Selecting Optimal Combinations Of Transcription Factors To Promote Axon Regeneration: Why Mechanisms Matter, Ishwariya Venkatesh, Murray G. Blackmore
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Recovery from injuries to the central nervous system, including spinal cord injury, is constrained in part by the intrinsically low ability of many CNS neurons to mount an effective regenerative growth response. To improve outcomes, it is essential to understand and ultimately reverse these neuron-intrinsic constraints. Genetic manipulation of key transcription factors (TFs), which act to orchestrate production of multiple regeneration-associated genes, has emerged as a promising strategy. It is likely that no single TF will be sufficient to fully restore neuron-intrinsic growth potential, and that multiple, functionally interacting factors will be needed. An extensive literature, mostly from non-neural cell …

Myo-inositol phosphates (phytates) are important biological molecules produced largely by plants to store phosphorus. Phytate is very abundant in many different soils making up a large portion of all soil phosphorus. This review assesses current phytase science from the perspective of its substrate, phytate, by examining the intricate relationship between the phytate-hydrolyzing enzymes and phytate as their substrate. Specifically, we examine available data on phytate’s structural features, distribution in nature and functional roles. The role of phytases and their localization in soil and plant tissues are evaluated. We provide a summary of the current biotechnological advances in using industrial …
Tender Procedure For Traditionally Procured Building Contracts In Ireland, Tony Cunningham
Tender Procedure For Traditionally Procured Building Contracts In Ireland, Tony Cunningham
Other Resources
The process of tendering for construction contracts is an expensive process, particularly where contracts are large and/or complex or involve partial, or total, contractor design. The underlying philosophy guiding best practice in tendering procedure is that of ensuring fair play among the tendering contractors. Tenders for building contracts may be obtained using a range of approaches. This study examines best practice in tendering procedure for building contracts in the private and public sectors in Ireland and focuses in particular on the procedures to be carried out under open and selective/restricted tendering approaches.
The study identifies where open tendering and selective …

Hydrological modeling is a powerful technique for hydrologic system investigation for research hydrologists, and practicing water resources planners and engineers involved in the planning and development of an integrated approach for the management of water resources. Hydrological models are based on our understanding of the physics of the hydrological processes which control catchment response and use physically based equations to describe these processes. Some typical examples of field applications of hydrologic modeling includes the study of the effect of climate and land use changes, the prediction of the behavior of ungauged catchments, spatial variability in catchment inputs and outputs, movement …

Hydrological modeling is evolving following advances in computational capabilities and the spread of digital data. Keeping up with technological development is becoming a challenge and might results in increased complexity and higher uncertainties. Many tools are today available to detailed simulate particular hydrological processes but the water system at the catchment scale requires the integration of several domains. For all this reasons flexibility and ease of integration are important requirements for the hydrological models of tomorrow. To this end, we considered the spatially distributed hydrological model WetSpa (Water and energy transfer between Soil plant and atmosphere) and we modified its …

In 2000, the European Union launched the Water Framework Directive (WFD) (EU, 2000), which calls to achieve a good ecological status of all water bodies by 2015 through integrated river basin management. Integrated models are therefore necessary to serve as tools for river basin management in the scope of the WFD. Despite large investments made for the management of the Brussels’ sewer systems, the Zenne river still receives high loads of pollutants, especially considering the small size of this receiving water body. An interuniversity, multidisciplinary research project ‘Good Ecological Status of the river Zenne (GESZ)’ was therefore launched to evaluate …

Models play an important role in river basin management and different softwares have been developed to quantify the impact of land management practices on river basins, to solve water allocation problem, to predict extreme events (drought and flooding) and many other applications. Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) is one of these software used in water management practice. The software is used worldwide and there are more than 1000 peer reviewed articles published. Reviews of these papers show that there is much duplication of SWAT applications for the same case study. One of the reasons is the lack of information, …

The African great lakes are of utmost importance for the local economy (fishing), as well as being essential to the survival of the local people. During the last decades, these lakes experienced fast changes in ecosystem structure and functioning and their future evolution is a major concern. In this study, for the first time a set of one-dimensional lake models are evaluated for Lake Kivu (2.28 °S; 28.98 °E), East-Africa. The unique limnology of this meromictic Lake, with the importance of salinity and subsurface springs in a tropical high-altitude climate, presents a worthy challenge to the seven models involved in …

The European Union Water Framework Directive (EU-WFD) called its member countries to achieve a good ecological status for all inland and coastal water bodies by 2015 (EU, 2000). However, the River Zenne (Belgium) is far from this objective. Therefore, an interuniversity and multidisciplinary project “Towards a Good Ecological Status in the River Zenne (GESZ)” was launched to evaluate the effects of wastewater management plans on the river. In the framework of this project, different models have been developed and integrated using the Open Modelling Interface (OpenMI) (Gregersen et al., 2007). The hydrologic, physically-based, semi-distributed Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) …

Access to clean and safe water is a human right and to grant it under a sustainable development point of view is paramount for well being of the future generations. Therefore, it is important to understand the interaction between the mate- rial flows to coastal waters that are constrained by catchment boundaries and the human activi- ties therein, and those materials that are tied to trade and other trans-boundary processes (e.g. re- sidence time, transport and fate of physical, chemi- cal and microbiological water-quality determinants) and their global implications on preserving the qua- lity of the natural environment.

Detailed hydrodynamic models that solve the full de Saint-Venant equations play a crucial role in support of river engineering, management and integrated catchment modelling. They explain the current state of a river system, and are useful for various types of scenario investigations. However, detailed physically-based models show two major disadvantages. Due to the long calculation times, simulations have to be limited both in time and space. Applications involving numerous simulations, such as global optimization problems at catchment level, real time control applications and uncertainty analyses, cannot be performed. Secondly, the coupling of models created in different software environments can be …

Flood forecasting systems predict discharges and water levels at various locations along the river. These predictions are based on rainfall observations and forecasts, and hydrological and hydraulic simulation models. These models contain several types of uncertainties. Therefore before using these models as a decision-making tool, they have to be evaluated in order to assess uncertainties and enhance the simulation accuracy and to reduce the possibility of improper decision making resulting in undesirable consequences. One of the most important model uncertainty sources is the regulation of the hydraulic structures in the hydrodynamic model. These regulations are calculated, making use of fixed …

The Rhyming Irons Of Abdur-Rahman Slade Hopkinson, Paul Thifault
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
Despite being a highly respected member of the Brathwaite-Walcott generation, Abdur-Rahman Slade Hopkinson has received only passing attention from scholars of West Indian literature. In an attempt to foster greater appreciation for a Caribbean artist recently dubbed “the forgotten poet” in his native Guyana, this article uncovers an organizing principle running through Snowscape with Signature (1993), a substantial posthumous selection of Hopkinson's poems that includes both secular and religious verses. The defining characteristic of Hopkinson’s poetry, I argue, involves his careful imbrication of competing notions of poetry as, on the one hand, a space for transcendent aesthetics and, on the …

Maps Of Intimate And Institutional Change In Merle Collins’S Angel And Oonya Kempadoo’S Tide Running, Clare M. Sigrist
Anthurium: A Caribbean Studies Journal
This article reads Merle Collins’s Angel and Oonya Kempadoo’s Tide Running for their narration of social transformations within their characters lived experience. Comparing these two different novels allows this paper to think change both within and beyond the dramatic moments of revolutionary change and against theories of change that primarily limit themselves to large structural forces, such as sex tourism and the U.S. media, and their effects. I propose Angel acts as a map of and toward social transformation, while Tide Running acts as an anti-map, a source of disorientation that prompts better wayfinding. Through the family structure Angel critiques …

Effects Of Transportation Hazards On High Barrier Flexible Packaging Films, Kyle Dunno
Journal of Applied Packaging Research
Two flexible food packaging barrier material film structures were employed for this research study to evaluate the effects of over-the-road truck transport. The films containing different barrier materials, ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) or aluminum oxide (AlOx), were selected based on their abundant use within the flexible food packaging arena. Pouches were formed and filled with tomato paste before being thermally processed then palletized for shipment. Pouches were shipped over-the-road via truck transport a distance of 2,500 miles. After transport, the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) of the pouches located on the bottom and top layers of the palletized loads were obtained and …

Rit1 Gtpase Regulates Sox2 Transcriptional Activity And Hippocampal Neurogenesis, Sajad Mir, Weikang Cai, Douglas A. Andres
Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications
Adult neurogenesis, the process of generating mature neurons from neuronal progenitor cells, makes critical contributions to neural circuitry and brain function in both healthy and disease states. Neurogenesis is a highly regulated process in which diverse environmental and physiological stimuli are relayed to resident neural stem cell populations to control the transcription of genes involved in self-renewal and differentiation. Understanding the molecular mechanisms governing neurogenesis is necessary for the development of translational strategies to harness this process for neuronal repair. Here we report that the Ras-related GTPase RIT1 serves to control the sequential proliferation and differentiation of adult hippocampal neural …

3-D Microwell Array System For Culturing Virus Infected Tumor Cells, Umut A. Gurkan
Faculty Scholarship
Cancer cells have been increasingly grown in pharmaceutical research to understand tumorigenesis and develop new therapeutic drugs. Currently, cells are typically grown using two-dimensional (2-D) cell culture approaches, where the native tumor microenvironment is difficult to recapitulate. Thus, one of the main obstacles in oncology is the lack of proper infection models that recount main features present in tumors. In recent years, microtechnology-based platforms have been employed to generate three-dimensional (3-D) models that better mimic the native microenvironment in cell culture. Here, we present an innovative approach to culture Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) infected human B cells in 3-D using …

How To Select Change Agents In Organizations? A Comparison Of The Classical And Network Approaches, Anita Zbieg, Dominik Batorski, Błażej Żak
European Management Studies
The dynamic business environment forces companies to change and adapt constantly. The process can be organized with help of change agents. We develop a simple network approach to spreading information and delivering feedback in organizations. We suggest selecting employees with a role of change agents, focusing on the coverage they can obtain in the network – minimize the number of involved agents and maximize the size of their overall communication area. To explore and pre-verify the proposed approach, we compared and examined several network and classical methods of selection. Data includes networks of collaboration from three medium-sized companies. Agents selected …

Dysphagia, meaning difficulty in swallowing, is a symptom of disease that occurs in young children and elderly people. It occurs particularly due to two reasons, weak neural network and/or deformities in oral section/s. The Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital’s Intensive Feeding Program takes care of children suffering from Dysphagia. In order to make the swallowing process easier and in some cases safer, thickener is added to the liquids. Depending on the requirement of thickness, the amount of thickener is varied. Although the directions to prepare the mixtures are given by the thickener product company, the required thickness is not achieved when …

Shareholders of a company must increasingly share power with other social actors that control access to critical resources. These social actors are stakeholders because they have stakes in firms’ operations, either through being affected by them or through being able to affect them. Stakeholders are embedded in networks of relationships in which resources are shared, combined, exploited or restricted, and informal governance modes emerge. Strategic maneuvering in stakeholder networks is critical for assuring a firm’s access to valuable resources and resulting performance. Managers deciding on the strategic course of a firm embedded in a stakeholder network face multi-dimensional problems with …

Landfill Elevated Internal Temperature Detection And Landfill Fire Index Assessment For Fire Monitoring, Aurora Musilli
Theses and Dissertations
Landfill fires are becoming a real threat to both people and environment due to lack of predictions and control methods. Processing of the infrared band from level-1 satellite images was employed and decades worth of archived data from USGS Earth Explorer databases were analyzed to obtain surface temperature values of Atlantic Waste Landfill, Virginia and Bridgeton Landfill, Missouri. Multitemporal thermal maps and frequency of maxima analysis maps of these two landfills showed the hotspots spreading through the waste site. A Landfill Fire Index (LFI) was created by investigating eight factors that give information about the hazardousness of the landfill conditions …
