Geography And Post-Phenomenology, James Ash, Paul Simpson Jan 2016

Geography And Post-Phenomenology, James Ash, Paul Simpson

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

This paper examines geography’s engagements with phenomenology. Tracing phenomenology’s influence, from early humanist reflections on the lifeworld to non-representational theories of practice, the paper identifies the emergence of a distinct post-phenomenological way of thinking. However, there is currently no clear articulation of what differentiates post-phenomenology from phenomenology as a set of theories or ideas, nor is there a clear set of trajectories along which such difference can be pursued further. In response to this, the paper outlines three key elements that differentiate phenomenology from post-phenomenology and that require further exploration. First is a rethinking of intentionality as an emergent relation …

Discrimination Amongst Arctic Indigenous Sámi And Non-Sámi Populations In Norway, Kl Hansen, S Minton, O Friborg, T Sørlie

School of Psychology

Background: Recent research demonstrates that for many indigenous Sami people, experiencing ethnic discrimination is a regular occurrence. The present study was designed to provide estimates of the prevalence of self-reported discrimination in order to identify specific settings where discrimination happened, to identify perpetrators and to examine individuals’ responses to the discrimination. Methods: In 2012, all inhabitants aged between 18 and 69 living in selected municipalities with both Sami and non-Sami settlements in mid- and northern Norway were mailed an invitation to participate in a questionnaire survey covering questions about discrimination (types of discrimination, settings where discrimination happened, and who the …

Exploring The Relationship Between Childhood Obesity And Proximity To The Coast: A Rural/Urban Perspective, Sophie L. Wood, Philippe R. Demougin, Sahran Higgins, Kerryn Husk, Benedict W. Wheeler, Mathew White

Peninsula Medical School

Abstract Childhood obesity is one of the 21st century's most serious global health challenges. Research suggests that better access to ‘greenspace’ (e.g. parks) may encourage physical activity and reduce the risk of obesity amongst children. We extend earlier work by considering childhood obesity in relation to proximity to the coast, using data from England's National Child Measurement Programme. Results suggest that although the overall prevalence of childhood obesity is slightly lower at the coast (−0.68% points comparing <1 km to >20 km, p<0.001), the relationship depends on area type. Specifically, although a coastal proximity gradient (lower obesity rates nearer the coast) was found for rural areas and smaller cities and towns, it was not present among large urban conurbations (interaction p-value<0.001). Coastal environments and access to them are changing in many areas, and research to explore potential impacts on child health is warranted.

Changes In The Eeg Amplitude As A Biomarker For Early Detection Of Alzheimer's Disease., Ali H. Al-Nuaimi, Emmanuel Jammeh, Lingfen Sun, Emmanuel Ifeachor Jan 2016

Changes In The Eeg Amplitude As A Biomarker For Early Detection Of Alzheimer's Disease., Ali H. Al-Nuaimi, Emmanuel Jammeh, Lingfen Sun, Emmanuel Ifeachor

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

The rapid increase in the number of older people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other forms of dementia represents one of the major challenges to the health and social care systems. Early detection of AD makes it possible for patients to access appropriate services and to benefit from new treatments and therapies, as and when they become available. The onset of AD starts many years before the clinical symptoms become clear. A biomarker that can measure the brain changes in this period would be useful for early diagnosis of AD. Potentially, the electroencephalogram (EEG) can play a valuable role in …

A "Mental Models" Approach To The Communication Of Subsurface Hydrology And Hazards, H Gibson, I Stewart, S Pahl, A Stokes Jan 2016

A "Mental Models" Approach To The Communication Of Subsurface Hydrology And Hazards, H Gibson, I Stewart, S Pahl, A Stokes

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Communicating information about geological and hydrological hazards relies on appropriately worded communications targeted at the needs of the audience. But what are these needs and how does the geoscientist discern them? This paper adopts a psychological "mental models" approach to assess the public perception of the geological subsurface and surveys three communities in the south-west of England about their attitudes and representations of the geological subsurface. The findings reveal important preconceptions and misconceptions regarding the impact of hydrological systems and hazards on the geological subsurface, notably in terms of the persistent conceptualisation of underground rivers and the inferred relations between …

From Characterising Three Years Of Hri To Methodology And Reporting Recommendations, P Baxter, J Kennedy, E Senft, S Lemaignan, T Belpaeme

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) research requires the integration and cooperation of multiple disciplines, technical and social, in order to make progress. In many cases using different motivations, each of these disciplines bring with them different assumptions and methodologies. We assess recent trends in the field of HRI by examining publications in the HRI conference over the past three years (over 100 full papers), and characterise them according to 14 categories. We focus primarily on aspects of methodology. From this, a series of practical recommendations based on rigorous guidelines from other research fields that have not yet become common practice in HRI …

Neurocutanoussarcoidosis: A Rare Entity, Muslim Ali Lakhiar, Manzoor Lakhiar, Abdul Hafeez Bughio

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Neurosarcoidosis is a granulomatous disorder considered to be a great imitator. We report a case of young lady who presented with gradual onset flexed posturing of fingers of left hand for four years, followed by similar pattern of weakness involving the right hand for three years along with slipping of slippers for one year. Neurologic examination showed distal wasting & weakness in upper limbs with normal jerks and sensory impairment in gloves and stocking distribution. On skin examination there were hypopigmented macules over face, neck and back. Electro diagnostic studies showed sensory motor axonal polyneuropathy, while skin biopsy reported as …

Mental Health Is Not A Luxury In Pakistan, Salma Kerai Jan 2016

Mental Health Is Not A Luxury In Pakistan, Salma Kerai

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

A day with a fever is taken serious enough to get off from work in contrast to a day with emotional distress. World health organization defines health as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. However, mental health is not seen as an integral part of overall well-being in many cultures.

Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension; Three Case Reports With Similar Clinical Manifestations, Treated Successfully Using Different Management Techniques., Ali Ilyas, Wasim Tariq, Anam Abrar, Muhammad Amjad, Muhammad Azhar Saeed, Inayatullah Khan

Pakistan Journal of Neurological Sciences (PJNS)

Spontaneous Intracranial hypotension (SIH) is a rare neurological disorder, characterized by orthostatic headaches. Due to the complicity of its diagnosis and lack of awareness amongst physicians, SIH remains an under-diagnosed disease and its true prevalence remains unknown. It is a reversible condition, if diagnosed early. Delay in diagnosis can result in life threatening complications.Case Reports:We present a case series of three patients who presented with typical symptoms of SIH. But management course of each patient varied. The first patient responded well to the EBP (epidural blood patch) while the second improved with conventional symptomatic treatment. The third patient needed a …

The Effects Of Maturational Variation On The Performance Of Young Australian Footballers And Their Selection Into The Australian Football League's Talent Pathway, Ashley Cripps Jan 2016

The Effects Of Maturational Variation On The Performance Of Young Australian Footballers And Their Selection Into The Australian Football League's Talent Pathway, Ashley Cripps

Theses

Traditional player development pathways share a common goal, to identify and accelerate the development of talented adolescent players for senior competition. Players who gain selection into development programs gain greater access to experienced coaches, training facilities, support staff and competition. However, despite such advantages, research has shown that few players who gain initial selection into development pathways progress into professional senior competition. A major factor which potentially contributes to poor player retention in development pathways is the initial misidentification of talented athletes due to variations in biological maturity.

Earlier maturing individuals have been shown to be at a physical advantage …

'Aiding Gli Ebrei' - Delasem Under Fascism, 1939 To 1945, Laura Bava

Theses

This study investigated how the organisation Delasem (‘Delegazione Assistenza Emigrati Ebrei’) operated unrestricted in their support of Jewish people under Mussolini’s Fascist regime between 1939 and 1943. It includes a brief historical background of Italy that focuses on the life of Jewish people since their first arrival in Italy about 2000 years ago. This historical section was presented so that the reader could understand Italian culture and its changing attitude to Italian and non-Italian Jewish people in Italy. This section outlined the circumstances of Italian Jews under Mussolini’s Fascist regime that resulted in Delasem’s formation and the flood of Jewish …

Towards The Identification Of Metabolite Markers Of Nipple Pain And Inflammation In Human Milk, Erin Fee Jan 2016

Towards The Identification Of Metabolite Markers Of Nipple Pain And Inflammation In Human Milk, Erin Fee

Theses

Background: Human milk is considered the best source of nutrition for all newborns as it contains important growth, developmental and immunological factors. The WHO (2003) recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of age, with complementary breastfeeding up to two years and beyond. However, some women experience complications of the breast that lead to early cessation of breastfeeding, which can adversely affect the well being of the developing infant and her own health.

Nipple pain is the most commonly cited reason for weaning in the first week postpartum. Nipple pain is also linked to mastitis from milk stasis and …

"Not Marching Now In Fields Of Thrasymene": Producing Christopher Marlowe's Doctor Faustus For The Modern Stage, Patrick C. Barton

Theses

This thesis offers theatre practitioners a method for approaching Christopher Marlowe’s performance texts. Doctor Faustus is offered as a case study. Within it I provide a brief account of Marlowe’s education, identifying the key influencing factors that led to his resultant compositions. A discussion of the variant texts of Doctor Faustus follows, which provides the reader with an understanding of the text and its context. Various approaches to the text are explored and reviewed in their degree of success. My purpose is to identify the most significant aspects of Marlowe’s text and to offer a method of approach to production …
