Kimmo Hakola's Diamond Street And Loco: A Performance Guide, Erin Elizabeth Vander Wyst May 2016

Kimmo Hakola's Diamond Street And Loco: A Performance Guide, Erin Elizabeth Vander Wyst

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Kimmo Hakola (b.1958) has emerged in the past two decades as one of Finland’s leading contemporary composers. His numerous clarinet and bass clarinet works include a clarinet concerto, five chamber works with various instrumentations, a work for solo clarinet, a work for solo bass clarinet, and a work for solo clarinet and pedal bass drum (the clarinetist performs both the clarinet and bass drum parts). While this relatively large output featuring the clarinet family may be a result of Hakola’s personal interests, it may also be the result of a friendship with virtuoso clarinetist Kari Kriikku (b. 1960). This document …

The Utility Of Visually Nontraditional Scores In The Collegiate Voice Studio, Jennifer Voigt

Open Access Dissertations

The incorporation of learning science into vocal pedagogy has been a slow process with advancements in biology and physics dominating change in the field. However, recent research into learning styles and the processing of motor skills has revealed areas that could be enhanced within standard vocal teaching procedures. This study addresses the possibility of filling these gaps with the inclusion of visually nontraditional scores as a teaching tool. Specifically, this paper examines the utility of these scores within the collegiate voice studio. Visually nontraditional scores can contribute to a variety of learning needs and facilitate the acquisition of new technical …

The Life And Piano Works Of Mutsuo Shishido – A Synthesis Of Cultures And Sounds, Akina Yura Apr 2016

The Life And Piano Works Of Mutsuo Shishido – A Synthesis Of Cultures And Sounds, Akina Yura

Open Access Dissertations

Despite the plethora of substantial Japanese classical composers, information about their lives and compositions are relatively unknown outside their homeland. Considering the formidable quality of their compositions, these composers deserve a place within the mainstream of classical music scene. Composer Mutsuo Shishido (1929-2007) is one of the most important of these composers, as he left many appealing works and has been garnering increasing attention among classical musicians. A pupil of André Jolivet and Olivier Messiaen, and a contemporary of Toru Takemitsu, Shishido is a unique and captivating composer with the style of synthesizing Western classical contemporary music with traditional Japanese …

Spirituality And Scottish Identity In Selected Works Of James Macmillan, Bethany Lynn Alvey Apr 2016

Spirituality And Scottish Identity In Selected Works Of James Macmillan, Bethany Lynn Alvey

Open Access Dissertations

Sir James MacMillan's choral works have been studied through the lens of, and labelled by, three extra-musical themes: Catholicism, Scottish identity, and social consciousness. This study investigates the veracity of these labels from the perspective of the composer, and their application to choral music. Interviews with the composer were conducted in Glasgow, Scotland. Two choral works were studied, the large choral-orchestral work, St John Passion, and the short a cappella piece, "The Gallant Weaver." Texts and translations, as well as full transcripts of the interviews are included in the appendix.

Development Of A Rubric For Collegiate Jazz Improvisation Performance Assessment, Kendall Ryan Moore Apr 2016

Development Of A Rubric For Collegiate Jazz Improvisation Performance Assessment, Kendall Ryan Moore

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to develop a jazz improvisation rubric for the evaluation of collegiate jazz improvisation. To create this measure, research objectives were devised to investigate the aurally- observed performer-controlled components of improvisation, which aurally-observed components should be evaluated in an improvisatory performance, and whether a comprehensive measure could be developed to evaluate such a performance. Published methods on general music performance, jazz improvisation performance methods, jazz pedagogy texts, and statements from jazz educators and performers were content analyzed and cross referenced to determine overarching similarities and create criteria for evaluation. After conducting research, it was determined …

Program Notes And Translations, Kelly Frailly Apr 2016

Program Notes And Translations, Kelly Frailly

Honors Projects

This project consists of program notes about sixteen pieces of music that I publically performed on April 10th, 2016. These notes are comprised of research done about each piece on the program, its composer, the history of the era in which the song or aria was composed, and an analysis of the text. The pieces ranged from Baroque operatic arias all the way to twenty-first century musical theater works. I have also included translations of all of the foreign language pieces.

Vibrato Rate In Female Opera Singers And Female Sertanejo Singers, Melissa Mccann Apr 2016

Vibrato Rate In Female Opera Singers And Female Sertanejo Singers, Melissa Mccann

Showcase of Graduate Student Scholarship and Creative Activities

The aim of this study was to compare female vibrato rates in two styles of singing, western classical and sertanejo. This study was conducted in order to determine if different technical approaches yield a different mean vibrato rate in female singers. Examples were taken from well-known, operatic sopranos and popular female sertanejo singers. The program Vocevista was used to gain quantitative data on the singers’ vibrato rates and vibrato extent. A purpose of this study is to determine if the findings of similar mean vibrato rate for tenors singing in operatic and sertanejo genres, also hold true for female vocalists …

Towards A Framework For Creativity In Popular Music Degrees, Joe Bennett Apr 2016

Towards A Framework For Creativity In Popular Music Degrees, Joe Bennett

Faculty Works

This chapter discusses popular music curricula by talking about classical conservatoires in order to demonstrate that the latter were called into existence with an employability agenda – to provide people who could fulfil society's musical needs. Popular music's aural product manifests itself in one of two ways – as a sound recording, or as a performance. Music industry administrative systems reward the songwriter separately from the performer, and copyright protects the song as a composition differently from the sound recording of the song, privileging melody above all other creative content. This pre-digital-age definition of the songwriting act is problematic for …

Playing Bebop: Culture And Bebop’S Reciprocal Influence, Audra M. Deboy Apr 2016

Playing Bebop: Culture And Bebop’S Reciprocal Influence, Audra M. Deboy

Student Publications

Following the sweet, pleasant Swing era style music of the 1930’s, Bebop emerged within the United States as an aggressive, percussive, musician-focused style in the 1940’s. However, Bebop’s creation was not spontaneous. Its composers, John Birks Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk, wrote for the sake of the music itself as a form of self-expression, not as entertainment for an audience. Bebop’s dissonant sound expressed political and cultural frustrations, stemming from World War II and similarly shown in the early Civil Rights Movement. I will argue that not only did Bebop develop out of such conflicts, but in a reciprocal …

Comparing Apples To Oranges: An Exploration Of The Use Of Libguides In Arl Libraries, Rosalinda H. Linares, Anna Marie Johnson

Works by Oberlin College Libraries Staff

The University of Louisville (UofL) Libraries, like thousands of libraries all over the world, use LibGuides content management software from Springshare to create and maintain several hundred subject guide webpages. Although the librarians spend countless hours every year on their guides, a study of guide usage has never been undertaken. As the authors began to look at the usage statistics for their institution, they wondered if examining only statistics from UofL Libraries would be looking at them in a vacuum. The UofL Libraries is a mid-size to large library system with six separate libraries and is a member of the …

Tarian Perdamaian: Enacting Alternative Hindu/Christian Identity Discourses Through "Secular" Balinese Performing Arts, Dustin D. Wiebe

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

This article examines the nature of interreligious relations between Protestants of the Bali Church and Hindus as enacted through dramatic forms of Balinese music and dance. Particular attention is paid to the influence of mass tourism as a contributing factor in this process. Since the early twentieth century these arts have formed a central component of a pan-Balinese identity discourse known as" kebalian." The first Balinese converted to Christianity during the 1930s and were subsequently excommunicated from their ancestral villages for refusing to participate in local customary practices (including the ritualistic use of gamelan music). For this reason, Balinese …

Psalms, Islam, And Music: Dialogues And Divergence About David In Christian-Muslim Encounters Of The Seventeenth Century, David R. M. Irving Mar 2016

Psalms, Islam, And Music: Dialogues And Divergence About David In Christian-Muslim Encounters Of The Seventeenth Century, David R. M. Irving

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

David (Daud) is revered in the Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam variously as a king, prophet, and musician, providing the inspiration for what can be called the “Davidic tradition,” expressed in text, sound, ideology, and image. The scriptures associated with David are central to this tradition: within Judaism and Christianity they are the Psalms, human praises or entreaties to God; within Islam, the Zabūr is revered as a divine prophecy revealed to the prophet Daud, according to the Qurʾān. David’s musicianship and the identity of his instruments are understood differently in Jewish-Christian and Islamic traditions, and are interpreted …
