Maternal Age Of Menarche And Blood Pressure In Adolescence: Evidence From Hong Kong’S “Children Of 1997” Birth Cohort, Tsz Chun Lai, Gabriel Matthew Leung, C Mary Schooling
Publications and Research
Background Age of puberty has declined substantially in developed settings and is now declining in the rest of the world with economic development. Early age of puberty is associated with noncommunicable diseases in adulthood, and may be a long-term driver of population health with effects over generations. In a non-Western setting, we examined the association of maternal age of menarche with blood pressure in late childhood/adolescence.
Methods We used generalised estimating equations to estimate the adjusted association of maternal age of menarche with age-, sex- and height-adjusted blood pressure z-score from 10 to 16 years in Hong Kong’s population-representative birth …

A Comparative Study Of K-Spectrum-Based Error Correction Methods For Next-Generation Sequencing Data Analysis, Isaac Akogwu, Nan Wang, Chaoyang Zhang, Ping Gong
Faculty Publications
Background: Innumerable opportunities for new genomic research have been stimulated by advancement in high-throughput next-generation sequencing (NGS). However, the pitfall of NGS data abundance is the complication of distinction between true biological variants and sequence error alterations during downstream analysis. Many error correction methods have been developed to correct erroneous NGS reads before further analysis, but independent evaluation of the impact of such dataset features as read length, genome size, and coverage depth on their performance is lacking. This comparative study aims to investigate the strength and weakness as well as limitations of some newest k-spectrum-based methods and …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
MIDA boronates (N-methylimidodiacetic boronic acid esters) serve as an increasingly general platform for building-block-based small molecule construction, largely due to the dramatic and general rate differences with which they are hydrolysed under various basic conditions. Yet the mechanistic underpinnings of these rate differences have remained unclear, hindering efforts to address current limitations of this chemistry. Here we show that there are two distinct mechanisms for this hydrolysis: one is base-mediated and the other neutral. The former can proceed more than three orders of magnitude faster, and involves rate-limiting attack at a MIDA carbonyl carbon by hydroxide. The alternative ‘neutral’ hydrolysis …

Aminoglycosides such as amikacin continue to be part of the backbone of treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR- TB). We measured amikacin concentrations in 28 MDR-TB patients in Botswana receiving amikacin therapy together with oral levofloxacin, ethionamide, cycloserine, and pyrazinamide and calculated areas under the concentration-time curves from 0 to 24 h (AUC0 –24). The patients were followed monthly for sputum culture conversion based on liquid cultures. The median duration of amikacin therapy was 184 (range, 28 to 866) days, at a median dose of 17.30 (range 11.11 to 19.23) mg/kg. Only 11 (39%) pa- tients had sputum culture conversion during …

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications
Graphene nanosheets and graphene nanoribbons, G combined with vanadium pentoxide (VO) nanobelts (VNBs) and VNBs forming GVNB composites with varying compositions were synthesized via a one-step low temperature facile hydrothermal decomposition method as high-performance electrochemical pseudocapacitive electrodes. VNBs from vanadium pentoxides (VO) are formed in the presence of graphene oxide (GO), a mild oxidant, which transforms into reduced GO (rGOHT), assisting in enhancing the electronic conductivity coupled with the mechanical robustness of VNBs. From electron microscopy, surface sensitive spectroscopy and other complementary structural characterization, hydrothermally-produced rGO nanosheets/nanoribbons are decorated with and inserted within the VNBs' layered crystal structure, which further …

Spatiotemporal Interpolation Methods For The Application Of Estimating Population Exposure To Fine Particulate Matter In The Contiguous U.S. And A Real-Time Web Application, Lixin Li, Xiaolu Zhou, Marc Kalo, Reinhard E. Piltner
Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications
Appropriate spatiotemporal interpolation is critical to the assessment of relationships between environmental exposures and health outcomes. A powerful assessment of human exposure to environmental agents would incorporate spatial and temporal dimensions simultaneously. This paper compares shape function (SF)-based and inverse distance weighting (IDW)-based spatiotemporal interpolation methods on a data set of PM2.5 data in the contiguous U.S. Particle pollution, also known as particulate matter (PM), is composed of microscopic solids or liquid droplets that are so small that they can get deep into the lungs and cause serious health problems. PM2.5 refers to particles with a mean aerodynamic …
Performativity And Creativity In Senior Secondary Drama Classrooms, Kirsten Lambert, Peter R. Wright, Jan Currie, Robin Pascoe
Performativity And Creativity In Senior Secondary Drama Classrooms, Kirsten Lambert, Peter R. Wright, Jan Currie, Robin Pascoe
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This article examines the intersection between the senior secondary drama classroom, creativity and neoliberalism. Informed by a research project involving fifteen West Australian drama teachers and thirteen students, it considers the drama classroom as one site where tensions between the performative needs of neoliberal education and the more humanistic desires that drama teachers embody are enacted. This paper suggests that drama education can be a powerfully transformative vehicle for creative and innovative thinking because of its spatially unique classroom environment and embodied nature. However, collisions between rhetoric and reality, social good and economic return, can mean that young people are …

Sibling Rivalry Or Sibling Revelry: A Multifactorial Approach To Understanding The Sibling Relationship From The View Of Typically Developing Siblings Of Children With Asd, Christine Ghilain
Open Access Dissertations
The sibling relationship is the longest lasting relationship in a person’s life, and therefore significant research has sought to understanding genetic and environmental factors that shape the development of this long-lasting bond. The current study aimed to understand the experience of typically-developing (TD) siblings growing up with a sibling who has an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), and to determine if their experiences differ from neurotypical (NT) siblings (children who do not have a sibling with ASD). The focus of this study was on the TD siblings’ perceptions of their own self-concept, social support, parental partiality, and overall satisfaction with his …

Sunlight induced chlorophyll a fluorescence (SICF) can be used as a probe to estimate chlorophyll a concentrations (Chl) and infer phytoplankton physiology. SICF at ∼685 nm has been widely applied to studies of natural waters. SICF around 740 nm has been demonstrated to cause a narrow reflectance peak at ∼761 nm in the reflectance spectra of terrestrial vegetation. This narrow peak has also been observed in the reflectance spectra of natural waters, but its mechanism and applications have not yet been investigated and it has often been treated as measurement artifacts. In this study, we aimed to interpret …

Despite evidence that males drink more than females, there is much to be learned about gendered explanations for sex differences in alcohol use. We use the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health data to investigate gendered self-concept as related to alcohol use and related consequences among a sample of emerging adults. Dominance Masculinity (e.g., being aggressive, forceful, dominant) was the most consistent predictor of alcohol-related outcomes for both males and females. Endorsement of feminine characteristics (e.g., compassion, understanding, sympathetic) was protective against binge drinking and social consequences for males whereas endorsement of general masculine characteristics (e.g., independent, assertive, …

Super-Intelligence Challenges And Lossless Visual Representation Of High-Dimensional Data, Boris Kovalerchuk
All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences
Fundamental challenges and goals of the cognitive algorithms are moving super-intelligent machines and super-intelligent humans from dreams to reality. This paper is devoted to a technical way to reach some specific aspects of super-intelligence that are beyond the current human cognitive abilities. Specifically the proposed technique is to overcome inabilities to analyze a large amount of abstract numeric high-dimensional data and finding complex patterns in these data with a naked eye. Discovering patterns in multidimensional data using visual means is a long-standing problem in multiple fields and Data Science and Modeling in general. The major challenge is that we cannot …

Perseverance: Psychospiritual And Genetic Perspectives, Tony N. Jelsma, Arielle Johnston, Bruce Vermeer
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
Perseverance constitutes a quality that motivates humankind to press onward usually in the face of significant adversity and resistance. Perseverance is also important in the Christian life. The apostle Paul, using athletic training metaphors, frequently urges his readers to persevere in the faith, even describing his own life as a fight and a race (2 Tim.4:7). Yet, certain groups of people seem to possess a greater measure of perseverance than others have. We are therefore led to ask, “Can our ability to persevere be, in God’s providence, at least partly genetically influenced?”

The North American Geese: Their Biology And Behavior, Paul A. Johnsgard
Zea E-Books Collection
The eight currently recognized species of North American geese are part of a familiar group of birds collectively called waterfowl, all of which are smaller than swans and generally larger than ducks. They include the most popular of our aquatic gamebirds, with several million shot each year by sport hunters. Our two most abundant waterfowl, the Canada goose and snow goose, have populations collectively totaling about 15 million individuals. Like swans, the lifelong pairbonding of geese, their familial care, and prolonged social attachment to their offspring are legendary. Their seasonal migratory flights sometimes span thousands of miles, and the sight …
Individual Differences In Response Of Dorsomedial Prefrontal Cortex Predict Daily Social Behavior, Katherine E. Powers, Robert S. Chavez, Todd F. Heatherton
Individual Differences In Response Of Dorsomedial Prefrontal Cortex Predict Daily Social Behavior, Katherine E. Powers, Robert S. Chavez, Todd F. Heatherton
Dartmouth Scholarship
The capacity to accurately infer the thoughts and intentions of other people is critical for effective social interaction, and neural activity in dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) has long been linked with the extent to which people engage in mental state attribution. In this study, we combined functional neuroimaging and experience sampling methodologies to test the predictive value of this neural response for daily social behaviors. We found that individuals who displayed greater activity in dmPFC when viewing social scenes spent more time around other people on a daily basis. These findings suggest a specific role for the neural mechanisms that …
"Transplanting" Organ Donors With Printers: The Legal And Ethical Implications Of Manufacturing Organs, Katherine A. Smith
"Transplanting" Organ Donors With Printers: The Legal And Ethical Implications Of Manufacturing Organs, Katherine A. Smith
Akron Law Review
Three-dimensional (3D) printing is no longer restricted to simple inanimate objects; that conjecture is a thing of the past. With advancements in many areas of science, living tissues and organs can now be printed through a technique called 3D bioprinting. This technology could potentially save the lives of the 120,000 Americans in need of an organ transplant. However, whether or not a 3D bioprinted organ qualifies as a “human organ” under the National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA) and whether 3D bioprinted organs require federal approval could either delay or completely bar this technology’s promise. The Ninth Circuit’s Flynn v. Holder …
