Our target article, “Insects have the capacity for subjective experience,” has provoked a diverse range of commentaries. In this response we have collated what we see as the major themes of the discussion. It is clear that we differ from some commentators in our commitments to what subjective experience is and what the midbrain is capable of. Here we clarify where we stand on those points and how our view differs from some other influential perspectives. The commentaries have highlighted the most lively areas of disagreement. We revisit here the debates surrounding whether the cortex is essential for any form …

With the rise of incidents of bigotry on U.S. campuses

after the November elections, a question has

come up. How can we differentiate between free

and hate speech and what can we do about the latter?

The answer is complex, but there is a solution

to the problem.

At the federal level – and contrary to popular

belief – free speech is not absolute. The Supreme

Court has ruled many times setting limits on

speech, from child pornography cases, to deceptive

advertisement to specific threats of violence. The

Expanding The Model Of Organizational Learning: Scope, Contingencies, And Dynamics, Barbara Grah, Vlado Dimovski, Charles C. Snow, Judita Peterlin

Economic and Business Review

Our paper seeks to contribute to the understanding of organizational learning by (a) integrating existing models of organizational learning into a single model and (b) expanding the model to include inter-organizational learning, adding key contingencies suggested by the growing literature on neuroleadership, and incorporating a process dimension to reflect the fact that organizational learning is continuous and dynamic. The resulting expanded model of organizational learning encompasses four levels on which learning can occur: individual, team, organizational, and inter-organizational. The overall validity of the model is illustrated by applying it to two knowledge-intensive Slovenian firms. Implications for theory and practice are …

Instructional Motivations: What Can We Learn From Homeschooling Families?, Jesse Thomas

The Qualitative Report

Some educational theorists have believed that the beneficial aspects of home education will eventually find their way into mainstream educational contexts. The purpose of this paper was to extract the motivations behind homeschooling instructional decisions. This study was built on surveys and interviews from over 1000 homeschooling parents across the United States. Participants were asked about the reason for their instructional routines. Instructional motivations reported included a child’s particular learning style, a parent’s personal preference, a child’s interests, community resources, experience, faith, family reasons, special goals, and special needs. These motivations may also represent those of public school parents, thus …

Irish Communication Review

This paper analyses the first decade of ads published and broadcast by Guinness in Ireland. The period is 1959 to 1969, a time that marked the start of significant change in Irish society. It is argued here that the messages in the adverts chronicle many of these changes. Seismic shifts in government economic policy coincided with the 200^th anniversary of the foundation of the Guinness brewery. The ensuing lift in the economy’s fortunes is mirrored in many ads, as are some of the demographic changes, such as rising marriage rates and falling birth rates, and an expanding middle class. …

In the 21st century, literary study has started a self-reflection on the multiple facets of theory, thus giving rise to anti-theories, meta-theories and after-theories, all of which cast doubt on theoretical study and literary theory. However, all the facets of theory are the inherent dimensions of theory per se. The exploration of the unveiling way of theory lies in a comprehensive view and an unveiling of theory itself. The theoretical rectangle reveals the varied and interconnected connotations within theory per se. Interfaith-Cross-Cultural Improvisation: Music And Meaning Across Boundaries Of Faith And Culture, Gerard J. Yun

This article explores the social value and meaning of interfaith-cross-cultural improvisation (musical improvisation between people from differing cultural and faith traditions) and its unique quality of engaging widely different cultural and faith-based groups. It draws concepts from evolutionary biology, ethnomusicology, religious experience, the emerging field of community music, and the insight of first-hand participants. Interfaith-cross-cultural improvisation can be seen as a form of “deep play” with the ability to signal and evoke empathy across participants who identify with divergent beliefs, cultures, and practices. The God-Camera Of Theology And Memory In Terrence Malick’S The Tree Of Life, Sherry Coman

Consensus

Terrence Malick’s film The Tree of Life presents a personal and emotionally-laden memory play that is visually and symbolically “framed” by theological and biblical contexts that are both explicit and implicit. This paper explores how the film’s constantly moving camera and elliptical editing help to establish a trope for depicting how God moves in the lives of the characters. Through non-traditional film production and presentation techniques, Malick manifests a theme of “God as ultimate artist” who participates with us in the restoration of what is broken, and who makes “all things new”.
