Analysis Of Unfrozen Water In Cation-Treated, Fine-Grained Soils Using The Pulse Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (P-Nmr) Method, Aaron M. Kruse Dec 2016

Analysis Of Unfrozen Water In Cation-Treated, Fine-Grained Soils Using The Pulse Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (P-Nmr) Method, Aaron M. Kruse

Engineering

Unfrozen water within frozen soils is a key component that determines a soil's thermophysical response to changing physical and environmental conditions. This research focuses on the use of pulse nuclear magnetic resonance (P-NMR) for measuring unfrozen water content within frozen soils. The research is divided into two components: 1) improvements made to the P-NMR testing method, including refinements in the laboratory set up and testing procedure, and experimental validation of the normalization method; and 2) determination of unfrozen water content of fine-grained, cation-treated samples at various sub-freezing temperatures using the improved P-NMR methodology. Previous P-NMR testing used the first return …

Cloning And Expression Of Bovine Alpha S1 Casein Peptides Of Variable Size And Position Of Sppep Inhibitor Sequence, Avleen Kaur Vishram Dec 2016

Cloning And Expression Of Bovine Alpha S1 Casein Peptides Of Variable Size And Position Of Sppep Inhibitor Sequence, Avleen Kaur Vishram

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Eurygaster integriceps Puton (Sunn pest) is the most damaging insect pest of wheat in areas of North Africa, Eastern Europe and Western and Central Asia. Sunn pest injects an enzyme characterized as a prolyl endylprotease (spPEP) into wheat grains that digests the gluten protein (Darkoh et al., 2010). Previous studies have shown that casein peptides generated by Lactobacillus species have inhibitory effects on human (hPEP) and bacterial prolyl endoproteases (bPEP) which makes casein a good natural candidate to inhibit spPEP. Developing biopesticides for food products from αS1 casein is complicated due to some allergenic amino acid sequences. Ruiter et al …

Forecasting Stock-Specific Upriver Migration Timing Of Chinook Salmon In The Yukon River, Bryce Douglas Mecum Dec 2016

Forecasting Stock-Specific Upriver Migration Timing Of Chinook Salmon In The Yukon River, Bryce Douglas Mecum

Fisheries

Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) are an economically and culturally important genus of fishes endemic to the North Pacific. Their sustainable management depends on an understanding of the drivers of their abundance and migration dynamics. In many instances, statistical models are employed to predict abundance and run timing before harvest takes place to more effectively meet management objectives. In this thesis, I created a general-purpose predictive model of run timing that can be applied to many salmon populations. I then applied it to Yukon River Chinook salmon (O. tshawytscha) by generating pre-season predictions of inriver run timing, which I then compared …

Seasonal Thermal Habitat Use And Bathymetric Distribution Of Burbot In Tanada And Copper Lakes, Alaska, Heather L. Scannell Dec 2016

Seasonal Thermal Habitat Use And Bathymetric Distribution Of Burbot In Tanada And Copper Lakes, Alaska, Heather L. Scannell

Fisheries

Burbot Lota lota are a cold water, benthic, primarily piscivorous species that inhabits lakes and rivers throughout their Holarctic distribution. Habitat requirements for Burbot are still poorly understood, in part due to the disregard this species has received in fisheries management plans. From June 2009 through September 2011, I investigated the seasonal movements and bathymetric distribution of Burbot in Tanada and Copper lakes, Alaska, using archival tags programmed to record water depth and temperature. One hundred and forty Burbot (70 in each lake) were surgically implanted with archival tags, and 1 year later fish were recaptured to retrieve the archived …

For Generations To Come: Exploring Local Fisheries Access And Community Viability In The Kodiak Archipelago, Danielle J. Ringer Dec 2016

For Generations To Come: Exploring Local Fisheries Access And Community Viability In The Kodiak Archipelago, Danielle J. Ringer

Fisheries

The sustainability of fisheries and fishing-dependent communities depends upon numerous political, cultural, economic, and ecological factors. My research explores a key threat to this sustainability in Alaska -- the graying of the commercial fishing fleet. As current fishermen approach retirement age and a decreasing number of young people obtain ownership level careers in Alaska's fisheries, succession impacts become an increasingly pressing issue. This research utilized a political ecology framework and mixed methods ethnography, including 70 semi-structured interviews and 609 student surveys, to study local fisheries access and community viability in the Kodiak Archipelago communities of Kodiak City, Old Harbor, and …

Evaluation Of Growth, Survival, And Recruitment Of Chinook Salmon In Southeast Alaska Rivers, Cory J. Graham Dec 2016

Evaluation Of Growth, Survival, And Recruitment Of Chinook Salmon In Southeast Alaska Rivers, Cory J. Graham

Fisheries

Recent reductions in the run sizes of Chinook Salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha in Southeast Alaska have resulted in social and economic hardships within the region. Pacific salmon yearclass strength may be determined by size-selective processes during the early marine phase of their life cycle; however, the relative importance of growth during freshwater and marine residence in determining recruitment success is unknown. A scale-based retrospective analysis was conducted to examine the effects of freshwater and annual marine growth and early marine conditions on survival to reproductive maturity for female Chinook Salmon by brood year (BY) in the Taku (BYs 1979 -- 1985, …

Effects Of Variable Maternal Diet Conditions On The Reproductive Success And Development Of The California Sea Cucumber (Parastichopus Californicus), Charlotte Marie Regula-Whitefield Dec 2016

Effects Of Variable Maternal Diet Conditions On The Reproductive Success And Development Of The California Sea Cucumber (Parastichopus Californicus), Charlotte Marie Regula-Whitefield

Marine Biology

Anthropogenic and natural climate change is altering the biology and ecology of marine organisms, which can be reflected in the supply of primary production that provides food for consumers. Primary producers differ in their biochemical composition, and marine food webs are thus based on specific combinations of producers that provide key nutrients such as dietary fatty acids (FA). Some FA cannot be synthesized by marine invertebrates, and must be acquired directly from diets. Reproductive processes in marine invertebrates are often timed to correspond with seasonal patterns in primary production, such that dietary FA and other nutrients can be partitioned to …

Bonding Theatre And Chemistry: An Educational Exploration, Matthew Gurniak Dec 2016

Bonding Theatre And Chemistry: An Educational Exploration, Matthew Gurniak

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

This paper analyzes the educational aspects of theatre and music and the impact that they have on an audience. The goal was to begin a new conversation about science and theatre and how the two can learn and gain unique insight from each other. To examine how these two antithetical fields can interact, I composed a new, innovative musical that tells the love story between two professors through the use of concepts from general chemistry. The results and responses from the performance of the play were overwhelmingly positive from members of both disciplines. They have inspired continued interest in this …

Exploring The Experience Of Foster Parents As They Care For Children Who Are Making The Transition From The Hospital Into The Foster Home, Maximilian Veltman Dec 2016

Exploring The Experience Of Foster Parents As They Care For Children Who Are Making The Transition From The Hospital Into The Foster Home, Maximilian Veltman

Nursing ETDs

This study explored the perceptions foster parents have about their work as caregivers of foster children who are hospitalized and then discharged from the hospital into a foster home. The numbers of children in foster care nationwide has decreased over the past 25 years, yet the proportion of children in foster care who have significant health conditions has increased dramatically (Wang, Edelstein, Waldinger, Lee & Bath, 2011). There has also been significant attrition of qualified foster parents who are able to care for foster children with significant health needs (Pecora, Whittaker, Maluccio, Barth & DePanfilis, 2009; Vig, Chinitz & Shulman, …

Equitable Identification Of El Students For Special Education By All Teachers, Hanna Winkelman Dec 2016

Equitable Identification Of El Students For Special Education By All Teachers, Hanna Winkelman

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed in this project is: How do teachers refer EL students for special education services and how can the process be more equitable for students? The motivating factor for this research was one teacher’s frustration in referring EL students for special education services at a large urban school. The teacher felt as though the process was disorganized, inequitable and did not support EL students with the highest needs. The author interviews ESL, special education teachers and a bilingual educational assistant at one urban school to identify their perspective of the process and frustrations that arise from it. …

Transboundary Agreement: Case Studies Of Marine Mammal Management In The Bering Strait, Kelsey B. Aho Dec 2016

Transboundary Agreement: Case Studies Of Marine Mammal Management In The Bering Strait, Kelsey B. Aho

Arctic and Northern Studies

The effectiveness of a state's natural resource management is rendered meaningless if the particular resource migrates into another state's jurisdiction. In the case of marine mammals, inadequate management of the species anywhere along their annual migration could make food insecure for the regional human populations. My research evaluates to what extent International Environmental Agreements have been able to manage transboundary challenges to food security. Two case studies, the Polar Bear Agreement (U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, 2000) and the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling (International Whaling Commission, 1946), are analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively using Ronald Mitchell's four factors …

Open Access Dissertations

Hispanics are poised to change the U.S. demographic landscape and account for one-third of the national population in the next forty years (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012). Yet, presently Hispanic students are the most underrepresented ethnic group in higher education with the lowest college completion rates the country (U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2015b). Furthermore, Hispanic women are reported to attain only 3% of all STEM bachelor’s degrees nationally (U.S. Department of Education, National Center for Education Statistics, 2015a). The purpose of this study was to examine student engagement as a factor that predicts academic performance and …

Spectroscopic And Spectro-Astrometric Analysis Of T Tauri Stars, Logan Ryan Brown Dec 2016

Spectroscopic And Spectro-Astrometric Analysis Of T Tauri Stars, Logan Ryan Brown

Dissertations

To understand our own solar origins, we must investigate the composition of the protoplanetary disk from which the solar system formed. To infer this, we study analogs to the early solar system called T Tauri stars. These objects are low-mass, pre-main sequence stars surrounded by circumstellar disks of material from which planets are believed to form. We present high-resolution, near-infrared spectroscopic data for the T Tauri stars DR Tau and AA Tau using NIRSPEC at the Keck II telescope. For DR Tau, a spectro-astrometric analysis was performed, obtaining sub-seeing spatial information on water emission. Alongside a disk model, we constrained …

Integrating Habitat Suitability Modeling And Radio Telemetry To Describe Habitat Use Of The Western Massasaugas, Sistrurus T. Tergeminus, In Texas, Mitchell R. Barazowski

Biology Theses

Habitat suitability modeling using the software package MaxEnt (Phillips, Anderson, & Schapire, 2006) is a popular method for describing the habitat of rare species. MaxEnt uses “presence only” data to develop models; however presence data are highly skewed towards areas of high detection probability and these areas may not represent the full range of habitat use. Thusly, predictions from models developed using only data from areas with high detection probability may not represent all suitable habitat. This study tested the ability of MaxEnt models developed using three different data sets to accurately describe Western Massasauga (Sistrurus t. tergeminus) habitat at …

Multiplex Drug Screenings To Discover Host Oriented Therapies Against Infectious Diseases, William Leonardi Dec 2016

Multiplex Drug Screenings To Discover Host Oriented Therapies Against Infectious Diseases, William Leonardi

KGI Theses and Dissertations

Drug resistance is a longstanding and still-increasing threat to the effective treatment of infectious diseases. Discovering drugs that target host proteins involved in pathogenicity is a strategy that could address this problem. Unfortunately, there are currently no FDA-approved infectious disease therapies that specifically target host proteins. Our goal is to develop a method to i) quickly discover new drugs for the treatment infectious diseases, ii) identify the specific host protein target of the drugs, iii) investigate the broad spectrum application of the drugs. To find these types of drugs, we employed a novel multiplex drug screening method in which we …

The effects of long-term exposure to extreme space conditions on astronauts were investigated by analyzing hair samples from ten astronauts who had spent six months on the International Space Station (ISS). Two samples were collected before, during and after their stays in the ISS; hereafter, referred to as Preflight, Inflight and Postflight, respectively. The ratios of mitochondrial (mt) to nuclear (n) DNA and mtRNA to nRNA were analyzed via quantitative PCR. The combined data of Preflight, Inflight and Postflight show a significant reduction in the mtDNA/nDNA in Inflight, and significant reductions in the mtRNA/nRNA ratios in both the Inflight and …

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Photoluminescent Conjugated Frameworks Containing Silicon And Germanium, Douglas William Hammerstroem Dec 2016

The Synthesis And Characterization Of Photoluminescent Conjugated Frameworks Containing Silicon And Germanium, Douglas William Hammerstroem

Dissertations

Siloles and 9-heterofluorenes (Si, Ge) are conjugated π-electron systems containing Group 14 atoms which demonstrate unique properties such as high electron affinity, mobility, and bathochromically shifted optical spectra relative to their all-carbon analogs. This is due to their low-lying lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) which is resultant of the σ*-π* conjugation between the exocyclic groups at the Group 14 center and the butadiene unit of the ring. As a consequence, they have received considerable attention for their use as components for a wide variety of optical and electronic applications such as organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), photovoltaic devices, field-effect transistors (FETs), …

Chemosensitization Effect Of Sp1017 On Multiple Myeloma, Hangting Hu Dec 2016

Chemosensitization Effect Of Sp1017 On Multiple Myeloma, Hangting Hu

Theses & Dissertations

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a hematological malignancy of plasma cells that are predominantly located in bone marrow (BM). Despite recent improvements in MM treatment by introduction of several novel agents includingimmunomodulatory drugs, proteasome inhibitors and the use of the drug combinations, MM remains incurable and almost all patients eventually relapse or become refractory to the current treatment regimens. So the current challenge of MM treatments is to maintain treatment response, prevent relapse and eventually prolong survival.

Here we demonstrated that Pluronic block copolymers ((Pluronic L61: Pluronic F127 = 1:8 w/w, SP1017) significantly increase cytotoxicity of proteasome inhibitors (Bortezomib, BTZ or …

Design And Synthesis Of Next Generation Propargyl-Linked Antifolates, Eric Scocchera Dec 2016

Design And Synthesis Of Next Generation Propargyl-Linked Antifolates, Eric Scocchera

Doctoral Dissertations

Antibiotic resistance is an ever-present problem that reduces the arsenal of antibiotics human’s possess to fight pathogenic infections. New generations of antibiotics are therefore always required. Recent history has seen few novel classes of antibiotics, instead structural modifications of previous classes are often the source of new antibiotics. Antifolates are a colloquial name given to various compound classes that are capable of inhibiting the bacterial production of folate or enzymes that require folate for proper cellular function. Dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) is a crucial enzyme in this pathway, and is inhibited in bacteria only by trimethoprim (TMP). TMP is used clinically …

Mechanistic Plug-And-Play Models For Understanding The Impact Of Control And Climate On Seasonal Dengue Dynamics In Iquitos, Peru, Nathan Levick

Mathematics & Statistics ETDs

Dengue virus is a mosquito-borne multi-serotype disease whose dynamics are not precisely understood despite half of the world’s human population being at risk of infection. A recent dataset of dengue case reports from an isolated Amazonian city— Iquitos, Peru—provides a unique opportunity to assess dengue dynamics in a simpli- fied setting. Ten years of clinical surveillance data reveal a specific pattern: two novel serotypes, in turn, invaded and exclusively dominated incidence over several seasonal cycles, despite limited intra-annual variation in climate conditions. Together with mechanistic mathematical models, these data can provide an improved understand- ing of the nonlinear interactions between …

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Transgender Health Resource Bundle, Lovejeet Kaur Dec 2016

The Development, Implementation, And Evaluation Of A Transgender Health Resource Bundle, Lovejeet Kaur

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Transgender populations experience disproportionate social and health disparities that can negatively impact quality of life. Healthcare barriers due to gender based discrimination and lack of medical insurance and culturally competent providers contribute to low levels of access to preventative health care screenings, resulting in sub-optimal health outcomes. The unique health circumstances of transgender individuals have been understudied in the literature. As a result clinicians are often under-informed of their specific health maintenance needs and screening guidelines. To help address this disparity, a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student at the University of San Francisco facilitated the collaborative assessment, development, implementation …
