to meet the demands of modern urban life (get a good education and a professional, well-paid …
