An Oasis In The Laboratory Graduate Teaching Assistant (Lgta) Garden: Developing Pedagogical Skills For Undergraduate Scientific Laboratories, Barry Ryan
Irish Journal of Academic Practice
Library Graduate Teaching Assistants (LGTAs) are crucial to the smooth running of undergraduate teaching laboratories; however, they are oftentimes exiled to superficial duties such as enforcing health and safety and procedural instruction. The aim of this intrinsic case study, carried out in an Irish higher education institution, was to characterise the support required by LGTAs to develop the key pedagogical skills that would assist then in effectively demonstrating undergraduate science teaching labs. Thematic analysis of the skills gap analysis undertaken indicated an overall shortcoming in LGTA confidence in their ability to effectively demonstrate. The under-supported pedagogical sills areas were mapped …
Photoemission Electron Microscopy For Analysis Of Dielectric Structures And The Goos-Hänchen Shift, Theodore Axel Stenmark
Photoemission Electron Microscopy For Analysis Of Dielectric Structures And The Goos-Hänchen Shift, Theodore Axel Stenmark
Dissertations and Theses
Photoemission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) is a versatile tool that relies on the photoelectric effect to produce high-resolution electron images. Ultrafast pulse lasers allow for multi-photon PEEM where multiple visible or IR photons excite a single electron in a nonlinear process. The photoelectron yield in both cases is related to the near-field region of electromagnetic fields at the surface of the sample. We use this ability here to analyze wave propagation in a linear dielectric waveguide with wavelengths of 410 nm and 780 nm. The propagation constant of the waveguide can be extracted from interference patterns created by light propagating in …
Stranding Mortality Patterns In California Sea Lions And Steller Sea Lions In Oregon And Southern Washington, 2006 To 2014, Kessina Lee
Dissertations and Theses
As changing ocean conditions lead to declining fish stocks and movement of forage fish, sea lions on the Oregon coast are subject to the pressures of declining prey availability and increasing conflicts with commercial and recreational fisheries. An analysis of strandings of California sea lions, Zalophus californianus, and Steller sea lions, Eumetopias jubatus, from 2006 to 2014, included cause of death, changing ocean conditions, and anthropogenic activity. Causes of death included disease, injury, and human interaction, such as gunshot wounds, fisheries net entanglements and boat strikes.
Oregon and Washington strandings of California sea lions are primarily adult and …

Nesting Ecology Of The Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet (Camptostoma Imberbe) In The Lower Rio Grande Valley Of Texas, Usa, Scott M. Werner, Sallie J. Hejl, Timothy Brush
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
During 2002–2003, we studied the breeding ecology of the Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet (Camptostoma imberbe), a poorly known and rare permanent resident in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas, United States of America. We found 28 nests in clusters of Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides) or ball moss (T. recurvata), 93% of which were in cedar elm (Ulmus crassifolia) trees. Nest-building, incubation, and nestling periods averaged 7.0, 14.0, and 18.5 days, respectively. Of the 28 nests, 43% were successful, while 38% of the failed nests showed obvious signs of depredation. Nests were located in …

It was a very chaotic day, says Kathryn Sikes. Indeed, mutants spread everywhere, according to Brian Stadler. Bacterial wars raged all over the place, adds Dan MacMartin. Everybody was stealing, reported Christian Sykes. There were no limits to it, witnessed by Samuel Grundman. Only the fittest survived and got out of the prison, noted by Joseph Krenicky. The group was set free by Steven Piantadosi. We almost got lost in cyclic paths, said Heather Allmond. At least, our weight was a perfect number, smiles Michael Shiver, because we were not oversized thanks to Martha Shott. Finally, a picture was taken …

Insects: A Protein Revolution For The Western Human Diet, Anna Rettore
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
There are historical traces of the use of insects as food in the world, from prehistory to the present traditional use in the Third Wold and the novel use in Developed countries. Now the current regulations are trying to arrange a framework for their reintroduction because their nutritional and nutritive value makes them a considerable food for human consumption, as a source of important nutrients such as high quality protein, unsaturated fat, fibres and minearals
Influence Of Nanosilver Surface Charge On Cytotoxic Efficacy Against Cancer Cells, Elliot Frey
Influence Of Nanosilver Surface Charge On Cytotoxic Efficacy Against Cancer Cells, Elliot Frey
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Silver and silver-based products are known to cause cytotoxic effects to both microbes and eukaryotic cells. Because of this property, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are being studied for their potential in targeted tumor treatments. Previous studies with microbes suggest that AgNPs with cationic capping agents possess enhanced cytotoxicity by virtue of Coulombic attraction between the nanoparticle and the negatively-charged cell wall. Since animal cells possess similar negatively-charged plasma membranes, this research hypothesized that human cells would be more susceptible to positively-charged AgNPs than to negatively-charged AgNPs. To investigate this hypothesis, cancerous cervical cells (HeLa) and healthy fibroblast cells (3T3) were subjected …
The Effect Of Hormones And Hormonal Contraceptives On The Antibiotic Resistance Of Escherichia Coli, Chase Bowen, Rianna Flores
The Effect Of Hormones And Hormonal Contraceptives On The Antibiotic Resistance Of Escherichia Coli, Chase Bowen, Rianna Flores
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Main Conclusions (Experiment 1-Hypothesis: Induction of efflux pumps by hormone) • The growth rates of wild-type and K12 E. coli strains are significantly inhibited by the presence of ciprofloxacin. The addition of 100ug/ml hormone slightly reduced the growth in the presence of antibiotic which suggests that hormone does not induce or activate efflux pumps. • The 0.0015ug/ml ciprofloxacin concentration used in this experiment was too low for CFT073, a uropathogenic strain, but 0.003ug/ml did cause some growth inhibition. Growth with and without hormone was essentially the same suggesting that the higher efflux activity of CFT073 could rid the cells of …

Over the course of the past year, we experimented with bacteriophage (phage) isolation from both fresh and marine water. We also tested two different chemical flocculation techniques, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and iron chloride. Furthermore, we tested different vesicles in which chemical flocculation occurs, such as separation funnels, centrifuge tubes, and Erlenmeyer flasks. We analyzed the effectiveness of flocculation via florescent microscopy. Each flocculated sample was visually compared to the original unconcentrated sample by staining the DNA with SYBR-Green. A successful concentrated viral sample yielded a >10 fold increase in overall fluorescence. We found that both iron chloride and PEG were …

The objective of this project was to design and build an autonomous agricultural robot platform that is ready to be adapted for strawberry yield predication. The robot was required to have an all-electric drivetrain as a requirement for the project. A key requirement for this robot is to have the flexibility to be used with different crops and with different applications. It is also designed to be able to change width for use in fields with varying row spacing. The end product of these design requirements is a robot platform that has the capability of supporting a payload in excess …

Quantifying Reproductive Output Of Marine Benthic Species Kelletia Kelletii Surrounding The 2016 El Nino Event, Justin Palmer
Baker/Koob Endowments Awarded Projects
Nearly all of the marine fish and shellfish living along coastlines release microscopic larvae into the open ocean. The larvae then disperse for weeks to months before settling back into coral reefs and kelp forests. The larvae are too small and they travel too far to be tracked directly. Yet, knowing where these larvae settle is important for conservation and management. By quantifying the origins of a reef’s population, one can determine the extent to which that reef is dependent on other fish and shellfish populations for the replenishment of the next generation. Understanding these patterns of “connectivity” and “dependency” …

I made progress on satisfying the objectives I set out to accomplish for my thesis project. Since spring of 2016, I designed and built predatory exclusion cages, deployed cages at the North T-Pier, and trapped crabs and maintained them at the Cal Poly pier. Additionally, I led over 30 scientific dives and collected sea otter foraging data weekly. I still need to run the foraging data through the Sea Otter Foraging Analysis (SOFA) program develop by Dr. Tim Tinker. However, based on my observations, clams comprise a majority of the sea otter diet in Morro Bay, but crabs still seem …

Strategic Interactions In A One-Sector Growth Model, Eric Fesselmeyer, Leonard J. Mirman, Marc Santugini
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
We study the effect of dynamic and investment externalities in a one-sector growth model. In our model, two agents interact strategically in the utilization of capital for consumption, savings, and investment in technical progress. We consider two types of investment choices: complements and substitutes. For each case, we derive the equilibrium and provide the corresponding stationary distribution. We then compare the equilibrium with the social planner's solution.

Analysis Of A Parallel Machine Scheduling Problem With Sequence Dependent Setup Times And Job Availability Intervals, Ridvan Gedik, Chase Rainwater, Heather Nachtmann, Edward A. Pohl
Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
In this study, we propose constraint programming (CP) model and logic-based Benders algorithms in order to make the best decisions for scheduling non-identical jobs with availability intervals and sequence dependent setup times on unrelated parallel machines in a fixed planning horizon. In this problem, each job has a profit, cost and must be assigned to at most one machine in such a way that total profit is maximized. In addition, the total cost has to be less than or equal to a budget level. Computational tests are performed on a real-life case study prepared in collaboration with the U.S. Army …

Development And Implementation Of Problem-Based Chemistry Experiments For Engineering Students In A Multi-Disciplinary Course, Tiffany Hesser, Stephanie R. Bunyea
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper will describe the implementation and continuing development of five problem based laboratory experiments in a general chemistry course designed specifically for multiple disciplines of engineering students at the University of New Haven. The Problem Based Laboratory Experiments (PBLE) were developed to provide students with the opportunity to perform and develop experimental procedures working in interdisciplinary teams, while achieving a greater understanding of the role of chemistry in engineering fields. In each PBLE, students first complete a traditional chemistry experiment to gain an understanding of the chemical concepts and to become familiar with executing a written procedure with a …

Modeling Observed Animal Performance Using The Weibull Distribution, Travis J. Hagey, Jonathan B. Puthoff, Kristen E. Crandell, Kellar Autumn, Luke J. Harmon
Biology
To understand how organisms adapt, researchers must link performance and microhabitat. However, measuring performance, especially maximum performance, can sometimes be difficult. Here, we describe an improvement over previous techniques that only consider the largest observed values as maxima. Instead, we model expected performance observations via the Weibull distribution, a statistical approach that reduces the impact of rare observations. After calculating group-level weighted averages and variances by treating individuals separately to reduce pseudoreplication, our approach resulted in high statistical power despite small sample sizes. We fitted lizard adhesive performance and bite force data to the Weibull distribution and found that it …

Filling Holes In The Air: Why The Ninth Circuit In Pakootas V. Teck Cominco Should Decline To Open Up A New Hole In Coverage That Would Circumvent Cerla Arranger Liability For Sites Contaminated By Aerial Emissions, Frank Cioffi
Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy
In order to frame the legal controversy, Part II of this comment provides background information on the relevant provisions of CERCLA, RCRA, and the Clean Air Act, and presents a brief summary of the physical and legal history of the Teck Cominco smelter and the Upper Columbia River site. Part III of this comment analyzes the controversy by examining the statutes themselves, as well as recent developments in the case law regarding arranger liability. While the statutes and the case law establish liability on their own, Part III also looks to the legislative history and finds confirmation that Congress intended …
