Parameterization Of Single-Scattering Albedo (Ssa) And Absorption Ångström Exponent (Aae) With Ec/Oc For Aerosol Emissions From Biomass Burning, Rudra P. Pokhrel, Nick L. Wagner, Justin M. Langridge, Daniel A. Lack, Thilina Jayarathne, Elizabeth A. Stone, Chelsea E. Stockwell, Robert J. Yokelson, Shane M. Murphy

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Single-scattering albedo (SSA) and absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) are two critical parameters in determining the impact of absorbing aerosol on the Earth's radiative balance. Aerosol emitted by biomass burning represent a significant fraction of absorbing aerosol globally, but it remains difficult to accurately predict SSA and AAE for biomass burning aerosol. Black carbon (BC), brown carbon (BrC), and non-absorbing coatings all make substantial contributions to the absorption coefficient of biomass burning aerosol. SSA and AAE cannot be directly predicted based on fuel type because they depend strongly on burn conditions. It has been suggested that SSA can be effectively parameterized …

Activation Of G Proteins By Gtp And The Mechanism Of Gα-Catalyzed Gtp Hydrolysis, Stephen R. Sprang Aug 2016

Activation Of G Proteins By Gtp And The Mechanism Of Gα-Catalyzed Gtp Hydrolysis, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

This review addresses the regulatory consequences of the binding of GTP to the alpha subunits (Gα) of heterotrimeric G proteins, the reaction mechanism of GTP hydrolysis catalyzed by Gα and the means by which GTPase activating proteins (GAPs) stimulate the GTPase activity of Gα. The high energy of GTP binding is used to restrain and stabilize the conformation of the Gα switch segments, particularly switch II, to afford stable complementary to the surfaces of Gα effectors, while excluding interaction with Gβγ, the regulatory binding partner of GDP-bound Gα. Upon GTP hydrolysis, the energy of these conformational restraints is dissipated and …

Blood-Tissue Barriers And Autoantibodies In Neurodegenerative Disease Pathogenesis: An Approach To Diagnostics And Disease Mechanism, Eric Luria Goldwaser Aug 2016

Blood-Tissue Barriers And Autoantibodies In Neurodegenerative Disease Pathogenesis: An Approach To Diagnostics And Disease Mechanism, Eric Luria Goldwaser

Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Brain homeostasis can be affected in a number of ways that lead to gross anatomical, cellular, and molecular disturbances giving rise to diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and related dementias. Unfortunately, the mechanistic pathoetiology of AD’s hallmark features of cerebral amyloid plaque buildup and neuronal death are still disputed. Using human brain AD sections, immunohistochemistry experiments revealed internalized surface proteins, co-localized to an expanded lysosomal compartment. Other stains for amyloid-β1-42 (Aβ42) and various immunoglobulin (Ig) species displayed them leaking out of the cerebrovasculature through a dysfunctional blood-brain barrier (BBB), binding to neurons in the vicinity, and localizing to intracellular vesicles …

Brief Report: Elastin Microfibril Interface 1 And Integrin-Linked Protein Kinase Are Novel Markers Of Islet Regenerative Function In Human Multipotent Mesenchymal Stromal Cells, Jessie R. Lavoie, Marybeth M. Creskey, Gauri Muradia, Gillian I. Bell, Stephen E. Sherman, Jun Gao, Duncan J. Stewart, Terry D. Cyr

Paediatrics Publications

Multipotent mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) transplantation is proposed as a novel therapy for treating diabetes by promoting the regeneration of damaged islets. The clinical promise of such treatments may be hampered by a high degree of donor-related variability in MSC function and a lack of standards for comparing potency. Here, we set out to identify markers of cultured human MSCs directly associated with islet regenerative function. Stromal cultures from nine separate bone marrow donors were demonstrated to have differing capacities to reduce hyperglycemia in the NOD/SCID streptozotocin-induced diabetic model. Regenerative (R) and non-regenerative (NR) MSC cultures were directly compared using …

Performing, Sensing, Being: Queer Identity In Everyday Life, Justin J. Rudnick Aug 2016

Performing, Sensing, Being: Queer Identity In Everyday Life, Justin J. Rudnick

Communication Studies Department Publications

Drawing from performance, affect, and queer theories, I explore how queer identity is storied, performed, and sensed in everyday life. I access performance and sensory ethnographic practices to examine how queer persons “do” their identities on a daily basis. I draw from data collected through ethnographic participation in a queer-friendly district of Columbus, Ohio in addition to in-depth interviews with fourteen self-identified queer persons I met through my fieldwork. My approach privileges observations and reflections of mundane moments of everyday life to position queer identity as a routine, repetitive, habitual, and otherwise performative practice. I question the emphasis on verbal …

Molecular Cloning And Expression Of Chitin Deacetylase 1 Gene From The Gills Of Penaeus Monodon (Black Tiger Shrimp), Katreena P. Sarmiento, Vivian A. Panes, Mudjekeewis D. Santos Aug 2016

Molecular Cloning And Expression Of Chitin Deacetylase 1 Gene From The Gills Of Penaeus Monodon (Black Tiger Shrimp), Katreena P. Sarmiento, Vivian A. Panes, Mudjekeewis D. Santos

Biology Faculty Publications

Chitin deacetylases have been identified and studied in several fungi and insects but not in crustaceans. These glycoproteins function in catalyzing the conversion of chitin to chitosan by the hydrolysis of N-acetamido bonds of chitin. Here, for the first time, the full length cDNA of chitin deacetylase (CDA) gene from crustaceans was fully cloned using a partial fragment obtained from a transcriptome database of the gills of black tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon that survived White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) infection employing Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends (RACE) PCR. The shrimp CDA, named PmCDA1, was further characterized by in silico …

Physiological Perturbation Reveals Modularity Of Eyespot Development In The Painted Lady Butterfly, Vanessa Cardui, Heidi Connahs, Turk Rhen, Rebecca Simmons Aug 2016

Physiological Perturbation Reveals Modularity Of Eyespot Development In The Painted Lady Butterfly, Vanessa Cardui, Heidi Connahs, Turk Rhen, Rebecca Simmons

Biology Faculty Publications

Butterfly eyespots are complex morphological traits that can vary in size, shape and color composition even on the same wing surface. Homology among eyespots suggests they share a common developmental basis and function as an integrated unit in response to selection. Despite strong evidence of genetic integration, eyespots can also exhibit modularity or plasticity, indicating an underlying flexibility in pattern development. The extent to which particular eyespots or eyespot color elements exhibit modularity or integration is poorly understood, particularly following exposure to novel conditions. We used perturbation experiments to explore phenotypic correlations among different eyespots and their color elements on …

Influence Of Resource Availability On Juniperus Virginiana Expansion In A Forest–Prairie Ecotone, A. C. Ganguli, D. M. Engle, P. M. Mayer, L. F. Salo

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Woody plant expansion into grasslands and savannas is a global concern. Rapid expansion of Juniperus virginiana, a tree native to North America, has profound ecological consequences. We used transplanted J. virginiana seedlings to investigate the role of resource availability on J. virginiana expansion following the removal of fire, the factor historically limiting range expansion of this fire-intolerant species. We evaluated J. virginiana seedling survival and seedling growth, two important phases in woody plant expansion, relative to two below ground resource factors, plant-available soil water (soil clay content, an index of plant-available soil water) and plant-available nitrogen (PAN), and an above …

The Role Of Organic Matter In The Fate And Transport Of Antibiotic Resistance, Metals, And Nutrients In The Karst Of Northwest Arkansas, Victor Lee Roland Ii Aug 2016

The Role Of Organic Matter In The Fate And Transport Of Antibiotic Resistance, Metals, And Nutrients In The Karst Of Northwest Arkansas, Victor Lee Roland Ii

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Organic matter (OM) in the environment acts as a nutrient, but may also act as a transport vector for harmful chemical compounds and bacteria. Acetate is a labile form of OM produced during fermentation in anaerobic lagoons used to store animal fecal-waste from concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Dry and liquid fertilizers from CAFOs pose a threat to groundwater by introducing excessive amounts of nutrients (e.g. OM, nitrate and ammonia), metals, and antibiotic compounds. In the epikarst of Northern Arkansas in the Buffalo River watershed additional input of labile dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from liquid CAFO waste-fertilizers was hypothesized to …

Optical Water Quality And Human Perceptions Of Rivers, Amie West Aug 2016

Optical Water Quality And Human Perceptions Of Rivers, Amie West

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Understanding water quality dynamics in recreational rivers is integral in shaping management strategies that maintain ecosystem health, perceived value and appeal, and regional economic significance in a changing environment. Optical water quality describes the behavior of light in water as governed by its physical and chemical composition, and is among the strongest influences on human perceptions of water quality. Ethnohydrology is the study of culturally constructed knowledge and understanding of water. This work is the culmination of an interdisciplinary approach to water resources research—integrating optical water quality and ethnohydrology methods to recognize the intersection between measured water quality and visible …

Agro-Climatic Change, Crop Production And Mitigation Strategies-Case Studies In Arkansas, Usa And Kenya, John Westley Magugu Aug 2016

Agro-Climatic Change, Crop Production And Mitigation Strategies-Case Studies In Arkansas, Usa And Kenya, John Westley Magugu

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Although climate change impacts vary geographically and temporally, studies at local levels are not readily available for stakeholders to better understand how their local communities would be affected and what remedial measures could be more effective in their local contexts. This dissertation has examined climate change and its impacts in two different local contexts: eastern Arkansas in the USA and Nyando in Kenya. The first part of this dissertation develops agro-meteorological indicators and examines the relationship between agro-meteorological indicators and crop yields in eastern Arkansas between 1960 and 2014. Results reveal that temperature based indicators were more strongly correlated to …

Eucalyptus In Kenya; Impacts On Environment And Society, Brandy M. Garrett Kluthe Aug 2016

Eucalyptus In Kenya; Impacts On Environment And Society, Brandy M. Garrett Kluthe

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Eucalyptus trees were introduced to Kenya a little over a century ago. European colonization along with the development of a railway system increased the demand for a fast growing wood source. The expansion of the tree across the fertile lands in Kenya raises concerns about the environmental impact on ecosystems where it has been introduced. These concerns include degraded soils, loss of water resources, co-introduction of ectomycorrhizal species, and allelopathy. Economic benefits to local landowners were also explored as well as the potential for large Eucalyptus woodlots to maximize the sequestration of CO₂ from the atmosphere. This was examined through …

Development Of A Fluidic Mixing Nozzle For 3d Bioprinting, Will Hoggatt Aug 2016

Development Of A Fluidic Mixing Nozzle For 3d Bioprinting, Will Hoggatt

Open Access Theses

3D bioprinting is a relatively new and very promising field that uses conventional 3D printing techniques and adapts them to print biological materials that are suited for use with cells. These bioprinters can be used to print cells encapsulated within biological "ink" (bio-ink) to create and customize complex three-dimensional tissues and organs. Our work has focused on developing a new bioprinter nozzle that addresses critical gaps with present-day bioprinters, namely, the lack of standardized, physiologically-relevant biomaterials, and their one nozzle per composition printing capacity. These shortcomings preclude printing a range of cellular and biomaterial compositions (including gradients of cells and …

The Dark Side Of Reactive Attitudes: From Persons To Compatibilism, Mallory A. Parker Aug 2016

The Dark Side Of Reactive Attitudes: From Persons To Compatibilism, Mallory A. Parker

Open Access Theses

This thesis contains two independent papers that both address the problems associated with the reactive attitudes. The first paper, presented in Chapter 2, discusses the negativities of the reactive attitudes in debates regarding skepticism about the moral notion of persons. The second paper, presented in Chapter 3, presents the negativities associated with the reactive attitudes in debates concerning compatibilism about moral responsibility. Neither chapter deals solely with presenting the negativities associated with the reactive attitudes. More than present these, both chapters undermine the non-realist or compatibilist philosophical arguments that attempt to save either the moral notion of persons (Chapter 2) …

Learning Styles And Their Impact On Sight Word Achievement: A Focus On Students With Disabilities, Margaret Tone

Education Masters

This action research paper focused on the question “how does instruction that includes a multitude of learning styles impact the achievement levels of students with special needs in regard to sight word instruction?” Data was collected through assessment, observation, recordings, and surveys. After analyzing the data, three themes were found: sight word recognition abilities, engagement levels, and disability classification in relation to preferred learning style. The implications of this study suggested that teachers should attempt to incorporate learning styles throughout instruction in order to increase engagement and motivation. The study implied that sight words taught in isolation are not as …

The Neck As A Potential Site For Vestibular Tactile Sensory Substitution, Kelly A. Morrow Aug 2016

The Neck As A Potential Site For Vestibular Tactile Sensory Substitution, Kelly A. Morrow

All NMU Master's Theses

In order to determine if the neck could be used a site for vestibular-to-tactile sensory substitution, two experiments were performed to take an in-depth look of the tactile sensitivity of the neck and how it responds to vibrotactile stimuli. Experiment 1 explored how participants respond to a vibrotactile neck device, the Arraysense, and how well this device conveys information about a single contact point on the participant’s skin. Results showed that determining the exact point of stimulation is difficult for participants, but they can identify the area of stimulation with ease. Additionally, our results showed that the front of the …

This paper presents the findings of an extensive sediment sampling, testing and analysis programme, including for suspended and bed sediments and sediment loadings. …

The Effect Of R382w Mutation On Citrus Paradisi Flavonol Specific 3-O-Glucosyltransferase, Kathleen King Aug 2016

The Effect Of R382w Mutation On Citrus Paradisi Flavonol Specific 3-O-Glucosyltransferase, Kathleen King

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Flavonoids are a class of plant metabolites with C6-C3-C6 structure responsible for many biological functions, including coloration and defense. Citrus paradisi, grapefruit, contains a wide variety of flavonoids which are grouped by the extent of modification, examples of which are flavonols, flavones, and flavanones. A major modification is the addition of glucose by glucosyltransferases (GTs) to stabilize the structure and provide ease of transport. Glucosyltransferases can be highly substrate and regiospecific. With Cp3OGT, glucose is added at the 3-hydroxy position. This 3GT only accepts flavonols as its substrate; however, a Vitis vinifera (grape) 3-GT can accept both flavonols and …

Fish Communities Associated With Cold-Water Corals Vary With Depth And Substratum Type, Rosanna Milligan, Gemma Spence, J. Murray Roberts, David M. Bailey Aug 2016

Fish Communities Associated With Cold-Water Corals Vary With Depth And Substratum Type, Rosanna Milligan, Gemma Spence, J. Murray Roberts, David M. Bailey

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

Understanding the processes that drive the distribution patterns of organisms and the scales over which these processes operate are vital when considering the effective management of species with high commercial or conservation value. In the deep sea, the importance of scleractinian cold-water corals (CWCs) to fish has been the focus of several studies but their role remains unclear. We propose this may be due to the confounding effects of multiple drivers operating over multiple spatial scales. The aims of this study were to investigate the role of CWCs in shaping fish community structure and individual species-habitat associations across four spatial …

Utility Of The Living (Well Through) Intergenerational Fitness And Exercise Program As A County-Delivered Extension Program, Ashleigh J. Sowle, Sarah L. Francis, Jennifer A. Margrett, Warren D. Franke Aug 2016

Utility Of The Living (Well Through) Intergenerational Fitness And Exercise Program As A County-Delivered Extension Program, Ashleigh J. Sowle, Sarah L. Francis, Jennifer A. Margrett, Warren D. Franke

Journal of Extension

Rural-residing older adults are not participating in regular physical activity. Extension is in an excellent position to fill this programming void through transdisciplinary programming such as the Living (well through) Intergenerational Fitness and Exercise (LIFE) program. Qualitative evaluation was conducted to assess the LIFE program's utility as an Extension-delivered program. Nearly all LIFE program managers were satisfied with the program and were likely to recommend it to others. Best liked program features and attributes were the ready-to-use curriculum, corresponding training, and intergenerational and rural focuses. These results suggest that the LIFE program is viewed as appropriate for delivery by Extension.
