Language immersion schools offer students from diverse backgrounds with an opportunity for language enrichment education. Yet few studies attend to students’ perspectives on writing and multilingualism in immersion schools. The purpose of this study was to explore how four students from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds were developing writing and multilingual competencies at their Spanish Immersion Elementary School (SIES). This research investigated children’s emerging theories of writing and how school policies afforded and constrained practice. Urban streams receive Cu from both treated wastewater and stormwater runoff sources. Both sources have significant quantities of organic matter (OM), which is known to control Cu speciation and bioavailability. Individual and mixed water samples from wastewater treatment plant effluents, stormwater runoff, and streams from developed areas were characterized with respect to OM concentration and spectral properties and metal concentration and size distribution. In addition, asymmetric flow-field flow fractionation coupled to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to measure concentration, size distribution and association of metals in the colloidal size range. In this study, differences in mortality rates were statistically analyzed between Kentucky Appalachian County Populations (KACP) and Kentucky Non-Appalachian County Populations (KnACP) for 2013. Health – risk factors and socio – economic conditions were also assessed to determine if they put KACP at a higher risk of the five most common causes of death in Kentucky. Estill County, a KACP, was also specifically examined for its mortality and health – risk factor rates. Many studies on environmental enrichment devices have been conducted throughout the years on both terrestrial and marine animals in captivity. However, little is known on the effect that submergible enrichment devices have on cetaceans in captivity. This study examines two male Atlantic bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), Kaiko’o and Nalu, at Sea Life Park, Hawai’i and their interaction with the Magic Box: a device consisting of a submergible vegetable crate weighed down with a weight, flipped upside down with fish underneath. A new class of N-linked protein glycosylation – arginine rhamnosylation – has recently been discovered as a critical modification for the function of bacterial elongation factor P (EF-P). Herein, we describe the synthesis of suitably protected α- and β-rhamnosylated arginine amino acid “cassettes” that can be directly installed into rhamnosylated peptides. Preparation of a proteolytic fragment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa EF-P bearing both α- and β-rhamnosylated arginine enabled the unequivocal determination of the native glycosidic linkage to be α through 2D NMR and nano-UHPLC-tandem mass spectrometry studies.

Background: Schizotypy is a construct that captures quantitative dimensions of the psychosis continuum from clinical to non-clinical expressions. The purpose of this study was to determine the factor structure and criterion validity of a newly revised self-report measure, the Schizotypal Personality Questionnaire–Brief Revised Updated (SPQ-BRU; Davidson, Hoffman, & Spaulding, 2016) for predicting later cognitive-perceptual experiences in college undergraduates.

In 2005-2006, 87% of all reported cases of disease outbreak in the United States related to recreational water use was caused by bacterial infections of the gastrointestinal tract. Several locations featuring recreational bodies of water in Western New York include: Durand Eastman Beach, Charlotte Beach, the Genesee River, Black Creek, Irondequoit Bay and Oatka Creek. Adequate monitoring of water quality is necessary due to contamination with pathogenic strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and enteric pathogens such as Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella typhimurium, and Shigella sonnei that can threaten the safety of swimming in these recreational waters. The Mn(TpCPP)-Xln10A artificial metalloenzyme, obtained by non-covalent insertion of Mn(III)-meso-tetrakis(p-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin [Mn(TpCPP), 1-Mn] into xylanase 10A from Streptomyces lividans (Xln10A) as a host protein, was found able to catalyze the selective photo-induced oxidation of organic substrates in the presence of [RuII(bpy)3] 2+ as a photosensitizer and [CoIII(NH3)5Cl]2+ as a sacrificial electron acceptor, using water as oxygen atom source.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeteksi senyawa fitokimia dan menguji aktivitas antioksidan ekstrak metanol, ekstrak  etil asetat, total flavonoida dan flavonoid aglikona  daun benalu kakao (Dendrophthoe pentandra (L.) Miq.). Serbuk kering daun D. pentandra (L.) Miq. (10 kg) dimaserasi dengan menggunakan metanol, ekstrak metanol diekstraksi kembali dengan etil asetat, ekstrak etil asetat dipartisi dengan n-heksana. Residu yang tersisa (total flavonoida) dihidrolisis dengan HCl 2 N sehingga diperoleh flavonoid aglikona.  Diperoleh ekstrak metanol sebanyak  830 g (8,3%), ekstrak etil asetat 108 g (1,08%), total flavonoida 45 g (0,06%) dan flavonoid aglikona 6,2 g (0,06%) dan semua ekstrak  berwarna hitam. Senyawa triterpenoid 3β-hidroksi-tirukal-7-en (1) telah diisolasi dari ekstrak daun kapi nango (Dysoxylum arborescens). Struktur kimia senyawa ditentukan menggunakan data spektroskopi yang meliputi IR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, MS dan perbandingan dengan senyawa yang telah dilaporkan sebelumnya. Aktivitas sitotoksik senyawa 1 terhadap sel kanker payudara MCF-7  menunjukkan nilai IC50 155,1 ppm.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melakukan biosintesis nanopartikel perak menggunakan ekstrak rimpang jahe merah sebagai pereduksi pada suhu ruang. Sintesis dilakukan dengan pengadukan pada shaker (150 rpm) dan tanpa pengadukan dengan rasio ekstrak dan larutan AgNO3 1:1; 1:3; 1:4; 1:5; 1:10 dan 1:20 pada berbagai rentang waktu pengamatan. Hasil memperlihatkan bahwa metabolit sekunder pada ekstrak jahe merah mampu mereduksi Ag+ menjadi Ag0 dan membentuk nanopartikel perak yang diindikasikan dengan adanya perubahan warna larutan. Nanopartikel perak dikarakterisasi menggunakan spektrofotometer UV-Vis dan absorbansi maksimum terukur di sekitar 450 nm. A methyl ester of L-mandelic acid was found to be an effective resolving agent for resolution of commercial DL-isoleucine. The resolution was based on Steglich esterification between methyl L-mandelate and Boc-DL-isoleucine. The two resolved isomers were easily separated by using a conventional flash-column chromatography, giving quantitatively good yields. Unfortunately, the methyl L-mandelate was found to be ineffective to resolve four stereoisomers of Fmoc- isoleucine.

The major part of this thesis describes studies of human ubiquitin-specific protease 7 (USP7), a deubiquitinating enzyme that regulates cellular levels of key oncoproteins and tumor suppressors. Inactivation of USP7 has recently emerged as a new approach to treatment of malignancies. However, design of potent and specific small-molecule compounds requires detailed understanding of the molecular mechanisms of USP7 substrate recognition and regulation of its catalytic activity. Diseases such as periodontal disease, chronic inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmune disease are reported to be associated with changes in the bacteria populations in specific locations of the body, particularly the gastrointestinal tract and the oral cavity. Because oral and gastrointestinal microbiomes do not typically invade tissues in the host with chronic inflammatory disease, considerable work has instead focused on virulence factors produced by these organisms and their role in triggering innate immune responses that may promote chronic inflammatory diseases.
