Landscape To Local: A Multi-Scale Evaluation Of Voluntary Efforts To Reduce Fragmentation And Enhance Management Of Rangelands For Sage-Grouse, Joseph Tyler Smith Jan 2016

Landscape To Local: A Multi-Scale Evaluation Of Voluntary Efforts To Reduce Fragmentation And Enhance Management Of Rangelands For Sage-Grouse, Joseph Tyler Smith

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

For imperiled species, the hierarchical nature of habitat selection suggests the need for a hierarchical approach to conservation: address threats to persistence operating at broad scales on populations before focusing on the quality of patches or availability of particular resources used by individuals. We apply this approach to conservation and management of habitat for greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) in the eastern portion of their range where cropland conversion continues to fragment sagebrush grasslands. Using locations of active leks in portions of Montana, Wyoming, North Dakota, and South Dakota as spatial indices of populations, we found sage-grouse distribution was highly sensitive …

Extreme Hybrid Growth, Genomic Imprinting, The Large X Effect, And The Drivers Of Speciation In Mammals, Thomas David Brekke Jan 2016

Extreme Hybrid Growth, Genomic Imprinting, The Large X Effect, And The Drivers Of Speciation In Mammals, Thomas David Brekke

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Mammalian hybrids often show abnormal growth, indicating that developmental inviability may play an important role in mammalian speciation. Yet it is unclear if this recurrent phenotype reflects a common genetic basis. Here I describe patterns of hybrid inviability between two closely related species of dwarf hamsters, Phodopus campbelli and P. sungorus. Using genetic crosses, I found extreme parent-of-origin dependent growth in hybrid embryos and placentas. Abnormal growth in hybrid mammals has been empirically linked to genomic imprinting, the parent-specific silencing of a single allele that occurs in many genes involved in regulating embryonic growth. Epigenetic disruptions of genomic imprinting activate …

Mechanisms And Consiqences Of Lysosomal Membrane Permeabilization Following Exposure To Bioactive Particles, Forrest Connell Jessop Jan 2016

Mechanisms And Consiqences Of Lysosomal Membrane Permeabilization Following Exposure To Bioactive Particles, Forrest Connell Jessop

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Exposure to bioactive environmental particles and engineered nanoparticles are a significant public health concern. Inhalation of bioactive particles can result in chronic inflammation, which drives tissue remodeling and fibrosis. Furthermore, chronic inflammation can increase individual susceptibility to other diseases including cancer and autoimmune diseases. The macrophage is the critical cell in particle clearance following exposure, and is central to the inflammatory responses and tissue remodeling. Phagocytosed bioactive particles within macrophages cause cytotoxicity and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome, outcomes that are both essential to inflammation and disease development. However, mechanisms that regulate NLRP3 inflammasome activity and cytotoxicity have not fully …

The Effect Of Rest Interval Duration On The Volume Completed During A High Intensity Bench Press Exercise, Dennis J. Hernandez Jan 2016

The Effect Of Rest Interval Duration On The Volume Completed During A High Intensity Bench Press Exercise, Dennis J. Hernandez

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Between set rest intervals (RI) are one of the most important variables in resistance training; however, no known research has investigated the effects of RIs greater than 5-min during strength training (>85% of 1RM). The purpose of this research was to examine the effects of three different RIs (2, 5, and 8-minute) on training volume (kg, sets x reps x resistance) and repetition sustainability during a high-intensity bench press exercise (> 85% of 1RM). Fifteen resistance trained males (mean+sd, age = 26+5 yr, height = 161+6 cm, body mass = 79+6 kg, bench press 1RM ratio = 1.39+0.1) completed …

Seasonal Habitat Selection Of The North American Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In A Coastal Dune Forest, Cara L. Appel Jan 2016

Seasonal Habitat Selection Of The North American Porcupine (Erethizon Dorsatum) In A Coastal Dune Forest, Cara L. Appel

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Wildlife-habitat relationship studies are important for understanding the factors that determine where species occur in space and time. Habitat selection by generalist species should be studied on fine spatial and temporal scales to avoid masking important differences between seasons, localities, or orders of selection. I conducted the first study of habitat use and general ecology of North American porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) in a coastal dune environment. Specifically, I assessed changes in body mass, home range size, and habitat selection in relation to the potential for seasonal nutritional and survival bottlenecks as reported elsewhere. Although they are considered generalists, …

“European Right To Be Forgotten: Policy Ramifications”, Celine Rodriguez Jan 2016

“European Right To Be Forgotten: Policy Ramifications”, Celine Rodriguez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In 28 European countries, removing personal data from the Internet is as simple as filling out a form online by anyone claiming a ‘right to be forgotten’. Most decisions regarding data removal are left to companies who operate search engines like Google and Microsoft, with little judicial involvement beyond the appeals process. I analyze how removal of information from Internet search results may negatively affect historical accuracy, free speech and the public interest. I will argue that the European courts should have more involvement, and I propose alternative ways to implement the right to be forgotten that will be less …

A Comparison Of Intrinsic And Transplanted Chandelier Cells During Cortical Development In Mice, Michael Leary Jan 2016

A Comparison Of Intrinsic And Transplanted Chandelier Cells During Cortical Development In Mice, Michael Leary

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Recent findings show it is possible to genetically target Chandelier Cells (ChC) by using transgenic animals expressing a CRE recombinase under the control of a transient transcription factor. This targeting allows for continuous expression of a Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) to study ChCs intrinsic cellular processes. However, the expression of GFP in these mice is weak and the transient transcription factor limits the ability to achieve cell type specific expression of genes. To overcome these problems a technique of transplanting transfected ChC-progenitors into the cortex of developing mice, using single cell electroporation, was created. To compare both methods an analysis …

An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Chronic Patellar Tendinopathy Treatments, Kurtis Kepfer Jan 2016

An Analysis Of The Efficacy Of Chronic Patellar Tendinopathy Treatments, Kurtis Kepfer

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The patellar tendon is a largely avascular tendon with a low metabolic rate. Repeated strain can cause faster breakdown as opposed to healing, resulting in patellar tendinopathy. As more becomes known about the condition, it is becoming clear that new treatments need to be developed. Research has shown that cryotherapy, anti-inflammatory drugs, and corticosteroid injections, though widely used, are dated and potentially harmful. Other current treatments include physical therapy, sclerosing and platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections, shock wave therapy, and surgery. However, none of these treatments has shown significant effectiveness. Due to a lack of high quality research and intrinsic …

Interspecies Interactions Between Hemidactylus Mabouia, Hemidactylus Garnotii, And Osteopilus Septentrionalis, Connor Voirin Jan 2016

Interspecies Interactions Between Hemidactylus Mabouia, Hemidactylus Garnotii, And Osteopilus Septentrionalis, Connor Voirin

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Exotic species are a substantial threat to native species and understanding their interactions is important. The focus of this study is to analyze the competition between two non-native gecko species, Hemidactylus mabouia and Hemidactylus garnotii. These two species occupy similar niches on buildings in Florida, with H. mabouia being the more successful of the two species,, leading to higher abundances of H. mabouia. The Cuban Treefrog, Osteopilus septentrionalis, another exotic species of the Florida mainland, preys on these species an on some of the same prey of those geckos. In the presence O. septentrionalis, H. garnotii numbers overtake H. mabouia. Understanding …

Anti-Bacterial Properties In Venom Of Albanian Acrobat Ants, Crematogaster Schmidti, Guillermo G. Sawai

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Bioprospecting’s main goal is to discover natural compounds with beneficial properties. Previous studies have shown diverse, bio-active organic compounds found in the venom of different species of ants. In my research, I tested the venom of an acrobat ant from Albania, Crematogaster schmidti, for anti-bacterial properties by using the disc diffusion method. I found a decrease in bacterial colony growth where the venom was applied onto the agar plate.

Diplomatic Immunity: Ethics In Vaccine Policy, Kendyl Stewart Jan 2016

Diplomatic Immunity: Ethics In Vaccine Policy, Kendyl Stewart

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In this thesis, I first describe three strategies used around the world to encourage or enforce vaccination. I then review the vaccine standards of both the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization and present a number of common reasons used by individuals to justify vaccine refusal. I then outline a number of ethical tenets that can be used to evaluate vaccine policies and apply those principles to the policies described above. In this evaluation, I assert that ethical vaccine policies should not seek either to punish individuals for exercising their right to autonomy or to …

Brand Name Vs. Generic Medications, Reem Warrayat Jan 2016

Brand Name Vs. Generic Medications, Reem Warrayat

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

I will be looking in depth between the similarities and differences of brand name and generic medications. I will see what makes one a brand name and one a generic and how similar and different the drugs can be from each other before they are considered an entirely different drug. After that, I will talk about the FDA guidelines, and how my research shows evidence for something entirely different. Finally, I will then look at case studies, my own experience, and surveys to see which drug is preferred more among people and why they chose what they do, and if …

The Relationship Between Non-Human And Human Research And The Scientific Construction Of Race, Gender, And Sexuality, Shayna Marie De Ruysscher Jan 2016

The Relationship Between Non-Human And Human Research And The Scientific Construction Of Race, Gender, And Sexuality, Shayna Marie De Ruysscher

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

My thesis focuses on the relationship between science and non-human research studies. Specifically, I will look at the role that ‘animals’ play in the scientific construction of race, gender, and sexuality. In what ways has the scientific construction of the dichotomy between primates and human beings been used in science to create racial, gender and sexual dichotomies? In what ways are the resulting consequences of such dichotomies in medical fields a reflection of these constructions? My research attempts to show various ways in which language and interpretations established by science help to create a dichotomy between animals and humans, which …

A Statistical Analysis Of The U.S. News And World Report's Honor Roll List Of Best Hospitals Via County Mortality Rates, Brian Evans Jan 2016

A Statistical Analysis Of The U.S. News And World Report's Honor Roll List Of Best Hospitals Via County Mortality Rates, Brian Evans

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

With the widespread use of the internet, information regarding medical facilities and practices has never been easier to obtain. This convenience may often prove beneficial, but using the internet to research topics regarding one's own health creates a potential for risks. This research addresses these concerns by studying the annual Honor Roll list of hospitals, a listing published each year by the U.S. News and World Report that ranks the best medical facilities in the country. To accomplish this, we aimed to analyze the relationship between the hospitals listed on the Honor Roll and the mortality rates of the counties …

Disneyland: Embodying American Mythology And Cultural Values From 1955 To The Present, Erin Fee Jan 2016

Disneyland: Embodying American Mythology And Cultural Values From 1955 To The Present, Erin Fee

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Disneyland Park, which opened in Anaheim, California on July 17, 1955, has been a fixture of American culture for over sixty years. Each of its themed “lands” are constructed to embody the popular perceptions of an abstract idea, such as the frontier, tomorrow, and adventure. Even areas based on specific locations are primarily invested in representing places as they exist in the American imagination. Culture is dynamic, however, and public sensibilities evolve. The constant struggle to maintain societal relevancy and resonance has revised nearly every facet of Disneyland’s narrative since its opening, in ways both subtle and substantial.

Seven-Year Manatee Survey Looking At Seasonal Patterns Of Frequently Observed Individuals In The Harbor Branch Channel Using Photo-Identification Techniques, Lauren Goldsworthy Gomez Jan 2016

Seven-Year Manatee Survey Looking At Seasonal Patterns Of Frequently Observed Individuals In The Harbor Branch Channel Using Photo-Identification Techniques, Lauren Goldsworthy Gomez

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The manatee project at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute was established in 2009. Land-based observations and photo-identification techniques have been used over the past seven years, allowing observers to recognize specific resident manatees that visit this location season after season. The U.S. Geological Survey’s Biological Resources Division maintains a photo-identification database of manatees known as the Manatee Individual Photo-identification System, or MIPS. The photographs from the Manatee Project have been shared with the MIPS database and several manatees from the Manatee Project were matches, indicating some of the manatees are migrants. This project focuses on the seasonal visitation patterns of frequently …

The Corruption Of Obstetrics, Chelsea Hube Jan 2016

The Corruption Of Obstetrics, Chelsea Hube

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Within the last two centuries, birth has undergone a major transformation as doctors took over and relocated childbirth from the home to the hospital, leaving the reproductive female body and female healers devalued and disempowered. Advancements in medical science have played a fundamental role in this transformation. As birth has become more and more medicalized, women seem to have lost their agency and believe the only place to have a successful birth is in a hospital. Reproductive technologies have certainly had beneficial effects, but they have also turned the mother into an extension of obstetric machines, communicating a power hierarchy …

Matrix Applications: Microsoft Excel, Chastity Selma Jhingree Jan 2016

Matrix Applications: Microsoft Excel, Chastity Selma Jhingree

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The inherent matrix study within numerical analysis has evolved into a seemingly finite exploration of row arrangements, transpositions and basic operations of addition, subtraction and multiplication. However, with the formulaic structure of Microsoft Excel, is there not an extended possibility that complex matrix operations and functions can be easily solved using the rows and columns of excel along with their respective formulae? The purpose of this thesis, therefore, is to transfer matrix numerical information onto Microsoft Excel, and by applying appropriate excel functions (e.g. =MMULT for matrix multiplication) find the operational solution. As a corollary to the application of matrices …

The First Amendment & The Madisonian Dilemma - Freedom From Persecution For The Cause Of Conscience By The State, Claudel Louis Jan 2016

The First Amendment & The Madisonian Dilemma - Freedom From Persecution For The Cause Of Conscience By The State, Claudel Louis

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

In health care cases involving children, people are still vulnerable to religious persecution in this country, particularly in the State of Florida, because the public officials responsible for securing and enforcing the laws tend to lend the prestige of their offices to advance the private and special interests of themselves and others at the expense of minority groups. Following a literary review of the laws that provide for the free exercise of religion nationally and in the State of Florida, I apply case law to a hypothetical case, based on true facts concerning parents who are African American, Jehovah's Witness …

Using C. Elegans As A Model System To Discover Antiepileptic Drugs, Mckenzie D. Merritt Jan 2016

Using C. Elegans As A Model System To Discover Antiepileptic Drugs, Mckenzie D. Merritt

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

Novel antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are commonly tested using rats and mice as model systems. These animals, however, require a great deal of time, money, and lab space to maintain. In contrast, the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans) potentially can provide a faster, and less expensive model system for testing AEDs. C. elegans are simple to maintain and have a very short generation time, allowing high throughput assays to screen for new AEDs. For my thesis research, I used C. elegans to test FDA approved AEDs. My tests support the contention that C. elegans can be a useful model system for …

L1cam: A Potential Role In Alzheimer Pathology, Aater Qureshi

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

L1-type cell adhesion molecule (L1-CAM) is a synaptic membrane protein that is associated with L1 syndrome, which exhibits spasticity, intellectual disability and hydrocephalus Neuroglian (Nrg) is the invertebrate homologue of L1-CAM in Drosophila melanogaster. In vitro studies have shown L1-CAM is proteolytically cleaved and the intracellular domain (ICD) translocates to the nucleus. There it is involved in the upregulation of genes that are involved in DNA damage response, cell cycle progression, apoptosis and cellular differentiation. In some forms of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) proteolytic cleavage of L1-CAM are enhanced. We studied the effects of expression of NrgICD in vivo. Our results …

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

A priority of the aquaponics industry is increasing sustainable production yields on a large scale. In partnership with Morning Star Fishermen and Greener Planet Solutions, I conducted a side-by-side experimental comparison of two backyard-sized aquaponics systems with an equal biomass composed of tilapia, lettuce, and kale. One system received supplemental dissolved oxygen using Greener Planet Solutions’ PrO2-021 Oxygen Delivery System while the control system received no supplemental oxygen treatment. The systems were monitored for a period of three months. At the conclusion of the experiment, I found the biomass of all the observed plants species to be significantly higher in …

Finding Safe Harbor: Eliminating The Gap In Colorado's Human Trafficking Laws, Jessica A. Pingleton Jan 2016

Finding Safe Harbor: Eliminating The Gap In Colorado's Human Trafficking Laws, Jessica A. Pingleton

University of Colorado Law Review

In March 2014, the Colorado Court of Appeals acquitted Dallas Cardenas of all human trafficking charges. The court determined that under the 2014 version of Colorado's human trafficking statute, a defendant who sold the sexual services of a minor, as opposed to selling a minor for sex, did not commit the crime of human trafficking. Following the Cardenas decision, the state legislature passed House Bill 1273, which broadened the language of the statute and eliminated all possible affirmative defenses, including minor consent. Under the new law, a defendant can no longer argue that a minor consented to commercial sex. However, …
