A Descriptive Content Analysis Of The Extent Of Bloom’S Taxonomy In The Reading Comprehension Questions Of The Course Book Q: Skills For Success 4 Reading And Writing, Ömer Gökhan Ulum
The Qualitative Report
Bloom’s taxonomy is probably the most commonly used one among the cognitive process models. It is a classification system that emphasizes the procedures starting from remembering the knowledge to more complex cognitive levels like evaluating the knowledge. Firstly, the aim of this study has been to find out to what extent Bloom’s taxonomy is referred in reading comprehension questions of an English as a Foreign Language course book. With this in mind, the research question To what extent do the reading sections of the EFL course book Q: Skills for Success 4 Reading and Writing cover the lower and higher …

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Gross ecosystem productivity (GEP) in tropical forests varies both with the environment and with biotic changes in photosynthetic infrastructure, but our understanding of the relative effects of these factors across timescales is limited. Here, we used a statistical model to partition the variability of seven years of eddy covariance-derived GEP in a central Amazon evergreen forest into two main causes: variation in environmental drivers (solar radiation, diffuse light fraction, and vapor pressure deficit) that interact with model parameters that govern photosynthesis and biotic variation in canopy photosynthetic light-use efficiency associated with changes in the parameters themselves. Our fitted model was …

Diclofenac And Its Transformation Products: Environmental Occurrence And Toxicity - A Review, Linson Lonappan, Satinder K. Brar, Ratul Kumar Das, Mausam Verma, Rao Y. Surampalli
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Diclofenac (DCF) is a prevalent anti-inflammatory drug used throughout the world. Intensive researches carried out in the past few decades have confirmed the global ubiquity of DCF in various environmental compartments. Its frequent occurrence in freshwater environments and its potential toxicity towards several organisms such as fish and mussels makes DCF an emerging environmental contaminant. At typical detected environmental concentrations, the drug does not exhibit toxic effects towards living organisms, albeit chronic exposure may lead to severe effects. For DCF, about 30–70% removal has been obtained through the conventional treatment system in wastewater treatment plant being the major primary sink. …

EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
In addition to keeping their own professional skills up to date, new managers need to learn quickly how to think strategically, delegate, and successfully supervise and lead their staff. In most cases, these skills are learned on the job, without prior training or with limited mentoring. We will draw on what we learned from the literature and from our own experience to illustrate the skills that we feel contribute the most to the making of a great manager and, ultimately, an effective leader.

Aquaporins (Aqp)-Based Biomimetic Membranes For Water Reuse And Desalination, Rong Wang, Anthony G. Fane
Aquaporins (Aqp)-Based Biomimetic Membranes For Water Reuse And Desalination, Rong Wang, Anthony G. Fane
Advanced Membrane Technology VII
Aquaporins (AQPs) are biological proteins that form selective natural water channels. They have received increasing attention because of their high water permeability (each water channel can pass ~ 109 water molecules per second) and superior selectivity (i.e., the water channel only allows water passage while fully rejecting solutes).
Over the past several years, many efforts have been devoted to developing AQP-based biomimetic membranes (ABM). Excitingly, this concept has been proven in the laboratory recently. AQPs have been demonstrated to be able to increase the water flux of RO flat sheet membranes when incorporated into the selective layer of the …

In-Situ Monitoring Of Ro Membranes Using Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy: Threshold Fluxes And Fouling, Hans G. L. Coster, Jia Shin Ho, Lee Nuang Sim, Anthony G. Fane
Advanced Membrane Technology VII
Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was employed to monitor RO membranes in-situ during crossflow filtration using a membrane module fitted with suitable electrodes. EIS spectra can be analyzed in terms of layers and processes that are associated with different electrical time constants. One such layer identified in the spectra is the AC diffusion polarization layer that forms at the surface of the membrane within the concentration polarization layer. The conductance, (GDP) of this layer provides an indication of the nature of the material accumulating very close to the surface. When the feed water contained inorganic foulants such as silica, …

The Utilization Of Aquatic Bushmeat From Small Cetaceans And Manatees In South America And West Africa, A. Mel Cosentino, Sue Fisher
Anthropogenics and Population Decline Collection
Aquatic bushmeat can be defined as the products derived from wild aquatic megafauna (e.g., marine mammals) that are used for human consumption and non-food purposes, including traditional medicine. It is obtained through illegal or unregulated hunts as well as from stranded (dead or alive) and bycaught animals. In most South American and West African countries aquatic mammals are or have been taken for bushmeat, including 33 small cetaceans and all three manatee species. Of these, two cetacean species are listed in the IUCN red list as “near threatened,” and one as “vulnerable,” as are all manatee species. Additionally, 22 cetacean …

Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
Abnormal phosphorylation of the microtubule-associated protein tau is observed in many neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease (AD). AD-related phosphorylation of two tau residues, Ser262 and Ser356, by PAR-1/MARK stabilizes tau in the initial phase of mismetabolism, leading to subsequent phosphorylation events, accumulation, and toxicity. However, the relative contribution of phosphorylation at each of these sites to tau stabilization has not yet been elucidated. In a Drosophila model of human tau toxicity, we found that tau was phosphorylated at Ser262, but not at Ser356, and that blocking Ser262 phosphorylation decreased total tau levels. By contrast, when PAR-1 was co-overexpressed with tau, …

M-Track: A New Software For Automated Detection Of Grooming Trajectories In Mice, Annalisa Scimemi, Lin Zhang, Kelsey E. Fleming, Sheldon L. Reeves
Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Grooming is a complex and robust innate behavior, commonly performed by most vertebrate species. In mice, grooming consists of a series of stereotyped patterned strokes, performed along the rostro-caudal axis of the body. The frequency and duration of each grooming episode is sensitive to changes in stress levels, social interactions and pharmacological manipulations, and is therefore used in behavioral studies to gain insights into the function of brain regions that control movement execution and anxiety. Traditional approaches to analyze grooming rely on manually scoring the time of onset and duration of each grooming episode, and are often performed on grooming …

Nutrient Reduction Design For Sustainable Municipal Wastewater Treatment, Lisa Brandon Ellington
Nutrient Reduction Design For Sustainable Municipal Wastewater Treatment, Lisa Brandon Ellington
Student Theses and Dissertations
Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) were designed for the removal of pollutants during management of reclaimed water to protect and prevent impairment of water resources. Pollutants not eliminated from WWTP discharges could possibly cause damage to receiving streams and sources of drinking water. Eutrophication has degraded water quality, with the primary factors established as nitrogen and phosphorus contamination in discharges to receiving streams from point and nonpoint sources. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA), through regulations established under the Clean Water Act (CWA), has been compelled to determine nitrogen and phosphorus limits for inclusion in National Pollutant Discharge Elimination …

The mitochondrial Bcl-2 inhibitor of transcription 1 (Bit1) protein is part of an anoikis-regulating pathway that is selectively dependent on integrins. We previously demonstrated that the caspase-independent apoptotic effector Bit1 exerts tumor suppressive function in lung cancer in part by inhibiting anoikis resistance and anchorage-independent growth in vitro and tumorigenicity in vivo. Herein we show a novel function of Bit1 as an inhibitor cell migration and epithelial±mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the human lung adenocarcinoma A549 cell line. Suppression of endogenous Bit1 expression via siRNA and shRNA strategies promoted mesenchymal phenotypes, including enhanced fibroblastoid morphology and cell migratory potential with concomitant …

An Exploration Of The Impact Of Animal Agriculture On Human Sustainable Development Index And The Child Health Indicator, Hithesan Pandian
Dissertations
Several studies have shown that animal agriculture is one of the major contributors to climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, land degradation, freshwater shortages, general environmental pollution and world hunger. Apart from this, meat consumption is strongly associated with certain fatal health conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes (Wu, 2014). Although meat production and export could be economically beneficial in the short run, it could lead to over-exploitation of natural resources and in turn the destruction of the environment in the long run. Hence, it is essential for the leaders of a nation to make smart …

The London Workshop On The Biogeography And Connectivity Of The Clarion-Clipperton Zone, A Glover, Et Al
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Recent years have seen a rapid increase in survey and sampling expeditions to the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) abyssal plain, a vast area of the central Pacific that is currently being actively explored for deep-sea minerals (ISA, 2016). Critical to the development of evidence-based environmental policy in the CCZ are data on the biogeography and connectivity of species at a CCZ-regional level. The London Workshop on the Biogeography and Connectivity of the CCZ was convened to support the integration and synthesis of data from European Union (EU) CCZ projects, supported by the EU Managing Impacts of Deep-Sea Resource Exploitation (MIDAS) and …
