Seawater Acidification More Than Warming Presents A Challenge For Two Antarctic Macroalgal-Associated Amphipods, Julie B. Schram, Kathryn M. Schoenrock, James B. Mcclintock, Charles D. Amsler, Robert A. Angus

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Elevated atmospheric pCO2 concentrations are triggering seawater pH reductions and seawater temperature increases along the western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP). These factors in combination have the potential to influence organisms in an antagonistic, additive, or synergistic manner. The amphipods Gondogeneia antarctica and Paradexamine fissicauda represent prominent members of macroalgal-associated mesograzer assemblages of the WAP. Our primary objective was to investigate amphipod behavioral and physiological responses to reduced seawater pH and elevated temperature to evaluate potential cascading ecological impacts. For 90 d, amphipods were exposed to combinations of seawater conditions based on present ambient (pH 8.0, 1.5°C) and predicted end-of-century conditions (pH …

The Effects Of Amphetamine Exposure On Neurodevelopment And Behavior In Early Life Stages Of Danio Rerio, Jennifer D. Bullard Jul 2016

The Effects Of Amphetamine Exposure On Neurodevelopment And Behavior In Early Life Stages Of Danio Rerio, Jennifer D. Bullard

Master of Science in Integrative Biology Theses

Amphetamines are frequently prescribed to young children for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Due to the recent rise in ADHD diagnoses and the resulting increase in amphetamine intake in children, we investigated how amphetamine exposure impacts the development of stereotyped behaviors and the neural circuit that governs these behaviors. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) was used as our model organism because of the extensively studied developmental milestones these fish provide. Using escape responses as a behavior model, we exposed embryos to three doses of amphetamine (10 μg/ml, 20 μg/ml, and 30 μg/ml) environmentally during the first 48 hours of …

Semi-Automated Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Microfluidic Immunoarray For On-Line Capture And Detection Of Cancer Protein Biomarkers, Brunah Akinyi Otieno Jul 2016

Semi-Automated Ultrasensitive Electrochemical Microfluidic Immunoarray For On-Line Capture And Detection Of Cancer Protein Biomarkers, Brunah Akinyi Otieno

Doctoral Dissertations

Early cancer diagnoses promise to improve treatment outcomes and patient survival rates. However, current cancer diagnostics often rely on finding a tumor, making early detection difficult and possibly compromising therapy outcomes. Screening for cancer without tumor detection can be based on assays of body fluids such as serum or plasma for cancer biomarker proteins to provide an instantaneous record of a patient’s disease status. Measurement of these biomarker proteins should be accurate, sensitive, cheap and preferably at point-of-care (POC) for translation to the clinic. In addition, due to low predictive power of some biomarker proteins and their over-expression by multiple …

Planning For Sustainability In Small Municipalities: The Influence Of Interest Groups, Growth Patterns, And Institutional Characteristics, Vanessa R. Levesque, Kathleen P. Bell, Aram J. K. Calhoun Jul 2016

Planning For Sustainability In Small Municipalities: The Influence Of Interest Groups, Growth Patterns, And Institutional Characteristics, Vanessa R. Levesque, Kathleen P. Bell, Aram J. K. Calhoun

Faculty Publications

How and why small municipalities promote sustainability through planning efforts is poorly understood. We analyzed ordinances in 451 Maine municipalities and tested theories of policy adoption using regression analysis. We found that smaller communities do adopt programs that contribute to sustainability relevant to their scale and context. In line with the political market theory, we found that municipalities with strong environmental interests, higher growth, and more formal governments were more likely to adopt these policies. Consideration of context and capacity in planning for sustainability will help planners better identify and benefit from collaboration, training, and outreach opportunities.

From the foods we eat and the houses we construct, to our religious practices and political organization, to who we can marry and the types of games we teach our children, the diversity of cultural practices in the world is astounding. Yet, our ability to visualize and understand this diversity is limited by the ways it has been documented and shared: on a culture-by-culture basis, in locally-told stories or difficult-to-access repositories. In this paper we introduce D-PLACE, the Database of Places, Language, Culture, and Environment. This expandable and open-access database (accessible at https://d-place.org) brings together a dispersed corpus of …

Trends In Minimizing And Treating Industrial Wastes For Sustainable Environment, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan Jul 2016

Trends In Minimizing And Treating Industrial Wastes For Sustainable Environment, Muthanna H. Al-Dahhan

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

While treating the industrially produced wastes through various processes such as physical, chemical, biological and radiation processes have been implemented on various scales and is the focus of various studies and development, the trend of minimizing and/or eliminating the pollutions at the source via developing and selecting proper catalytic multiphase reactors is worth to be given proper attention and consideration which is the focus of this manuscript beside outlining the processes used for treating the wastes. In order to achieve such goal in minimizing the wastes, these multiphase reactors must be well understood, studied, scaled up and designed. This can …

Seasonal Sea Ice Variability In Eastern Fram Strait Over The Last 2000 Years, P Cabedo-Sanz, St Belt Jul 2016

Seasonal Sea Ice Variability In Eastern Fram Strait Over The Last 2000 Years, P Cabedo-Sanz, St Belt

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

We present a high-resolution (ca. 50 years) biomarker-based reconstruction of seasonal sea ice conditions for the West Svalbard continental margin covering the last ca. 2k years. Our reconstruction is based on the distributions of sea ice algal (IP25) and phytoplankton (brassicasterol and HBI III) lipids in marine sediment core MSM5/5-712-1 retrieved in 2007. The individual and combined (PIP25) temporal profiles, together with estimates of spring sea ice concentration [SpSIC (%)] based on a recent calibration, suggest that sea ice conditions during the interval ca. 50–1700 AD may not have been as variable as described in previous reconstructions, with SpSIC generally …

The Α-Arrestin Arrdc3 Regulates The Endosomal Residence Time And Intracellular Signaling Of The Β2-Adrenergic Receptor., Xufan Tian, Roshanak Irannejad, Shanna L. Bowman, Yang Du, Manojkumar A. Puthenveedu, Mark Von Zastrow, Jeffrey L. Benovic

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers

Arrestin domain-containing protein 3 (ARRDC3) is a member of the mammalian α-arrestin family, which is predicted to share similar tertiary structure with visual-/β-arrestins and also contains C-terminal PPXY motifs that mediate interaction with E3 ubiquitin ligases. Recently, ARRDC3 has been proposed to play a role in regulating the trafficking of G protein-coupled receptors, although mechanistic insight into this process is lacking. Here, we focused on characterizing the role of ARRDC3 in regulating the trafficking of the β2-adrenergic receptor (β2AR). We find that ARRDC3 primarily localizes to EEA1-positive early endosomes and directly interacts with the β2AR in a ligand-independent manner. Although …

Molecular Response Of Spartina Alterniflora To The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Mariano Alvarez Jul 2016

Molecular Response Of Spartina Alterniflora To The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, Mariano Alvarez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although the “genome as a blueprint” metaphor has been pervasive in biology, recent advances in molecular biology have revealed a complex network of regulatory machinery that dynamically regulated molecular processes in response to environmental conditions. However, these patterns, as well as the evolutionary processes that underlie them, remain understudied in natural conditions. In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill released an estimated 4.9 million barrels of oil into the Gulf of Mexico, making landfall on salt marsh habitat dominated by the foundation species Spartina alterniflora. Despite the severe impacts to phenotype and fitness, S. alterniflora proved remarkably resilient in …

Material Expertise: Applying Object-Oriented Rhetoric In Marine Policy, Zachary Parke Dixon Jul 2016

Material Expertise: Applying Object-Oriented Rhetoric In Marine Policy, Zachary Parke Dixon

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation applies object-oriented rhetorics and posthuman philosophies to environmental policy deliberation in order to help bridge gaps between policy makers, scientists, and citizens. For environmental policy scholars the non-credentialed expertise of local, or indigenous stakeholders is valued as possessing technical, objective merit that can improve the development and implementation of environmental policies. However, the utilization of stakeholder expertise in environmental policy faces serious challenges in terms of finding common grounds for communication within complex techno-social systems, of overcoming deep cultural differences and perceptions, and grave ethical issues of access and power. This dissertation develops two case studies of marine …

Computational Modeling Of Allosteric Stimulation Of Nipah Virus Host Binding Protein, Priyanka Dutta Jul 2016

Computational Modeling Of Allosteric Stimulation Of Nipah Virus Host Binding Protein, Priyanka Dutta

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nipah belongs to the family of paramyxoviruses that cause numerous fatal diseases in humans and farm animals. There are no FDA approved drugs for Nipah or any of the paramyxoviruses. Designing antiviral therapies that are more resistant to viral mutations require understanding of molecular details underlying infection. This dissertation focuses on obtaining molecular insights into the very first step of infection by Nipah. Such details, in fact, remain unknown for all paramyxoviruses. Infection begins with the allosteric stimulation of Nipah virus host binding protein by host cell receptors. Understanding molecular details of this stimulation process have been challenging mainly because, …

Examining Student And Teacher Perceptions Of The Classroom Social Environment Across School Context: Effects Of Individual Factors, Keri Stewart Jul 2016

Examining Student And Teacher Perceptions Of The Classroom Social Environment Across School Context: Effects Of Individual Factors, Keri Stewart

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although teachers and students are the primary actors in the classroom environment, they often have different perceptions of the instructional and relational aspects of the classroom. Despite these differences, research indicates perceptions of the quality of the classroom social environment have implications for both student and teacher outcomes. Additionally, research has indicated the differences in perceptions occur not only between students and teachers, but also among individual students within classrooms. The extent and the manner in which these perceptions converge may vary across different class and school contexts. School and class context, as well as individual characteristics and beliefs have …

A Heavy Metal P-Type Atpase Oshma4 Prevents Copper Accumulation In Rice Grain, Xin-Yuan Huang, Fenglin Deng, Naoki Yamaji, Shannon R.M. Pinson, Miho Fujii-Kashino, John Danku, Alex Douglas, Mary Lou Guerinot, David Salt, Jian Feng Ma Jul 2016

A Heavy Metal P-Type Atpase Oshma4 Prevents Copper Accumulation In Rice Grain, Xin-Yuan Huang, Fenglin Deng, Naoki Yamaji, Shannon R.M. Pinson, Miho Fujii-Kashino, John Danku, Alex Douglas, Mary Lou Guerinot, David Salt, Jian Feng Ma

Dartmouth Scholarship

Rice is a major source of calories and mineral nutrients for over half the world's human population. However, little is known in rice about the genetic basis of variation in accumulation of copper (Cu), an essential but potentially toxic nutrient. Here we identify OsHMA4 as the likely causal gene of a quantitative trait locus controlling Cu accumulation in rice grain. We provide evidence that OsHMA4 functions to sequester Cu into root vacuoles, limiting Cu accumulation in the grain. The difference in grain Cu accumulation is most likely attributed to a single amino acid substitution that leads to different OsHMA4 transport …

Cross-Species Mind-Reading, Stevan Harnad Jul 2016

Cross-Species Mind-Reading, Stevan Harnad

Animal Sentience

We can never be sure anyone else is sentient. But we can be sure enough in the case of other people, nonhuman primates, mammals, birds, fish, lower vertebrates and invertebrates as to make scepticism academic and otiose (not to mention monumentally cruel). The only genuinely uncertain kinds of cases are jellyfish, microbes and plants. The rest is not about whether but what they are feeling.

Some Results On Moment Of Order Statistics For The Quadratic Hazard Rate Distribution, Abdullah Al-Hossain, Javid Gani Dar

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In this paper, we study the sampling distribution of order statistics of the quadratic hazard rate distribution (QHRD). We consider the single and product moment of order statistics from QHRD and establish some recurrence relations for single and product moments of order statistics. These expressions are used to calculate the mean and variances.

Practical Targeted Learning From Large Data Sets By Survey Sampling, Patrice Bertail, Antoine Chambaz, Emilien Joly Jul 2016

Practical Targeted Learning From Large Data Sets By Survey Sampling, Patrice Bertail, Antoine Chambaz, Emilien Joly

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

We address the practical construction of asymptotic confidence intervals for smooth (i.e., pathwise differentiable), real-valued statistical
parameters by targeted learning from independent and identically
distributed data in contexts where sample size is so large that it poses
computational challenges. We observe some summary measure of all data and select a sub-sample from the complete data set by Poisson rejective sampling with unequal inclusion probabilities based on the summary measures. Targeted learning is carried out from the easier to handle sub-sample. We derive a central limit theorem for the targeted minimum loss estimator (TMLE) which enables the construction of …

First Birth Interval: A Comparative Study Of Two Indian States, C. B. Gupta, Brijesh P. Singh, Sachin Kumar

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

First birth interval has always been at the forefront of demographers due to its impact on all demographic and non-demographic characteristics of a female. In our present paper we analysed the data from N.F.H.S.-3 for two states viz; Kerala and Rajasthan. We tried to identify the link between various socio-economic and demographic factors with first birth interval of a female. In addition to statistical measures, proportional hazard analysis in combination with life table was applied to investigate the impact of various factors on first birth interval.

Influence Of Free Water Availability On A Desert Carnivore And Herbivore, Bryan M. Kluever, Eric M. Gese, Stephen Dempsey Jul 2016

Influence Of Free Water Availability On A Desert Carnivore And Herbivore, Bryan M. Kluever, Eric M. Gese, Stephen Dempsey

Wildland Resources Faculty Publications

Anthropogenic manipulation of finite resources on the landscape to benefit individual species or communities is commonly employed by conservation and management agencies. One such action in arid regions is the construction and maintenance of water developments (i.e., wildlife guzzlers) adding free water on the landscape to buttress local populations, influence animal movements, or affect distributions of certain species of interest. Despite their prevalence, the utility of wildlife guzzlers remains largely untested. We employed a before–after control-impact (BACI) design over a 4-year period on the US Army Dugway Proving Ground, Utah, USA, to determine whether water availability at wildlife guzzlers influenced …

Speicher, Hsin-Yao Tang, Valentina Vaira, Silvano Bosari, Alessandro Palleschi, Paolo Rampini, Andrew V. Kossenkov, Lucia R. Languino, Dario C. Altieri

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

Mitochondria must buffer the risk of proteotoxic stress to preserve bioenergetics, but the role of these mechanisms in disease is poorly understood. Using a proteomics screen, we now show that the mitochondrial unfoldase-peptidase complex ClpXP associates with the oncoprotein survivin and the respiratory chain Complex II subunit succinate dehydrogenase B (SDHB) in mitochondria of tumor cells. Knockdown of ClpXP subunits ClpP or ClpX induces the accumulation of misfolded SDHB, impairing oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production while activating "stress" signals of 5' adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation and autophagy. Deregulated mitochondrial respiration induced by ClpXP targeting causes oxidative stress, which …
