Plant Electrical Signal Classification Based On Waveform Similarity, Yang Chen, Dong-Jie Zhao, Zi-Yang Wang, Zhong-Yi Wang, Guiliang Tang, Lan Huang Oct 2016

Plant Electrical Signal Classification Based On Waveform Similarity, Yang Chen, Dong-Jie Zhao, Zi-Yang Wang, Zhong-Yi Wang, Guiliang Tang, Lan Huang

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

(1) Background: Plant electrical signals are important physiological traits which reflect plant physiological state. As a kind of phenotypic data, plant action potential (AP) evoked by external stimuli—e.g., electrical stimulation, environmental stress—may be associated with inhibition of gene expression related to stress tolerance. However, plant AP is a response to environment changes and full of variability. It is an aperiodic signal with refractory period, discontinuity, noise, and artifacts. In consequence, there are still challenges to automatically recognize and classify plant AP; (2) Methods: Therefore, we proposed an AP recognition algorithm based on dynamic difference threshold to extract all waveforms similar …

Mishpachah: The Jewish Family In Tradition And In Transition, Leonard Greenspoon Oct 2016

Mishpachah: The Jewish Family In Tradition And In Transition, Leonard Greenspoon

Studies in Jewish Civilization

Dictionary definitions of the term mishpachah are seemingly straightforward: “A Jewish family or social unit including close and distant relatives—sometimes also close friends.” As accurate as such definitions are, they fail to capture the diversity and vitality of real, flesh-and-blood Jewish families.

Families have been part of Jewish life for as long as there have been Jews. It is useful to recall that the family is the basic narrative building block of the stories in the biblical book of Genesis, which can be interpreted in the light of ancient literary traditions, archaeological discoveries, and rabbinic exegesis. Rabbinic literature also is …

Underwater Navigation And Calibration Of Jiaolong Manned Submersible In The Southwest Indian Ridge Hydrothermal Vents, Xiang Gao, Hong-Jun Yu, Kang Ding, Yu Zhang, Sheng-Ya Zhao, Tong-Wei Zhang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

China’s 7000 m manned submersible JIAOLONG carried out an exploration cruise on the Indian Ocean Ridge from late 2014 to early 2015. During the cruise, the submersible completed manned diving in situ investigations into hydrothermal vents in the area. One of the primary tasks of the work was to map the vents precisely. In this paper, we briefly introduce the cruise, and then focus on the submersible’s underwater navigation and the positioning of five hydrothermal vents using the Ultra-Short Base Line positioning system of JIAOLONG. This study describes the positioning data of each vent from different dives, and discusses the …

Highly Selective Halide Receptors Based Upon Chalcogen, Pnicogen, And Tetrel Bonds, Steve Scheiner Oct 2016

Highly Selective Halide Receptors Based Upon Chalcogen, Pnicogen, And Tetrel Bonds, Steve Scheiner

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

The interactions of halides with a number of bipodal receptors are examined via quantum chemical methods. The receptors are based upon a dithieno thiophene framework in which two S atoms can engage in a pair of chalcogen bonds with a halide. These two S atoms are replaced by P and As atoms to compare chalcogen with pnicogen bonding, and by Ge which engages in tetrel bonds with the receptor. Zero, one, and two O atoms are added to the thiophene S atom which is not directly involved in the interaction with the halides. Fluoride is bound the most strongly, followed …

Detection Of Fungal Infections Using Sers | Biological Engineering, Usu College Of Engineering

College of Engineering News

Climate change, mass production of feedstocks, improved survival rates for patient with serious autoimmune diseases and cancers have increases the risk of fungus-caused infections in geographic areas previously thought safe. Most serious, are aggressive fungal infections that create difficult to treat pneumonias that lead to organ failure and death. Immune-compromised individuals need to initiate medication treatment as early as possible to have a chance of survival. Normally healthy individual may spread the infection unknowingly, since in the early stages their symptoms may appear to be no more than a common cold. With the change in climate, atypical fungal species will …

Anatomy and Cell Biology Publications

The prion protein (PrPC) has been suggested to operate as a scaffold/receptor protein in neurons, participating in both physiological and pathological associated events. PrPC, laminin, and metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5) form a protein complex on the plasma membrane that can trigger signaling pathways involved in neuronal differentiation. PrPC and mGluR5 are co-receptors also for -amyloid oligomers (AOs) and have been shown to modulate toxicity and neuronal death in Alzheimer's disease. In the present work, we addressed the potential crosstalk between these two signaling pathways, laminin-PrPC-mGluR5 or AO-PrPC-mGluR5, as well as their interplay. Herein, we demonstrated that an existing complex …

Hearing In The Juvenile Green Sea Turtle (Chelonia Mydas): A Comparison Of Underwater And Aerial Hearing Using Auditory Evoked Potentials, Wendy Dow Piniak, David A. Mann, Craig A. Harms, T. Todd Jones, Scott A. Eckert

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Sea turtles spend much of their life in aquatic environments, but critical portions of their life cycle, such as nesting and hatching, occur in terrestrial environments, suggesting that it may be important for them to detect sounds in both air and water. In this study we compared underwater and aerial hearing sensitivities in five juvenile green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) by measuring auditory evoked potential responses to tone pip stimuli. Green sea turtles detected acoustic stimuli in both media, responding to underwater stimuli between 50 and 1600 Hz and aerial stimuli between 50 and 800 Hz, with maximum …
