Adaptive Control Architectures For Mitigating Sensor Attacks In Cyber-Physical Systems, Tansel Yucelen, Wassim M. Haddad, Eric M. Feron
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
The accuracy of sensor measurements is critical to the design of high-performance control systems since sensor uncertainties can significantly deteriorate achievable closed-loop dynamical system performance. Sensor uncertainty can arise due to low sensor quality, sensor failure, or detrimental environmental conditions. For example, relatively cheap sensor suites are used for low-cost, small-scale unmanned vehicle applications that can result in inaccurate sensor measurements. Alternatively, sensor measurements can also be corrupted by malicious attacks if dynamical systems are controlled through large-scale, multilayered communication networks as is the case in cyber-physical systems. This paper presents several adaptive control architectures for stabilization of linear dynamical …

On The Exhangeable Negative Multinomial Distribution And Applications To Analysis Of Rna-Seq. Data, Akwasi Opoku Kusi-Appiah
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This dissertation addresses two types of problems in Applied Statistics. The first deals with the development of a procedure for estimating the correlation structure of RNA-Seq. data and the second type involves introducing a model that can be used to estimate significance of Genesets based on count data such as RNA-Seq. The approach we adopt is to model the RNA-Seq. data by exchangeable negative multinomial distribution. In the first Chapter, we give an overview of the structure of the dissertation, introduce some definition and also introduce the Exchangeable NegativeMultinomial Distribution resulting from relaxing the independence of the Multinomial distribution to …

Cdx4 is a ParaHox family of transcription factor that regulates Hox gene function in patterning and imparts identity to different segments of the body of a vertebrate organism. Somitogenesis, is the periodic and sequential division of the paraxial mesoderm of a vertebrate organism into repetitive segments called somites, which are the precursors of the muscle, dermis and vertebrae. Somite formation is an outcome of strictly orchestrated programs that bring together aspects of growth, fate specification, movement and differentiation of the trunk-tail paraxial mesodermal tissue. Although extensive studies have been carried out to understand the function of Cdx4 in patterning, its …

Transgenerational Effects Of Thermal Stress: Impacts On And Beyond Coral Reproduction, Alyson Kuba
Transgenerational Effects Of Thermal Stress: Impacts On And Beyond Coral Reproduction, Alyson Kuba
HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations
Ocean warming causes stress to corals and records reveal that periods of thermal stress are increasing in frequency and severity. Previous studies show that thermal stress negatively impacts the reproductive output of corals. However, the transgenerational impacts of coral bleaching have never been quantified. As a consequence, it is unclear how ocean warming may alter population dynamics due to effects on reproduction and recruitment. This study quantified the transgenerational impacts of thermal stress in Montastraea cavernosa. To assess transgenerational effects of temperature stress during gametogenesis, colonies were exposed to elevated temperature for two weeks four months prior to spawning, …

- Leaf wetting is often considered to have negative effects on plant function, such that wet environments may select for leaves with certain leaf surface, morphological, and architectural traits that reduce leaf wettability. However, there is growing recognition that leaf wetting can have positive effects.
- We measured variation in two traits, leaf drip tips and leaf water repellency, in a series of nine tropical forest communities occurring along a 3300-m elevation gradient in southern Peru. To extend this climatic gradient, we also assembled published leaf water repellency values from 17 additional sites. We then tested hypotheses for how these traits should …

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a widely conserved signaling molecule that in animals has been adapted as a neurotransmitter. GABA is synthesized from the amino acid glutamate by the action of glutamate decarboxylases (GADs). Two vertebrate genes, GAD1 and GAD2, encode distinct GAD proteins: GAD67 and GAD65, respectively. We have identified a third vertebrate GAD gene, GAD3. This gene is conserved in fishes as well as tetrapods. We analyzed protein sequence, gene structure, synteny, and phylogenetics to identify GAD3 as a homolog of GAD1 and GAD2. Interestingly, we found that GAD3 was lost in the hominid lineage. Because of the importance …

The growth factor progranulin has emerged in recent years as a critical regulator of transformation in several cancer models, including breast cancer, glioblastomas, leukemias, and hepatocellular carcinomas. Several laboratories, including ours, have also demonstrated an important role of progranulin in several genitourinary cancers, including ovarian, endometrial, cervical, prostate, and bladder tumors, where progranulin acts as an autocrine growth factor thereby modulating motility and invasion of transformed cells. In this review, we will focus on the mechanisms of action and regulation of progranulin signaling in genitourinary cancers with a special emphasis on prostate and bladder tumors.

Odorant receptors (ORs) control several aspects of cell fate in olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs), including singular gene choice and axonal identity. The mechanisms of OR-induced axon guidance have been suggested to principally rely on G-protein signalling. Here, we report that for a subset of OSNs, deleting G proteins or altering their levels of signalling does not affect axonal identity. Signalling-deficient ORs or surrogate receptors that are unable to couple to Gs/Golf still provide axons with distinct identities and the anterior–posterior targeting of axons does not correlate with the levels of cAMP produced by genetic modifications. In addition, we refine the …

Marijuana is one of the most commonly used illicit drugs around the world. It has gained attention as an alternative medicine to many different disorders. Though initially investigated in modern medicine for its analgesic and antiemetic properties, cannabis has been recently found to benefit numerous neurological disorders. Though there are over 100 different cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant, Δ9 – tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) has been shown to the most efficacious phytocannabinoid in neurological disorders. THC has been shown in numerous previous studies to be effective at treating spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury, as well as …

Tidal notches are a generally accepted sea level indicator that, when different from mean sea level, witness tectonic activity at or near coastlines. However, how to infer related information is controversial since tectonic uplift from a single seismic event is not likely to exceed several decimetres. High resolution laser scanning offers the availability of close-up views on exposures and to detect evidence for multiple sea level indicators in between major emergence. Statistically representative profiles along exposure were analysed in order to prove for already described tidal notches and to highlight similar shapes in consistent geometries along coastal cliffs of Perachora …

Sexual differentiation of malaria parasites into gametocytes in the vertebrate host and subsequent gamete fertilization in mosquitoes is essential for the spreading of the disease. The molecular processes orchestrating these transitions are far from fully understood. Here, we report the first transcriptome analysis of male and female Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes coupled with a comprehensive proteome analysis. In male gametocytes there is an enrichment of proteins involved in the formation of flagellated gametes; proteins involved in DNA replication, chromatin organization and axoneme formation. On the other hand, female gametocytes are enriched in proteins required for zygote formation and functions after fertilization; …

Caterpillars, Consciousness And The Origins Of Mind, Arthur S. Reber
Animal Sentience
A novel framework for the origins of consciousness and mind, the Cellular Basis of Consciousness (CBC), is presented. The model is based on a simple, perhaps radical axiom: subjectivity is an inherent feature of particular kinds of organic form. Experiential states, including those denoted as "mind" and "consciousness," are present in the most primitive species. The model has several conceptual and empirical virtues, among them: (a) it (re)solves the problem of how minds are created by brains ─ also known as the "Hard Problem" (Chalmers 1995) ─ by revealing that the apparent difficulty results from a category error, (b) it …

Novel Hormonal Combination Therapy For Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Ankita Thakkar
Open Access Dissertations
Anti-estrogen and anti-HER2 treatments have been among the first and most successful examples of targeted-therapy for breast cancers. However, around 10-20% of breast cancers lack estrogen receptor (ER) expression and HER2 amplification. Therefore, the treatment of ER-/HER2- Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC) remains a major challenge due to lack of a druggable target. Currently, TNBCs are treated with non-targeted conventional chemotherapy and although they respond initially, less than 30% patients survive beyond 5 years highlighting the need for novel therapeutic strategies for this disease. We previously discovered that approximately two-thirds of TNBCs express Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) and/or Androgen Receptor …

A Video-Tracking Method To Identify And Understand Circadian Patterns In Drosophila Grooming, Chiyuan Li
Open Access Dissertations
Grooming is nearly universal in terrestrial animals and is important for animals to maintain body surface condition. In insects, grooming is controlled by relatively simple nervous system, so the study of grooming may reveal basic principles of grooming. While recent progress is being made on understanding the mechanism of stimulated grooming control in Drosophila, the internal regulation of non-stimulated grooming remains unexplored. It is possible that the circadian clock plays an important role in the internal regulation of grooming. However, a key problem in the study of grooming’s circadian control is the difficulty of obtaining and interpreting long-term grooming data. …
