Spatial Correlation Between Framework Geology And Shoreline Morphology In Grand Bay, Mississippi, Asa J. Mullennex Aug 2016

Spatial Correlation Between Framework Geology And Shoreline Morphology In Grand Bay, Mississippi, Asa J. Mullennex

Theses and Dissertations

The Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (GBNERR) adjoins two costal embayments in the eastern Mississippi Sound, Grand Bay and Point Aux Chenes Bay, which encompass a late Pleistocene/ Holocene delta of the Pascagoula-Escatawpa fluvial system. Historical maps and aerial imagery indicate that the GBNERR shoreline has experienced long-term retreat at spatially variable rates. The research presented here investigates the relationship between the coastal geomorphological evolution of GBNERR and the underlying geological framework. Coastal morphology and stratigraphy were characterized by analyzing 85 km of chirp sonar sub-bottom seismic profiles and 45 sediment cores. Shoreline retreat rates were determined through geospatial …

Precipitation Of Aragonite Under Anoxic Conditions: An Experimental Study, Jonney Mitchell Aug 2016

Precipitation Of Aragonite Under Anoxic Conditions: An Experimental Study, Jonney Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Calcium carbonate minerals (CaCO3) are important for our understanding of past marine conditions as well as tools for constructing paleoclimate. However, very little experimental work has been done to determine the influence of oxygen depletion on the geochemistry of CaCO3. To determine how oxygen depletion affects elemental incorporation and partitioning, aragonite was grown inorganically in artificial seawater at pressures of 1 atm and 5 bars (0.1%CH4-N2 mixture). Solution of Na2CO3 was used to induce aragonite precipitation. N2 was bubbled through solution in order to minimize oxygen content and iron powder was used to trap remaining O2. Experimental products (aragonite and …

Relative Rate Of Transposable Element Insertions On The X Chromosome And Autosomes, Christopher D. Savell Aug 2016

Relative Rate Of Transposable Element Insertions On The X Chromosome And Autosomes, Christopher D. Savell

Theses and Dissertations

Sex chromosomes and autosomes often differ in their relative rates of evolution, with sex chromosomes generally accumulating changes more rapidly (faster-X evolution). Transposable elements (TEs) make up a significant portion of eukaryotic genomes and are some of the most rapidly evolving genetic elements. We compared relative rates of insertion on the X and autosomes for 78 families found in Drosophila melanogaster. The average X/A ratio for these TE families was 1.11, similar to the mean dS X/A ratio, indicating no male-bias in mutation rate or TE insertion. The major mode of the distribution was ~0.8, indicating stronger purifying selection on …

Rhodium Catalyzed Coupling Of In Situ Generated Alpha-Lactams With Indoles And Synthesis And Surface Immobilization Of Bis-Corannulene Molecular Receptors, K G Upul Ranjan Kumarasinghe

Theses and Dissertations

The first section of this dissertation (Chapter I-III) describes the development of new methodologies for the rhodium catalyzed C-N bond formation between sp3 hybridized carbon atom of phenyl substituted alpha-lactams and the nitrogen atom of indole derivatives. Phenyl substituted alpha-lactams generated in situ from the corresponding alpha-bromoamides reacted with indoles in the presence of rhodium catalyst to afford the ring opening products of alpha-lactams. The scope of this methodology was extended to various types of indole derivatives including electron donating and withdrawing substituents. Furthermore, a series of functionalized phenyl substituted alpha-lactams generated in situ reacted with indole to assess the …

Impact Of Diagnostic Versus Emotional Disturbance Label On Preservice Teacher Expectations Of Student Academic, Behavior, And Social Outcomes, Amity M. Lancaster

Theses and Dissertations

The current study examined preservice teachers’ expectations for student academic, behavior, and social, outcomes using the Prognostic Outlook Scale (Thelen, Burns, & Christiansen, 2003). A 2 x 2 x 2 MANOVA analysis was used to determine differences between label specificity (i.e., Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition diagnostic label versus the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act [IDEA] Emotional Disturbance [ED]) label, behavioral presentation (i.e., internalizing versus externalizing) and symptom severity (i.e., mild versus severe). The goal was to identify labels that elicit higher expectations for students with ED in order to inform the labeling practices within …

Influence Of Velocity On Weimaraner Trotting Mechanics, Leif Carlisle Aug 2016

Influence Of Velocity On Weimaraner Trotting Mechanics, Leif Carlisle

Theses and Dissertations

While Weimaraner size may assist in the performing of tasks of a sporting dog, it also makes the breed more susceptible to hip dysplasia. However, this breed has a lower rate of dysplasia. This may be due to selected gait velocity and mechanics specific to the breed, but gait analysis of Weimaraners is lacking. Study objectives were to define normal trotting mechanics and to determine the influence of velocity on gait. Dogs were trotted at a slow and fast trot and at both velocities. The trot had a diagonal footfall sequence with a 2-beat rhythm alternating between diagonal bipedal support …

Addressing Questions Of Prehistoric Occupation Seasonality At Freshwater Mussel Shell Ring Sites In The Mississippi Delta: Applications In Carbonate Geochemistry And Zooarchaeology, Joseph Alan Mitchell Aug 2016

Addressing Questions Of Prehistoric Occupation Seasonality At Freshwater Mussel Shell Ring Sites In The Mississippi Delta: Applications In Carbonate Geochemistry And Zooarchaeology, Joseph Alan Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Seasonality estimates based on archaeological shellfish remains have been an important component of settlement pattern reconstruction. Investigations of this nature allow researchers to place prehistoric people on the landscape at points in space at different times of the year. Many of the previous seasonality studies, however, have focused on marine species from coastal sites, with little attention given to freshwater locales, especially ones in the Mississippi Delta. To address that disparity, this study examines freshwater mussel “season of capture” via analysis of stable oxygen isotope ratios in specimens recovered from two Late Woodland sites located along the Yazoo River, Mississippi. …

Adolescent Delinquency And Family Processes Among Single Parent Families, Sunmi Seo Aug 2016

Adolescent Delinquency And Family Processes Among Single Parent Families, Sunmi Seo

Theses and Dissertations

This study used secondary data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) to examine the relationship between adolescent delinquency and family processes (i.e., relationship to residential parents and autonomy), among single-mother and singleather families. The findings indicate that adolescents in single-mother families reported a higher quality relationship to residential parents than those living with singleathers. Additionally, the relationship to residential parents variable was modestly predictive of adolescent delinquency. However, the results indicate there is no statistically significant difference between rates of adolescent delinquency among single-mother and singleather families. Research and practical implications of this study …

The Defense Response Of Glycine Max To Its Major Parasitic Nematode Pathogen Heterodera Glycines, Shankar R. Pant

Theses and Dissertations

Heterodera glycines, soybean cyst nematode (SCN) causes more than one billion dollars soyben production loss in the U.S. annually. SCN is an obligate parasite of specialized feeding cells within the host root known as syncytium. The SCN resistance genes and signaling pathways in soybean have not been fully characterized. Gene expression analysis in syncytium from compatible and incompatible interactions identified candidate genes that might involve conferring resistance to SCN. This dissertation aimed to investigate the biological functions of the candidate resistance genes to confirm the roles of these genes in resistance to SCN. The study demonstrated a role of syntaxin …

The Ecological Significance Of Phyllosphere Leaf Traits On Throughfall Hydrology, Biogeochemistry, And Leaf Litter Quality Among Oak (Quercus Spp.) Species In The Southeastern United States, Katy Elizabeth Limpert

Theses and Dissertations

Oaks (Quercus spp.) are a dominant genus in forests across the United States that have been declining due to fire suppression and forest mesophication. The reduction of these species may alter forest hydrologic and biogeochemical cycling. Canopy-derived nutrients and interspecific temporal distribution of leaves were quantified under oak and hickory (Carya spp.) species in Mississippi during 2014-2016. Throughfall quantity and chemistry were measured during every storm event under oak and hickory species. Interspecific leaf litter was collected weekly to quantify the timing of leaf fall and leaf litter nutrient content. Throughfall volume and solute fluxes were impacted by seasonality. Mg2+ …

The Evolution Of Wing Pattern In Micropterigidae (Insecta: Lepidoptera), Sandra Rose Schachat Aug 2016

The Evolution Of Wing Pattern In Micropterigidae (Insecta: Lepidoptera), Sandra Rose Schachat

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the biological importance of lepidopteran wing patterns, homologies between pattern elements in different lineages are still not understood. Though plesiomorphic wing veins influence color patterning even when not expressed in the adult wing, most studies of wing pattern evolution have focused on derived taxa with reduced venation. Here I address this gap with an examination of Micropterigidae, a very early-diverged family in which all known plesiomorphic lepidopteran veins are expressed in the adult wing. Differences between the coloration of transverse bands in Micropterix and Sabatinca suggest that homologies exist between the contrast boundaries that divide wing pattern elements. Because …

Methodology To Measure And Compare The Efficiency Of Radiant Heaters Used In Poultry Brooding, John Emerson Linhoss Aug 2016

Methodology To Measure And Compare The Efficiency Of Radiant Heaters Used In Poultry Brooding, John Emerson Linhoss

Theses and Dissertations

During the first seven to ten days of life chicks are unable to maintain homeothermy, thus providing supplemental heat is critical to their livability and performance. Radiant heaters are the preferred method of providing heat during brooding because they provide a range of thermal comfort options for chicks. Infrared thermography is often used to assess the heat distribution created at the litter surface by radiant heaters. The resulting images provide a good qualitative assessment of heat distribution but do not provide any quantifiable metrics through which to compare the radiant output of heaters. Data acquisition systems were developed to measure …

Methodology To Predict Daily Groundwater Levels By The Implementation Of Machine Learning And Crop Models, Sandra Milena Guzman Gutierrez Aug 2016

Methodology To Predict Daily Groundwater Levels By The Implementation Of Machine Learning And Crop Models, Sandra Milena Guzman Gutierrez

Theses and Dissertations

The continuous decline of groundwater levels caused by variations in climatic conditions and crop water demands is an increased concern for the agricultural community. It is necessary to understand the factors that control these changes in groundwater levels so that we can better address declines and develop improved conservation practices that will lead to a more sustainable use of water. In this study, two machine learning techniques namely support vector regression (SVR) and the nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) neural network were implemented to predict daily groundwater levels in a well located in the Mississippi Delta Region (MDR). Results …

The Numerical Solutions Of Fractional Differential Equations With Fractional Taylor Vector, Vidhya Krishnasamysaraswathy Aug 2016

The Numerical Solutions Of Fractional Differential Equations With Fractional Taylor Vector, Vidhya Krishnasamysaraswathy

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, a new numerical method for solving fractional calculus problems is presented. The method is based upon the fractional Taylor vector approximations. The operational matrix of the fractional integration for the fractional Taylor vector is introduced. This matrix is then utilized to reduce the solution of the fractional calculus problems to the solution of a system of algebraic equations. This method is used to solve fractional differential equations, Bagley-Torvik equations, fractional integro-differential equations, and fractional duffing problems. Illustrative examples are included to demonstrate the validity and applicability of this technique.

The Reconstruction And Analysis Of Oral Microbiome Composition Using Dental Calculus From The Mississippi State Asylum (1855-1935), Jackson, Ms, Jonathan Robert Belanich

Theses and Dissertations

The human oral microbiome is the total amount of microbial biodiversity present in the oral cavity and, given its relevance to human health and disease, has recently become a foci for study. By analyzing dental calculus, and sequencing the bacterial DNA, it is possible to reconstruct and examine the oral microbiomes of past individuals. In this study, dental calculus was sampled from (N=4) skeletons recovered from the cemetery of the mid 19th- 20th, century Mississippi State Asylum in Jackson, MS. Bacterial DNA isolation and shotgun sequencing were successful, with 16S analyses yielding an average of 96 identified species. All samples …

The Role Of Auxin In Defense Response To Aspergillus Flavus In Zea Mays L, Seval Ozkan Aug 2016

The Role Of Auxin In Defense Response To Aspergillus Flavus In Zea Mays L, Seval Ozkan

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding the role of phytohormone auxin in defense responses is one of the vital tools for plant breeders to develop maize germplasm lines that exhibit high resistance to Aspergillus flavus and subsequent aflatoxin accumulation. Besides its critical role in different developmental processes throughout the life cycle of plants, auxin is also involved in the network of plant-pathogen interaction as demonstrated in previous studies. However, the actual mechanism for the auxin signaling pathway leading to resistance is unknown. Therefore, the critical gap in the knowledge base is a lack of understanding of the role of auxin signaling in pathogen resistance in …

The Thermodynamics Of Ligand Association And Molecular Recognition Of Cationic And Metallated Porphyrins And Ruthenium Complexes With Model Dna Constructs, Jesse I. Dupont

Theses and Dissertations

Molecular recognition, particularly as it applies to strong binding interactions between complementary ligand/receptor molecules in solution, is important in such varied areas as molecular biology, pharmacology, synthetic chemistry, and chemical detection. Strong binding is the additive result of a number of specific, weak, non-covalent interactions occurring between complementary molecules. This dissertation reports on the energetics of forming complexes between small molecules and model DNA constructs. Ligands included cationic and metallated cationic porphyrins and polyheterocyclic ruthenium compounds. DNA receptors included double stranded B-DNAs (hairpin and short linear sequences) as well G-quadruplex DNAs. Thermodynamic data were collected using isothermal titration calorimetry, circular …

Thermal Variation And The Built Environment Of Jackson, Mississippi, Peter Jay Crank Aug 2016

Thermal Variation And The Built Environment Of Jackson, Mississippi, Peter Jay Crank

Theses and Dissertations

Urbanization and a changing climate have encouraged more discussion as to how the urban heat island affects humans and society. This research examines three temperature variables (air temperature, apparent temperature, and surface skin temperature) across the Jackson, Mississippi metropolitan area to determine if intra-city thermal variability in select neighborhoods and business districts is connected to the built environment of each location. Using hand-held observation equipment, official weather observations from nearby airports, and land cover data from the United States Geological Survey, this research suggests that the built environment is contributing to the thermal variability around the city; however, the fine …

Who Speaks For The Enslaved? Authorship And Reclamation In Octavia Butler's Kindred, Antoinette Daineyell Hayden Aug 2016

Who Speaks For The Enslaved? Authorship And Reclamation In Octavia Butler's Kindred, Antoinette Daineyell Hayden

Theses and Dissertations

Octavia Butler’s Kindred is often looked at as a historical science fiction novel. While there are critics who have discussed the slave narrative aspects of the novel, the way Butler tackles authorship and what it means to re-write history has been overlooked. By examining the way Butler uses authorship to question authorial authority, one can see the way Butler uses her protagonist to revise history and reclaim historical figures. This process of reclamation and revision enables Butler to examine the historical gaps that have been created and the way enslaved blacks have been caricatured and further dehumanized. Through her protagonist, …

Maintaining Soil Physical Property Integrity In Turfgrass Management Systems, Jordan Michael Craft Aug 2016

Maintaining Soil Physical Property Integrity In Turfgrass Management Systems, Jordan Michael Craft

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional aerification programs can cause substantial damage to the playing surface resulting in prolonged recovery. A growing trend in the industry involves using aerification techniques that cause minimum surface disruption; however, despite growing interest in new and alternative aerification technology, there is a lack of information in the literature comparing new or alternative technology with traditional methods on warm season grasses. Therefore, the objective of this research was to determine the best combination of new dry-injection (DI) cultivation technology with modified traditional aerification programs to achieve minimal surface disruption without a compromise in soil physical properties. Research was conducted at …

Gold Nanostars For Efficient In Vitro And In Vivo Real-Time Sers Detection And Drug Delivery Via Plasmonic-Tunable Raman/Ftir Imaging, Furong Tian, Joao Conde, Chenchen Bao, Yunsheng Chen, James Curtin, Daxiang Cui

Articles

The application of plasmonic-enhanced Raman imaging of cancer cells and drug delivery is gaining momentum. Here, we propose a new theranostic strategy based on an efficient plasmonic-tunable Raman/Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy imaging, to simultaneously evaluate the anticancer drug scattering cellular imaging and the Raman scattering molecular vibration signals in living cells. This technique allows to monitoring the drug release throughout the cell cycle and in vivo biodistribution and biocompatibility with low dose drug therapy (200 µg/mL) and low toxicity effect. This system can directly track in real-time the delivery and release of an anticancer drug (mitoxantrone, MTX) from gold …

Universal Modes Of Awareness? A “Pre-Reflective” Premise, Uta M. Jürgens Aug 2016

Universal Modes Of Awareness? A “Pre-Reflective” Premise, Uta M. Jürgens

Animal Sentience

Mark Rowlands holds that creatures endowed with pre-reflective awareness may qualify as persons: In pre-reflective awareness, the self and the unity of mental life are implicit in the stream of experience. Rowlands generalizes from an introspective analysis of pre-reflective consciousness in humans to pre-reflective awareness in general. I describe three examples of empirical findings that corroborate the assumption that animal minds have some of the same basic modes of pre-reflective awareness as human minds.

Keeping Kids First: Trial Court Discretion And The Best Interest Of The Child In Light V. D'Amato, Stanley W. Abraham Aug 2016

Keeping Kids First: Trial Court Discretion And The Best Interest Of The Child In Light V. D'Amato, Stanley W. Abraham

Maine Law Review

Family dissolution is a difficult ordeal for everyone involved: the parties, their lawyers, and the court. After all, these are not parties engaged in an arm’s length dealing, or strangers involved in an accident. On the contrary, the parties are generally intimately involved and often share property and children. Spouses frequently struggle to agree on even the most trivial of property divisions, with the ownership of a simple rocking chair a potential issue for appeal. As contentious as such property division disputes can be, disputes between divorcing parents regarding the allocation of parental rights and responsibilities are particularly bitter. Most …

Functional Analysis Of Human And Mouse Splenic B Cells, Justin Charles Boucher Aug 2016

Functional Analysis Of Human And Mouse Splenic B Cells, Justin Charles Boucher

Open Access Dissertations

T-cell independent (TI) antibodies may be critical in closing the gap between early innate and late adaptive immune responses against bacterial pathogens. In the mouse, innate marginal zone (MZ) B cells rapidly produce these antibodies. In humans, the characterization of a MZ B cell equivalent to that of mice is controversial because of phenotypic differences between the two species. Studies suggest that TLR activation upregulate BAFF receptors, TACI and BR3 in mouse splenic B. Upregulation of BAFF receptors is important because the ligands for these receptors, BAFF and APRIL, are critical in the regulation of humoral immune responses and immunoglobulin …

Interactions Of Nucleic Acid Bases With Temozolomide. Stacked, Perpendicular, And Coplanar Heterodimers, Okuma Emile Kasende, Steve Scheiner Aug 2016

Interactions Of Nucleic Acid Bases With Temozolomide. Stacked, Perpendicular, And Coplanar Heterodimers, Okuma Emile Kasende, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Temozolomide (TMZ) was paired with each of the five nucleic acid bases, and the potential energy surface searched for all minima, in the context of dispersion-corrected density functional theory and MP2 methods. Three types of arrangements were observed, with competitive stabilities. Coplanar H-bonding structures, reminiscent of Watson–Crick base pairs were typically the lowest in energy, albeit by a small amount. Also very stable were perpendicular arrangements that included one or more H-bonds. The two monomers were stacked approximately parallel to one another in the third category, some of which contained weak and distorted H-bonds. Dispersion was found to be a …

Incorporating Exponential Functions Into An Optimal Control Model For A Chronic Wound, Peter Agaba Aug 2016

Incorporating Exponential Functions Into An Optimal Control Model For A Chronic Wound, Peter Agaba

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

A chronic wound is a wound that does not heal in an orderly manner and on time. In this project, we simulate different ways of minimizing the time of therapy using exponential functions. The analysis in this research project focuses on treating chronic wounds using both mathematical and biological models. These models primarily focus on the amount of oxygen supplied to the wound using both hyperbaric and topical oxygen therapies. This amount should be optimal since too much oxygen is toxic to the body, and can potentially lead to death. The goal is to minimize the time spent in therapies …

Parental Sensitivity Predicted By Parent Personality And Infant Temperament, Lauren Bailes Aug 2016

Parental Sensitivity Predicted By Parent Personality And Infant Temperament, Lauren Bailes

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The determinants of parenting model (Belsky, 1984) suggests that there are intrinsic and extrinsic factors that contribute to parenting. Previous research has suggested that aspects of parent personality, such as neuroticism and extraversion, were predictive of parenting, but this research has provided conflicting results on the effect personality has on parenting. Furthermore, infant temperament has also found to be influential on parenting, but has also generated mixed results concerning how negative reactivity influences parenting. In regard to both variables, research on fathers is severely lacking. This study examined the direct effects of parent personality on parenting through the BIS/BAS model. …

Tumor-Associated Stromal Cells As Key Contributors To The Tumor Microenvironment., Karen M. Bussard, Lysette Mutkus, Kristina Stumpf, Candelaria Gomez-Manzano, Frank C. Marini Aug 2016

Tumor-Associated Stromal Cells As Key Contributors To The Tumor Microenvironment., Karen M. Bussard, Lysette Mutkus, Kristina Stumpf, Candelaria Gomez-Manzano, Frank C. Marini

Department of Cancer Biology Faculty Papers

The tumor microenvironment is a heterogeneous population of cells consisting of the tumor bulk plus supporting cells. It is becoming increasingly evident that these supporting cells are recruited by cancer cells from nearby endogenous host stroma and promote events such as tumor angiogenesis, proliferation, invasion, and metastasis, as well as mediate mechanisms of therapeutic resistance. In addition, recruited stromal cells range in type and include vascular endothelial cells, pericytes, adipocytes, fibroblasts, and bone-marrow mesenchymal stromal cells. During normal wound healing and inflammatory processes, local stromal cells change their phenotype to become that of reactive stroma. Under certain conditions, however, tumor …
