Measurement Invariance Of The Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (Ede-Q) In A College Sample Of Non-Hispanic White And Hispanic Women, Kelsey Serier
Psychology ETDs
Objective: Rates of body dissatisfaction and eating disorders have increased in racial and ethnic minority groups, and yet the validity of various commonly-used eating disorder instruments has not been established in these populations. The primary goal of this study was to test the measurement invariance of one such measure, the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q), across a non-clinical sample of non-Hispanic white and Hispanic undergraduate women. Secondary goals of this study were to determine the factor structure of the EDE-Q in this sample, provide information on EDE-Q norms in a non-clinical sample of Hispanic undergraduate women, and examine the effect …

Assessing Drought-Induced Change In A Pi\Xd1on-Juniper Woodland With Landsat: A Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis Approach, William Brewer
Geography ETDs
Piñon-juniper communities exist on mid-elevation mountain ranges throughout the southwestern United States. Drought adapted, these species have lived with climatic stochasticity since the end of the Pleistocene. However, increasing temperatures and drought within the last two decades have stressed this community beyond its adaptive limits. With increased drought-induced stress, piñon show greater vulnerability to die-off than juniper. Widespread piñon die-off occurred during 2002-2004 from extreme drought in northern New Mexico with minimal juniper die-off. This study quantified the differential piñon and juniper mortality during the 2010-2013 drought at a site in central New Mexico by performing multiple endmember spectral mixture …

"Crimes Against The Order Of The Family, Public Morality, And Decency": Sexual Violence And Jurisprudence In Coahuila, Mexico, 1871-1931, Sandra Elizabeth Lara
History ETDs
This study focuses on how institutions, the law, and litigants of sexual crimes interpreted estupro (seduction/deflowering), rape, and incest crimes in the northeastern Mexican state of Coahuila during 1871-1931. The dissertation explores the diverse ways that liberal legislation proved disadvantageous to women and especially young girls. By taking a regional approach, I examine the role that Coahuila's courtroom practices and laws had on the adjudication of sexual crimes. I argue that despite the liberal lawmakers' intents to modernize criminal law, women and children were not protected from sexual predators. During the study's period, two pieces of national legislation that governed …

Resting-State Connectivity Dynamics In The Human Brain Using High-Speed Fmri, Kishore Vakamudi
Resting-State Connectivity Dynamics In The Human Brain Using High-Speed Fmri, Kishore Vakamudi
Physics & Astronomy ETDs
Resting-state fMRI using seed-based connectivity analysis (SCA) typically involves regression of the confounding signals resulting from movement and physiological noise sources. This not only adds additional complexity to the analysis but may also introduce possible regression bias. We recently introduced a computationally efficient real-time SCA approach without confound regression, which employs sliding-window correlation analysis with running mean and standard deviation (meta-statistics). The present study characterizes the confound tolerance of this windowed seed-based connectivity analysis (wSCA), which combines efficient decorrelation of confounding signal events with high-pass filter characteristics that reduce sensitivity to drifts. The confound suppression and the strength of resting-state …
"The Bellows / Of Experience": The Modernist Love Poem And Its Legacy, Stephanie Spong
"The Bellows / Of Experience": The Modernist Love Poem And Its Legacy, Stephanie Spong
English Language and Literature ETDs
The vein of experimental love poetry examined in this project takes advantage of the friction generated by charging both form and content with innovation. The troubled relationship between sex and power is knit directly into the long and dynamic history of love poetry, but there has yet to be a published monograph on the modernist love poem and its implications for literary history. This dissertation fills a major gap in scholarship and speaks to the broader social concerns addressed by public discourse on sex, sexuality, and eros. The body of modernist love poetry includes allusions to traditional love poetry—a tradition …

In re Baby: Blessing or Problem Child? discusses the relevant surrogacy arrangement terminology and outlines key statutes and cases detailing the nationwide legal maze of surrogacy. This note also discusses the facts giving rise to Baby, the sources of Tennessee law examined, and the Court’s analysis and holdings in Baby. Finally, Mr. Baggett examines Louisiana’s legislative efforts as a case study exhibiting the various difficulties legislatures may experience when addressing surrogacy issues.
Subjective Experience In Insects: Definitions And Other Difficulties, Shelley Adamo
Subjective Experience In Insects: Definitions And Other Difficulties, Shelley Adamo
Animal Sentience
Whether insects have the potential for subjective experiences depends on the definition of subjective experience. The definition used by Klein & Barron (2016) is an unusually liberal one and could be used to argue that some modern robots have subjective experiences. From an evolutionary perspective, the additional neurons needed to produce subjective experiences will be proportionately more expensive for insects than for mammals because of the small size of the insect brain. This greater cost could weaken selection for such traits. Minimally, it may be premature to assume that small neuronal number is unimportant in determining the capacity for consciousness.

Perceptions Of Safety Within Residence Halls At A Midwestern College Campus, Alissa R. Shape, Ellen Hammerschmidt, Jade Anderson, Stephanie Feldman
Journal of Undergraduate Research at Minnesota State University, Mankato
Sexual violence is a widespread issue in American society. Though sexual violence takes many forms, the topic of campus sexual violence is especially pressing as it has occupied a fair amount of controversy in American media. The experience of sexual violence for college students is often traumatic as they navigate through the administrative systems and criminal justice systems of their respective communities. From a feminist perspective, students that become victims of campus sexual violence are often met with institutional resistance and inadequacies. The purpose of this study was to assess college students’ feelings of safety in residence halls. This research …

Gender In 17th Century Southern New England, Megan K. Willison
Master's Theses
This thesis, written in the form of two broadly related articles, aims to address questions related to topics of gender, identity, cultural change and continuity, and the materiality of social institutions. Each article investigates how artifacts, as physical objects unintentionally or purposefully discarded, represent and reflect human behavior, societal ideologies, and cultural infrastructures. Using primary sources, archaeological evidence, and linguistic data, each article proposes that certain artifact classes are representative of larger societal ideals and cultural mores, such as gender systems and ways of defining one's gender identity. The first article studies these topics through the analysis of funerary remains …

Osmoregulatory Physiology And Its Evolution In The Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus), Jeffrey N. Divino
Doctoral Dissertations
Maintaining ion balance in environments of changing salinity is one of the greatest physiological challenges facing aquatic organisms and by comparing populations inhabiting different salinity regimes, we can learn how physiological plasticity evolves in response to local osmotic stress. I characterized the evolution of osmoregulatory responses in representative marine, anadromous, and freshwater (FW) populations of Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) by comparing survival and physiological measures in F1-generation fish following salinity challenge. Juveniles from a population landlocked for ~10,000 years displayed ontogenetically-delayed seawater (SW) tolerance, a lower maximum salinity threshold, and did not upregulate the Na+ …
Spatially-Dependent Biotic And Abiotic Factors Drive Survivorship And Physical Structure Of Green Roof Vegetation, Jason Aloisio
Spatially-Dependent Biotic And Abiotic Factors Drive Survivorship And Physical Structure Of Green Roof Vegetation, Jason Aloisio
Student Publications
Plant survivorship depends on biotic and abiotic factors that vary at local and regional scales. This survivorship, in turn, has cascading effects on community composition and the physical structure of vegetation. Survivorship of native plant species is variable among populations planted in environmentally stressful habitats like urban roofs, but the degree to which factors at different spatial scales affect survivorship in urban systems is not well understood. We evaluated the effects of biotic and abiotic factors on survivorship, composition and physical structure of two native perennial species assemblages, one characterized by a mixture of C4 grasses and forbs (Hempstead …

Creating large conservation zones in remote areas, with less intense stakeholder overlap and limited environmental information, requires periodic review to ensure zonation mitigates primary threats and fill gaps in representation, while achieving conservation targets. Follow-up reviews can utilise improved methods and data, potentially identifying new planning options yielding a desirable balance between stakeholder interests. This research explored a marine zoning system in north-west Australia–a biodiverse area with poorly documented biota. Although remote, it is economically significant (i.e. petroleum extraction and fishing). Stakeholder engagement was used to source the best available biodiversity and socio-economic data and advanced spatial analyses produced 765 …
Taking Swarms To The Field: Decentralized Algorithms For Underwater Swarms, Sherif Ahmed Tolba
Taking Swarms To The Field: Decentralized Algorithms For Underwater Swarms, Sherif Ahmed Tolba
Doctoral Dissertations
Modern ocean exploration and sensing approaches have been mainly based on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), and/or static Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs) deployments. Individual AUVs and ROVs represent a single point of failure in addition to being bulky and expensive as vehicles are usually full-featured and sophisticated. UASNs have traditionally been statically deployed. This limits their use to original deployment locations and renders them unsuitable for search tasks. Swarm Robotics (SR) are a natural, better alternative. Swarms possess superior features over a sophisticated AUV; they are smaller, cheaper, robust, reliable, and scalable by design and definition. …

Quantifying Peat Carbon Accumulation In Alaska Using A Process-Based Biogeochemistry Model, Sirui Wang, Qianlai Zhuang, Zicheng Yu, Scott Bridgham, Jason K. Keller
Education Faculty Articles and Research
This study uses an integrated modeling framework that couples the dynamics of hydrology, soil thermal regime, and ecosystem carbon and nitrogen to quantify the long-term peat carbon accumulation in Alaska during the Holocene. Modeled hydrology, soil thermal regime, carbon pools and fluxes, and methane emissions are evaluated using observation data at several peatland sites in Minnesota, Alaska, and Canada. The model is then applied for a 10,000 year (15 ka to 5 ka; 1 ka = 1000 cal years before present) simulation at four peatland sites. We find that model simulations match the observed carbon accumulation rates at fen sites …

The shifting course of the Bear River has influenced the hydrologic balance of the Bonneville basin through time, including the magnitude of Lake Bonneville. This was first recognized by G.K. Gilbert and addressed in the early work of Robert Bright, who focused on the southeastern Idaho region of Gem Valley and Oneida Narrows. In this chapter, we summarize and evaluate existing knowledge from this region, present updated and new chronostratigraphic evidence for the Bear River's drainage history, and discuss implications for the Bonneville record as well as future research needs.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a globally emerging mosquito-transmitted flavivirus that can cause severe fetal abnormalities, including microcephaly. As such, highly sensitive, specific, and cost-effective diagnostic methods are urgently needed. Here, we report a novel electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL)-based immunoassay for ultrasensitive and specific detection of ZIKV in human biological fluids. We loaded polystyrene beads (PSB) with a large number of ECL labels and conjugated them with anti-ZIKV monoclonal antibodies to generate anti-ZIKV-PSBs. These anti-ZIKV-PSBs efficiently captured ZIKV in solution forming ZIKV-anti-ZIKV-PSB complexes, which were subjected to measurement of ECL intensity after further magnetic beads separation. Our results show that the anti-ZIKV-PSBs …

Improved Compressive Sensing Of Natural Scenes Using Localized Random Sampling, Victor J. Barranca, G. Kovačič, D. Zhou, D. Cai
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Works
Compressive sensing (CS) theory demonstrates that by using uniformly-random sampling, rather than uniformly-spaced sampling, higher quality image reconstructions are often achievable. Considering that the structure of sampling protocols has such a profound impact on the quality of image reconstructions, we formulate a new sampling scheme motivated by physiological receptive field structure, localized random sampling, which yields significantly improved CS image reconstructions. For each set of localized image measurements, our sampling method first randomly selects an image pixel and then measures its nearby pixels with probability depending on their distance from the initially selected pixel. We compare the uniformly-random and localized …

The Receptacular Nectar Tubes Of Pelargonium (Geraniaceae): A Study Of Development, Length Variation, And Histology, Timothy Tsai
Master's Theses
The nectaries of Pelargonium are unusual in the Geraniaceae in that the flowers only have one deep dorsal tube as opposed to five shallow canals. The genus is also known for having great length variation in nectar tubes, variation that has been suggested to play an important role in the diversification of this genus. Interpretations of Pelargonium nectaries contradict each other as some describe the nectar tube as an adnate sepal spur while others describe it as an hypanthial tube as a result of an elongate receptacle. In addition, the developmental basis of differing nectar tube lengths is unknown.
