Old Wet Paint, Michael G. Hansen Jan 2016

Old Wet Paint, Michael G. Hansen

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Contemporary living can cause stress that is detrimental to creativity. Most of the world’s population has grown dependent on technology to connect us to, and keep track of daily, monthly, and hourly actions. Our plans fill us with the illusion of control over random events. I do not trust technology to help me find my way in the world. I want to find my way in life using limited technology. My art practice is an example of this trajectory and has become my way of embracing random events. The logic I use to employ order in the pandemonium of everyday …

Pavlovian To Instrumental Transfer In The Peak Procedure: Insights Into Time, Benjamin Robert Eisenreich Jan 2016

Pavlovian To Instrumental Transfer In The Peak Procedure: Insights Into Time, Benjamin Robert Eisenreich

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Responding in the peak procedure has long been utilized as a prototypical model of timing behavior in animals (Church, 2002). Part and parcel to this approach has been the assumption that peak intervals and peak rates are representative measures of two independent constructs, timing and motivation respectively. However, recent investigations into motivational influences and the biological underpinnings of timing behavior have resulted in converging models that indicate responding in the peak procedure may actually be a combination of motivational and timing factors (Kirkpatrick, 2014). In pursuit of this, the present study utilized two experimental manipulations to examine the impact of …

Issues Of Ethics Training In Turkish Counselor Education As Associated With Accreditation, Certification, And Licensure, Umut Arslan

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The purpose of this study was to investigate qualifications of ethics training in counselor education programs in Turkey associated with accreditation, certification, and licensure. The survey data were collected from 251 Turkish counseling students to examine differences in ethical judgments between freshmen and seniors. This survey was based on the counselor ethical practice and belief survey by Gibson and Pope (1993) regarding Turkish counseling ethical codes and sources of ethics information. I used chi-square analyses to analyze the Turkish data. Statistically significant differences were found between university seniors and freshmen in items that related to dual relationships, multicultural counseling, competency, …

Post-Discharge Outcomes For Youth Served In A Residential Treatment Center, Tara Lynne Smart Jan 2016

Post-Discharge Outcomes For Youth Served In A Residential Treatment Center, Tara Lynne Smart

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This causal-comparative non-experimental study explores the pattern of post-discharge functioning for youth who received either short term or long term residential treatment at Intermountain Children’s Home. Post-discharge functioning was evaluated using the Youth Outcome Questionnaire, 2.0 (Y-OQ 2.0) which tracked the behavioral and subjective experience of the youth, as well as their ability to function in society. Additionally, functional outcomes were also assessed post-discharge via phone interview questions about meaningful life domains. The researcher found that youth in both short and long term residential care experienced significant decreases in their Y-OQ 2.0 scores from admission to discharge, admission to 6 …

School Supports For Lgbtq Students: Counteracting The Dangers Of The Closet, Lauri Mae Lindquist Jan 2016

School Supports For Lgbtq Students: Counteracting The Dangers Of The Closet, Lauri Mae Lindquist

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Researchers have reported that being proud and open about one’s sexual and/or gender identity is related to fewer negative psychological outcomes. However, this process of identity development is often impeded by environmental factors, such as minority stress. Through his minority stress hypothesis, Meyer (2003) suggests that suggests that living in a society that is intolerant of central features of the self (e.g., sexual orientation and gender identity) increases the level of stress in individuals with minority statuses. These environmental stressors are consistently shown by research to account for the disproportionate amount of negative psychological and academic outcomes experienced by sexual …

Autobiographical Memory Of Nature-Based Tourists: Formation Of Place Attachment And Influences On Visitor Behavior, Jacob Daniel Jorgenson Jan 2016

Autobiographical Memory Of Nature-Based Tourists: Formation Of Place Attachment And Influences On Visitor Behavior, Jacob Daniel Jorgenson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The National Park Service (NPS) is currently beginning the celebration of 100 years as a formal agency. Yellowstone National Park, the world’s 1st national park, catered to over 4 million visitors during 2015. Visitation is rising, but there are underlying issues that are highlighted in a recent guiding document; Revisiting Leopold (2012). Congressional budgets are decreasing, younger generations are losing interest in nature, and diverse populations have yet to become fully vested in the NPS. Realizing these pressing issues, Yellowstone sought to understand ways in which visitors can support the park and how to engage visitors to create long-lasting relationships. …

The Acceptability Of Using Moodgym To Treat Depression In Adolescents: A Pilot Study, Jaime Rebekah Long Jan 2016

The Acceptability Of Using Moodgym To Treat Depression In Adolescents: A Pilot Study, Jaime Rebekah Long

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Depression rates are high among adolescents, yet most young people do not receive treatment. Alternatives to in-person treatment are needed which are cost-effective and widely accessible. Teens use technology at high rates, but innovative methods of online treatment have not been widely researched in the United States. MoodGYM is a free, internet-based program designed to prevent depression in adolescents which has shown promise in research studies in Australia. To date, no studies with MoodGYM have been published in the United States. This pilot study was designed to evaluate the acceptability of usage of MoodGYM at home by adolescents to treat …

Landscape To Local: A Multi-Scale Evaluation Of Voluntary Efforts To Reduce Fragmentation And Enhance Management Of Rangelands For Sage-Grouse, Joseph Tyler Smith Jan 2016

Landscape To Local: A Multi-Scale Evaluation Of Voluntary Efforts To Reduce Fragmentation And Enhance Management Of Rangelands For Sage-Grouse, Joseph Tyler Smith

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

For imperiled species, the hierarchical nature of habitat selection suggests the need for a hierarchical approach to conservation: address threats to persistence operating at broad scales on populations before focusing on the quality of patches or availability of particular resources used by individuals. We apply this approach to conservation and management of habitat for greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) in the eastern portion of their range where cropland conversion continues to fragment sagebrush grasslands. Using locations of active leks in portions of Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota as spatial indices of populations, we found sage-grouse distribution was highly sensitive …

Airline Safety Improvement Through Experience With Near-Misses: A Cautionary Tale, Peter Madsen, Robin L. Dillon, Catherine H. Tinsley Jan 2016

Airline Safety Improvement Through Experience With Near-Misses: A Cautionary Tale, Peter Madsen, Robin L. Dillon, Catherine H. Tinsley

Faculty Publications

In recent years, the U.S. commercial airline industry has achieved unprecedented levels of safety, with the statistical risk associated with U.S. commercial aviation falling to 0.003 fatalities per 100 million passengers. But decades of research on organizational learning show that success often breeds complacency and failure inspires improvement. With accidents as rare events, can the airline industry continue safety advancements? This question is complicated by the complex system in which the industry operates where chance combinations of multiple factors contribute to what are largely probabilistic (rather than deterministic) outcomes. Thus, some apparent successes are realized because of good fortune rather …

Leveraging Multimedia To Advance Science By Disseminating A Greater Variety Of Scholarly Contributions In More Accessible Formats, James Gaskin, Paul Benjamin Lowry, David Hull Jan 2016

Leveraging Multimedia To Advance Science By Disseminating A Greater Variety Of Scholarly Contributions In More Accessible Formats, James Gaskin, Paul Benjamin Lowry, David Hull

Faculty Publications

For the welfare of the scientific community, we are intentionally rocking the boat with regards to the way we conduct, recognize, and disseminate scholarly contributions. As a scientific community, we are doing ourselves a great disservice by ignoring the insights, artifacts, discoveries, and conversations which naturally occur in the scientific process of advancing knowledge, but which do not fit into the very narrowly defined form of print-style articles. By failing to recognize, reward, and publish the wide variety of scholarly contributions that are not well suited to the print-style article, we hinder scientific progress, devalue important and necessary contributions to …

Interspecies Interactions Between Hemidactylus Mabouia, Hemidactylus Garnotii, And Osteopilus Septentrionalis, Connor Voirin Jan 2016

Interspecies Interactions Between Hemidactylus Mabouia, Hemidactylus Garnotii, And Osteopilus Septentrionalis, Connor Voirin

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Exotic species are a substantial threat to native species and understanding their interactions is important. The focus of this study is to analyze the competition between two non-native gecko species, Hemidactylus mabouia and Hemidactylus garnotii. These two species occupy similar niches on buildings in Florida, with H. mabouia being the more successful of the two species,, leading to higher abundances of H. mabouia. The Cuban Treefrog, Osteopilus septentrionalis, another exotic species of the Florida mainland, preys on these species an on some of the same prey of those geckos. In the presence O. septentrionalis, H. garnotii numbers overtake H. mabouia. Understanding …

Brand Name Vs. Generic Medications, Reem Warrayat Jan 2016

Brand Name Vs. Generic Medications, Reem Warrayat

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

I will be looking in depth between the similarities and differences of brand name and generic medications. I will see what makes one a brand name and one a generic and how similar and different the drugs can be from each other before they are considered an entirely different drug. After that, I will talk about the FDA guidelines, and how my research shows evidence for something entirely different. Finally, I will then look at case studies, my own experience, and surveys to see which drug is preferred more among people and why they chose what they do, and if …

The American Nightmare: Hyperreality And Loss Of Identity In American Psycho And Escape From Tomorrow, Tyler Crawford Jan 2016

The American Nightmare: Hyperreality And Loss Of Identity In American Psycho And Escape From Tomorrow, Tyler Crawford

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The renowned French philosopher and cultural critic Jean Baudrillard, in his 1981 treatise Simulacra and Simulation, creates and defines the term “hyperreality” as “the generation by models of a real without origin or reality.” Utilizing this definition, this thesis analyzes the text and film versions of Bret Easton Ellis’s controversial postmodern classic, American Psycho, in conjunction with the anti-“Disneyfication” independent film, Escape from Tomorrow, as complex examples in fiction of the excess and ultimate consequences of American materialism that has developed since the 1991 publication of Ellis’s novel about the over-indulgent “yuppie” culture of the 1980’s. I argue that the …

The Relationship Between Non-Human And Human Research And The Scientific Construction Of Race, Gender, And Sexuality, Shayna Marie De Ruysscher Jan 2016

The Relationship Between Non-Human And Human Research And The Scientific Construction Of Race, Gender, And Sexuality, Shayna Marie De Ruysscher

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

My thesis focuses on the relationship between science and non-human research studies. Specifically, I will look at the role that ‘animals’ play in the scientific construction of race, gender, and sexuality. In what ways has the scientific construction of the dichotomy between primates and human beings been used in science to create racial, gender and sexual dichotomies? In what ways are the resulting consequences of such dichotomies in medical fields a reflection of these constructions? My research attempts to show various ways in which language and interpretations established by science help to create a dichotomy between animals and humans, which …

Disneyland: Embodying American Mythology And Cultural Values From 1955 To The Present, Erin Fee Jan 2016

Disneyland: Embodying American Mythology And Cultural Values From 1955 To The Present, Erin Fee

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Disneyland Park, which opened in Anaheim, California on July 17, 1955, has been a fixture of American culture for over sixty years. Each of its themed “lands” are constructed to embody the popular perceptions of an abstract idea, such as the frontier, tomorrow, and adventure. Even areas based on specific locations are primarily invested in representing places as they exist in the American imagination. Culture is dynamic, however, and public sensibilities evolve. The constant struggle to maintain societal relevancy and resonance has revised nearly every facet of Disneyland’s narrative since its opening, in ways both subtle and substantial.

The Corruption Of Obstetrics, Chelsea Hube Jan 2016

The Corruption Of Obstetrics, Chelsea Hube

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Within the last two centuries, birth has undergone a major transformation as doctors took over and relocated childbirth from the home to the hospital, leaving the reproductive female body and female healers devalued and disempowered. Advancements in medical science have played a fundamental role in this transformation. As birth has become more and more medicalized, women seem to have lost their agency and believe the only place to have a successful birth is in a hospital. Reproductive technologies have certainly had beneficial effects, but they have also turned the mother into an extension of obstetric machines, communicating a power hierarchy …

Punishment And Prophecy: Blindness In Oedipus Rex, King Lear, And Jane Eyre, Kaley Jemison Jan 2016

Punishment And Prophecy: Blindness In Oedipus Rex, King Lear, And Jane Eyre, Kaley Jemison

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

This paper will examine the significance of blindness in Oedipus Rex, King Lear, and Jane Eyre. In each of these canonical works, the character presents a moral infringement and consequently is castigated through the loss of sight. For Oedipus and Rochester this is a sexual transgression while for Gloucester, blindness is a reflection of his ignorance of his son’s duplicity. This literary commonality implements vision loss as a punishment for immorality. Yet, from this loss of sight also stems transcendence. Paradoxically, in losing their sight, the characters garner a greater sensory awareness and prophetic insight as Oedipus sees his future …

Should Religious Fundamentalists Be Held Culpable For Their Crimes? An Analysis Of The Psychological And Societal Effects Of Hyper-Religiosity, Giuliana Natale Jan 2016

Should Religious Fundamentalists Be Held Culpable For Their Crimes? An Analysis Of The Psychological And Societal Effects Of Hyper-Religiosity, Giuliana Natale

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

My research was used to determine if religiously-motivated criminal offenders should be held culpable and how offenders should be punished in a court of law. Some who commit religiously motivated crimes do not do so of their own volition (e.g., those born into a cult), some are not legally competent to stand trial, and some qualify to claim insanity by both legal and psychological standards. Psychological and social pressures exerted by cults (e.g., deindividuation) can interfere with moral and legal reasoning of the offender. I argue that only those individuals with awareness of the legality of their actions and ability …

Historical Memory And The Past: The Spanish Civil War In Current-Day Spain, Melanie M. Oates Jan 2016

Historical Memory And The Past: The Spanish Civil War In Current-Day Spain, Melanie M. Oates

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The legacy of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39) and its implications have stipulated a major point of contention in contemporary Spanish society. While the historical accuracies of the war had been silenced during General Francisco Franco’s dictatorship (1939-75), the exhumation of mass graves in recent years has revived a general interest in rescuing the historical memory of those who lost the war. Accordingly, in 2007, the Historical Memory Law (“Ley de la memoria histórica”) was passed. However, while there are many Spaniards who strongly support the recovering of the historical memory of this tragic period in Spain, there are others …

The Guardian Ad Litem As The Child's Privilege Holder, Starla Doyal Jan 2016

The Guardian Ad Litem As The Child's Privilege Holder, Starla Doyal

University of Colorado Law Review

Children in therapy have a strong interest in maintaining the confidentiality of communications with their therapists. Without the assurance of confidential communications, children may not be as open with their therapists, which can make therapy less effective. Although children have privilege rights to their psychotherapist-patient communications just as adults do, their parents generally hold and exercise that privilege. Many courts have recognized that a parent should not hold a child's privilege when the parent and child have divergent interests. This raises the question of who should hold the privilege in the parent's place. In L.A.N. v. L.M.B., the Colorado Supreme …

Towards A Theory Of Sustainable Consumption And Production: Constructs And Measurement, R Dubey, A Gunasekaran, Sj Childe, T Papadopoulos, Sf Wamba, M Song

Plymouth Business School

There has been increasing interest from both academics and practitioners in sustainable consumption and production (SCP) behaviour. The literature has mainly focused on antecedents and indicators for SCP behaviour, but scholars are yet to develop frameworks that provide insights into SCP behaviour. To address this gap, this paper develops a theoretical model grounded in institutional and agency theories that explicates the role of top management beliefs and participation when dealing with institutional pressures that impact upon SCP behaviour by facilitating information sharing and reducing behavioural uncertainty. Based on a sample of 167 responses from a survey with Indian organizations, we …

Tools For Change: Boosting The Retention Of Women In The Stem Pipeline, Joan C. Williams, Katherine W. Phillips, Erika V. Hall

Faculty Scholarship

This study details how gender bias plays out in everyday workplace interactions in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). It is based on in-depth interviews with 60 women scientists of color (chiefly professors), and a survey of 557 women scientists (of all races). Different types of gender bias were reported at different rates. Prescriptive gender bias was most common (76.3% of women interviewed reported it), followed by descriptive gender bias (66.7%) and gender bias triggered by motherhood (64.0%); just over half of the women interviewed (55.3%) reported situations in which gender bias against women fueled conflicts among women. The survey …

An Innovative Approach To Assessing Professional Skills Learning Outcomes: A Uae Pilot Study, Kevin Schoepp, Maurice Danaher Jan 2016

An Innovative Approach To Assessing Professional Skills Learning Outcomes: A Uae Pilot Study, Kevin Schoepp, Maurice Danaher

All Works

This paper describes a pilot project in a computing college at a UAE university that was conducted to determine the feasibility of adapting a US-developed innovative approach to program level assessment of generic skills, 21st century, or general education learning outcomes. These learning outcomes are thought to comprise critical thinking, problem solving, global perspective, teamwork, and communication- ones that cross all disciplinary boundaries. The method of assessment utilized was an online discussion forum built around an open-ended computing scenario. Results indicated that this approach proved to be a success and demonstrated very clearly where the students' strengths and weaknesses resided. …
