Emerging Climate-Driven Disturbance Processes: Widespread Mortality Associated With Snow-To-Rain Transitions Across 10° Of Latitude And Half The Range Of A Climate-Threatened Conifer, Buma, Paul E. Hennon, Constance A. Harrington, Jamie R. Popkin, John Krapek, Melinda S. Lamb, Lauren E. Oakes, Sari Saunders, Stefan Zeglen

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Climate change is causing rapid changes to forest disturbance regimes worldwide. While the consequences of climate change for existing disturbance processes, like fires, are relatively well studied, emerging drivers of disturbance such as snow loss and subsequent mortality are much less documented. As the climate warms, a transition from winter snow to rain in high latitudes will cause significant changes in environmental conditions such as soil temperatures, historically buffered by snow cover. The Pacific coast of North America is an excellent test case, as mean winter temperatures are currently at the snow–rain threshold and have been warming for approximately 100 …

Promoting Cd8+ Memory For Cancer Immunotherapy Using Aptamer-Targeted Sirna Therapeutics, Anugraha Rajagopalan

Open Access Dissertations

Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide. According to the National Cancer Institute, in 2012, there were 8.2 million cancer-related deaths worldwide, 14 million new cases and the number of new cancer cases is expected to rise to 22 million within the next two decades. Currently, Standard therapies for most cancers include surgical removal, radiotherapy using ionizing radiation or chemotherapy using drugs such as doxorubicin etc. Although these therapies help control the disease severity, they lack specificity and elicit significant side effects through their targeting of normal tissues. These off-target effects range from blood disorders, hair loss, diarrhea …

Family Functioning, Parenting Strategies, And Disordered Eating Among Hispanic Youth, Dina Ferranti Oct 2016

Family Functioning, Parenting Strategies, And Disordered Eating Among Hispanic Youth, Dina Ferranti

Open Access Dissertations

Disordered eating (DE) is a major public health concern related to both clinical eating disorders and obesity. DE encompasses various subclinical, yet maladaptive eating behaviors that include dieting, binge eating, and/or extreme weight control behaviors (i.e. self-induced vomiting, laxatives). Hispanic youth appear to be especially vulnerable to DE in comparison to other ethnic groups. However, to date there has been little research focused on Hispanic youth and DE, particularly those in middle childhood (8-11 years). The purpose of this study was to test a theoretical model examining family level variables, parenting strategies for eating and physical activity (PEAS) and family …

Exploring The Presence Of Microplastics In Salt Creek, Troy J. Janesheski, Tiffany M. Tyler

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Rising concerns of microplastics, defined as synthetic polymeric materials less than 5 mm in diameter, have emerged over the past several years, due to the many potential and known negative implications on the ecosystem. While a great deal of research has taken place in marine ecosystems, very little work has been done in watersheds. Therefore, studies were carried out in the Salt Creek (IN), Lake Michigan watershed in effort to determine the type and extent of synthetic polymers present. Sediment and water samples have been collected, screened, and processed mostly by wet peroxide oxidation (WPO) to isolate microplastics from natural …

The Influence Of Ph Variation On Cooa Activity, Brian R. Weaver, Rachael Devries, Amy Gunter, Robert W. Clark Oct 2016

The Influence Of Ph Variation On Cooa Activity, Brian R. Weaver, Rachael Devries, Amy Gunter, Robert W. Clark

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

CooA, a CO-sensing heme protein, acts as a transcriptional activator of CO-metabolizing proteins in bacteria such as Rhodospirillum rubrum and Carboxydothermus hydrogenoformans through sequence-specific DNA binding. Previous research indicated a reduced iron center and CO gas were necessary for CooA to achieve its active conformation and bind DNA. To determine if other reaction conditions facilitate CooA activation, the role of pH on CooA function was tested. Specifically, a fluorescence anisotropy assay was employed to measure possible Fe(III) CooA DNA binding from pH 3 - 12. Interestingly, CooA was observed to bind DNA without CO at acidic conditions, with optimal binding …

Using E.Coli To Incorporate Fluorescent Unnatural Amino Acids Into Proteins, Alyson Kneusel, Laura Rowe, Thomas Goyne, Megan Cullinan, Claire C. Mammoser, Amy Gunter, Bayland Brown

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

The goal of this work is to identify unnatural amino acids (UAAs) that can be incorporated into proteins by E. coli using four orthogonal aminoacyl tRNA synthetase/suppressor tRNA (aaRS/tRNA) pairs. A fluorescence screening assay was used to test the incorporation of thirteen UAAs into proteins using four aaRS/tRNA pairs that had been previously shown the possess varying degrees of promiscuity. The screen utilized a mutant green fluorescent protein (GFP) that included the amber stop codon within the open reading frame. Multiple results demonstrated that aaRS/tRNA pairs are able to bind other UAAs to a level greater than the UAA designed …

Fungal Bioremediation Of Human Solid Waste, Michael K. Watters, Alex Mehreteab, Victor Manzanilla, John Stewart, Mark Johnson Oct 2016

Fungal Bioremediation Of Human Solid Waste, Michael K. Watters, Alex Mehreteab, Victor Manzanilla, John Stewart, Mark Johnson

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

The accumulation of solid human waste is a major problem for long-term space expeditions. Fungal bioremediation of human waste is a powerful solution to this problem. We report here the comparison of a variety of wild-type filamentous fungi for their ability to rapidly degrade solid waste. Certain strains of wild-type filamentous fungi, such a Neurospora crassa and Gelanispora cerealis, yielded waste to fungal-mass conversion rates of over 60 percent in seven days. Several strains, including Neurospora crassa, are edible and average about 50 percent amino acid content by mass, potentially providing a high-protein food generated in-flight to explorers of the …

Use Of A Uav For Water Sampling To Assist Remote Sensing Of Bacterial Flora In Freshwater Environments, Dylan Cornell, Maryann Herman, Fernando Ontiveros

Undergraduate External Publications

Ground truth data collection in bodies of water traditionally relies on the use of watercraft and manual sampling. The transport and cost associated with the use of this type of equipment, as well as the time required to reach the site of collection, may all be significantly reduced by the use of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones. In this project we evaluate the implementation of a modified UAV with the ability to collect a small volume of surface water up to 400m offshore. The bacterial flora found in the water of several locations in the Lake Ontario-Rochester Embayment …

Screening For Genes Important To Cold Acclimatization In Neurospora Crassa., Michael K. Watters, Holly Howell, Victor Manzanilla Oct 2016

Screening For Genes Important To Cold Acclimatization In Neurospora Crassa., Michael K. Watters, Holly Howell, Victor Manzanilla

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

The environmental conditions that life must contend with can vary widely. Organisms have evolved a wide range of mechanisms for contending with these changing conditions. For relatively simple, sessile organisms (such as fungi), they must adapt themselves to the extremes of the environment. When subjected to rapid drops of temperature (cold shock), Neurospora responds with a dramatic, but temporary shift in its branching pattern. The fungal response, seems to parallel the physiological response to similar cold shock which has been observed in E. coli in which a set of genes is activated transiently in order to adjust the cell for …

Decomposition Of Antibiotics In Water Systems And The Impact On Microbial Communities, Abby Beavan, Ashita Bhatnagar Oct 2016

Decomposition Of Antibiotics In Water Systems And The Impact On Microbial Communities, Abby Beavan, Ashita Bhatnagar

Fall Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

Penicillin is one of the most prescribed antibiotics for humans and animals. As a result, unmetabolized penicillin is discharged into water systems, and bacteria in those water systems can become resistant. To better understand the lifetime of penicillin in water systems, the decomposition of Penicillin G (Pen G) in water solutions was studied. Simultaneously, the behavior of Staphylococcus aureus in these same solutions was analyzed. Four different aqueous solutions of 50 uM Pen G were studied: 1) water, 2)10 ppm Dissolved Organic Material (DOM), 3) 5mM NaHCO3, and 4) both DOM and NaHCO3. These solutions were analyzed weekly for 13 …

Review: Interspecies Ethics By Cynthia Willett, Thomas E. Randall Oct 2016

Review: Interspecies Ethics By Cynthia Willett, Thomas E. Randall

Between the Species

This paper provides a review of Cynthia Willett's book Interspecies Ethics. Willett aims to outline the beginnings of biosocial eros ethics – an ethical outline that sketches the potentiality of a cross-species cosmopolitan ideal of compassion (agape), derived through acknowledging and emphasizing the existence of spontaneous, playful interaction between social animals. Though this book is recommended for offering an innovative framework from which to explore the possibility of non-anthropocentric cross-species ethic, readers should be wary of expecting to find a fully-fledged moral program detailing how this would work.
