University Of Hawaii At Hilo: International Female Student Diversity And Inclusion Workshop, Leslie Lehuanani Mcclung

Capstone Collection

The purpose of the University of Hawaii at Hilo’ Women’s Center is to provide advocacy, access, education, equity and equality to women and minority students on campus. On March 8, 2016, The Women’s Center at the University of Hawaii at Hilo held an International Women’s Day event. During the event, the topic about their experiences here at UH Hilo was brought up. Five of the seven panelists felt like they lacked the knowledge and support of on-campus resources including the Women’s Center. The response to the women’s day event led the Women’s Center staff to investigate further why this was. …

Application Of Group Testing For Analyzing Noisy Networks, Vladimir Ufimtsev Jul 2016

Application Of Group Testing For Analyzing Noisy Networks, Vladimir Ufimtsev

Student Work

My dissertation focuses on developing scalable algorithms for analyzing large complex networks and evaluating how the results alter with changes to the network. Network analysis has become a ubiquitous and very effective tool in big data analysis, particularly for understanding the mechanisms of complex systems that arise in diverse disciplines such as cybersecurity [83], biology [15], sociology [5], and epidemiology [7]. However, data from real-world systems are inherently noisy because they are influenced by fluctuations in experiments, subjective interpretation of data, and limitation of computing resources. Therefore, the corresponding networks are also approximate. This research addresses these issues of obtaining …

Radial Glia Inhibit Peripheral Glial Infiltration Into The Spinal Cord At Motor Exit Point Transition Zones, Cody J. Smith, Kimberly Johnson, Taylor G. Welsh, Michael J.F. Barresi, Sarah Kucenas Jul 2016

Radial Glia Inhibit Peripheral Glial Infiltration Into The Spinal Cord At Motor Exit Point Transition Zones, Cody J. Smith, Kimberly Johnson, Taylor G. Welsh, Michael J.F. Barresi, Sarah Kucenas

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

In the mature vertebrate nervous system, central and peripheral nervous system (CNS and PNS, respectively) GLIA myelinate distinct motor axon domains at the motor exit point transition zone (MEP TZ). How these cells preferentially associate with and myelinate discrete, non-overlapping CNS versus PNS axonal segments, is unknown. Using in vivo imaging and genetic cell ablation in zebrafish, we demonstrate that radial glia restrict migration of PNS glia into the spinal cord during development. Prior to development of radial glial endfeet, peripheral cells freely migrate back and forth across the MEP TZ. However, upon maturation, peripherally located cells never enter the …

'Opting‐Out': The Cinematic Representation Of Hijra In Santhosh Souparnika's Ardhanaari (2012), T. K. Sreedevi Jul 2016

'Opting‐Out': The Cinematic Representation Of Hijra In Santhosh Souparnika's Ardhanaari (2012), T. K. Sreedevi

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper explores the cinematic representation of Hijrasi in the Malayalam film Ardhanaari (Light Falls on an Obscure World, 2012), directed by Santhosh Souparnika. Apart from the usual male/female binary opposition, this film is concerned in particular with the notion of Third Gender as a discursive site of intervention. The cultural discourses inherent to this concept are central to this paper.

Performing Authorship In A Queer Time And Place: A Case Study Of Yonfan, Shi‐Yan Chao Jul 2016

Performing Authorship In A Queer Time And Place: A Case Study Of Yonfan, Shi‐Yan Chao

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

An examination of the work of Chinese diasporic gay filmmaker Yonfan, with special attention to his Bugis Street (妖街皇后Yao jie huang hou, 1995) and Bishonen (美少年之戀Mei shao nian zhi lian, 1998), leads to a reappraisal of the meaning of gay authorship. Making use of the various intertextual discourses, Yonfan locates queer connotations in a historically sensitive, transnational framework, suggesting as he does so that recurring themes and particular stylistics are inscribed in terms of queer space, queer temporality/affect, and queer aesthetics and pleasures. These, I contend, are foundational to the "mise-en-scène of desire" that notably privileges non-normative desires and subjects …

Habitats For Whom Or What: Barney Cheng's Baby Steps (2015), Affect Politics And Transgender Bodily 'Housing', Lucifer Hung

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper proposes a queer reading against normalized imagination of "residence (as) rights" based absolutely on property ownership and hetero‐reproductive familial narrative. My argument will build upon the event of "Clan Wang's ancestors' house being demolished by [a] heartless government" from March, 2012, to trace the condition in which Taiwan's land mass (especially those in urban areas) has increasingly become a post‐capitalism' pawn, handled ruthlessly together by cooperation, the state apparatus and legal/governing system. What I am most concerned with is less the non‐normative, even recalcitrant possibility of intervention into the rights discourse and rhetoric of the norm, which argues …

Free‐Indirect‐Discourse Reboot: Beijing Queer Independent Cinema As A Mediating Environment, Victor Fan Jul 2016

Free‐Indirect‐Discourse Reboot: Beijing Queer Independent Cinema As A Mediating Environment, Victor Fan

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In this essay, I first introduce the background of queer independent filmmaking in Beijing—in theory and practice—and its uneasy, if not outright antagonistic, relationship with a state authority that has compelled filmmakers, festival curators, and critics to rethink and reconstruct queer cinema, as what Weihong Bao would call a mediating environment. By mediating environment, I mean that contemporary Chinese queer cinema is best understood not only as a collection of films, but also an interactive and intersubjective sociopolitical and critical discourse among the audience, political activists, filmmakers, critics, and scholars through film and video, critical writing, on-site and online discussion, …

Response Of Mercury In A Forest Stream To Lime Application: Accelerated Watershed Recovery, Geoffrey Dean Millard Jul 2016

Response Of Mercury In A Forest Stream To Lime Application: Accelerated Watershed Recovery, Geoffrey Dean Millard

Dissertations - ALL

Following decreases in acid deposition, some impacted surface waters in northern Europe and the northeastern USA are beginning to recover. The resultant increases in pH in these waters has coincided with increased dissolved organic carbon concentrations, which is also correlated with increases in both total mercury and methylmercury concentrations. Understanding how ecosystem mercury dynamics respond to recovery from acid deposition has important implications for fisheries and human exposure. Honnedaga Lake is one of seven lakes in the Adirondack Park of New York State with a heritage Brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) population, making the bioavailability and trophic transfer of mercury (Hg) …

Deprotection And Reductive Amination Methodology Of N-Boc-3-Amino-4-Halopyridines, Christopher Alexander Wilhelmsen Jul 2016

Deprotection And Reductive Amination Methodology Of N-Boc-3-Amino-4-Halopyridines, Christopher Alexander Wilhelmsen

Dissertations - ALL

The following describes a protocol for the one-pot deprotection and reductive amination of N-Boc-3-amino-4-halopyridines. The intermediate 3-amino-4-chloropyridinium trifluoroacetate salt combined with trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate (TMSOTf) effectively facilitates condensation with a carbonyl moiety. The corresponding imine is subsequently reduced using sodium triacetoxyborohydride. The product, N-alkyl-3-amino-4-halopyridines, provides an effective synthon for our previously reported synthesis of imidazo[4,5-c]pyridines. The current approach greatly improves upon previously alkylation methods of these aryl amines; providing an expanded substrate scope with excellent yields.

Social Beliefs, Agonistic Goals, Anger, And Biased Perceptions Of Outgroups: A Social Action Theory Of Covert Racial Prejudice, Mariam Parekh Jul 2016

Social Beliefs, Agonistic Goals, Anger, And Biased Perceptions Of Outgroups: A Social Action Theory Of Covert Racial Prejudice, Mariam Parekh

Dissertations - ALL

Racial prejudice and discrimination are an important societal and public health problem. Approaches to understanding the origins of prejudice and discrimination have focused on attitudes, both overt (explicit) and covert (implicit). But attitudes correlate only modestly with implicit biases and explicit discriminatory behavior. Drawing on Social Action Theory, this study tested the hypothesis that the relationship between racial attitudes and implicit biases / overt discrimination is moderated by socially-induced personal regulatory struggles that take the form of agonistic striving, or persistently seeking to influence or control other people. The research tested the hypotheses that agonistic striving fosters implicit racial biases …

Making Men In The City: Articulating Masculinity And Space In Urban India, Madhura Lohokare Jul 2016

Making Men In The City: Articulating Masculinity And Space In Urban India, Madhura Lohokare

Dissertations - ALL

In my dissertation, I illustrate the way in which processes in contemporary urban India structure the making/ unmaking of gendered identities for young men in a working class, scheduled caste neighborhood in the western Indian city of Pune. Present day Pune, an aspiring metropolis, presents a complex socio-spatial intersection of neoliberal processes and peculiar historical trajectories of caste exclusion; this dissertation seeks to highlight how socio-spatial dynamics of the city produce and sustain gendered identities and inequalities in Pune, a city hitherto neglected in academic research. Also, my focus on young men’s gendered identities speaks to a growing recognition that …

A Dynamic Run-Profile Energy-Aware Approach For Scheduling Computationally Intensive Bioinformatics Applications, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali Jul 2016

A Dynamic Run-Profile Energy-Aware Approach For Scheduling Computationally Intensive Bioinformatics Applications, Sachin Pawaskar, Hesham Ali

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

High Performance Computing (HPC) resources are housed in large datacenters, which consume exorbitant amounts of energy and are quickly demanding attention from businesses as they result in high operating costs. On the other hand HPC environments have been very useful to researchers in many emerging areas in life sciences such as Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics. In an earlier work, we introduced a dynamic model for energy aware scheduling (EAS) in a HPC environment; the model is domain agnostic and incorporates both the deadline parameter as well as energy parameters for computationally intensive applications. Our proposed EAS model incorporates 2-phases. In …

A Psychometric Exploration Of Visuo-Constructive Ability And Processing Speed, Kayla Marie Lejeune Jul 2016

A Psychometric Exploration Of Visuo-Constructive Ability And Processing Speed, Kayla Marie Lejeune

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

This study was conducted in order to explore the relationship between visuo-motor integration and processing speed; specifically, whether the WISC-V Coding B subtest is a better measure of visuo-motor ability. Visuo-motor ability and processing speed were assessed in a small, clinical sample (N = 13) of children and adolescents (ages 8-16 years). Results of correlation analyses indicated no significant relationship between visuo-constructive ability and processing speed, as measured by the Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (Beery VMI) and the Coding subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children- Fifth Edition (WISC-V). Results of one correlational analysis revealed that the …

Functional Analysis Of Grapevine Sts7 And Sts22 Promoters, Lianhua Lianhua Xu Jul 2016

Functional Analysis Of Grapevine Sts7 And Sts22 Promoters, Lianhua Lianhua Xu

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Stilbenic compounds are a group of phytoalexins that are produced by a limited number of plant species including grapevine to defend against diseases. Stilbene synthase (STS) is the key enzyme that catalyzes the biosynthesis of stilbenic compounds. Previous results indicated a significant increase in the abundance of transcripts of STS7 and STS22 genes in powdery mildew-infected Cabernet Sauvignon leaves. I isolated the promoter sequences of STS7 and STS22 from grapevine Vitis aestivalis "Norton"(Va) and Vitis vinifera "Cabernet Sauvignon"(Vv) and studied their activities in transgenic plants. The results showed high activity of VaSTS7 and VaSTS22 promoters in transgenic plant leaves at …

Identifying The Perspectives Of Undergraduate Students On Effective Teacher Dispositions, Liza Zehner Jul 2016

Identifying The Perspectives Of Undergraduate Students On Effective Teacher Dispositions, Liza Zehner

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The desire to study the topic of effective teacher dispositions began about 20 years ago and has now led to the completion of this study. It is evident for everyone who either has gone through school or has had children go through school that an effective teacher can have a tremendous influence on how we function in school and even how much we believe in ourselves. Research has shown effective teachers possess certain dispositions. These dispositions reflect their character through values, beliefs, and behaviors. The impact to which these dispositions have on student learning is a topic in need of …

International Communication: The Effect Of Culture On The Content, Organization, And Design Of Nonprofit Annual Reports, Lia Blanchard Jul 2016

International Communication: The Effect Of Culture On The Content, Organization, And Design Of Nonprofit Annual Reports, Lia Blanchard

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

A professional document must convey information with a high degree of readability and usability. The inclusion of visual rhetoric, the transformation of technical writing from product-oriented to user-oriented information, the development of Simplified Technical English, and the adoption of plain writing practices are all steps toward communicating effectively in today’s “postnational” world. Continued evolution requires a deeper understanding of cultural differences—acknowledging not only differing symbols, heroes, and rituals, but the values that inspire them. This study examines the content, organization, and design of two nonprofit annual reports produced in 2013: one from the Russian Federation and one from the United …

Comparison Of Two Surface Contamination Sampling Techniques Conducted For The Characterization Of Two Pajarito Site Manhattan Project National Historic Park Properties, Lopez Tammy Jul 2016

Comparison Of Two Surface Contamination Sampling Techniques Conducted For The Characterization Of Two Pajarito Site Manhattan Project National Historic Park Properties, Lopez Tammy

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

Technical Area-18 (TA-18), also known as Pajarito Site, is located on Los Alamos National Laboratory property and has historic buildings that will be included in the Manhattan Project National Historic Park. Characterization studies of metal contamination were needed in two of the four buildings that are on the historic registry in this area, a “battleship” bunker building (TA-18-0002) and the Pond cabin (TA-18-0029). However, these two buildings have been exposed to the elements, are decades old, and have porous and rough surfaces (wood and concrete). Due to these conditions, it was questioned whether standard wipe sampling would be adequate to …

© 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd In terminal Ediacaran strata of South China, the onset of calcareous biomineralization is preserved in the paleontological transition from Conotubus to Cloudina in repetitious limestone facies of the Dengying Formation. Both fossils have similar size, funnel-in-funnel construction, and epibenthic lifestyle, but Cloudina is biomineralized, whereas Conotubus is not. To provide environmental context for this evolutionary milestone, we conducted a high-resolution elemental and stable isotope study of the richly fossiliferous Gaojiashan Member. Coincident with the first appearance of Cloudina is a significant positive carbonate carbon isotope excursion (up to +6‰) and an increase in …

Faculty Publications

The Lone Star tick, Amblyomma americanum, is endemic to the southeastern United States and capable of transmitting pathogenic diseases and causing non-pathogenic conditions. To remain firmly attached to the host, the tick secretes a proteinaceous matrix termed the cement cone which hardens around the tick’s mouthparts to assist in the attachment of the tick as well as to protect the mouthparts from the host immune system. Cement cones collected from ticks on a host are commonly contaminated with host skin and hair making analysis of the cone difficult. To reduce the contamination found in the cement cone, we have adapted …

The Soviet Biological Weapons Program And Its Legacy In Today’S Russia, Raymond A. Zilinskas Jul 2016

The Soviet Biological Weapons Program And Its Legacy In Today’S Russia, Raymond A. Zilinskas

WMD Occasional Papers

In its first Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) Case Study, the Center for the Study of Weapons of Mass Destruction (CSWMD) at the National Defense University examined President Richard M. Nixon’s decision, on November 25, 1969, to terminate the U.S. offensive biological weapons program.1 This occasional paper seeks to explain why the Soviet government, at approximately the same time, decided to do essentially the opposite, namely, to establish a large biological warfare (BW) program that would be driven by newly discovered and powerful biotechnologies. By introducing the innovation of recombinant DNA technology—commonly referred to as genetic engineering—the Soviets were attempting …

Heterochrony Of Cranial Bones In Amniota And The Phylogenetic Placement Of Testudines, Kathleen Sagarin Jul 2016

Heterochrony Of Cranial Bones In Amniota And The Phylogenetic Placement Of Testudines, Kathleen Sagarin

Masters Theses

The study of developmental systems may help to resolve the disagreement between morphological data and molecular data when it comes to the placement of Testudines among Amniota. Among other unique morphological adaptations, turtles possess an anapsid (unfenestrated) condition of the temporal region of the skull. If turtles are descended from diapsids, as molecular data suggests, this implies a rapid transformation of the temporal region from the diapsid condition to the anapsid condition. This study specifically addressed temporal bone heterochony among amniotes using the methods of Continuous Analysis (Germain and Laurin 2009) and Parsimov-based Genetic Inference (Harrison and Larsson 2008) to …

Engineering Faculty Works

We sought to explore mechanistically how intermittent high-mechanical-index (MI) diagnostic ultrasound impulses restore microvascular flow. Thrombotic microvascular obstruction was created in the rat hindlimb muscle of 36 rats. A diagnostic transducer confirmed occlusion with low-MI imaging during an intravenous microbubble infusion. This same transducer was used to intermittently apply ultrasound with an MI that produced stable or inertial cavitation (IC) for 10 min through a tissue-mimicking phantom. A nitric oxide inhibitor, L-Nω-nitroarginine methyl ester (L-NAME), was pre-administered to six rats. Plateau microvascular contrast intensity quantified skeletal microvascular blood volume, and postmortem staining was used to detect perivascular hemorrhage. Intermittent IC …
