The Photography and Media Literacy Project (PMLP) was an after-school program designed to teach fourth and fifth grade children about the science and art of photography in a Title I school in rural southeast Georgia. Through the completion of a problem-based applied project, we endeavored to further enhance and develop students’ media literacy, critical thinking, and metacognitive skills. The project involved having students consider some aspect of their environment (i.e., a problem from the natural, physical, school or social environment) and develop a media presentation about the topic (e.g., a movie), which included images that they took (with iPods that …

Possibilities And Challenges Of Teaching Integrated Math And Social Studies For Social Justice: Two Teacher Educators' Collaborative Self-Study, Paula P. Guerra, Sohyun An
Georgia Educational Researcher
In this paper, we—one mathematics teacher educator and one social studies teacher educator—describe a project where we collaborated to model teaching integrated mathematics and social studies for social justice in our methods courses. We encountered varied challenges in our efforts to prepare teacher candidates for social-justice-oriented lessons. These challenges included teacher candidates’ perception of authority/credibility of their professors who were foreign females from the “Third World”, teacher candidates’ deficit views on minoritized students, and the limited time and resources for teacher collaboration in teacher education. Despite these challenges, we believe this kind of project is necessary to move forward in …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Many countries have developed comprehensive developmental motor assessment scale for preschool children (DMASPC). At present, there is no comprehensive gross motor and fine motor assessment scales for preschool children in Taiwan. The purpose of this study is to develop a DMASPC specifically for Taiwanese preschool children. This study is a cross-sectional study. One hundred and seventy-seven children with typical development (91 boys and 86 girls) were enrolled and received the DMASPC test. Fifty-four of the recruited children then received a second DMASPC test within the first week after recruitment, while the other 24 children were randomly selected and received clinical …

Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Children with unilateral spastic cerebral palsy (CP) often use their sound limb to perform daily activities, which results in the learned non-use of the affected limb. Recently, many clinical researches have demonstrated the effectiveness of modified constraint-induced movement therapy (mCIMT). With the development of technology, virtual reality (VR) has gradually become one of auxiliary tools in novel rehabilitation therapy. However, mCIMT often causes frustrations in using the affected upper limb. This study uses VR as auxiliary rehabilitation equipment to form a new treatment approach-virtual reality-based constraint-induced movement therapy (VRCIT)-to investigate the effects VRCIT has on the function of the upper …

Introduction: Neuromuscular electrical stimulation is one of the non-invasive treatments for improving spasticity of upper extremity (UE) and motor function in children with cerebral palsy (CP). However, some children felt uncomfortable in receiving the neuromuscular electrical stimulation. The mesh-glove electrical stimulation (MGES) is one kind of somatosensory electrical stimulation. Recently, there were few researches indicating that MGES causes positive effectiveness for the spasticity control of UE in children with CP. This study aims to investigate the treatment effects of MGES on UE function and daily function in children with CP. Methods: This controlled trial is based on a pre- and …

Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
This study seeks to understand higher education leadership overall by exploring how mid-level leadership is enacted by career services directors. Given that higher education institutions are facing a wide range of challenges that require an equally wide range of skills to address them, colleges and universities may need to become more inclusive regarding who contributes to institutional leadership. Mid-level leadership is defined in this study as a process of social interaction that originates with a middle manager and that cuts across functional areas and/or hierarchical levels to impact institutional goals. Three research questions frame the study: 1) How do career …
Micro-Meso-Macro Comparative Law: An Essay On The Methodology Of Comparative Law, Alessandro Romano
Micro-Meso-Macro Comparative Law: An Essay On The Methodology Of Comparative Law, Alessandro Romano
Chicago-Kent Journal of International and Comparative Law
There are strong analogies between the quest for a methodology of comparative law and the broader debate on the epistemology of social and natural sciences. In this vein, after having explored the dispute between holists and reductionists, I argue that the dichotomy between micro and macro comparative law ought to be abandoned. Building on the insights of social theory, I introduce a specific framework to bridge the two levels of enquiry through a meso analysis. This framework is applied to investigate the robustness of the findings of the legal origin theory.

Cross-feeding, a relationship wherein one organism consumes metabolites excreted by another, is a ubiquitous feature of natural and clinically-relevant microbial communities and could be a key factor promoting diversity in extreme and/or nutrient-poor environments. However, it remains unclear how readily cross-feeding interactions form, and therefore our ability to predict their emergence is limited. In this paper we developed a mathematical model parameterized using data from the biochemistry and ecology of an E. coli cross-feeding laboratory system. The model accurately captures short-term dynamics of the two competitors that have been observed empirically and we use it to systematically explore the stability …

On September 14, 2015 the Advanced LIGO detectors observed their first gravitational wave (GW) transient GW150914. This was followed by a second GW event observed on December 26, 2015. Both events were inferred to have arisen from the merger of black holes in binary systems. Such a system may emit neutrinos if there are magnetic fields and disk debris remaining from the formation of the two black holes. With the surface detector array of the Pierre Auger Observatory we can search for neutrinos with energy Eν above 100 PeV from pointlike sources across the sky with equatorial declination from about …

The Moderating Role Of Perceived Organizational Support And Perceived Supervisor Support On The Relationship Between Teamwork Behaviors And Affective Commitment, Carlie Ann Stephens
Master's Theses
Researchers have identified employee affective commitment as a key indicator of variables that are of great interest to organizations (Mowday, Porter, & Steers, 1982). Teamwork behaviors have been identified as predictors of affective commitment (Meyer, Stanley, Herscovitch, & Topolnytsky, 2002). However, very few studies have examined the moderating effect organizational and supervisor support may have on these relationships. The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of perceived organizational support and perceived supervisor support on the relationship between teamwork behaviors and affective commitment. Results of a survey administered to 3,926 employees in a medical device company revealed …

A simple and flexible optical system for generating electromagnetic or vector partially coherent sources or beams is presented. The alternative design controls field amplitude (beam shape), coherence, and polarization using only spatial light modulators. This improvement makes the apparatus simpler to construct and significantly increases the flexibility of vector partially coherent source generators by allowing many different types of sources to be produced without changing the physical setup. The system’s layout and theoretical foundations are thoroughly discussed. The utility and flexibility of the proposed system are demonstrated by producing a vector Schell-model and non-Schell-model source. The experimental results are compared …

The very close structural similarities between cysteine and homocysteine present a great challenge to achieve their selective detection using regular fluorescent probes, limiting the biological and pathological studies of these two amino thiols. A coumarin-based fluorescent probe was designed featuring pH-promoted distinct turn-on followed by ratiometric fluorescence responses for Cys and turn-on fluorescence response for Hcy through two different reaction paths. These specific responses demonstrate the activity differences between Cys and Hcy qualitatively for the first time. The probe could also be used for Cys and Hcy imaging in living cells.
