Academia Meeting The Needs Of Industry: A Case Study Of Developing A New Degree Program For Petroleum Engineering, Rosemary Vogt Jan 2016

Academia Meeting The Needs Of Industry: A Case Study Of Developing A New Degree Program For Petroleum Engineering, Rosemary Vogt

Theses and Dissertations

The recent oil boom in western North Dakota’s Bakken formation in the Williston Basin resulted in numerous opportunities for skilled professionals (for which an academic credential is required) in petroleum engineering. Oil and gas industries operating in the state approached leaders at the University of North Dakota (UND) with the request to develop a petroleum engineering program for the purpose of contributing to the need for a skilled workforce in the state. In 2012, the North Dakota State Board of Higher Education approved a new Department of Petroleum Engineering at the University of North Dakota. What is unknown or understood …

Factors That Influence Community College Student Perceptions Of Their Instruction Following Behaviors In Online Courses, Vickie Volk Jan 2016

Factors That Influence Community College Student Perceptions Of Their Instruction Following Behaviors In Online Courses, Vickie Volk

Theses and Dissertations

Enrollments in online courses offered in community colleges have sharply increased over the past decade. At the same time, it appears there is a growing trend toward community college students displaying a tendency to incorrectly and/or incompletely read and follow instructions in online courses. The ability to follow instructions has a direct impact on the success of students in online classes. This study examined factors that influence community college student perceptions of their instruction following behaviors in online courses using self-regulated learning as the theoretical framework. Participants were 102 students enrolled in general education online courses at a Great Plains …

Effect Of Bridging Group Of Dianhydride Precursor On Resulting Thermally Rearranged Polybenzoxazole For Removal Of Nitrogen From Natural Gas, Tucker Woock Jan 2016

Effect Of Bridging Group Of Dianhydride Precursor On Resulting Thermally Rearranged Polybenzoxazole For Removal Of Nitrogen From Natural Gas, Tucker Woock

Theses and Dissertations

Membrane separation is an excellent potential method for purification of natural gas. Multiple polymers have been studied for use in natural gas separation, and two stand above the rest: polyimide and polybenzoxazole. It was found that the selection of monomer precursors could influence the separation properties and resistances of the resultant polyimide and polybenzoxazole membranes. Polybenzoxazole has even better separation properties than polyimide due to the size and distribution of its free volume elements. Methods to influence these properties are similar to those used with polyimides. The intent of this thesis was to compare different dianhydride precursors. My research attempted …

Differential Executive Functioning, Impulsivity, And Motivation In Adulthood As A Function Of Experienced Child Abuse, Christopher Anton Mark

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: While child abuse can only occur before the ages 18, there are long term neurological repercussions that can cause severe detriment to the abused individual. More specifically, normative neurological development during childhood is impeded upon, thus resulting in cognitive and emotional abnormalities in adulthood. Methods: The present study recruited 43 students from the University of North Dakota (Females = 23) with an age range of 18-23 years of age (M = 19.6 years, SD = 1.545). The participants were administered several prescreening measures, including a measure of physical child abuse, emotional child abuse, and sexual child abuse. Based on …

From Apology To Utopia's Point Of Attack, Justin Deystone Jan 2016

From Apology To Utopia's Point Of Attack, Justin Deystone

Publications

This contribution to the Symposium celebrating the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of Martti Koskenniemi's From Apology to Utopia explores the relevance of the book for contemporary theorists of the international world. In doing so, the article puts Koskenniemi's classic in a contest with John Yoo's recent book, Point of Attack. The purpose in doing so is three-fold. First, it is to illustrate the contemporary use of Koskenniemi's structuralist method. Second, it is to show how the use of the method, with its attendant reliance on modes of legal thought, might give pause to international thinkers seeking to reinvigorate particular structures of …

In The Shadows Of Sunlight: The Effects Of Transparency On State Political Campaigns, Abby K. Wood, Douglas M. Spencer Jan 2016

In The Shadows Of Sunlight: The Effects Of Transparency On State Political Campaigns, Abby K. Wood, Douglas M. Spencer

Publications

In recent years, the courts have invalidated a variety of campaign finance laws while simultaneously upholding disclosure requirements. Courts view disclosure as a less-restrictive means to root out corruption while critics claim that disclosure chills speech and deters political participation. Using individual-level contribution data from state elections between 2000 and 2008, we find that the speech-chilling effects of disclosure are negligible. On average, less than one donor per candidate is likely to stop contributing when the public visibility of campaign contributions increases. Moreover, we do not observe heterogeneous effects for small donors or ideological outliers despite an assumption in First …

Indigenous Law And Aboriginal Title, Kent Mcneil Jan 2016

Indigenous Law And Aboriginal Title, Kent Mcneil

All Papers

This paper discusses the relevance of Indigenous law to Aboriginal title in Canada, as revealed in three leading Supreme Court decisions: Delgamuukw v. British Columbia (1997), R. v. Marshall; R. v. Bernard (2005), and Tsilhqot’in Nation v. British Columbia (2014). It concludes that Indigenous law relates to Aboriginal title in two ways: it is part of the evidence that can be relied upon to establish the exclusive occupation necessary for title at the time of Crown assertion of sovereignty, and it continues thereafter to govern the communal land rights of the Aboriginal titleholders. Moreover, the content of Indigenous law is …

Animal Rights Unraveled: Why Abolitionism Collapses Into Welfarism And What It Means For Animal Ethics, Luis E. Chiesa Jan 2016

Animal Rights Unraveled: Why Abolitionism Collapses Into Welfarism And What It Means For Animal Ethics, Luis E. Chiesa

Journal Articles

Most people support laws that seek to reduce the suffering of animals. Yet animal cruelty statutes and other kinds of animal welfare laws are under sustained attack by the so-called abolitionists. Animal rights abolitionists claim that it is categorically wrong to treat animals as commodities, and animal welfare laws should be opposed because they do not alter the property status of animals. Abolitionists also claim that animal welfare regulations do not meaningfully reduce animal suffering. In fact, abolitionists argue that such statutes likely increase future animal suffering, either by delaying the advent of abolition or by soothing the conscience of …

Truthiness And The Marble Palace, Chad M. Oldfather, Todd C. Peppers Jan 2016

Truthiness And The Marble Palace, Chad M. Oldfather, Todd C. Peppers

Emory Law Journal Online

Tucked inside the title page of David Lat's Supreme Ambitions, just after a note giving credit for the cover design and before the copyright notice, sits a standard disclaimer of the sort that appears in all novels: 'This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places, and events either are the products of the author's imagination or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, events or locales is entirely coincidental.' These may be the most truly fictional words in the entire book. Supreme Ambitions' observations about judging, clerking, prestige and the culture of elite law schools …

The Case In Favor Of Civil Justice Reform, Victor E. Schwartz, Cary Silverman Jan 2016

The Case In Favor Of Civil Justice Reform, Victor E. Schwartz, Cary Silverman

Emory Law Journal Online

In October 2015, Emory University School of Law hosted a provocatively titled symposium, 'The `War' on the U.S. Civil Justice System.' The program was co-sponsored by the Pound Civil Justice Institute, a 'think tank' founded and controlled by leaders of the plaintiffs' bar that advocates for expansions in liability through presenting legal education seminars and publishing papers. The introduction to the symposium edition waxes nostalgic for the civil justice system of '[a] half-century ago,' which was 'a much-admired, well-organized process for resolving disputes, generally in public, before juries and independent judges.' As this Essay will show, at that time, the …

Response To Tuerkheimer: Rape On And Off Campus: The Vulnerable Subject Of Rape Law: Rethinking Agency And Consent, Stu Marvel Jan 2016

Response To Tuerkheimer: Rape On And Off Campus: The Vulnerable Subject Of Rape Law: Rethinking Agency And Consent, Stu Marvel

Emory Law Journal Online

Tuerkheimer's article for the Emory Law Journal, Rape On and Off Campus, extends her earlier work on sexual agency, consent, and the inadequate nature of U.S. rape law to examine the disconnect between widely acknowledged cultural norms around sex, and the stubborn recalcitrance of rape laws to social reform. This response applies some of the insights of vulnerability theory to Tuerkheimer's piece with the goal of extending these important conversations into new analytical fields. The theory provides a useful vantage upon the systemic and historical patterns of inequality that lead to violence against women, as well as the legal and …

Telling Refugee Stories: Trauma, Credibility, And The Adversarial Adjudication Of Claims For Asylum, Stephen Paskey Jan 2016

Telling Refugee Stories: Trauma, Credibility, And The Adversarial Adjudication Of Claims For Asylum, Stephen Paskey

Journal Articles

When trauma survivors seek asylum in the United States, the deck is stacked against them. In most cases, the applicant’s story is the only direct evidence of the applicant’s claim, and asylum is certain to be denied if a judge finds the applicant not credible. But the stories told by trauma survivors defy cultural norms for a credible story: they are often inconsistent, vague, and both logically and chronologically disjointed. As a result, asylum may be wrongly denied. The problem is inherent in our asylum adjudication system, which subjects most applicants to an adversarial hearing.

A Conservation Genetic Study Of Cercopithecus Mitis In The Lomami Basin, Democratic Republic Of The Congo, Ailissa Leroy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The Cercopithecus mitis radiation has significant phenotypic and ecological diversity, making it a great candidate for evolutionary genetic studies. This study represents the first genetic survey of C. mitis from well provenanced wild populations, including C. mitis heymansi from the TL2 landscape, an area of remote tropical forest between the Tshuapa, Lomami, and Lualaba rivers in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Tissue samples were collected from 7 male blue monkeys, DNA was extracted and surveyed at 919 bp of the Testis-Specific Protein Y-chromosome (TSPY), and added to a larger dataset including other C. mitis and C. albogularis specimens. Evolutionary …

A Computational Study On Different Penalty Approaches For Constrained Optimization In Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning With A Simulated Annealing Algorithm, Khoroushadi Mohammad Sadegh Mohammadi Jan 2016

A Computational Study On Different Penalty Approaches For Constrained Optimization In Radiation Therapy Treatment Planning With A Simulated Annealing Algorithm, Khoroushadi Mohammad Sadegh Mohammadi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a cancer treatment method in which the intensities of the radiation beams are modulated; therefore these beams have non-uniform radiation intensities. The overall result is the delivery of the prescribed dose in the target volume. The dose distribution is conformal to the shape of the target and minimizes the dose to the nearby critical organs. An inverse planning algorithm is used to obtain those non-uniform beam intensities. In inverse treatment planning, the treatment plan is achieved by using an optimization process. The optimized plan results to a high-quality dose distribution in the planning target …

A Comparative Study On The Tensile Properties Of Shark Skin, Shelby Creager Jan 2016

A Comparative Study On The Tensile Properties Of Shark Skin, Shelby Creager

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Our goal was to assess regional differences in denticle density and skin tensile properties in four coastal species of shark. We hypothesized that the denticle density, tensile strength (MPa), stiffness (MPa), and toughness of skin (MJ·m^-3) would vary regionally along the body of an individual and among species. An hourglass-shaped punch was used to extract the skin samples at 10 anatomical landmarks and denticle density was quantified. Denticle density varied significantly among both regions and species, and showed a significant species by region interaction. Skin samples were tested in tension at a strain rate of 2 mm-s until failure. We …

A Content Analysis On Police Killings Of Unarmed Black Males: An Assessment On Experts' Quotes In National News Sources, Christopher Fulcher

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

There is increasing concern in news media sources regarding police killings of unarmed Black males. However, there is limited research on the portrayal of such incidents in the news and the implications for police-community relations in African- American communities. In order to address this gap, this study analyzed 120 experts’ quotes provided by two of the largest and most respected newspapers in the United States -- the New York Times and USA Today. This research comprised a content analysis of quotes related to the deaths of Eric Garner (Staten Island, New York), Michael Brown (Ferguson, Missouri), and Freddie Gray (Baltimore …

A Network Of Ideas: Brokerage And Success Among Visual Artists In South Florida, Patricia Hoyos Jan 2016

A Network Of Ideas: Brokerage And Success Among Visual Artists In South Florida, Patricia Hoyos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study looks at artists’ careers as paths defined by their relative position in a dynamic professional network where innovation and creativity are highly regarded. Today, the theoretical and empirical study of networks has demonstrated that in some professions the individuals’ position in the network can facilitate or constrain their success. In studies about diffusion of information, for instance, some authors have found that individuals connected to a greater variety of sources are more creative and perform better. I explored this idea by looking at a network of visual artists and art institutions in Miami, and found a positive correlation …

Cfd Study Of Pectoral Fins Of Larval Zebrafish: Effect Of Reynolds Number, Swimming Kinematics And Fin Bending On Fluid Structures And Transport., Toukir Islam

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Flow Structure and fluid transport via advection around pectoral fin of larval ZebraFish are studied numerically using Immersed Boundary Method, Lagrangian Coherent Structure, passive particle tracing, vortex core evolution and four statistically defined mixing numbers. Experimental fish kinematics for nominal swimming case are obtained from previous researchers and numerically manipulated to analyze the role of different body motion kinematics, Reynolds number and fin morphology on flow structure and transport. Hyperbolic strain field and vortex cores are found to be effective particle transporter and their relative strength are driving force of varying flow structure and fluid transport. Translation and lateral undulation …

Can I Ask For Help? The Relationship Among Incarcerated Males’ Sexual Orientation, Incarceration History, And Perceptions Of Rape In Prison, Mina Ratkalkar Jan 2016

Can I Ask For Help? The Relationship Among Incarcerated Males’ Sexual Orientation, Incarceration History, And Perceptions Of Rape In Prison, Mina Ratkalkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In 2003, Congress passed the Prison Rape Elimination Act to address the problem of sexual violence in prison. Although research has shed light on the prevalence and incidence of sexual violence in U.S. prisons, few studies examine inmates’ perceptions of rape and safety from rape in prison. This study examined rape perceptions and the likelihood to seek mental health treatment in prison of three distinct groups of male inmates who are at greater risk of sexual victimization or exposure to sexual violence while incarcerated: gay and bisexual inmates, inmates with a juvenile incarceration history, and inmates who were first incarcerated …

Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages From Pulau Karangmadjat, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, Christine N. Garcia Jan 2016

Benthic Foraminiferal Assemblages From Pulau Karangmadjat, Mentawai Islands, Indonesia, Christine N. Garcia

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Globally, coral reefs are in severe decline (Jackson et al., 2001) and face potential extinction of 1/3 of reef species by 2050 (Veron, 2011). This decline is the result of the inability of coral communities to recover after disturbance events, often resulting in a shift from coral- to macro-algal dominated regimes. Reef resources managers are in need of tools to assess the condition of these ecosystems prior to, during, and post disturbance, especially in regions of the world where coral cover and diversity are high, yet management resources are scarce. Foraminifera have been widely utilized as bioindicators in both modern …

Chitin Microparticles (Cmps) Induce M1 Macrophage Activation Via Intracellular Tlr2 Signaling Mechanism, Spring Davis Jan 2016

Chitin Microparticles (Cmps) Induce M1 Macrophage Activation Via Intracellular Tlr2 Signaling Mechanism, Spring Davis

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Chitin Microparticles (CMPs, 1-10um), a special form of the ubiquitous and nontoxic polysaccharide Chitin (GlcNAc), is capable of inducing a switch in macrophages from the wound-healing M2 phenotype to the classically activated pro-inflammatory M1 phenotype; which has therapeutic implications in allergy and cancer. We hypothesized that TLR2 forms a complex with CMPs and Chitin-Binding Proteins (CBPs) at the surface of peritoneal macrophages and remains with that complex after internalization to initiate downstream signaling events, leading to the production of the M1 cytokine, TNFalpha. Our results from experiments performed in RAW 264.7 cells show that TLR2 and TLR1, but not TLR6, …

Care At Work: A Feminist Analysis Of The Long-Term Care Industry In The United States, Rachel Tunick Jan 2016

Care At Work: A Feminist Analysis Of The Long-Term Care Industry In The United States, Rachel Tunick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This research provides a feminist perspective on the lowest paid sector of the United States long-term care industry, Certified Nursing Assistants. This research adds to current feminist scholarship on the modern professional caregiving industry by focusing on the perspective of the workers. As the population of older adults requiring care is expected to increase over the coming decades, the demand for paid caregivers will increase as well. Historically, care work was an expected duty done freely by the women of the family, but today much of the vital intimate caring labor is relegated to paid caregivers. I examine how alternative …

Cinematic Portrayals Of Ancient Women: Cleopatra Vii, Livia Augusta, Servilia Caepionis And The Three Waves Of Feminism, Andrea Schwab Jan 2016

Cinematic Portrayals Of Ancient Women: Cleopatra Vii, Livia Augusta, Servilia Caepionis And The Three Waves Of Feminism, Andrea Schwab

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This project examines the modern perception of ancient women, specifically through the creative (and often anachronistic) lens of film. All three women examined, Cleopatra VII, Livia Augusta, and Servilia Caepionis, all exemplify the modern influence on interpreting historical sources, resulting in all three becoming agents of feminism in their own times. Each woman did not culminate the probable influence they had in Roman society, but they are instead reflective of the patriarchal paradigms understood by 20th and 21st century audiences. The burgeoning feminist ideologies of the 20th century would influence the depictions of each character in an anachronistic fashion, distorting …

Charge Regulation Of A Surface Immersed In An Electrolyte Solution, Pramod Acharya Jan 2016

Charge Regulation Of A Surface Immersed In An Electrolyte Solution, Pramod Acharya

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In this thesis, we investigate theoretically a new model of charge regulation of a single charged planar surface immersed in an aqueous electrolyte solution. Assuming that the adsorbed ions are mobile in the charged plane, we formulate a field theory of charge regulation where the numbers of adsorbed ions can be determined consistently by equating the chemical potentials of the adsorbed ions to that of the ions in the bulk. We analyze the mean-field treatment of the model for electrolyte of arbitrary valences, and then beyond, where correlation effects are systematically taken into account in a loop expansion. In particular, …

A Longitudinal Latent Profile Analysis Of Adolescent Popularity: A Test Of The Bistrategic Hypothesis, Amy C. Hartl Jan 2016

A Longitudinal Latent Profile Analysis Of Adolescent Popularity: A Test Of The Bistrategic Hypothesis, Amy C. Hartl

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

As children enter adolescence, social status within the peer hierarchy gains importance. Variable-oriented research has linked adolescent popularity with both positive and negative adjustment outcomes. Popularity may be better understood with reference to types or subgroups of similar individuals, identified through person-oriented approaches. Resource Control Theory (RCT: Hawley, 1999) posits three distinct types of popular adolescents: coercive, prosocial, and bistrategic. The existence and adjustment correlates of the prosocial and coercive groups have been well-established, but little evidence supports the existence of a bistrategic popular group of adolescents, and even less is known about their adjustment correlates. The present study aims …

An Algorithm For The Automated Interpretation Of Cardiac Auscultation, Claude Lieber Jan 2016

An Algorithm For The Automated Interpretation Of Cardiac Auscultation, Claude Lieber

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Cardiac auscultation, an important part of the physical examination, is difficult for many primary care providers. As a result, diagnoses are missed or auscultatory signs misinterpreted. A reliable, automated means of interpreting cardiac auscultation should be of benefit to both the primary care provider and to patients. This paper explores a novel approach to this problem and develops an algorithm that can be expanded to include all the necessary electronics and programming to develop such a device. The algorithm is explained and its shortcomings exposed. The potential for further development is also expounded.

Allusions, Khaulah Naima Nuruddin Jan 2016

Allusions, Khaulah Naima Nuruddin

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Allusions explores the volatile nature of intimate relationships by revisiting and recovering my memory of dramatic experiences in my own intimate relationships then translating them into painted psychological scenes. These scenes are activated by symbolically charged objects and interrupted by openings or portals serving as points of entry or exit. The people involved are referred to by pieces of carefully chosen furniture situated in a space that has shifting perspectives and illogical planes, referencing the complexity of memory and the subjectivity of experience. Discordant color, texture, and layered information are used to heighten the drama of the moment. These painted …

A Study On The Potential Role Of Stress Granules And Processing Bodies In Eliminating Oxidatively Damaged Rna, Delaram Pourkalbassi Jan 2016

A Study On The Potential Role Of Stress Granules And Processing Bodies In Eliminating Oxidatively Damaged Rna, Delaram Pourkalbassi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Oxidative stress (OS) is strongly implicated in age-related neurodegeneration and other diseases. Under OS, the production of excessive oxidants leads to increased damages to cellular components. Recently, RNA has been discovered as a major target of oxidative damage, including the creation of abasic sites. In this work, we developed a method for quantifying abasic RNA in cell. Using this method, we have examined the potential role of the RNA-processing cellular foci, stress granule (SG) and processing bodies (PB) in eliminating abasic RNA in situ. We demonstrated that RNA is a major target of oxidative damage, constituting the majority of OS-induced …
