Cellular life relies on gene expression, in which DNA is first transcribed into RNA, which is then translated into protein. Transcription is performed by the protein RNA polymerase (RNAP), which interacts with DNA in three sequential events known as initiation, elongation and termination. Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) represents a global burden to public health, and the transcription factors CarD and RbpA are both essential to Mtb. I have studied the effect of CarD and RbpA on transcription initiation in vitro at the Mtb rrnAP3 promoter. Ribosomes are vital to the survival of a cell, as they are directly responsible for the synthesis of proteins, which perform critical cellular functions. As such, majority of the energy reserves in a proliferating cell are expended towards synthesis of ribosomes. Cancer cells, with their enhanced proliferation rates, tend to upregulate ribosome biogenesis in order to meet the demand for increased protein synthesis necessary to sustain rapid proliferation. Many of the oncogenes and tumor suppressors known to be deregulated in cancers are capable of positively and negatively regulating ribosome biogenesis, respectively. The visual cortex is a densely-interconnected network of neurons, which receives sensory input from the early visual pathway, and represents information about the visual world in the resulting spatiotemporal activity patterns. These patterns are mediated by cortical interactions that span multiple spatial scales (i.e., neuron-neuron, neuron-population, and population-population). Such interactions are a fundamental property of cortical function, and capture the contribution of the cortex to sensory coding. Cancers, including hematologic malignancies, arise as a result of the stepwise accumulation of mutations. Some early mutations that potentially initiate clonal expansion might exist in patients many years before they develop obvious disease symptoms. Therefore, identifying and characterizing these early mutations are critical to understanding the genetic basis of tumorigenesis. Here, we analyzed blood-derived DNA sequencing data from 2,728 individuals without apparent hematologic malignancies and identified 77 blood-specific mutations in 31 cancer-associated genes. Importantly, 83% of all mutations occurred in 19 genes that have been previously linked to hematological malignancies, such as DNMT3A, TET2, JAK2, and ASXL1. By investigating these …

Over 8600 species are currently recorded in the phylum Porifera (sponges). They produce a large diversity of biochemical compounds including sterols, with more than 250 different sterols identified. Some of these sterols are of great interest, due to their use for fingerprinting in ecological and biomarker (molecular fossil) studies. As a large number of identified extant species from biodiversity surveys are housed in museum collections, preserved in ethanol, these present a potentially rich source of identified specimens for comparative lipid analyses. The brain is inherently a dynamical system whose networks interact at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Understanding the functional role of these dynamic interactions is a fundamental question in neuroscience. In this research, we approach this question through the development of new methods for characterizing brain dynamics from real data and new theories for linking dynamics to function. We perform our study at two scales: macro (at the level of brain regions) and micro (at the level of individual neurons).

This thesis examines English household literature of the sixteenth century to assess normative patterns of masculinity and patriarchy. Throughout that century, in spite of prolific changes having occurred in the realm of English material and intellectual culture, the patterns of masculinity observed in these texts show a remarkable pattern of consistency. This lack of change is in keeping with the works of other historians who have argued that the most salient feature of the norms of English masculinity throughout the early modern period was in fact continuity. This study examined undergraduate students' use of and attitudes towards electronic information resources (EIR). It explored the relationship between the students' attitudes and their use of EIR of the Princess Nora University Library (PNUL). A descriptive as well as correlational survey design was adopted for the study. The findings revealed that the EIR of the academic library are still in the moderate or lower level of utilization, but overall students have shown high acceptance towards using these resources. The purpose of this project was to identify the effects of various environmental factors (sea surface temperature, salinity, sea surface currents, and Earth's magnetic field intensity) on tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvier) movements in the Atlantic Ocean, with a primary focus on the influence of Earth's magnetic field. Previous studies concluded that several species of sharks are capable of detecting small electromagnetic pulses under controlled experimental conditions, however evidence is lacking regarding sharks utilize the Earth's magnetic field to navigate the open ocean. Restoration and monitoring are important conservation tools to ensure the recovery and maintenance of human impacted habitats. Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, located in Key Biscayne, Florida, has been impacted by urban development and hurricanes, leading to the historical removal of much of the park’s native habitat, including mangrove forest. After Hurricane Andrew in 1992, restoration efforts led to the replanting of a 30-hectare mangrove forest within the park. The program aims to develop protective factors through resilience promotion in order to prevent future drug abuse. The program will be called Moving for Freedom and will focus on working with children of individuals with SUD because they are at the highest risk for developing SUD (Kumpfer, 1999). Lineages tend to retain ecological characteristics of their ancestors through time. However, for some traits, selection during evolutionary history may have also played a role in determining trait values. To address the relative importance of these processes requires large-scale quantification of traits and evolutionary relationships among species. The Amazonian tree flora comprises a high diversity of angiosperm lineages and species with widely differing life-history characteristics, providing an excellent system to investigate the combined influences of evolutionary heritage and selection in determining trait variation. Animals use adhesive secretions in a plethora of ways, either for attachment, egg anchorage, mating or as either active or passive defence. The most interesting function, however, is the use of adhesive threads to capture prey, as the bonding must be performed within milliseconds and under unsuitable conditions (movement of prey, variable environmental conditions, unfavourable attack angle, etc.) to be nonetheless successful. In the following study a detailed characterization of the prey capture system of the world-renowned glowworm group Arachnocampa from the macroscopic to the ultrastructural level is performed. Asian neuroscience and neurotechnology (neuroS/T) research and development will surpass that of the United States and Europe, achieving a 60% increase in overall market growth, within the next decade. One area of ethical interest in neuroS/T involves auditory technologies: cochlear implants, middle ear prosthetics, bone-anchor hearing aids. A survey collected data on Japanese and U.S. attitudes of deafness as a disability, awareness of auditory technologies, and beliefs regarding psychosocial implications of such interventions. Objective: The purpose of this study is to explore the prevalence of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) smoking prevalence and to identify possible associations between smoking behavior and depictions of smoking presented in visual media programming commonly viewed by these groups.

Background: Recent studies have shown there is a higher prevalence of smoking in LGBT communities (Tang et al., 2004). Approximately 17.8% of adults age 18 or older in the U.S. smoke cigarettes; while, 26.6% - 36.0% of LGBT persons smoke.
