The Effect Of Menstrual Cycle Phase On Appetite-Regulating Hormones, Logan Townsend
The Effect Of Menstrual Cycle Phase On Appetite-Regulating Hormones, Logan Townsend
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Background: Obesity rates are higher among females than males potentially due to changing food intake across the menstrual cycle. Food intake is partially regulated by circulating appetite-regulating hormones that can be influenced by the menstrual hormones estradiol and progesterone. Purpose: Examine whether changes in female sex hormones across the menstrual cycle are related to appetite-regulating hormones. Methods: 8 healthy young females were tested during the follicular, ovulatory, and luteal phases; phases were confirmed by fasting plasma hormone concentrations. Blood samples were taken after an overnight fast, as well as 30, 60, and 90 min post-prandially to test the concentrations of …
Holding Canada Accountable: An Evaluation Of Canada's Compliance To The United Nations Declaration On The Rights Of Indigenous Peoples, Jackson A. Smith
Holding Canada Accountable: An Evaluation Of Canada's Compliance To The United Nations Declaration On The Rights Of Indigenous Peoples, Jackson A. Smith
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Compliance of human rights norms requires the application of pressure from a multitude of directions and levels. It takes individual advocacy, micro-system/organizational/community-level pressure, and macro-level pressure from other nation-states and international organizations and governance bodies. This MA study focuses on the mechanisms employed by the United Nations to monitor the compliance of signatory nation-states to the standards established in the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), with particular focus on Canada. A crucial goal of this study is to translate the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNSRRIP), James Anaya’s, findings on the …
Representations Of Stranger And Non-Stranger Homicide: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Canadian News Media, Gabriella L. Leone
Representations Of Stranger And Non-Stranger Homicide: A Qualitative Content Analysis Of Canadian News Media, Gabriella L. Leone
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
The news media play a significant role in shaping public narratives about homicide by the particular incidents that journalists choose to report – or not report – on. Newspapers, in particular, lack the benefit of constant imagery, special effects, and live-action reporting that T.V. news reports have, and, as a result, forces newspapers to construct sensational and newsworthy homicide stories in order to be competitive and gain readership. To achieve this, newspapers often disproportionately report on bizarre and atypical homicide incidents, which most frequently involve a stranger or unknown assailant. While there is substantive literature surrounding the newsworthiness of homicide …
Chemical Removal Of Total Phosphorus From Wastewater To Low Levels And Its Analysis, Farah Ateeq
Chemical Removal Of Total Phosphorus From Wastewater To Low Levels And Its Analysis, Farah Ateeq
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Numerous studies have been conducted on the removal of inorganic phosphorus (P) from wastewater, but a push towards lower effluent targets necessitates the additional removal of organic phosphorus as well. This study tested the ability of manganese oxide nanoparticles and iron oxide as potential catalysts for conversion of organic P into more readily removable inorganic forms, as well as the role of iron(III) chloride as coagulant to subsequently allow P to be removed by solids/liquid separation. Removals of 99-101% were obtained for model compounds at pH 5-7, 0.05-0.5 M H2O2, and Fe:P molar ratio of 5:1. …

Factors considered during decision-making and implementation are also reviewed.
Translation As (Global) Writing, Bruce Horner, Laura Tetreault
Translation As (Global) Writing, Bruce Horner, Laura Tetreault
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This article explores translation as a useful point of departure and frame- work for taking a translingual approach to writing engaging globalization. Globalization and the knowledge economy are putting renewed emphasis on translation as a key site of contest between a dominant language ideology of monolingualism aligned with fast capitalist neoliberalism and an emerging language ideology variously identified as translingualism, plurilingualism, translanguaging, and transcultural literacy. We first distinguish between theories of translation aligned with neoliberalism, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, a critical approach to translation focused on the difference that a translingual approach insists translation makes …
Reasons To Care About Reasons For Action: A Response To Paul S. Davies, Glenn "Boomer" Mac Trujillo
Reasons To Care About Reasons For Action: A Response To Paul S. Davies, Glenn "Boomer" Mac Trujillo
Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In eschewing the specialty-standards of neuro-babble and philosophical neologism, Paul S. Davies (2016) argues with courageous clarity. He connects issues in neuroscience and epistemology to problems surrounding agency. I agree with many of his claims, but I think they need more context and precision for application. This is because his argument as it stands now affects only a limited set of theories, and a hidden modality in thesis 3 tempers his argument further. And perhaps most urgently, if his theory fails to address “top-down”1 mental processes or social dimensions of knowledge, his argument fails to meet even his own goals …
Dominant Discourses And Language Socialization In The Literacy Practices Of A Spanish-Speaking Church, Katherine Christoffersen
Dominant Discourses And Language Socialization In The Literacy Practices Of A Spanish-Speaking Church, Katherine Christoffersen
Writing and Language Studies Faculty Publications
Over the years, research has investigated language in communities, schools and homes, community programs and to a lesser degree research investigates language use in religious communities. In particular, there is a lack of research on religious language and literacy practices in Hispanic communities, especially those in the United States, although incipient work has revealed the importance of religious literacy among women Mexican immigrants (Farr, 2000) and for the socialization of children into a Mexican identity (Baquedano-López, 1997). Given the hostile local sociopolitical environment of Spanish in the state of Arizona in the Southwestern United States, the church is one of …
Top-Down Bank Capital Regulation, Heidi Mandanis Schooner
Top-Down Bank Capital Regulation, Heidi Mandanis Schooner
Scholarly Articles
In proposing a top-down system of capital regulation, this Article shares a precautionary attitude toward bank regulation found increasingly in post-Financial Crisis scholarship. The viewpoint is one that favors ex ante financial regulation in which regulators are charged with avoiding public harm. More broadly, this Article rejects the notion that regulation is the enemy of markets and therefore must be minimized. Regulation is viewed neutrally—neither inherently good nor inherently bad—as a co-existing partner in highly complex and ever evolving financial markets.
To develop the case for a top-down system of capital regulation, this Article continues as follows, Part II describes …
Protestant Ecclesiastical Law And The Ius Commune, Kenneth Pennington
Protestant Ecclesiastical Law And The Ius Commune, Kenneth Pennington
Scholarly Articles
Protestants almost never called their ecclesiastical norms ‘canons.’ When Protestant jurists or theologians wrote ‘canon law’ (Ius canonicum) in their works, it was clear to their readers that they meant Roman canon law. Surprisingly, Protestant jurists often cited Roman canon law and its jurisprudence long after Martin Luther burned books of Roman canon law at the Elster gate in Wittenberg. These jurists also continued to teach courses at the universities that treated the Ius canonicum. Consequently, an essay on Protestant canon law must confront the question: how much Roman canon law and the jurisprudence of the medieval …

Fee Shifting For Ptab Proceedings, Megan M. La Belle
Fee Shifting For Ptab Proceedings, Megan M. La Belle
Scholarly Articles
Fee shifting in patent litigation has been a hot topic in recent years. In Octane Fitness v. ICON and Highmark v. Allcare, the Supreme Court made it easier to shift fees under 35 U.S.C. § 285, which allows courts to award reasonable attorney’s fees to prevailing parties in patent cases. Moreover, several bills have been introduced in Congress since 2013 that would expand courts’ power beyond the parameters of § 285. Various aspects of these proposals have been heavily debated, including whether fee shifting should be mandatory or discretionary, how to recover fees from the “real party in interest,” and …
The Hedgehog, The Fox, And Kozolychyk: The Practical And Philosophical Foundations Of Best Practices In Legal Harmonization For Economic Development, Antonio F. Perez
The Hedgehog, The Fox, And Kozolychyk: The Practical And Philosophical Foundations Of Best Practices In Legal Harmonization For Economic Development, Antonio F. Perez
Scholarly Articles
This essay explicates Professor Boris Kozolchyk’s magnum opus, Comparative Commercial Contracts, as a vehicle for exploring the practical and philosophical foundations for effective efforts to promote international legal harmonization in private law. Its central thesis is that good practices are founded on the philosophical premises embedded in Kozolchyk’s work, which in turn are drawn from Kozolchyk’s practical experience. This experience yields a vision of practices reflecting those of the archetypal merchant, a bonus vir (a good man or person), and the conception of commercial justice as fairness and reasonableness made possible by practical guidance rooted in requirements of the bonus …

The main goal of this article is to present to the European reader the implications of the crisis of the Chinese banking system which peaked in August 2015, and triggered a period of high volatility in the US. stockmarket. As a result, trade relations between China and the US. have deteriorated, which raises the question of whether the Chinese economic system will implode and contribute to the global crisis, or whether it can be controlled by Beijing?
The article assumes two things: that subsidies are at the core of US. criticism of Chinese trade priorities; and that to understand recent …

A Place Of Their Own: Crowds In The New Market For Equity Crowdfunding, Seth C. Oranburg
A Place Of Their Own: Crowds In The New Market For Equity Crowdfunding, Seth C. Oranburg
Scholarly Articles
Is small better than large? When it comes to normative business law policy, many seem to think so. Many scholars attribute the 2007-08 financial crisis to mis-regulation of large banks. Many others attribute the subsequent economic recovery to jobs created by small businesses. While the "99%" protested big banks on Wall Street, the "Startup America" grassroots campaign for small business garnered political support for corporate-finance legislation. Within a two-year period, Congress passed the JOBS Act-which tripled private company shareholder limits, authorized federal equity crowdfunding, and created the "mini-IPO" Regulation A+ - and the Dodd-Frank Act-which seeks to end "too big …
Strategic And Tactical Totalization In The Totalitarian Epoch, Adam J. Macleod
Strategic And Tactical Totalization In The Totalitarian Epoch, Adam J. Macleod
Scholarly Articles
This article examines the totalization of private law by public authorities. It compares and contrasts the fate of private law in totalitarian regimes with the role of private law in contemporary, non-totalitarian liberal democracies. It briefly examines the Socialist jurisprudence of the former Soviet Union and its treatment of private law. It offers an explanation why private law might be inimical to the jurisprudence of the Soviet Union and totalitarian regimes more generally. It next examines the totalization of law accomplished by segregationist regimes in the mid-twentieth century, comparing and contrasting those regimes with totalitarian regimes. Then it turns to …

Encapsulation Of Natural Colorant In Rice Flour Granules, Pornpan Natthawut
Encapsulation Of Natural Colorant In Rice Flour Granules, Pornpan Natthawut
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The trend of using natural colorants replaced synthetic colorants was increasing in food and cosmetic application. However, the natural colorants had disadvantage on color instability. Usually the color of anthocyanin changes quite quickly after the materials are exposed to various environmental factors including moisture, air and light. In this work, rice granules were used to stabilize roselle, butterfly pea and curcumin extracts. The stabilized natural colorants were then subjected to stability evaluation at various temperatures (room temperature, 4oC and 40oC) for up to 1000 h, and also under light-exposed and light-proof conditions for up to 100 h. The monitoring of …
