National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

In the current human-modified world, or Anthropocene, the state of water stores and fluxes has become dependent on human as well as natural processes.Water deficits (or droughts) are the result of a complex interaction between meteorological anomalies, land surface processes, and human inflows, outflows, and storage changes. Our current inability to adequately analyse and manage drought in many places points to gaps in our understanding and to inadequate data and tools. The Anthropocene requires a new framework for drought definitions and research. Drought definitions need to be revisited to explicitly include human processes driving and modifying soil moisture drought and …

Permanganate-oxidizable C (POXC) and mineralizable C (as determined by short-term aerobic incubation of rewetted soil) are measures of active organic matter that may provide early indication of soil C stabilization and mineralization processes. To date, the relationship between these two promising active organic matter tests has not been comprehensively evaluated, and little is known about their functional role in the soil ecosystem. Here, we examined the relationship between POXC and mineralizable C across a wide range of soil types, management histories, and geographic locations across the United States (13 studies, 76 total sites; n = 1071) and the ability of …

Recent Insights Into Nitrite Signaling Processes In Blood, Christine C. Helms, Xiaohua Liu, Daniel B. Kim-Shapiro Sep 2016

Recent Insights Into Nitrite Signaling Processes In Blood, Christine C. Helms, Xiaohua Liu, Daniel B. Kim-Shapiro

Physics Faculty Publications

Nitrite was once thought to be inert in human physiology. However, research over the past few decades has established a link between nitrite and the production of nitric oxide (NO) that is potentiated under hypoxic and acidic conditions. Under this new role nitrite acts as a storage pool for bioavailable NO. The NO so produced is likely to play important roles in decreasing platelet activation, contributing to hypoxic vasodilation and minimizing blood-cell adhesion to endothelial cells. Researchers have proposed multiple mechanisms for nitrite reduction in the blood. However, NO production in blood must somehow overcome rapid scavenging by hemoglobin in …

Prospective And Dyadic Associations Between Expectant Parents’ Prenatal Hormone Changes And Postpartum Parenting Outcomes, Robin S. Edelstein, William J. Chopik, Darby E. Saxbe, Britney M. Wardecker, Amy C. Moors, Onawa P. Labelle Sep 2016

Prospective And Dyadic Associations Between Expectant Parents’ Prenatal Hormone Changes And Postpartum Parenting Outcomes, Robin S. Edelstein, William J. Chopik, Darby E. Saxbe, Britney M. Wardecker, Amy C. Moors, Onawa P. Labelle

Psychology Faculty Articles and Research

During the transition to parenthood, both men and women experience hormone changes that are thought to promote parental care. Yet very few studies have explicitly tested the hypothesis that prenatal hormone changes are associated with postpartum parenting behavior. In a longitudinal study of 27 first-time expectant couples, we assessed whether prenatal hormone changes predicted self and partner-reported parenting outcomes at three months postpartum. Expectant fathers showed prenatal declines in testosterone and estradiol, and larger declines in these hormones predicted larger contributions to household and infant care tasks postpartum. Women whose partners showed larger testosterone declines also reported receiving more support …

Simulation And Analysis Of Gradient Frequency Neural Networks, Amirali Farokhniaee Sep 2016

Simulation And Analysis Of Gradient Frequency Neural Networks, Amirali Farokhniaee

Doctoral Dissertations

The methodologies introduced and applied in this work have fundamental roles in connecting the component level descriptions of brain dynamics (single neurons) to population level (neural networks). The synchronization regions of a single neuron with respect to a periodic external stimulus either deterministic or noisy is evaluated. Many neurons in the auditory system of the brain must encode periodic signals. These neurons under periodic stimulation display rich dynamical states including mode-locking and chaotic responses. Periodic stimuli such as sinusoidal waves and amplitude modulated (AM) sounds can lead to various forms of n:m mode-locked states, in which a neuron fires n …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers

Purpose. To assess the feasibility of adding hyperthermia to an original method of organ-preserving brachytherapy treatment for locally advanced head and neck tumors. Methods and materials. The method involves organ-preserving tumor resection and adjunctive high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy delivered via afterloading catheters. These catheters are embedded in a polymeric implant prepared intraoperatively to fill the resection cavity, allowing precise computer planning of dose distribution in the surrounding at-risk tumor bed tissue. Theoretical and experimental analyzes address the feasibility of heating the tumor bed implant by coupling energy from a 100 kHz magnetic field applied externally into ferromagnetic particles, which are uniformly …

Structural Determinants Allowing Transferase Activity In Sensitive To Freezing 2, Classified As A Family I Glycosyl Hydrolase, Rebecca Roston, Kun Wang, Leslie A. Kuhn, Christoph Benning

Department of Biochemistry: Faculty Publications

Background: SENSITIVE TO FREEZING 2 (SFR2) is classified as a glycosyl hydrolase, and by using glycosyltransferase activity, it modifies membrane lipids to promote freeze tolerance.

Results: Although the active site of SFR2 is identical to hydrolases, adjacent loop regions contribute to its transferase activity.

Conclusion: Transferase activity evolved by modifications external to the core catalytic site.

Significance: Defined structure-function relationships will inform engineering of transferases and freeze tolerance.

Development Of Microsatellite Markers For Loxosceles Devia Gertsch & Mulaik (Araneae: Sicariidae) Using Next Generation Sequencing, Tanya Y. Garza Sep 2016

Development Of Microsatellite Markers For Loxosceles Devia Gertsch & Mulaik (Araneae: Sicariidae) Using Next Generation Sequencing, Tanya Y. Garza

Theses and Dissertations

Brown recluse spiders in the genus Loxosceles are known for causing severe necrotic skin lesions. Despite their impact on human health, very little is known concerning the genetic diversity or population structure of this genus. The development of a suite of molecular markers (microsatellites) would allow us to obtain genetic data and expand the resources available to study Loxosceles devia, the species found throughout south Texas. Microsatellites are long tandem repeats about 1-6 nucleotides long of DNA, also known as simple sequence repeats. Their co-dominant method of inheritance, wide spread distribution across the nuclear genome, ease of scoring, and high …

The Characterization Of The Novel Gene Cia7 Using Pb Exposed Wild-Type And Mutant Strains Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Jose Angel Gutierrez Sep 2016

The Characterization Of The Novel Gene Cia7 Using Pb Exposed Wild-Type And Mutant Strains Of Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, Jose Angel Gutierrez

Theses and Dissertations

Industrialization has increased the risk of heavy metal contamination. This leads to contamination of the ecosystem surrounding microalga and other primary producers. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii is a unicellular alga that is of interest in toxicity studies due its detoxification pathways. This study aims to compare three common markers of cellular health and heavy metal homeostasis namely, levels of Pb bioaccumulation, chlorophyll fluorescence, and cell size between two strains of C. reinhardtii: a wild type (CC4425) and a mutant (CC5013). The mutant strain has a gene designated as Cia7 that has been disrupted by Ble insert. Cia7’s cysteine rich protein product (CIA7) …

Tributyltin Exposure Alters Cytokine Levels In Mouse Serum, Shanieek Lawrence, Samuel T. Pellom Jr., Anil Shanker, Margaret M. Whalen Sep 2016

Tributyltin Exposure Alters Cytokine Levels In Mouse Serum, Shanieek Lawrence, Samuel T. Pellom Jr., Anil Shanker, Margaret M. Whalen

Chemistry Faculty Research

Tributyltin (TBT), a toxic environmental contaminant, has been widely utilized for various industrial, agricultural and household purposes. Its usage has led to a global contamination and its bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms and terrestrial mammals. Previous studies suggest that TBT has debilitating effects on the overall immune function of animals, rendering them more vulnerable to diseases. TBT (at concentrations that have been detected in human blood) alters secretion of inflammatory cytokines from human lymphocytes ex vivo. Thus, it is important to determine if specified levels of TBT can alter levels of cytokines in an in vivo system. Mice were exposed to …

The Nepal Ambient Monitoring and Source Testing Experiment (NAMaSTE) campaign took place in and around the Kathmandu Valley and in the Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) of southern Nepal during April 2015. The source characterization phase targeted numerous important but undersampled (and often inefficient) combustion sources that are widespread in the developing world such as cooking with a variety of stoves and solid fuels, brick kilns, open burning of municipal solid waste (a.k.a. trash or garbage burning), crop residue burning, generators, irrigation pumps, and motorcycles. NAMaSTE produced the first, or rare, measurements of aerosol optical properties, aerosol mass, and detailed trace gas …
