Making The Invisible, Visible: Rti And Reading Comprehension, Jonathan Hart, Divonna M. Stebick Jan 2016

Making The Invisible, Visible: Rti And Reading Comprehension, Jonathan Hart, Divonna M. Stebick

Education Faculty Publications

For the better part of a century the educational community has had increased focus on the importance of reading. The publication of Why Johnny Can't Read and What You Can Do About It (Flesch, 1955) began the surge of effort to better understand the cognitive process of reading to further examine how educators can help children become better readers. Since this 1950's publication, reading research grew and philosophies developed and subsequently changed. However, one thing remained the same: understanding what we read is critically important to becoming a critical thinker. Thus, reading comprehension research continued to boom and the educational …

Anthony Amsterdam's Perspectives On The Fourth Amendment, And What It Teaches About The Good And Bad In Rodriguez V. United States, Tracey Maclin Jan 2016

Anthony Amsterdam's Perspectives On The Fourth Amendment, And What It Teaches About The Good And Bad In Rodriguez V. United States, Tracey Maclin

UF Law Faculty Publications

Anthony Amsterdam’s article, Perspectives On The Fourth Amendment is one of the best, if not the best, law review article written on the Fourth Amendment. Thus, Minnesota Law Review on its hundredth anniversary fittingly recognizes and honors Professor Amsterdam’s article in its Symposium edition, “Standing on the Shoulders of Giants: Celebrating 100 Volumes of the Minnesota Law Review.” I am flattered that the Law Review invited me to participate in this Symposium. Specifically, my article connects two perspectives from Amsterdam’s article — the Fourth Amendment’s concern with discretionary police power and the Framers’ vision of the Fourth Amendment to bar …

Underinclusivity And The First Amendment: The Legislative Right To Nibble At Problems After Williams-Yulee, Clay Calvert Jan 2016

Underinclusivity And The First Amendment: The Legislative Right To Nibble At Problems After Williams-Yulee, Clay Calvert

UF Law Faculty Publications

Using the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 opinion in Williams-Yulee v. Florida Bar as an analytical springboard, this Article examines the slipperiness — and sometimes fatalness — of the underinclusiveness doctrine in First Amendment free-speech jurisprudence. The doctrine allows lawmakers, at least in some instances, to take incremental, step-by-step measures to address harms caused by speech, rather than requiring an all-out, blanket-coverage approach. Yet, if the legislative tack taken is too small to ameliorate the harm that animates a state’s alleged regulatory interest, it could doom the statute for failing to directly advance it. In brief, the doctrine of underinclusivity requires …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Computers now offer opportunities to grasp, store, and explore huge corpora in a matter of weeks or months, and in a proportion ten years ago barely conceivable to scholars in the Humanities who would not have taken up the task of arranging such corpora with traditional archival and documentation tools, less committing themselves to a lifetime of work. Recent algorithms and hardware also allow computer scientists to develop new software tools based on machine learning and artificial intelligence, in order to emphasize inconspicuous links between data contained within very large archives, while such archives are composed by structured …

Aspect Mining Using Multiobjective Genetic Clustering Algorithms, David G. Bethelmy Jan 2016

Aspect Mining Using Multiobjective Genetic Clustering Algorithms, David G. Bethelmy

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

In legacy software, non-functional concerns tend to cut across the system and manifest themselves as tangled or scattered code. If these crosscutting concerns could be modularized and the system refactored, then the system would become easier to understand, modify, and maintain. Modularized crosscutting concerns are known as aspects and the process of identifying aspect candidates in legacy software is called aspect mining.

One of the techniques used in aspect mining is clustering and there are many clustering algorithms. Current aspect mining clustering algorithms attempt to form clusters by optimizing one objective function. However, the objective function to be optimized tends …

Small Jazz Ensembles And Ideals Of Urban Social Interaction, Kaori Otera Chen Jan 2016

Small Jazz Ensembles And Ideals Of Urban Social Interaction, Kaori Otera Chen

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

There is general consensus in urban theory that "community" is good. Nevertheless people in communities may or may not interact to a significant extent with one another nor engage in intertwined social lives, yet tend to claim within-group unity and harmony. A musical model of interaction and engagement may offer a new perspective on the dynamics of community. By listening closely I explore how musicians in small jazz ensembles interact with one another and function during their collective music-making processes and find a set of musical behaviors that exhibits an ideal model for human interaction and engagement in the social …

Literature And Popular Fiction : Examining The Distinction, Mark Christian Dards Collington Jan 2016

Literature And Popular Fiction : Examining The Distinction, Mark Christian Dards Collington

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

As a society we have developed a hierarchical distinction that we apply to fiction, defining some of it as superior (literature), and some of it as inferior (popular fiction). While this distinction undeniably exists, it resides in our social consciousness, and is not a delineation that is supported by demonstrable differences in the properties of the texts themselves. Rather, it serves to inflect our readings and interpretations of the texts dependent upon their categorization. This hierarchy has been constructed and imposed over time through the treatment of works by critics, academics, librarians, marketing departments, and others in a variety of …

The Enlightenment And The Origins Of Racism, Peter Andrew Schrom Jan 2016

The Enlightenment And The Origins Of Racism, Peter Andrew Schrom

Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)

The Enlightenment has been thought of as the Age of Reason: the birth of the individual, the rise of print culture, the beginning of the middle class, and an exponential growth in the sciences. The Enlightenment shaped the world into the form that it is today, but it also marks the start of colonization and the slave trade. The following thesis seeks to demonstrate the importance of the Enlightenment to both colonization and the slave trade; that without it neither of these practices would have had the reach that they achieved over time. Using the works of Adam Smith, Jean-Jacques …

A Theory-Driven Approach To Subject Design In Teacher Education, Lucia Zundans-Fraser, Greg Auhl Jan 2016

A Theory-Driven Approach To Subject Design In Teacher Education, Lucia Zundans-Fraser, Greg Auhl

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The intent of this study was to examine how a theoretically-designed subject in an undergraduate teacher education course impacted on the learning and confidence of pre-service teachers in catering for the needs of students with diverse needs. The subject design utilised theoretical principles of self-organisation that were incorporated with the teaching and application of three evidence-based pedagogies of inclusion: explicit teaching, cooperative learning and collaborative practice. The study examined how the principles were enacted throughout the delivery of the subject and sought pre-service teacher reflections after completion. Initial findings suggest that embedding these principles and incorporating practical application throughout the …

Pre-Service Teachers And Climate Change: A Stalemate?, Helen J. Boon Jan 2016

Pre-Service Teachers And Climate Change: A Stalemate?, Helen J. Boon

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Findings from the second phase of a study of pre-service teachers’ attitudes to environmental education and knowledge of climate change are reported in this paper. A sample of 87 pre-service teachers participated in a survey study in the last year of their Bachelor of Education degree to examine developments to their attitudes to environmental education and their knowledge of climate change as a result of training. Results showed their attitudes towards environmental education were consistently favourable, but their climate change science knowledge had not changed as a result of their participation in their degree. Data on preservice teachers’ sources of …

Transforming Pedagogies: Encouraging Pre-Service Teachers To Engage The Power Of The Arts In Their Approach To Teaching And Learning, Mary-Rose Mclaren, Julie Arnold Jan 2016

Transforming Pedagogies: Encouraging Pre-Service Teachers To Engage The Power Of The Arts In Their Approach To Teaching And Learning, Mary-Rose Mclaren, Julie Arnold

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper describes and analyses, through the use of case studies, two experiences of transformative learning in an undergraduate arts education unit. Pre-service teachers designed and engaged with arts-based curriculum activities, created their own artwork, participated in a modified production of The Tempest and kept a reflective journal. These activities constituted the data which was analysed using creative frameworks such as case writing, script writing, narrative analysis and found poetry as ways of developing richer understanding of pre-service teachers’ self-perceptions and self-awareness as teachers and as potential artists. The stories explored here uncover two different ways of encountering the challenges …

Three Key Conditions To Revitialise An Eportfolio Program In Response To Increasing Regulation Of Teacher Education, John Leslie Kertesz Jan 2016

Three Key Conditions To Revitialise An Eportfolio Program In Response To Increasing Regulation Of Teacher Education, John Leslie Kertesz

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This paper describes a study undertaken within the education faculty of a mid-sized university in response to the recommendations of the Teacher Education Ministerial Advisory Group (TEMAG) (2014) that initial teacher education (ITE) graduates emerge with an evidence-based professional standards-focused portfolio of teaching competency. In concluding that current teacher educator usage of, and attitudes to, ePortfolios limit the capacity of this particular faculty to respond to this challenge, the paper proposes three critical conditions to revitalise a stalled ePortfolio program and prepare for an increasingly demanding future. In sharing this experience, the paper seeks to support discussion of how teacher …

Southern Steam Prints: Large Scale, Relief Printmaking, Allison Mueller

Honors College Theses

Southern Steam Prints, a steamroller printmaking festival for Georgia Southern University I directed and organized. The project helped create community involvement in printmaking as an art form, gained notoriety for the Betty Foy Sanders Department of Art and especially the Print, Paper, and Book Arts Program. The project taught valuable skill mastery in relief print techniques, commercialism, and leadership for the kinds of event that artists plan, jury, and participate in, in the professional world. The Southern Steam Prints festival took place on April 23, 2016. Artworks created at the event were exhibited at the Center of Art and Theater …

Toward A Model Of Traditional Retailers And Sellers Empowerment In Improving Competitiveness Against Modern Markets In Banyumas Region, Indonesia, Eko Suyono, Omar Al Farooque, Riswan Riswan

DLSU Business & Economics Review

With the rapid expansion of modern markets (i.e., supermarkets and minimarkets), traditional retail businesses are facing huge challenges in the Banyumas region, Central Java, Indonesia to survive and continue doing businesses. While modern markets are supported by huge number of resources, including unlimited funding, modern infrastructures, professional human resources, global networking, and so forth, traditional retailers and sellers lack these resources to compete with the new supermarkets and minimarkets. To promote populist economic system, the government’s role in terms of policies, education and training, and funding assistance are very important in supporting the sustainable development of these traditional businesses. The …

Rhetoric, Spectacle, And Mechanized Amusement At The World’S Columbian Exposition, Jonathan Mark Balzotti Jan 2016

Rhetoric, Spectacle, And Mechanized Amusement At The World’S Columbian Exposition, Jonathan Mark Balzotti

Faculty Publications

This essay focuses on the disruptive qualities of public entertainment and public spectacle at the 1893 Columbian exposition. I use my analysis of different fairgoers’ responses to explore the ways public spectacle, even in its most commercialized form, can lead to a rhetorical response from the audience where alternative views of culture are made available. Rather than seeing spectacle as empty theatricality, I argue that in certain cases spectacle may speak more loudly than plot, character, and script. Just as the backdrop for a theatrical dialogue can change the story, so too can spectacle alter the story being told, and, …
