Sediment Transport And Bedform Dynamics In Rip Currents, Antony Thorpe

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Simultaneous in-situ measurements of waves, currents, water depth, suspended sediment concentrations and bed profiles were made in a rip channel on Perranporth Beach, Cornwall, UK. Perranporth is a high energy beach (annual offshore Hs = 1.6 m) which is macro-tidal (mean spring range = 6.3 m) and the grain size is medium sand (D50 = 0.28 – 0.34 mm). It can be classified as a low tide bar – rip beach and exhibits a relatively flat inter-tidal zone with pronounced rhythmic low tide bar - rip morphology. Data were collected over two field campaigns, totalling 14 tidal cycles and including …

Accelerating Equity Retirement In Rural Electric Cooperatives, Jeffrey S. Royer Jan 2016

Accelerating Equity Retirement In Rural Electric Cooperatives, Jeffrey S. Royer

Cornhusker Economics

Electric cooperatives serve an estimated 42 million people in the United States by providing power to 18.5 million businesses, homes, schools, churches, farms, irrigation systems, and other customers. They deliver 11 percent of the electric power sold in this country, operating in 47 states and 80 percent of all counties. Electric cooperatives serve their members through the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. Power supply cooperatives (also called generation and transmission or G&T cooperatives) are engaged in the generation or purchase of electricity and the transmission of wholesale electricity to distribution cooperatives, which carry electricity to retail customers. There are …

Property Rights Issues In Cooperatives, Konstantinos Giannakas, Harold W. Eberhard Jan 2016

Property Rights Issues In Cooperatives, Konstantinos Giannakas, Harold W. Eberhard

Cornhusker Economics

Cooperative organizations (this includes clubs and professional partnerships) play an important role in the economy, often bridging the gap that exists between the purely public and the purely private in the provision of goods. This has been particularly true in agriculture, where cooperative organizations have emerged to deal primarily with market failures such as oligopsonistic pricing.

The collective nature of cooperative organizations creates two key property rights issues: the free rider problem and the horizon problem. In agricultural cooperatives free rider problems emerge in raising investment funds at formation and later for growth and expansion during operation; in both cases, …

Successful Extension Meetings And Innovative Economic Research: Grain Marketing Simulations, Stamatina Kotsakou, Cory Walters, Simanti Banerjee Jan 2016

Successful Extension Meetings And Innovative Economic Research: Grain Marketing Simulations, Stamatina Kotsakou, Cory Walters, Simanti Banerjee

Cornhusker Economics

While grain marketing is considered a difficult challenge facing producers every year, it represents a very important component for producers to convert their bushels into dollars and ensure farm survival. Grain marketing involves both strategic behavior and knowledge of the grain market. Local and global supply and demand conditions, grain storage costs, transportation costs etc. present constantly changing risk and reward opportunities for producers. Efficient training and consistent monitoring of the market can help producers reduce risk (i.e., reduce the chance of farm failure) by making good use of pricing opportunities. Since these concepts may not necessarily be intuitive and …

Public Perceptions Of Genetically Engineered Nutraceuticals, Kofi Britwum, Amalia Yiannaka

Cornhusker Economics

The 2016 World Food Prize was awarded in October to four scientists for their pioneering work on bio-fortification — a process of enhancing traditional foods with micronutrients, particularly vitamins and minerals, through conventional selective breeding or genetic engineering. Three of the laureates who work in African countries bred and championed the orangefleshed sweet potatoes1. Although not native to the African continent, the orange-fleshed sweet potato is enhanced with beta-carotene to boost vitamin A content and combat vitamin A deficiency, a health challenge in many developing countries.

Point-Of-Purchase Efforts To Increase Healthy Food Choice, Christopher Gustafson Jan 2016

Point-Of-Purchase Efforts To Increase Healthy Food Choice, Christopher Gustafson

Cornhusker Economics

The prevalence of overweight and obesity in the U.S. population has increased steadily over the past four decades, impacting health, livelihoods, and quality of life. Recent estimates of U.S. adult and childhood overweight and obesity rates suggest that nearly 35 percent of adults are obese and another 34 percent are overweight, while 17 percent of children are obese and 15 percent overweight. Obesity is associated with a number of negative consequences that impact both the individual and society. These consequences include poorer health, an increased risk of associated non-communicable diseases, such as type-2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, and heart …

Payoff Of Corn/Soybean Rotation In Western Nebraska, Matthew Stockton, Devin Broadhead Jan 2016

Payoff Of Corn/Soybean Rotation In Western Nebraska, Matthew Stockton, Devin Broadhead

Cornhusker Economics

Corn and soybeans are the two most common crops grown in Nebraska. Some farmers in the western part of the state plant continuous corn with few that plant continuous soybeans. In most cases some type of corn/soybean rotation is practiced. Idealistically speaking crop rotations should be producer and site specific, matching physical geography, resource availability and management capability. This work focuses on the difference in profitability among four possible rotations.

Radioprotective Cerium Oxide Nanoparticles: Molecular Imaging Investigations Of Conps’ Pharmacokinetics, Efficacy, And Mechanisms Of Action, Philip R. Mcdonagh Iii

Theses and Dissertations

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CONPs) are being investigated for several anti-oxidant applications in medicine. One of their most promising applications is as a radioprotective drug, an area of research in need due to the severe side effects from radiation therapy. In this work, the potential of CONPs as a radioprotective drug is examined using four criteria: favorable biodistribution/pharmacokinetics, low toxicity, ability to protect normal tissue from radiation damage, and lack of protection of tumor. The mechanisms of action of CONPs are also studied. Biodistribution was determined in radiolabeled CONPs with surface coatings including citrate, dextran T10-amine (DT10-NH2), dextran T10-polyethylene …

Evaluation Of Redox Potential As A Novel Biomarker Of Oxidative Stress, Inflammatory Response, And Shock Using Nanoporous Gold Electrodes, Matthew C. Ellenberg

Theses and Dissertations

EVALUATION OF REDOX POTENTIAL AS A NOVEL BIOMARKER OF OXIDATIVE STRESS, INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE, AND SHOCK USING NANOPOROUS GOLD ELECTRODES

Background: Redox potential is a chemical species’ affinity for electrons. Increased oxidant concentration is associated with disease1,2, yet there is not a way to measure systemic redox status.3 Redox potentiometry uses metal electrodes that do not work in blood because protein molecules adhere on the metal surface, blocking electron exchange.

Methods: Nanoporous gold electrodes have large surface areas that allowed electron exchange to continue in blood.4 Redox potential was measured in blood with ascorbic acid, in cardiac bypass patients and pigs …

Host Densities And Parasitism Rates In A Forest Defoliator Across A Rural-Urban Landscape, Abigail J. Nelson Jan 2016

Host Densities And Parasitism Rates In A Forest Defoliator Across A Rural-Urban Landscape, Abigail J. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

Fall cankerworm (FCW) outbreaks have recently increased in frequency and intensity in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, especially around cities of Charlotte, NC and Richmond, VA. This study evaluated the effects of two landscape features associated with urbanization, impervious surface and forest cover, on population patterns of FCW and its parasitoids across eastern Virginia. Forest cover was positively related to parasitism rates while impervious surface was positively related to FCW abundance, suggesting that FCW outbreaks may be amplified in urban areas. FCW abundance declined over the two-year period of this study, but parasitism rate increased at most sites. …

Evaluation Of Highly Viscous Polymeric Fluids And Recrosslinked Degraded Gel, Danlu Zhang Jan 2016

Evaluation Of Highly Viscous Polymeric Fluids And Recrosslinked Degraded Gel, Danlu Zhang

Masters Theses

”This work presents the evaluations of two products. One can be used for hydraulic fracturing to achieve viscosity stable under high shear rate, and the other is potential to be applied to enhance oil recovery from mature oilfield.

The first experiment is to synthesize and evaluate a new polymeric fracturing fluid that can resist high shear rate of 511-1 with favorable viscosity. Zirconium crosslinked fracturing fluids are lack of self-healing ability after shearing, and the difficulties still exist in maintaining viscous with lower polymer content exposed to high shearing conditions, therefore, the research is trying to develop a new …

Gravity And Magnetic Investigations Of The North-Eastern Kansas Section Of The Midcontinent Rift System, Ozgun Kamil Sahin Jan 2016

Gravity And Magnetic Investigations Of The North-Eastern Kansas Section Of The Midcontinent Rift System, Ozgun Kamil Sahin

Masters Theses

"The Midcontinent Rift System (MRS) is a major Precambrian magmatic province on the North American continent. It formed when the North American craton began to split apart during the Mesoproterozoic era (1,100 Ma). As a result of the extension and possibly the effects of a rising mantle plume, a thick layer of basalt and numerous reverse and normal faults were formed. The basalt layer is buried below sedimentary formations and makes it difficult for seismic techniques to image. On the other hand, gravity and magnetic methods can be utilized for focused depths, and the basalt layer of the system can …
