Supporting Sensemaking Of Complex Objects With Visualizations: Visibility And Complementarity Of Interactions, Kamran Sedig, Paul Parsons, Hai-Ning Liang, Jim Morey Oct 2016

Supporting Sensemaking Of Complex Objects With Visualizations: Visibility And Complementarity Of Interactions, Kamran Sedig, Paul Parsons, Hai-Ning Liang, Jim Morey

All Works

Making sense of complex objects is difficult, and typically requires the use of external representations to support cognitive demands while reasoning about the objects. Visualizations are one type of external representation that can be used to support sensemaking activities. In this paper, we investigate the role of two design strategies in making the interactive features of visualizations more supportive of users’ exploratory needs when trying to make sense of complex objects. These two strategies are visibility and complementarity of interactions. We employ a theoretical framework concerned with human–information interaction and complex cognitive activities to inform, contextualize, and interpret the effects …

In Vivo Calcium Imaging Study Of The Geniculate Ganglion And The Taste Transmission In The Periphery, An Wu Oct 2016

In Vivo Calcium Imaging Study Of The Geniculate Ganglion And The Taste Transmission In The Periphery, An Wu

Open Access Dissertations

Taste information travels from the taste end organ, taste buds, to gustatory sensory neurons before integrating into central gustatory regions. In taste buds, receptor cells transduce sweet, bitter, or umami taste. Presynaptic cells directly transduce sour taste although they respond to multiple tastes as well via cell-cell communications. Salty taste is believed to be sensed by ENaC-expressing taste cells. Despite this consensus about coding in taste buds, whether information in gustatory sensory neurons is organized following the labeled-line theory or more complex coding mechanisms remains controversial. The geniculate ganglion is a major sensory ganglion of the gustatory system; it innervates …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

We demonstrate electrochemical control of the nitrogenase MoFe protein, in the absence of Fe protein or ATP, using europium(III/II) polyaminocarboxylate complexes as electron transfer mediators. This allows the potential dependence of proton reduction and inhibitor (CO) binding to the active site FeMo-cofactor to be established. Reduction of protons to H2 is catalyzed by the wild type MoFe protein and Β-98Tyr→His and Β-99Phe→His variants of the MoFe protein at potentials more negative than -800 mV (vs. SHE), with greater electrocatalytic proton reduction rates observed for the variants compared to the wild type protein. Electrocatalytic proton reduction is strongly …

Collegiate Active Learning Calculus Survey (Calcs): Adapting An Instrument And Using Results, Wendy M. Smith

Discipline-Based Education Research Group Speaker Series

When we make changes to a course, we want to know if they "worked." There is often a desire to broaden the definition of success beyond student (passing) grades. We know from research that the further students go in mathematics, their attitudes toward and beliefs about mathematics get more and more negative. Thus, if we slow or even reverse that trend, we might then claim success for our reform efforts. Research teams at the University of Colorado Boulder created the CLASS: Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey; this was originally designed for undergraduate physics, then later adapted for use with …

Gwu Professors Helped Steer Alumna In The Right Career Path, Office Of University Communications

Gardner-Webb NewsCenter Archive

Kristy Young Johnson (’92) took a course in her first semester at Gardner-Webb that prevented her from making the wrong decision about her future. “I hadn’t really considered a career in science before I got to GWU,” Johnson shared. “I was enrolled in biology with Dr. Tom Jones. His class was a wonderful introduction, touching on so many different aspects of biology that I finished the semester wanting to know more. Every science class I took just added to my curiosity.”

Response Of A Doublet To A Nearby Dc Electrode Of Uniform Potential, Christopher L. Wirth, Sri Harsha Nuthalapati Oct 2016

Response Of A Doublet To A Nearby Dc Electrode Of Uniform Potential, Christopher L. Wirth, Sri Harsha Nuthalapati

Chemical & Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications

The electric-field-assisted directed assembly of spherical colloidal particles near an electrode has been studied for nearly three decades. Recently, focus has shifted to the electric-field-assisted assembly and propulsion of nonspherical (i.e., anisotropic) particles. This paper describes calculations and results for a doublet of asymmetric ζ potential and size responding to a dc electric field. The doublet experienced a net vertical force that depended on both the asymmetry in ζ potential and lobe size. In addition, the doublet experienced a net lateral force perpendicular to the applied electric field. The lateral force depended on the difference in ζ potential of the …

An Examination Of Career Satisfaction For Medical Laboratory Professionals Using Wlodkowski's Motivational Framework, Kathleen Mcloughlin Kenwright Oct 2016

An Examination Of Career Satisfaction For Medical Laboratory Professionals Using Wlodkowski's Motivational Framework, Kathleen Mcloughlin Kenwright

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Medical laboratory science professionals are healthcare practitioners who provide laboratory data that aids in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. However, there is a large shortage of these professionals who perform the laboratory tests behind the scenes with very minimal patient contact. The purpose of this research was to determine which job features create motivation and career satisfaction to retain personnel in the medical laboratory profession. The four research questions which guided this study were based on Wlodkowski's theory of motivation: Is there a difference in perceived career satisfaction among medical laboratory scientists who: (a) feel more included by …

Transcriptomic Comparison Of Invasive Bigheaded Carps (Hypophthalmichthys Nobilis And Hypophthalmichthys Molitrix) And Their Hybrids, Jun Wang, James T. Lamer, Sarah Gaughan, Michael Wachholtz, Chenghui Wang, Guoquing Lu Oct 2016

Transcriptomic Comparison Of Invasive Bigheaded Carps (Hypophthalmichthys Nobilis And Hypophthalmichthys Molitrix) And Their Hybrids, Jun Wang, James T. Lamer, Sarah Gaughan, Michael Wachholtz, Chenghui Wang, Guoquing Lu

Biology Faculty Publications

Bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), collectively called bigheaded carps, are invasive species in the Mississippi River Basin (MRB). Interspecific hybridization between bigheaded carps has been considered rare within their native rivers in China; however, it is prevalent in the MRB. We conducted de novo transcriptome analysis of pure and hybrid bigheaded carps and obtained 40,759 to 51,706 transcripts for pure, F1 hybrid, and backcross bigheaded carps. The search against protein databases resulted in 20,336–28,133 annotated transcripts (over 50% of the transcriptome) with over 13,000 transcripts mapped to 23 Gene Ontology biological processes and 127 KEGG metabolic …

Signaling Through Lrg1, Rho1 And Pkc1 Governs Candida Albicans Morphogenesis In Response To Diverse Cues, Jinglin L. Xie, Nora Grahl, Trevor Sless, Michelle Leach, Sang Hu Kim, Deborah Hogan

Dartmouth Scholarship

The capacity to transition between distinct morphological forms is a key virulence trait for diverse fungal pathogens. A poignant example of a leading opportunistic fungal pathogen of humans for which an environmentally responsive developmental program underpins virulence is Candida albicans. C. albicans mutants that are defective in the transition between yeast and filamentous forms typically have reduced virulence. Although many positive regulators of C. albicans filamentation have been defined, there are fewer negative regulators that have been implicated in repression of filamentation in the absence of inducing cues. To discover novel negative regulators of filamentation, we screened …

Managing With Purpose: Integrating Assessment, Planning, And Budgeting, Gregory A. Smith Oct 2016

Managing With Purpose: Integrating Assessment, Planning, And Budgeting, Gregory A. Smith

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Assessment, planning, and budgeting are interrelated disciplines that play an important role in accomplishing a library's mission. This conference session introduces tools and concepts that will equip attendees to manage library services strategically in response to evolving customer needs and environmental conditions. Four tools—the logic model, six dimensions of assessment, the balanced scorecard, and the business model canvas—will enable managers to evaluate, plan, and communicate progress in the pursuit of mission and vision. Additionally, two concepts—opportunity cost and the principal-agent problem—will provide context for planning and budgeting decisions.

Systems Thinking In The Forest Service: A Framework To Guide Practical Application For Social-Ecological Management In The Enterprise Program, Megan Kathleen Kmon Oct 2016

Systems Thinking In The Forest Service: A Framework To Guide Practical Application For Social-Ecological Management In The Enterprise Program, Megan Kathleen Kmon

Dissertations and Theses

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) Enterprise Program (EP), which provides fee-for-service consulting services to the USFS, is interested in integrating systems thinking into its service offerings. Despite there being several excellent sources on the range and diversity of systems thinking, no single framework exists that thoroughly yet concisely outlines what systems thinking is along with its deep history, theoretical tenets, and soft and hard approaches. This thesis is an attempt to create such a framework, aimed specifically at practical application in a land management agency, through literature synthesis injected with original analysis. The usefulness of the framework is then tested …

Directional Floral Orientation In Joshua Trees (Yucca Brevifolia), Steven D. Warren, L. Scott Baggett, Heather Warren Oct 2016

Directional Floral Orientation In Joshua Trees (Yucca Brevifolia), Steven D. Warren, L. Scott Baggett, Heather Warren

Western North American Naturalist

Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia Engelm.) is a large, arborescent member of the yucca genus. It is an endemic and visually dominant plant in portions of the Mojave Desert, USA. We document the unique and heretofore unreported directional orientation of its flower panicles. The flower panicles grow primarily at the tips of branches that are oriented to the south. When branches with flower panicles are not oriented in a southerly direction, the flower panicles themselves tend to bend or tilt toward the south. This strategy maximizes exposure of the panicles to direct solar radiation, which, within the latitudes where the …
